We present a formula which relates the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of a matroid $M$, as defined by Elias, Proudfoot and Wakefield, to the Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials of the matroid obtained by deleting an element, and various contractions and localizations of $M$. We give a number of applications of our formula to Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials of graphic matroids, including a simple formula for the Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomial of a parallel connection graph.

We propose a combinatorial interpretation of the coefficient of $q$ in Kazhdan- Lusztig polynomials and we prove it for finite simply-laced Weyl groups.
Diagrammatics for Kazhdan-Lusztig R-polynomials
Let $(W,S)$ be an arbitrary Coxeter system. We introduce a family of polynomials, $\{ \tilde{\mathcal{R}}_{u,\underline{v}}(t)\}$, indexed by pairs $(u,\underline{v})$ formed by an element $u\in W$ and a (non-necessarily reduced) word $\underline{v}$ in the alphabet $S$. The polynomial $\tilde{\mathcal{R}}_{u,\underline{v}}(t)$ is obtained by considering a certain subset of Libedinsky's light leaves associated to the pair $(u,\underline{v})$. Given a reduced expression $\underline{v}$ of an element $v\in W$; we show that $\tilde{\mathcal{R}}_{u,\underline{v}}(t)$ coincides with the Kazhdan-- Lusztig $\tilde{R}$-polynomial $\tilde{R}_{u,v}(t)$. Using the diagrammatic approach, we obtain some closed formulas for $\tilde{R}$- polynomials.

It is well known that many geometric properties of Schubert varieties of type $A$ can be interpreted combinatorially. Given two permutations $w,x\in S_n$ we give a combinatorial consequence of the property that the smooth locus of the Schubert variety $X_w$ contains the Schubert cell $Y_x$. This is a necessary ingredient for the interpretation of recent representation-theoretic results of the author with Mínguez in terms of identities of Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials.
Ballot tilings and increasing trees
We study enumerations of Dyck and ballot tilings, which are tilings of a region determined by two Dyck or ballot paths. We give bijective proofs to two formulae of enumerations of Dyck tilings through Hermite histories. We show that one of the formulae is equal to a certain Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomial. For a ballot tiling, we establish formulae which are analogues of formulae for Dyck tilings. Especially, the generating functions have factorized expressions. The key tool is a planted plane tree and its increasing labellings. We also introduce a generalized perfect matching which is bijective to an Hermite history for a ballot tiling. By combining these objects, we obtain various expressions of a generating function of ballot tilings with a fixed lower path.

Irreducibility results for parabolic induction of representations of the general linear group over a local non-archimedean field can be formulated in terms of Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials of type $A$. Spurred by these results and some computer calculations, we conjecture that certain alternating sums of Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials known as parabolic Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials satisfy properties analogous to those of the ordinary ones.

Special matchings are purely combinatorial objects associated with a partially ordered set, which have applications in Coxeter group theory. We provide an explicit characterization and a complete classification of all special matchings of any lower Bruhat interval. The results hold in any arbitrary Coxeter group and have also applications in the study of the corresponding parabolic Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials.
Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for the Hermitian symmetric pair $(B_N,A_{N-1})$
We provide combinatorial rules to compute Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials for the Hermitian symmetric pair $(B_N,A_{N-1})$ when the Hecke algebra has unequal parameters. They are obtained by filling regions delimited by paths with ballot strips. We also extend the binary tree algorithm introduced by Lascoux and Schützenberger to our case.
Leading Coefficients of Kazhdan--Lusztig Polynomials in Type $D$
Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials arise in the context of Hecke algebras associated to Coxeter groups. The computation of these polynomials is very difficult for examples of even moderate rank. In type $A$ it is known that the leading coefficient, $μ(x,w)$ of a Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomial $P_{x,w}$ is either 0 or 1 when $x$ is fully commutative and $w$ is arbitrary. In type $D$ Coxeter groups there are certain "bad" elements that make $μ$-value computation difficult.
The Robinson--Schensted correspondence between the symmetric group and pairs of standard Young tableaux gives rise to a way to compute cells of Coxeter groups of type $A$. A lesser known correspondence exists for signed permutations and pairs of so-called domino tableaux, which allows us to compute cells in Coxeter groups of types $B$ and $D$. I will use this correspondence in type $D$ to compute $μ$-values involving bad elements. I will conclude by showing that $μ(x,w)$ is 0 or 1 when $x$ is fully commutative in type $D$.

Cover-inclusive Dyck tilings are tilings of skew Young diagrams with ribbon tiles shaped like Dyck paths, in which tiles are no larger than the tiles they cover. These tilings arise in the study of certain statistical physics models and also Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials. We give two bijections between cover-inclusive Dyck tilings and linear extensions of tree posets. The first bijection maps the statistic (area + tiles)/2 to inversions of the linear extension, and the second bijection maps the "discrepancy" between the upper and lower boundary of the tiling to descents of the linear extension.

We provide simple rules for the computation of Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials in the maximal parabolic case. They are obtained by filling regions delimited by paths with "Dyck strips" obeying certain rules. We compare our results with those of Lascoux and Schützenberger.
A diagrammatic representation of an affine $C$ Temperley--Lieb algebra
In this thesis, I present an associative diagram algebra that is a faithful representation of a particular Temperley--Lieb algebra of type affine $C$, which has a basis indexed by the fully commutative elements of the Coxeter group of the same type. The Coxeter group of type affine $C$ contains an infinite number of fully commutative elements, and so the corresponding Temperley--Lieb algebra is of infinite rank. With the exception of type affine $A$, all other generalized Temperley--Lieb algebras with known diagrammatic representations are of finite rank. In the finite rank case, counting arguments are employed to prove faithfulness, but these techniques are not available in the affine $C$ case. To prove faithfulness, I classify the fully commutative elements in Coxeter groups of types $B$ and affine $C$ that are irreducible under weak star reductions. The classification of these irreducible elements provides the groundwork for inductive arguments that are used to prove faithfulness. The classification of the weak star irreducible elements of type $B$ also verifies C.K. Fan's unproved claim about about the set of fully commutative elements in a Coxeter group of type $B$ having no generator appearing in the left or right descent set that can be left or right cancelled, respectively. The results of this thesis will be used to construct a trace on the Hecke algebra of type affine $C$, which will then be used to compute leading coefficients of certain Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials in a non-recursive way.
Leading coefficients of the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for an Affine Weyl group of type $\widetilde{B_2}$
In this paper we compute the leading coefficients $μ(u,w)$ of the Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials $P_{u,w}$ for an affine Weyl group of type $\tilde{B}_2$. By using the \textbf{a}-function of a Coxeter group defined by Lusztig (see [L1, \S2]), we compute most $μ(u,w)$ explicitly. With part of these values $μ(u,w)$, we show that a conjecture of Lusztig on distinguished involutions is true for an affine Weyl group of type $\tilde{B}_2$. We also show that the conjectural formula in [L3, (12)] needs a modification.

We show that the leading coefficient of the Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomial $P_{x,w}(q)$ known as $μ(x,w)$ is always either 0 or 1 when $w$ is a Deodhar element of a finite Weyl group. The Deodhar elements have previously been characterized using pattern avoidance by Billey--Warrington (2001) and Billey--Jones (2007). In type $A$, these elements are precisely the 321-hexagon avoiding permutations. Using Deodhar's (1990) algorithm, we provide some combinatorial criteria to determine when $μ(x,w) = 1$ for such permutations $w$.

We provide a non-recursive description for the bounded admissible sets of masks used by Deodhar's algorithm to calculate the Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials $P_{x,w}(q)$ of type $A$, in the case when $w$ is hexagon avoiding and maximally clustered. This yields a combinatorial description of the Kazhdan--Lusztig basis elements of the Hecke algebra associated to such permutations $w$. The maximally-clustered hexagon-avoiding elements are characterized by avoiding the seven classical permutation patterns $\{3421, 4312, 4321, 46718235, 46781235, 56718234, 56781234\}$. We also briefly discuss the application of heaps to permutation pattern characterization.

We develop some applications of certain algebraic and combinatorial conditions on the elements of Coxeter groups, such as elementary proofs of the positivity of certain structure constants for the associated Kazhdan--Lusztig basis. We also explore some consequences of the existence of a Jones-type trace on the Hecke algebra of a Coxeter group, such as simple procedures for computing leading terms of certain Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials.
