Inverting the Kasteleyn matrix for holey hexagons
Consider a semi-regular hexagon on the triangular lattice (that is, the lattice consisting of unit equilateral triangles, drawn so that one family of lines is vertical). Rhombus (or lozenge) tilings of this region may be represented in at least two very different ways: as families of non-intersecting lattice paths; or alternatively as perfect matchings of a certain sub-graph of the hexagonal lattice. In this article we show how the lattice path representation of tilings may be utilised in order to calculate the entries of the inverse Kasteleyn matrix that arises from interpreting tilings as perfect matchings. Our main result gives precisely the inverse Kasteleyn matrix (up to a possible change in sign) for a semi-regular hexagon of side lengths $a,b,c,a,b,c$ (going clockwise from the south-west side). Not only does this theorem generalise a number of known results regarding tilings of hexagons that contain punctures, but it also provides a new formulation through which we may attack problems in statistical physics such as Ciucu's electrostatic conjecture.

In this paper we investigate the number of integer points lying in dilations of lattice path matroid polytopes. We give a characterization of such points as polygonal paths in the diagram of the lattice path matroid. Furthermore, we prove that lattice path matroid polytopes are affinely equivalent to a family of distributive polytopes. As applications we obtain two new infinite families of matroids verifying a conjecture of De Loera et.~al. and present an explicit formula of the Ehrhart polynomial for one of them.

Let $λ$ be a partition with no more than $n$ parts. Let $β$ be a weakly increasing $n$-tuple with entries from $\{ 1, ... , n \}$. The flagged Schur function in the variables $x_1, ... , x_n$ that is indexed by $λ$ and $β$ has been defined to be the sum of the content weight monomials for the semistandard Young tableaux of shape $λ$ whose values are row-wise bounded by the entries of $β$. Gessel and Viennot gave a determinant expression for the flagged Schur function indexed by $λ$ and $β$; this could be done since the pair $(λ, β)$ satisfied their "nonpermutable" condition for the sequence of terminals of an $n$-tuple of lattice paths that they used to model the tableaux. We generalize flagged Schur functions by dropping the requirement that $β$ be weakly increasing. Then for each $λ$ we give a condition on the entries of $β$ for the pair $(λ, β)$ to be nonpermutable that is both necessary and sufficient. When the parts of $λ$ are not distinct there will be multiple row bound $n$-tuples $β$ that will produce the same set of tableaux. We accordingly group the bounding $β$ into equivalence classes and identify the most efficient $β$ in each class for the determinant computation. We recently showed that many other sets of objects that are indexed by $n$ and $λ$ are enumerated by the number of these efficient $n$-tuples. We called these counts "parabolic Catalan numbers". It is noted that the $GL(n)$ Demazure characters (key polynomials) indexed by 312-avoiding permutations can also be expressed with these determinants.
Facial structures of lattice path matroid polytopes
A lattice path matroid is a transversal matroid corresponding to a pair of lattice paths on the plane. A matroid base polytope is the polytope whose vertices are the incidence vectors of the bases of the given matroid. In this paper, we study facial structures of matroid base polytopes corresponding to lattice path matroids.
Lattice paths inside a table, I
A lattice path in $\mathbb{Z}^d$ is a sequence $ν_1,ν_2,\ldots,ν_k\in\mathbb{Z}^d$ such that the steps $ν_i-ν_{i-1}$ lie in a subset $\mathbf{S}$ of $\mathbb{Z}^d$ for all $i=2,\ldots,k$. Let $T_{m,n}$ be the $m\times n$ table in the first area of the $xy$-axis and put $\mathbf{S}=\{(1,1),(1,0),(1,-1)\}$. Accordingly, let $\mathcal{I}_m(n)$ denote the number of lattice paths starting from the first column and ending at the last column of $T$. We will study the numbers $\mathcal{I}_m(n)$ and give explicit formulas for special values of $m$ and $n$. As a result, we prove a conjecture of \textit{Alexander R. Povolotsky} involving $\mathcal{I}_n(n)$. Finally, we present some relationships between the number of lattice paths and Fibonacci and Pell-Lucas numbers, and pose an open problem.
Reductions of Binary Trees and Lattice Paths induced by the Register Function

The register function (or Horton-Strahler number) of a binary tree is a well-known combinatorial parameter. We study a reduction procedure for binary trees which offers a new interpretation for the register function as the maximal number of reductions that can be applied to a given tree. In particular, the precise asymptotic behavior of the number of certain substructures ("branches") that occur when reducing a tree repeatedly is determined.
In the same manner we introduce a reduction for simple two-dimensional lattice paths from which a complexity measure similar to the register function can be derived. We analyze this quantity, as well as the (cumulative) size of an (iteratively) reduced lattice path asymptotically.

In this paper, we exploit the combinatorics and geometry of triangulations of products of simplices to derive new results in the context of Catalan combinatorics of $ν$-Tamari lattices. In our framework, the main role of "Catalan objects" is played by $(I,\overline{J})$-trees: bipartite trees associated to a pair $(I,\overline{J})$ of finite index sets that stand in simple bijection with lattice paths weakly above a lattice path $ν=ν(I,\overline{J})$. Such trees label the maximal simplices of a triangulation whose dual polyhedral complex gives a geometric realization of the $ν$-Tamari lattice introduced by Prévile-Ratelle and Viennot. In particular, we obtain geometric realizations of $m$-Tamari lattices as polyhedral subdivisions of associahedra induced by an arrangement of tropical hyperplanes, giving a positive answer to an open question of F.~Bergeron.
The simplicial complex underlying our triangulation endows the $ν$-Tamari lattice with a full simplicial complex structure. It is a natural generalization of the classical simplicial associahedron, alternative to the rational associahedron of Armstrong, Rhoades and Williams, whose $h$-vector entries are given by a suitable generalization of the Narayana numbers.
Our methods are amenable to cyclic symmetry, which we use to present type $B$ analogues of our constructions. Notably, we define a partial order that generalizes the type $B$ Tamari lattice, introduced independently by Thomas and Reading, along with corresponding geometric realizations.
The number of parking functions with center of a given length

Let $1\leq r\leq n$ and suppose that, when the Depth-first Search Algorithm is applied to a given rooted labelled tree on $n+1$ vertices, exactly $r$ vertices are visited before backtracking. Let $R$ be the set of trees with this property. We count the number of elements of $R$.
For this purpose, we first consider a bijection, due to Parkinson, Yang and Yu, that maps $R$ onto the set of parking function with center (defined by the authors in a previous article) of size $r$. A second bijection maps this set onto the set of parking functions with run $r$, a property that we introduce here. We then prove that the number of length $n$ parking functions with a given run is the number of length $n$ rook words (defined by Leven, Rhoades and Wilson) with the same run. This is done by counting related lattice paths in a ladder-shaped region. We finally count the number of length $n$ rook words with run $r$, which is the answer to our initial question.

We present an average case analysis of a variant of dual-pivot quicksort. We show that the used algorithmic partitioning strategy is optimal, i.e., it minimizes the expected number of key comparisons. For the analysis, we calculate the expected number of comparisons exactly as well as asymptotically, in particular, we provide exact expressions for the linear, logarithmic, and constant terms.
An essential step is the analysis of zeros of lattice paths in a certain probability model. Along the way a combinatorial identity is proven.

Motivated by the relation holding for the m-generalized Catalan numbers of type A and C, the connection between dominant regions of the m-Shi arrangement of type A and C is investigated. In the same line of thought, a bijection between mn+1 copies of each m-Dyck path of height n and the set of NE lattice paths inside an n times mn rectangle is provided.

We present a general theorem on the structure of bivariate generating functions which gives sufficient conditions such that the limiting probability distribution is a half-normal distribution. If $X$ is a normally distributed random variable with zero mean, then $|X|$ obeys a half-normal distribution. In the second part, we apply our result to prove three natural appearances in the domain of lattice paths: the number of returns to zero, the height, and the sign changes are under zero drift distributed according to a half-normal distribution. This extends known results to a general step set. Finally, our result also gives a new proof of Banach's matchbox problem.
Matrices about the lattice paths
From the matrix point of view, we use the recursion to discuss four combinatorial numbers in terms of the integer lattice paths, this is different from Andrá's method (Andra). We give four tables and matrices, and their relations, and give their matrix decompositions. By their relations, we give the explicit formulas of the special combinatorial numbers.

This article deals with the enumeration of directed lattice walks on the integers with any finite set of steps, starting at a given altitude $j$ and ending at a given altitude $k$, with additional constraints such as, for example, to never attain altitude $0$ in-between. We first discuss the case of walks on the integers with steps $-h, \dots, -1, +1, \dots, +h$. The case $h=1$ is equivalent to the classical Dyck paths, for which many ways of getting explicit formulas involving Catalan-like numbers are known. The case $h=2$ corresponds to "basketball" walks, which we treat in full detail. Then we move on to the more general case of walks with any finite set of steps, also allowing some weights/probabilities associated with each step. We show how a method of wide applicability, the so-called "kernel method", leads to explicit formulas for the number of walks of length $n$, for any $h$, in terms of nested sums of binomials. We finally relate some special cases to other combinatorial problems, or to problems arising in queuing theory.

Let $Φ$ be an irreducible crystallographic root system with Weyl group $W$, coroot lattice $\check{Q}$ and Coxeter number $h$. Recently the second named author defined a uniform $W$-isomorphism $ζ$ between the finite torus $\check{Q}/(mh+1)\check{Q}$ and the set of non-nesting parking fuctions $\operatorname{Park}^{(m)}(Φ)$. If $Φ$ is of type $A_{n-1}$ and $m=1$ this map is equivalent to a map defined on labelled Dyck paths that arises in the study of the Hilbert series of the space of diagonal harmonics.
In this paper we investigate the case $m=1$ for the other infinite families of root systems ($B_n$, $C_n$ and $D_n$). In each type we define models for the finite torus and for the set of non-nesting parking functions in terms of labelled lattice paths. The map $ζ$ can then be viewed as a map between these combinatorial objects. Our work entails new bijections between (square) lattice paths and ballot paths.

A bargraph is a self-avoiding lattice path with steps $U=(0,1)$, $H=(1,0)$ and $D=(0,-1)$ that starts at the origin and ends on the $x$-axis, and stays strictly above the $x$-axis everywhere except at the endpoints. Bargraphs have been studied as a special class of convex polyominoes, and enumerated using the so-called wasp-waist decomposition of Bousquet-Mélou and Rechnitzer. In this paper we note that there is a trivial bijection between bargraphs and Motzkin paths without peaks or valleys. This allows us to use the recursive structure of Motzkin paths to enumerate bargraphs with respect to several statistics, finding simpler derivations of known results and obtaining many new ones. We also count symmetric bargraphs and alternating bargraphs. In some cases we construct statistic-preserving bijections between different combinatorial objects, proving some identities that we encounter along the way.
Set-Valued Tableaux & Generalized Catalan Numbers
Standard set-valued Young tableaux are a generalization of standard Young tableaux in which cells may contain more than one integer, with the added conditions that every integer at position $(i,j)$ must be smaller than every integer at positions $(i,j+1)$ and $(i+1,j)$. This paper explores the combinatorics of standard set-valued Young tableaux with two-rows, and how those tableaux may be used to provide new combinatorial interpretations of generalized Catalan numbers. New combinatorial interpretations are provided for the two-parameter Fuss-Catalan numbers (Raney numbers), the rational Catalan numbers, and the solution to the so-called "generalized tennis ball problem". Methodologies are then introduced for the enumeration of standard set-valued Young tableaux, prompting explicit formulas for the general two-row case. The paper closes by drawing a bijection between arbitrary classes of two-row standard set-valued Young tableaux and collections of two-dimensional lattice paths that lie weakly below a unique maximal path.
Factorial characters of some classical Lie groups
A definition is offered of the factorial characters of the general linear group, the symplectic group and the orthogonal group in an odd dimensional space. It is shown that these characters satisfy certain flagged Jacobi-Trudi identities. These identities are then used to give combinatorial expressions for the factorial characters: first in terms of a lattice path model and then in terms of the well known tableaux associated with the classical groups. Factorial Q-functions are then defined in terms of three sets of primed shifted tableaux, and shown to satisfy Tokuyama type identities in each case.
The kernel method for lattice paths below a line of rational slope

We analyse some enumerative and asymptotic properties of lattice paths below a line of rational slope. We illustrate our approach with Dyck paths under a line of slope $2/5$. This answers Knuth's problem #4 from his "Flajolet lecture" during the conference "Analysis of Algorithms" (AofA'2014) in Paris in June 2014. Our approach extends the work of Banderier and Flajolet for asymptotics and enumeration of directed lattice paths to the case of generating functions involving several dominant singularities, and has applications to a full class of problems involving some "periodicities". A key ingredient in the proof is the generalization of an old trick by Knuth himself (for enumerating permutations sortable by a stack), promoted by Flajolet and others as the "kernel method". All the corresponding generating functions are algebraic, and they offer some new combinatorial identities, which can also be tackled in the A=B spirit of Wilf-Zeilberger-Petkovsek. We show how to obtain similar results for any rational slope. An interesting case is e.g. Dyck paths below the slope $2/3$ (this corresponds to the so-called Duchon's club model), for which we solve a conjecture related to the asymptotics of the area below such lattice paths. Our work also gives access to lattice paths below an irrational slope (e.g. Dyck paths below $y=x/\sqrt{2}$), a problem that we study in a companion article.

Some reflections on directed lattice paths
This article analyzes directed lattice paths, when a boundary reflecting or absorbing condition is added to the classical models. The lattice paths are characterized by two time-independent sets of rules (also called steps) which have a privileged direction of increase and are therefore essentially one-dimensional objects. Depending on the spatial coordinate, one of the two sets of rules applies, namely one for altitude 0 and one for altitude bigger than 0. The abscissa y=0 thus acts as a border which either absorbs or reflects steps. The absorption model corresponds to the model analyzed by Banderier and Flajolet ("Analytic combinatorics of directed lattice paths"), while the reflecting model leads to a more complicated situation. We show how the generating functions are then modified: the kernel method strikes again but here it unfortunately does not give a nice product formula. This makes the analysis more challenging, and, in the case of Łukasiewicz walks, we give the asymptotics for the number of excursions, arches and meanders. Limit laws for the number of returns to 0 of excursions are given. We also compute the limit laws of the final altitude of meanders. The full analytic situation is more complicated than the Banderier-Flajolet model (partly because new "critical compositions" appear, forcing us to introduce new key quantities, like the drift at 0), and we quantify to what extent the global drift, and the drift at 0 play a role in the "universal" behavior of such walks.
