Well-quasi-ordering in lattice path matroids
Lattice path matroids form a subclass of transversal matroids and were introduced by Bonin, de Mier and Noy. Transversal matroids are not well-quasi-ordered, even when the branch-width is restricted. Though lattice path matroids are not well-quasi-ordered, we prove that lattice path matroids of bounded branch-width are well-quasi-ordered.

Hankel determinants and shifted periodic continued fractions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Sulanke and Xin developed a continued fraction method that applies to evaluate Hankel determinants corresponding to quadratic generating functions. We use their method to give short proofs of Cigler's Hankel determinant conjectures, which were proved recently by Chang-Hu-Zhang using direct determinant computation. We find that shifted periodic continued fractions arise in our computation. We also discover and prove some new nice Hankel determinants relating to lattice paths with step set $\{(1,1),(q,0), (\ell-1,-1)\}$ for integer parameters $m,q,\ell$. Again shifted periodic continued fractions appear.

A bijection between permutation matrices and descending plane partitions without special parts, which respects the quadruplet of statistics considered by Behrend, Di Francesco and Zinn--Justin
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a bijection between permutation matrices and descending plane partitions without special parts, which respects the quadruple of statistics considered by Behrend, Di Francesco and Zinn--Justin. This bijection involves the inversion words of permutations and the "usual" representation of descending plane partitions as families of non--intersec\-ting lattice paths.

Local time for lattice paths and the associated limit laws
For generalized Dyck paths (i.e., directed lattice paths with any finite set of jumps), we analyse their local time at zero (i.e., the number of times the path is touching or crossing the abscissa). As we are in a discrete setting, the event we analyse here is '' invisible '' to the tools of Brownian motion theory. It is interesting that the key tool for analysing directed lattice paths, which is the kernel method, is not directly applicable here. Therefore, we introduce a variant of this kernel method to get the trivariate generating function (length, final altitude, local time): this leads to an expression involving symmetric and algebraic functions. We apply this analysis to different types of constrained lattice paths (meanders , excursions, bridges,. . .). Then, we illustrate this approach on 'basketball walks ' which are walks defined by the jumps --2, --1, 0, +1, +2. We use singularity analysis to prove that the limit laws for the local time are (depending on the drift and the type of walk) the geometric distribution, the negative binomial distribution, the Rayleigh distribution, or the half-normal distribution (a universal distribution up to now rarely encountered in analytic combinatorics).
On factor-free Dyck words with half-integer slope
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics 99 (2018), 94-108 • View PublicationBIB
We study a class of rational Dyck paths with slope (2m+1)/2 corresponding to factor-free Dyck words, as introduced by P. Duchon. We show that, for the slopes considered in this paper, the language of factor-free Dyck words is generated by an auxiliary language that we examine from the algebraic and combinatorial points of view. We provide a lattice path description of this language, and give an explicit enumeration formula in terms of partial Bell polynomials. As a corollary, we obtain new formulas for the number of associated factor-free generalized Dyck words.

Several Topics in Experimental Mathematics
This thesis deals with applications of experimental mathematics to a number of problems. The first problem is related to random graph statistics. We consider a certain class of Galton-Watson random trees and look at the total height statistic. We provide an automated procedure for computing values of the moments of this statistic. Next, we investigate several problems related to lattice paths staying below a line of rational slope. These results are largely data-based. Using the generated data, we are able to find recurrences for the number of such paths for the cases of slopes 3/2 and 5/2. There is also investigation of a generalization of these problems to three dimensions. We also examine generalizations of Sister Celine's method and Gosper's algorithm for evaluating summations. For both, we greatly extend the classes of applicable functions and applications to proving, or reproving in an automated way, interesting combinatorial problems. For the generalization of Sister Celine's method, we allow summations of arbitrary products of hypergeometric terms and linear recurrent sequences with rational coefficients. We also show a partial result related to the bunk bed conjecture, a problem concerning random finite graphs. Let $G$ be a finite graph. Remove edges from $G\square K_2$ independently and with the same probability. In $G\square K_2$, there is an edge placed between all vertices of $G$ and the corresponding vertex in a copy of $G$. Then, label these vertices as either $(v,0)$ or $(v,1)$ for each $v\in V(G)$. The conjecture says that for any $x,y \in V(G)$, it is least as likely to have $(x,0)$ connected to $(y,0)$ as to have $(x,0)$ connected to $(y,1)$. We prove the conjecture in the case that only two of the edges going between the two copes of $G$ are retained.

Identities from representation theory
Published in Discrete Math., 342(9) (2019), pp. 2493-2541 • View PublicationBIB
We give a new Jacobi--Trudi-type formula for characters of finite-dimensional irreducible representations in type $C_n$ using characters of the fundamental representations and non-intersecting lattice paths. We give equivalent determinant formulas for the decomposition multiplicities for tensor powers of the spin representation in type $B_n$ and the exterior representation in type $C_n$. This gives a combinatorial proof of an identity of Katz and equates such a multiplicity with the dimension of an irreducible representation in type $C_n$. By taking certain specializations, we obtain identities for $q$-Catalan triangle numbers, the $q,t$-Catalan number of Stump, $q$-triangle versions of Motzkin and Riordan numbers, and generalizations of Touchard's identity. We use (spin) rigid tableaux and crystal base theory to show some formulas relating Catalan, Motzkin, and Riordan triangle numbers.

Counting tropical rational curves with cross-ratio constraints
Published • View PublicationBIB
We enumerate rational curves in toric surfaces passing through points and satisfying cross-ratio constraints using tropical and combinatorial methods. Our starting point is arXiv:1509.07453, where a tropical-algebraic correspondence theorem was proved that relates counts of rational curves in toric varieties that satisfy point conditions and cross-ratio constraints to the analogous tropical counts. We proceed in two steps: based on tropical intersection theory we first study tropical cross-ratios and introduce degenerated cross-ratios. Second we provide a lattice path algorithm that produces all tropical curves satisfying such degenerated conditions explicitly. In a special case simpler combinatorial objects, so-called cross-ratio floor diagrams, are introduced which can be used to determine these enumerative numbers as well.

Vertically constrained Motzkin-like paths inspired by bobbin lace
Published • View PublicationBIB
Inspired by a new mathematical model for bobbin lace, this paper considers finite lattice paths formed from the set of step vectors $\mathfrak{A}=$$\{\rightarrow,$ $\nearrow,$ $\searrow,$ $\uparrow,$ $\downarrow\}$ with the restriction that vertical steps $(\uparrow, \downarrow)$ cannot be consecutive. The set $\mathfrak{A}$ is the union of the well known Motzkin step vectors $\mathfrak{M}=$$\{\rightarrow,$ $\nearrow,$ $\searrow\}$ with the vertical steps $\{\uparrow, \downarrow\}$. An explicit bijection $φ$ between the exhaustive set of vertically constrained paths formed from $\mathfrak{A}$ and a bisection of the paths generated by $\mathfrak{M}$ is presented. In a similar manner, paths with the step vectors $\mathfrak{B}=$$\{\nearrow,$ $\searrow,$ $\uparrow,$ $\downarrow\}$, the union of Dyck step vectors and constrained vertical steps, are examined. We show, using the same $φ$ mapping, that there is a bijection between vertically constrained $\mathfrak{B}$ paths and the subset of Motzkin paths avoiding horizontal steps at even indices. Generating functions are derived to enumerate these vertically constrained, partially directed paths when restricted to the half and quarter-plane. Finally, we extend Schröder and Delannoy step sets in a similar manner and find a bijection between these paths and a subset of Schröder paths that are smooth (do not change direction) at a regular horizontal interval.

Constant term formulas for refined enumerations of Gog and Magog trapezoids
Published • View PublicationBIB
Gog and Magog trapezoids are certain arrays of positive integers that generalize alternating sign matrices (ASMs) and totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions (TSSCPPs) respectively. Zeilberger used constant term formulas to prove that there is the same number of (n,k)-Gog trapezoids as there is of (n,k)-Magog trapezoids, thereby providing so far the only proof for a weak version of a conjecture by Mills, Robbins and Rumsey from 1986. About 20 years ago, Krattenthaler generalized Gog and Magog trapezoids and formulated an extension of their conjecture, and, recently, Biane and Cheballah generalized Gog trapezoids further and formulated a related conjecture. In this paper, we derive constant term formulas for various refined enumerations of generalized Gog trapezoids including those considered by Krattenthaler and by Biane and Cheballah. For this purpose we employ a result on the enumeration of truncated monotone triangles which is in turn based in the author's operator formula for the number of monotone triangles with prescribed bottom row. As a byproduct, we also generalize the operator formula for monotone triangles by including the inversion number and the complementary inversion number for ASMs. Constant term formulas as well as determinant formulas for the refined Magog trapezoid numbers that appear in Krattenthaler's conjecture are also deduced by using the classical approach based on non-intersecting lattice paths and the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot theorem. Finally, we review and partly extend a few existing tools that may be helpful in relating constant term formulas for Gogs to those for Magogs to eventually prove the above mentioned conjectures.
Brick-wall lattice paths and applications
We introduce a new type of lattice path, called brick-wall lattice path, and we derive a formula which counts the number of paths on these lattices imposing certain restrictions on the Cartesian plane. Connections to the Fibonacci sequence, as well as to other sequences of numbers, are given. Finally, we use these brick-wall lattice paths to determine the first two non-zero coefficients of the reliability polynomials associated with particular two-terminal networks known as hammocks.

Counting with Borel's Triangle
Published • View PublicationBIB
Borel's triangle is an array of integers closely related to the classical Catalan numbers. In this paper we study combinatorial statistics counted by Borel's triangle. We present various combinatorial interpretations of Borel's triangle in terms of lattice paths, binary trees, and pattern avoiding permutations and matchings, and derive a functional equation that is useful in analyzing the involved structures.

Arctic curves for paths with arbitrary starting points: a tangent method approach
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 51 355201 (2018) • View PublicationBIB
We use the tangent method to investigate the arctic curve in a model of non-intersecting lattice paths with arbitrary fixed starting points aligned along some boundary and whose distribution is characterized by some arbitrary piecewise differentiable function. We find that the arctic curve has a simple explicit parametric representation depending of this function, providing us with a simple transform that maps the arbitrary boundary condition to the arctic curve location. We discuss generic starting point distributions as well as particular freezing ones which create additional frozen domains adjacent to the boundary, hence new portions for the arctic curve. A number of examples are presented, corresponding to both generic and freezing distributions.

Correlation Functions as Nests of Self-Avoiding Paths
Published in J. Math. Sci., Vol. 238, No. 6 (2019), 779-792 • View PublicationBIB
We discuss connection between the XXZ Heisenberg spin chain in the limiting case of zero anisotropy and some aspects of enumerative combinatorics. The representation of the Bethe wave functions via the Schur functions allows to apply the theory of symmetric functions to calculation of the correlation functions. We provide a combinatorial derivation of the dynamical correlation functions of the projection operator in terms of nests of self-avoiding lattice paths.

Donaldson-Thomas invariants, torus knots, and lattice paths
Published in Phys. Rev. D 98, 026022 (2018) • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we find and explore the correspondence between quivers, torus knots, and combinatorics of counting paths. Our first result pertains to quiver representation theory -- we find explicit formulae for classical generating functions and Donaldson-Thomas invariants of an arbitrary symmetric quiver. We then focus on quivers corresponding to $(r,s)$ torus knots and show that their classical generating functions, in the extremal limit and framing $rs$, are generating functions of lattice paths under the line of the slope $r/s$. Generating functions of such paths satisfy extremal A-polynomial equations, which immediately follows after representing them in terms of the Duchon grammar. Moreover, these extremal A-polynomial equations encode Donaldson-Thomas invariants, which provides an interesting example of algebraicity of generating functions of these invariants. We also find a quantum generalization of these statements, i.e. a relation between motivic quiver generating functions, quantum extremal knot invariants, and $q$-weighted path counting. Finally, in the case of the unknot, we generalize this correspondence to the full HOMFLY-PT invariants and counting of Schröder paths.

On a transformation of Riordan moment sequences
We define a transformation that associates certain exponential moment sequences with ordinary moment sequences in a natural way. The ingredients of this transformation are series reversion, the Sumudu transform (a variant of the Laplace transform), and the inverting of generating functions. This transformation also has a simple interpretation in terms of continued fractions. It associates lattice path objects with permutation objects, and in particular it associates the Narayana triangle with the Eulerian triangle.

Counting Borel Orbits in Symmetric Varieties of Types $BI$ and $CII$

This is a continuation of our combinatorial program on the enumeration of Borel orbits in symmetric varieties of classical types. Here, we determine the generating series the numbers of Borel orbits in $\mathbf{SO}_{2n+1}/\mathbf{S(O}_{2p}\times \mathbf{O}_{2q+1}\mathbf{)}$ (type $BI$) and in $\mathbf{Sp}_n/\mathbf{Sp}_p\times \mathbf{Sp}_q$ (type $CII$). In addition, we explore relations to lattice path enumeration.

A partial order on Motzkin paths
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Tamari lattice, defined on Catalan objects such as binary trees and Dyck paths, is a well-studied poset in combinatorics. It is thus natural to try to extend it to other families of lattice paths. In this article, we fathom such a possibility by defining and studying an analogy of the Tamari lattice on Motzkin paths. While our generalization is not a lattice, each of its connected components is isomorphic to an interval in the classical Tamari lattice. With this structural result, we proceed to the enumeration of components and intervals in the poset of Motzkin paths we defined. We also extend the structural and enumerative results to Schröder paths. We conclude by a discussion on the relation between our work and that of Baril and Pallo (2014).

Paths to Understanding Birational Rowmotion on Products of Two Chains
Published • View PublicationBIB
Birational rowmotion is an action on the space of assignments of rational functions to the elements of a finite partially-ordered set (poset). It is lifted from the well-studied rowmotion map on order ideals (equivariantly on antichains) of a poset $P$, which when iterated on special posets, has unexpectedly nice properties in terms of periodicity, cyclic sieving, and homomesy (statistics whose averages over each orbit are constant) [AST11, BW74, CF95, Pan09, PR13, RuSh12,RuWa15+,SW12, ThWi17, Yil17. In this context, rowmotion appears to be related to Auslander-Reiten translation on certain quivers, and birational rowmotion to $Y$-systems of type $A_m \times A_n$ described in Zamolodchikov periodicity. We give a formula in terms of families of non-intersecting lattice paths for iterated actions of the birational rowmotion map on a product of two chains. This allows us to give a much simpler direct proof of the key fact that the period of this map on a product of chains of lengths $r$ and $s$ is $r+s+2$ (first proved by D.~Grinberg and the second author), as well as the first proof of the birational analogue of homomesy along files for such posets.
Ascents in Non-Negative Lattice Paths
Published in 29th International Conference on Probabilistic, Combinatorial and Asymptotic Methods for the Analysis of Algorithms (AofA 2018), Leibniz International Proceedings in Informatics (LIPIcs), vol 110 • View PublicationBIB
Non-negative Łukasiewicz paths are special two-dimensional lattice paths never passing below their starting altitude which have only one single special type of down step. They are well-known and -studied combinatorial objects, in particular due to their bijective relation to trees with given node degrees. We study the asymptotic behavior of the number of ascents (i.e., the number of maximal sequences of consecutive up steps) of given length for classical subfamilies of general non-negative Łukasiewicz paths: those with arbitrary ending altitude, those ending on their starting altitude, and a variation thereof. Our results include precise asymptotic expansions for the expected number of such ascents as well as for the corresponding variance.
