On the probability of Boolean functions of events in the n-dimensional Euclidean space
It is shown by the author in 2017 that for the union of N orthants in the n-dimensional space there exists an efficient and systematic way to find the exact value, using a suitable partial order relation construction. In this paper our events are hyperrectangles (or n-orthotopes), the Cartesian product of intervals: another important sets (or events) in both theory and practice. We have discovered a new efficient algorithm for the union of such events. With other important Boolean functions we present optimization problem formulations for both hyperreectangles and orthants.
Cambrian combinatorics on quiver representations (type A)
Published in Adv. in Appl. Math. 143 (2023), Paper No. 102428 • View PublicationBIB
This paper presents a geometric model of the Auslander-Reiten quiver of a type A quiver together with a stability function for which all indecomposable modules are stable. We also introduce a new Catalan object which we call a maximal almost rigid representation. We show that its endomorphism algebra is a tilted algebra of type A. We define a partial order on the set of maximal almost rigid representations and use our new geometric model to show that this partial order is a Cambrian lattice.
Extended Nestohedra and their Face Numbers
Nestohedra are a family of convex polytopes that includes permutohedra, associahedra, and graph associahedra. In this paper, we study an extension of such polytopes, called extended nestohedra. We show that these objects are indeed the boundaries of simple polytopes, answering a question of Lam and Pylyavskyy. We also study the duals of (extended) nestohedra, giving a complete characterization of isomorphisms (as simplicial complexes) between the duals of extended nestohedra and a partial characterization of isomorphisms between the duals of nestohedra and extended nestohedra. In addition, we give formulas for their $f$-, $h$-, and $γ$-vectors. This includes showing that the $f$-vectors of the extended nestohedron corresponding to a forest $F$ and the nestohedron corresponding to the line graph of $F$ are the same, as well as showing that all flag extended nestohedra have nonnegative $γ$-vectors, thus proving Gal's conjecture for a large class of flag simple polytopes. We also relate the $f$- and $h$-vectors of the nestohedra and extended nestohedra, as well as give explicit formulas for the $h$- and $γ$-vectors in terms of descent statistics for a certain class of flag extended nestohedra. Finally, we define a partial ordering on partial permutations that is a join semilattice quotient of the weak Bruhar order on the symmetric group, and such that any linear extension of the partial order provides a shelling of the dual of the stellohedron.

On piecewise-linear homeomorphisms between distributive and anti-blocking polyhedra
Published • View PublicationBIB
Stanley (1986) introduced the order polytope and chain polytope of a partially ordered set and showed that they are related by a piecewise-linear homeomorphism. In this paper we view order and chain polytopes as instances of distributive and anti-blocking polytopes, respectively. Both these classes of polytopes are defined in terms of the componentwise partial order on $\mathbb R^n$. We generalize Stanley's PL-homeomorphism to a large class of distributive polyhedra using infinite walks in marked networks.

On random stable matchings: cyclic matchings with strict preferences and two-side matchings with partially ordered preferences
Published • View PublicationBIB
Consider a cyclically ordered collection of $r$ equinumerous agent sets with strict preferences of every agent over the agents from the next agent set. A weakly stable cyclic matching is a partition of the set of agents into disjoint union of $r$-long cycles, one agent from each set per cycle, such that there are no destabilizing $r$-long cycles, i.e. cycles in which every agent strictly prefers its successor to its successor in the matching. Assuming that the preferences are uniformly random and independent, we show that the expected number of stable matchings grows with $n$ (cardinality of each agent set) as $(n\log n)^{r-1}$. We also consider a bipartite stable matching problem where preference list of each agent forms a partially ordered set. Each partial order is an intersection of several, $k_i$ for side $i$, independent, uniformly random, strict orders. For $k_1+k_2>2$, the expected number of stable matchings is analyzed for three, progressively stronger, notions of stability. The expected number of weakly stable matchings is shown to grow super-exponentially fast. In contrast, for $\min(k_1,k_2)>1$, the fraction of instances with at least one strongly stable (super-stable) matching is super-exponentially small.

Transitioning between tableaux and spider bases for Specht modules
Published • View PublicationBIB
Regarding the Specht modules associated to the two-row partition $(n,n)$, we provide a combinatorial path model to study the transitioning matrix from the tableau basis to the $A_1$-web basis (i.e. cup diagrams), and prove that the entries in this matrix are positive in the upper-triangular portion with respect to a certain partial order.

Fast Reliability Ranking of Matchstick Minimal Networks
Published in Networks 2021 • View PublicationBIB
In this article, we take a closer look at the reliability of large minimal networks constructed by repeated compositions of the simplest possible networks. For a given number of devices $n=2^m$ we define the set of all the possible compositions of series and parallel networks of two devices. We then define several partial orders over this set and study their properties. As far as we know the ranking problem has not been addressed before in this context, and this article establishes the first results in this direction. The usual approach when dealing with reliability of two-terminal networks is to determine existence or non-existence of uniformly most reliable networks. The problem of ranking two-terminal networks is thus more complex, but by restricting our study to the set of compositions we manage to determine and demonstrate the existence of a poset.
A poset metric from the directed maximum common edge subgraph
We study the directed maximum common edge subgraph problem (DMCES) for the class of directed graphs that are finite, weakly connected, oriented, and simple. We use DMCES to define a metric on partially ordered sets that can be represented as weakly connected directed acyclic graphs. While most existing metrics assume that the underlying sets of the partial order are identical, and only the relationships between elements can differ, the metric defined here allows the partially ordered sets to be different. The proof that there is a metric based on DMCES involves the extension of the concept of line digraphs. Although this extension can be used to compute the metric by a reduction to the maximum clique problem, it is computationally feasible only for sparse graphs. We provide an alternative techniques for computing the metric for directed graphs that have the additional property of being transitively closed.

Further Bijections to Pattern-Avoiding Valid Hook Configurations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Valid hook configurations are combinatorial objects used to understand West's stack-sorting map. We extend existing bijections corresponding valid hook configurations to intervals in partial orders on Motzkin paths. To enumerate valid hook configurations on $312$-avoiding permutations, we build off of an existing bijection into a Motzkin poset and construct a bijection to certain well-studied closed lattice walks in the first quadrant. We use existing results about these lattice paths to show that valid hook configurations on $312$-avoiding permutations are not counted by a $D$-finite generating function, resolving a question of Defant's, and additionally to compute asymptotics for the number of such configurations. We also extend a bijection of Defant's to a correspondence between valid hook configurations on $132$-avoiding permutations and intervals in the Motzkin-Tamari posets, providing a more elegant proof of Defant's enumeration thereof. To investigate this bijection, we present a number of lemmas about valid hook configurations that are generally applicable and further study the bijections of Defant's.

Correlation for permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this note we investigate correlation inequalities for `up-sets' of permutations, in the spirit of the Harris--Kleitman inequality. We focus on two well-studied partial orders on $S_n$, giving rise to differing notions of up-sets. Our first result shows that, under the strong Bruhat order on $S_n$, up-sets are positively correlated (in the Harris--Kleitman sense). Thus, for example, for a (uniformly) random permutation $π$, the event that no point is displaced by more than a fixed distance $d$ and the event that $π$ is the product of at most $k$ adjacent transpositions are positively correlated. In contrast, under the weak Bruhat order we show that this completely fails: surprisingly, there are two up-sets each of measure $1/2$ whose intersection has arbitrarily small measure. We also prove analogous correlation results for a class of non-uniform measures, which includes the Mallows measures. Some applications and open problems are discussed.

Coloring Hasse diagrams and disjointness graphs of curves
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a family of curves $\mathcal{C}$ in the plane, its disjointness graph is the graph whose vertices correspond to the elements of $\mathcal{C}$, and two vertices are joined by an edge if and only if the corresponding sets are disjoint. We prove that for every positive integer $r$ and $n$, there exists a family of $n$ curves whose disjointness graph has girth $r$ and chromatic number $Ω(\frac{1}{r}\log n)$. In the process we slightly improve Bollobás's old result on Hasse diagrams and show that our improved bound is best possible for uniquely generated partial orders.

Semigroup models for biochemical reaction networks
Published • View PublicationBIB
The catalytic reaction system (CRS) formalism by Hordijk and Steel is a versatile method to model autocatalytic biochemical reaction networks. It is particularly suited, and has been widely used, to study self-sustainment and self-generation properties. Its distinguishing feature is the explicit assignment of a catalytic function to chemicals that are part of the system. In this work, it is shown that the subsequent and simultaneous catalytic functions gives rise to an algebraic structure of a semigroup with the additional compatible operation of idempotent addition and a partial order. The aim of this article is to demonstrate that such semigroup models are a natural setup to describe and analyze self-sustaining CRS. The basic algebraic properties of the models are established and the notion of the function of any set of chemicals on the whole CRS is made precise. This leads to a natural discrete dynamics on the network, which results from iteratively considering the self-action on a set of chemicals by its own function. The fixed points of this dynamics are proven to correspond to self-sustaining sets of chemicals, which are functionally closed. Finally, as the main application, a theorem on the maximal self-sustaining set and a structure theorem on the lattice of functionally closed self-sustaining sets of chemicals are proven.

Complexity in Young's Lattice
Published in Annals of Pure and Applied Logic, Volume 173, Issue 4, 2022 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the complexity of the partial order relation of Young's lattice. The definable relations are characterized by establishing the maximal definability property modulo the single automorphism given by conjugation; consequently, as an ordered set Young's lattice has an undecidable elementary theory and is inherently non-finitely axiomatizable but every ideal generates a finitely axiomatizable universal class of equivalence relations. We end with conjectures concerning the complexities of the $Σ_1$ and $Σ_2$-theories.

Linear-semiorders and their incomparability graphs
A linear-interval order is the intersection of a linear order and an interval order. For this class of orders, several structural results have been known. This paper introduces a new subclass of linear-interval orders. We call a partial order a \emph{linear-semiorder} if it is the intersection of a linear order and a semiorder. We show a characterization and a polynomial-time recognition algorithm for linear-semiorders. We also prove that being a linear-semiorder is a comparability invariant, showing that incomparability graphs of linear-semiorders can be recognized in polynomial time.

Finite-dimensional modules of the universal Racah algebra and the universal additive DAHA of type $(C_1^\vee,C_1)$
Assume that $\mathbb F$ is an algebraically closed field with characteristic zero. The universal Racah algebra $\Re$ is a unital associative $\mathbb F$-algebra defined by generators and relations. The generators are $A,B, C, D$ and the relations state that $$ [A,B]=[B,C]=[C,A]=2D $$ and each of \begin{gather*} [A,D]+AC-BA, \qquad [B,D]+BA-CB, \qquad [C,D]+CB-AC \end{gather*} is central in $\Re$. The universal additive DAHA (double affine Hecke algebra) $\mathfrak H$ of type $(C_1^\vee,C_1)$ is a unital associative $\mathbb F$-algebra generated by $t_0,t_1,t_0^\vee,t_1^\vee$ and the relations state that $$ t_0+t_1+t_0^\vee+t_1^\vee=-1 $$ and each of $t_0^2, t_1^2, t_0^{\vee 2}, t_1^{\vee 2}$ is central in $\mathfrak H$. Each $\mathfrak H$-module is an $\Re$-module by pulling back via the algebra homomorphism $\Re\to \mathfrak H$ given by \begin{eqnarray*} A &\mapsto & \frac{(t_1^\vee+t_0^\vee)(t_1^\vee+t_0^\vee+2)}{4}, \\ B &\mapsto & \frac{(t_1+t_1^\vee)(t_1+t_1^\vee+2)}{4}, \\ C &\mapsto & \frac{(t_0^\vee+t_1)(t_0^\vee+t_1+2)}{4}. \end{eqnarray*} Let $V$ denote any finite-dimensional irreducible $\mathfrak H$-module. The set of $\Re$-submodules of $V$ forms a lattice under the inclusion partial order. We classify the lattices that arise by this construction. As a consequence, the $\Re$-module $V$ is completely reducible if and only if $t_0$ is diagonalizable on $V$.

A partial order and cluster-similarity metric on rooted phylogenetic trees
Metrics on rooted phylogenetic trees are integral to a number of areas of phylogenetic analysis. Cluster-similarity metrics have recently been introduced in order to limit skew in the distribution of distances, and to ensure that trees in the neighbourhood of each other have similar hierarchies. In the present paper we introduce a new cluster-similarity metric on rooted phylogenetic tree space that has an associated local operation, allowing for easy calculation of neighbourhoods, a trait that is desirable for MCMC calculations. The metric is defined by the distance on the Hasse diagram induced by a partial order on the set of rooted phylogenetic trees, itself based on the notion of a hierarchy-preserving map between trees. The partial order we introduce is a refinement of the well-known refinement order on hierarchies. Both the partial order and the hierarchy-preserving maps may also be of independent interest.
Budget Minimization with Precedence Constraints
Budget Minimization is a scheduling problem with precedence constraints, i.e., a scheduling problem on a partially ordered set of jobs $(N, \unlhd)$. A job $j \in N$ is available for scheduling, if all jobs $i \in N$ with $i \unlhd j$ are completed. Further, each job $j \in N$ is assigned real valued costs $c_{j}$, which can be negative or positive. A schedule is an ordering $j_{1}, \dots, j_{\vert N \vert}$ of all jobs in $N$. The budget of a schedule is the external investment needed to complete all jobs, i.e., it is $\max_{l \in \{0, \dots, \vert N \vert \} } \sum_{1 \le k \le l} c_{j_{k}}$. The goal is to find a schedule with minimum budget. Rafiey et al. (2015) showed that Budget Minimization is NP-hard following from a reduction from a molecular folding problem. We extend this result and prove that it is NP-hard to $α(N)$-approximate the minimum budget even on bipartite partial orders. We present structural insights that lead to arguably simpler algorithms and extensions of the results by Rafiey et al. (2015). In particular, we show that there always exists an optimal solution that partitions the set of jobs and schedules each subset independently of the other jobs. We use this structural insight to derive polynomial-time algorithms that solve the problem to optimality on series-parallel and convex bipartite partial orders.

Skew key polynomials and a generalized Littlewood-Richardson rule
Published • View PublicationBIB
Young's lattice is a partial order on integer partitions whose saturated chains correspond to standard Young tableaux, one type of combinatorial object that generates the Schur basis for symmetric functions. Generalizing Young's lattice, we introduce a new partial order on weak compositions that we call the key poset. Saturated chains in this poset correspond to standard key tableaux, the combinatorial objects that generate the key polynomials, a nonsymmetric polynomial generalization of the Schur basis. Generalizing skew Schur functions, we define skew key polynomials in terms of this new poset. Using weak dual equivalence, we give a nonnegative weak composition Littlewood-Richardson rule for the key expansion of skew key polynomials, generalizing the flagged Littlewood-Richardson rule of Reiner and Shimozono.

Asymptotic Semigroups and Two-sided Weak Orders
Various partial orders related to the structures of dual canonical monoids are investigated. It is shown that the nilpotent variety of a dual canonical monoid is equidimensional; its dimension is found. It is shown in type A that certain intervals of the Putcha poset of a dual canonical monoid are isomorphic to the Renner monoids of matrices. The notion of a two-sided weak order on a normal reductive monoid is introduced. A criterion, in terms of type maps, for the covering relations in a two-sided weak order to have degree 2 is found. It is shown that, for the unique equivariant divisor of a dual canonical monoid (the asymptotic semigroup), the covering relations of the two-sided weak order are always of degree 1. These computations provide new insights for the two-sided weak orders on Coxeter groups. In type A, some enumerative results for the covering relations are presented.

Motzkin Intervals and Valid Hook Configurations
We define a new natural partial order on Motzkin paths that serves as an intermediate step between two previously-studied partial orders. We provide a bijection between valid hook configurations of $312$-avoiding permutations and intervals in these new posets. We also show that valid hook configurations of permutations avoiding $132$ (or equivalently, $231$) are counted by the same numbers that count intervals in the Motzkin-Tamari posets that Fang recently introduced, and we give an asymptotic formula for these numbers. We then proceed to enumerate valid hook configurations of permutations avoiding other collections of patterns. We also provide enumerative conjectures, one of which links valid hook configurations of $312$-avoiding permutations, intervals in the new posets we have defined, and certain closed lattice walks with small steps that are confined to a quarter plane.
