Moments, cumulants and diagram formulae for non-linear functionals of random measures
This survey provides a unified discussion of multiple integrals, moments, cumulants and diagram formulae associated with functionals of completely random measures. Our approach is combinatorial, as it is based on the algebraic formalism of partition lattices and Möbius functions. Gaussian and Poisson measures are treated in great detail. We also present several combinatorial interpretations of some recent CLTs involving sequences of random variables belonging to a fixed Wiener chaos.

For any finite, real reflection group $W$, we construct a geometric basis for the homology of the corresponding non-crossing partition lattice. We relate this to the basis for the homology of the corresponding intersection lattice introduced by Björner and Wachs in \cite{BW} using a general construction of a generic affine hyperplane for the central hyperplane arrangement defined by $W$.

For each finite real reflection group $W$, we identify a copy of the type-$W$ simplicial generalised associahedron inside the corresponding simplicial permutahedron. This defines a bijection between the facets of the generalised associahedron and the elements of the type $W$ non-crossing partition lattice which is more tractable than previous such bijections. We show that the simplicial fan determined by this associahedron coincides with the Cambrian fan for $W$.

We prove some variants of the exponential formula and apply them to the multivariate Tutte polynomials (also known as Potts-model partition functions) of graphs. We also prove some further identities for the multivariate Tutte polynomial, which generalize an identity for counting connected graphs found by Riordan, Nijenhuis, Wilf and Kreweras and in more general form by Leroux and Gessel, and an identity for the inversion enumerator of trees found by Mallows, Riordan and Kreweras. Finally, we prove a generalization of Mobius inversion on the partition lattice.

We consider the problem of constructing a convex ear decomposition for a poset. The usual technique, first used by Nyman and Swartz, starts with a CL-labeling and uses this to shell the `ears' of the decomposition. We axiomatize the necessary conditions for this technique as a "CL-ced" or "EL-ced". We find an EL-ced of the d-divisible partition lattice, and a closely related convex ear decomposition of the coset lattice of a relatively complemented group. Along the way, we construct new EL-labelings of both lattices. The convex ear decompositions so constructed are formed by face lattices of hypercubes.
We then proceed to show that if two posets P_1 and P_2 have convex ear decompositions (CL-ceds), then their products P_1 \times P_2, P_1 \lrtimes P_2, and P_1 \urtimes P_2 also have convex ear decompositions (CL-ceds). An interesting special case is: if P_1 and P_2 have polytopal order complexes, then so do their products.
Chains in the noncrossing partition lattice

We establish recursions counting various classes of chains in the noncrossing partition lattice of a finite Coxeter group. The recursions specialize a general relation which is proven uniformly (i.e. without appealing to the classification of finite Coxeter groups) using basic facts about noncrossing partitions. We solve these recursions for each finite Coxeter group in the classification. Among other results, we obtain a simpler proof of a known uniform formula for the number of maximal chains of noncrossing partitions and a new uniform formula for the number of edges in the noncrossing partition lattice. All of our results extend to the m-divisible noncrossing partition lattice.

A bijection is presented between (1): partitions with conditions $f_j+f_{j+1}\leq k-1$ and $ f_1\leq i-1$, where $f_j$ is the frequency of the part $j$ in the partition, and (2): sets of $k-1$ ordered partitions $(n^{(1)}, n^{(2)}, ..., n^{(k-1)})$ such that $n^{(j)}_\ell \geq n^{(j)}_{\ell+1} + 2j$ and $ n^{(j)}_{m_j} \geq j+ {\rm max} (j-i+1,0)+ 2j (m_{j+1}+... + m_{k-1})$, where $m_j$ is the number of parts in $n^{(j)}$. This bijection entails an elementary and constructive proof of the Andrews multiple-sum enumerating partitions with frequency conditions. A very natural relation between the $k-1$ ordered partitions and restricted paths is also presented, which reveals our bijection to be a modification of Bressoud's version of the Burge correspondence.

We prove analogues for sub-posets of the Dowling lattices of the results of Calderbank, Hanlon, and Robinson on homology of sub-posets of the partition lattices. The technical tool used is the wreath product analogue of the tensor species of Joyal.
Noncrossing partitions in surprising locations

Certain mathematical structures make a habit of reoccuring in the most diverse list of settings. Some obvious examples exhibiting this intrusive type of behavior include the Fibonacci numbers, the Catalan numbers, the quaternions, and the modular group. In this article, the focus is on a lesser known example: the noncrossing partition lattice. The focus of the article is a gentle introduction to the lattice itself in three of its many guises: as a way to encode parking functions, as a key part of the foundations of noncommutative probability, and as a building block for a contractible space acted on by a braid group. Since this article is aimed primarily at nonspecialists, each area is briefly introduced along the way.

Replacing the usual notion of quotient sets by the notion of orbiquotient sets we obtain a generalization of Pólya theory. The key ingredient of our extended theory is the definition of the orbicycle index polynomial which we compute in several examples. We apply our theory to the study of orbicycles on orbiquotient sets.

We show that the Grothendieck bialgebra of the semi-tower of partition lattice algebras is isomorphic to the graded dual of the bialgebra of symmetric functions in noncommutative variables. In particular this isomorphism singles out a canonical new basis of the symmetric functions in noncommutative variables which would be an analogue of the Schur function basis for this bialgebra.

We give a case-free proof that the lattice of noncrossing partitions associated to any finite real reflection group is EL-shellable. Shellability of these lattices was open for the groups of type $D_n$ and those of exceptional type and rank at least three.

We exhibit an identity of abstract simplicial complexes between the well-studied complex of trees and the reduced minimal nested set complex of the partition lattice. We conclude that the order complex of the partition lattice can be obtained from the complex of trees by a sequence of stellar subdivisions. We provide an explicit cohomology basis for the complex of trees that emerges naturally from this context.
Motivated by these results, we review the generalization of complexes of trees to complexes of $k$-trees by Hanlon, and we propose yet another, in the context of nested set complexes more natural, generalization.
A note on blockers in posets
The blocker $A^{*}$ of an antichain $A$ in a finite poset $P$ is the set of elements minimal with the property of having with each member of $A$ a common predecessor. The following is done:
1. The posets $P$ for which $A^{**}=A$ for all antichains are characterized.
2. The blocker $A^*$ of a symmetric antichain in the partition lattice is characterized.
3. Connections with the question of finding minimal size blocking sets for certain set families are discussed.
Geometrically constructed bases for homology of partition lattices of types A, B and D
We use the theory of hyperplane arrangements to construct natural bases for the homology of partition lattices of types A, B and D. This extends and explains the "splitting basis" for the homology of the partition lattice given in [Wa96], thus answering a question asked by R. Stanley. More explicitly, the following general technique is presented and utilized. Let A be a central and essential hyperplane arrangement in R^d. Let R_1,...,R_k be the bounded regions of a generic hyperplane section of A. We show that there are induced polytopal cycles ρ_{R_i} in the homology of the proper part \bar{L_A} of the intersection lattice such that {ρ_{R_i}}_{i=1,...,k} is a basis for \tilde H_{d-2}(\bar{L_A}). This geometric method for constructing combinatorial homology bases is applied to the Coxeter arrangements of types A, B and D, and to some interpolating arrangements.

We introduce a notion of lexicographic shellability for pure, balanced boolean cell complexes, modelled after the $CL$-shellability criterion of Björner and Wachs for posets and its generalization by Kozlov called $CC$-shellability. We give a lexicographic shelling for the quotient of the order complex of a Boolean algebra of rank $2n$ by the action of the wreath product $S_2\wr S_n$ of symmetric groups, and we provide a partitioning for the quotient complex $Δ(Π_n)/S_n $.
Stanley asked for a description of the symmetric group representation $β_S $ on the homology of the rank-selected partition lattice $Π_n^S $ in [St2], and in particular he asked when the multiplicity $b_S(n)$ of the trivial representation in $β_S$ is 0. One consequence of the partitioning for $\dps $ is a (fairly complicated) combinatorial interpretation for $b_S(n) $; another is a simple proof of Hanlon's result that $b_{1,..., i}(n)=0$. Using a result of Garsia and Stanton, we deduce from our shelling for $Δ(B_{2n})/S_2 \wr S_n$ that the ring of invariants $k[x_1,..., x_{2n}]^{S_2\wr S_n}$ is Cohen-Macaulay over any field $k$.
Multiplicity of the trivial representation in rank-selected homology of the partition lattice

We study the multiplicity $b_S(n)$ of the trivial representation in the symmetric group representations $β_S$ on the (top) homology of the rank-selected partition lattice $Π_n^S$. We break the possible rank sets $S$ into three cases: (1) $1\not\in S$, (2) $S=1,..., i$ for $i\ge 1$ and (3) $S=1,..., i,j_1,..., j_l$ for $i,l\ge 1$, $j_1 > i+1$. It was previously shown by Hanlon that $b_S(n)=0$ for $S=1,..., i$. We use a partitioning for $Δ(Π_n)/S_n$ due to Hersh to confirm a conjecture of Sundaram that $b_S(n)>0$ for $1\not\in S$. On the other hand, we use the spectral sequence of a filtered complex to show $b_S(n)=0$ for $S=1,..., i,j_1,..., j_l$ unless a certain type of chain of support $S$ exists. The partitioning for $Δ(Π_n)/S_n$ allows us then to show that a large class of rank sets $S=1,..., i,j_1,..., j_l$ for which such a chain exists do satisfy $b_S(n)>0$. We also generalize the partitioning for $Δ(Π_n)/S_n$ to $Δ(Π_n)/S_λ$; when $λ= (n-1,1)$, this partitioning leads to a proof of a conjecture of Sundaram about $S_1\times S_{n-1}$-representations on the homology of the partition lattice.

A combinatorial formula is derived which expresses free cumulants in terms of classical comulants. As a corollary, we give a combinatorial interpretation of free cumulants of classical distributions, notably Gaussian and Poisson distributions. The latter count connected pairings and connected set partitions respectively. The proof relies on Moebius inversion on the partition lattice.

Left-modularity is a concept that generalizes modularity in lattice theory. In this paper, we give a characterization of left-modular elements and derive two formulae for the characteristic polynomial of a lattice with such an element, one of which generalizes Stanley's Partial Factorization Theorem for a geometric lattice with a modular element. Both formulae provide us with inductive proofs of Blass and Sagan's Total Factorization Theorem for LL lattices. The characteristic polynomials and Mobius functions of non-crossing partition lattices and shuffle posets are computed as examples.
A self-dual poset on objects counted by the Catalan numbers and a type-B analogue
We introduce two partially ordered sets, $P^A_n$ and $P^B_n$, of the same cardinalities as the type-A and type-B noncrossing partition lattices. The ground sets of $P^A_n$ and $P^B_n$ are subsets of the symmetric and the hyperoctahedral groups, consisting of permutations which avoid certain patterns. The order relation is given by (strict) containment of the descent sets. In each case, by means of an explicit order-preserving bijection, we show that the poset of restricted permutations is an extension of the refinement order on noncrossing partitions. Several structural properties of these permutation posets follow, including self-duality and the strong Sperner property. We also discuss posets $Q^A_n$ and $Q^B_n$ similarly associated with noncrossing partitions, defined by means of the excedence sets of suitable pattern-avoiding subsets of the symmetric and hyperoctahedral groups.
