On non-conjugate Coxeter elements in well-generated reflection groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given an irreducible well-generated complex reflection group W with Coxeter number h, we call a Coxeter element any regular element (in the sense of Springer) of order h in W; this is a slight extension of the most common notion of Coxeter element. We show that the class of these Coxeter elements forms a single orbit in W under the action of reflection automorphisms. For Coxeter and Shephard groups, this implies that an element c is a Coxeter element if and only if there exists a simple system S of reflections such that c is the product of the generators in S. We moreover deduce multiple further implications of this property. In particular, we obtain that all noncrossing partition lattices of W associated to different Coxeter elements are isomorphic. We also prove that there is a simply transitive action of the Galois group of the field of definition of W on the set of conjugacy classes of Coxeter elements. Finally, we extend several of these properties to Springer's regular elements of arbitrary order.

A combinatorial proof of strict unimodality for $q$-binomial coefficients
Published • View PublicationBIB
Pak and Panova recently proved that the $q$-binomial coefficient ${m+n \choose m}_q$ is a strictly unimodal polynomial in $q$ for $m,n \geq 8$, via the representation theory of the symmetric group. We give a direct combinatorial proof of their result by characterizing when a product of chains is strictly unimodal and then applying O'Hara's structure theorem for the partition lattice $L(m,n)$. In fact, we prove a stronger result: if $m, n \geq 8d$, and $2d \leq r \leq mn/2$, then the $r$-th rank of $L(m,n)$ has at least $d$ more elements that the next lower rank.

Huffman coding as an algorithm to construct chains in partition lattices
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Huffman coding algorithm is interpreted in the lattice of partitions of the source alphabet. Maximal chains in the partition lattice correspond to linear extensions of tree orders, and those among the chains that exhibit a simple greedy property correspond precisely to executions of the Huffman algorithm.

The toric h-vector of a cubical complex in terms of noncrossing partition statistics
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper introduces a new and simple statistic on noncrossing partitions that expresses each coordinate of the toric $h$-vector of a cubical complex, written in the basis of the Adin $h$-vector entries, as the total weight of all noncrossing partitions. The same model may also be used to obtain a very simple combinatorial interpretation of the contribution of a cubical shelling component to the toric $h$-vector. In this model, a strengthening of the symmetry expressed by the Dehn-Sommerville equations may be derived from the self-duality of the noncrossing partition lattice, exhibited by the involution of Simion and Ullman.
Equivariant Topology of Configuration Spaces

We study the Fadell-Husseini index of the configuration space F(R^d,n) with respect to different subgroups of the symmetric group S_n. For p prime and d>0, we completely determine Index_{Z/p}(F(R^d,p);F_p) and partially describe Index{(Z/p)^k}(F(R^d,p^k);F_p). In this process we obtain results of independent interest, including: (1) an extended equivariant Goresky-MacPherson formula, (2) a complete description of the top homology of the partition lattice Pi_p as an F_p[Z_p]-module, and (3) a generalized Dold theorem for elementary abelian groups. The results on the Fadell-Husseini index yield a new proof of the Nandakumar & Ramana Rao conjecture for a prime. For n=p^k a prime power, we compute the Lusternik-Schnirelmann category cat(F(R^d,n)/S_n)=(d-1)(n-1). Moreover, we extend coincidence results related to the Borsuk-Ulam theorem, as obtained by Cohen & Connett, Cohen & Lusk, and Karasev & Volovikov.

Polyhedral Combinatorics of UPGMA Cones
Published • View PublicationBIB
Distance-based methods such as UPGMA (Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean) continue to play a significant role in phylogenetic research. We use polyhedral combinatorics to analyze the natural subdivision of the positive orthant induced by classifying the input vectors according to tree topologies returned by the algorithm. The partition lattice informs the study of UPGMA trees. We give a closed form for the extreme rays of UPGMA cones on n taxa, and compute the normalized volumes of the UPGMA cones for small n. On maximal chains in the non-crossing partition lattice
Published • View PublicationBIB
A weak order on the set of maximal chains of the non-crossing partition lattice is introduced and studied. A $0$-Hecke algebra action is used to compute the radius of the graph on these chains in which two chains are adjacent if they differ in exactly one element.

Symmetries on the lattice of $k$-bounded partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 2002 R. Suter identified a dihedral symmetry on certain order ideals in Young's lattice and gave a combinatorial action on the partitions in these order ideals. Viewing this result geometrically, the order ideals can be seen to be seen to be in bijection with the alcoves in a 2-fold dilation in the geometric realization of the affine symmetric group. By considering the m-fold dilation we observe a larger set of order ideals in the k-bounded partition lattice that was considered by L. Lapointe, A. Lascoux, and J. Morse in the study of k-Schur functions. We identify the order ideal and the cyclic action on it explicitly in a geometric and combinatorial form.

Tropical decomposition of Young's partition lattice
Published • View PublicationBIB
Young's partition lattice $L(m,n)$ consists of unordered partitions having $m$ parts where each part is at most $n$. Using methods from complex algebraic geometry, R. Stanley proved that $L(m,n)$ is rank-symmetric, unimodal, and strongly Sperner. Moreover, he conjectured that $L(m,n)$ has a stronger property called symmetric chain decomposition. Despite many efforts, this conjecture has only been proved for $\min(m,n)\leq 4$. In this paper, we decompose $L(m,n)$ into level sets for certain tropical polynomials derived from the secant varieties of the rational normal curve in projective space, and we find that the resulting subposets have an elementary raising and lowering algorithm. As a corollary, we obtain a symmetric chain decomposition for the subposet of $L(m,n)$ consisting of "sufficiently generic" partitions.

On the shard intersection order of a Coxeter group
Published • View PublicationBIB
Introduced by Reading, the shard intersection order of a finite Coxeter group $W$ is a lattice structure on the elements of $W$ that contains the poset of noncrossing partitions $NC(W)$ as a sublattice. Building on work of Bancroft in the case of the symmetric group, we provide combinatorial models for shard intersections of all classical types, and use this understanding to prove the shard intersection order is EL-shellable. Further, inspired by work of Simion and Ullman on the lattice of noncrossing partitions, we show that the shard intersection order on the symmetric group admits a symmetric boolean decomposition, i.e., a partition into disjoint boolean algebras whose middle ranks coincide with the middle rank of the poset. Our decomposition also yields a new symmetric boolean decomposition of the noncrossing partition lattice.

Nonlocal, noncommutative diagrammatics and the linked cluster Theorems
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recent developments in quantum chemistry, perturbative quantum field theory, statistical physics or stochastic differential equations require the introduction of new families of Feynman-type diagrams. These new families arise in various ways. In some generalizations of the classical diagrams, the notion of Feynman propagator is extended to generalized propagators connecting more than two vertices of the graphs. In some others (introduced in the present article), the diagrams, associated to noncommuting product of operators inherit from the noncommutativity of the products extra graphical properties. The purpose of the present article is to introduce a general way of dealing with such diagrams. We prove in particular a "universal" linked cluster theorem and introduce, in the process, a Feynman-type "diagrammatics" that allows to handle simultaneously nonlocal (Coulomb-type) interactions, the generalized diagrams arising from the study of interacting systems (such as the ones where the ground state is not the vacuum but e.g. a vacuum perturbed by a magnetic or electric field, by impurities...) or Wightman fields (that is, expectation values of products of interacting fields). Our diagrammatics seems to be the first attempt to encode in a unified algebraic framework such a wide variety of situations. In the process, we promote two ideas. First, Feynman-type diagrammatics belong mathematically to the theory of linear forms on combinatorial Hopf algebras. Second, linked cluster-type theorems rely ultimately on Möbius inversion on the partition lattice. The two theories should therefore be introduced and presented accordingly

Avoiding Colored Partitions of Lengths Two and Three
Pattern avoidance in the symmetric group $S_n$ has provided a number of useful connections between seemingly unrelated problems from stack-sorting to Schubert varieties. Recent work has generalized these results to $S_n\wr C_c$, the objects of which can be viewed as "colored permutations". Another body of research that has grown from the study of pattern avoidance in permutations is pattern avoidance in $Π_n$, the set of set partitions of $[n]$. Pattern avoidance in set partitions is a generalization of the well-studied notion of noncrossing partitions. Motivated by recent results in pattern avoidance in $S_n \wr C_c$ we provide a catalog of initial results for pattern avoidance in colored partitions, $Π_n \wr C_c$. We note that colored set partitions are not a completely new concept. \emph{Signed} (2-colored) set partitions appear in the work of Björner and Wachs involving the homology of partition lattices. However, we seek to study these objects in a new enumerative context.

Lyashko-Looijenga morphisms and submaximal factorisations of a Coxeter element
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics 36, Issue 4 (2012), pp. 649-673 • View PublicationBIB
When W is a finite reflection group, the noncrossing partition lattice NCP_W of type W is a rich combinatorial object, extending the notion of noncrossing partitions of an n-gon. A formula (for which the only known proofs are case-by-case) expresses the number of multichains of a given length in NCP_W as a generalised Fuss-Catalan number, depending on the invariant degrees of W. We describe how to understand some specifications of this formula in a case-free way, using an interpretation of the chains of NCP_W as fibers of a Lyashko-Looijenga covering (LL), constructed from the geometry of the discriminant hypersurface of W. We study algebraically the map LL, describing the factorisations of its discriminant and its Jacobian. As byproducts, we generalise a formula stated by K. Saito for real reflection groups, and we deduce new enumeration formulas for certain factorisations of a Coxeter element of W.

The Discrete Fundamental Group of the Associahedron, and the Exchange Module
Published • View PublicationBIB
The associahedron is an object that has been well studied and has numerous applications, particularly in the theory of operads, the study of non-crossing partitions, lattice theory and more recently in the study of cluster algebras. We approach the associahedron from the point of view of discrete homotopy theory. We study the abelianization of the discrete fundamental group, and show that it is free abelian of rank $\binom{n+2}{4}$. We also find a combinatorial description for a basis of this rank. We also introduce the exchange module of the type $A_n$ cluster algebra, used to model the relations in the cluster algebra. We use the discrete fundamental group to the study of exchange module, and show that it is also free abelian of rank $\binom{n+2}{3}$.

Groupes de réflexion, géométrie du discriminant et partitions non-croisées
Reflection groups, geometry of the discriminant and noncrossing partitions. When W is a well-generated complex reflection group, the noncrossing partition lattice NCP_W of type W is a very rich combinatorial object, extending the notion of noncrossing partitions of an n-gon. This structure appears in several algebraic setups (dual braid monoid, cluster algebras...). Many combinatorial properties of NCP_W are proved case-by-case, using the classification of reflection groups. It is the case for Chapoton's formula, expressing the number of multichains of a given length in the lattice NCP_W, in terms of the invariant degrees of W. This thesis work is motivated by the search for a geometric explanation of this formula, which could lead to a uniform understanding of the connections between the combinatorics of NCP_W and the invariant theory of W. The starting point is to use the Lyashko-Looijenga covering (LL), based on the geometry of the discriminant of W. In the first chapter, some topological constructions of Bessis are refined, allowing to relate the fibers of LL with block factorisations of a Coxeter element. Then we prove a transitivity property for the Hurwitz action of the braid group B_n on certain factorisations. Chapter 2 is devoted to certain finite polynomial extensions, and to properties about their Jacobians and discriminants. In Chapter 3, these results are applied to the extension defined by the covering LL. We deduce --- with a case-free proof --- formulas for the number of submaximal factorisations of a Coxeter element in W, in terms of the homogeneous degrees of the irreducible components of the discriminant and Jacobian for LL.

The Möbius function of partitions with restricted block size
Published in Advances in Applied Math. 39 (2007), 283--292 • Search Publication
We study filters in the partition lattice formed by restricting to partitions by type. The Möbius function is determined in terms of the easier-to-compute descent set statistics on permutations and the Möbius function of filters in the lattice of integer compositions. When the underlying integer partition is a knapsack partition, the Möbius function on integer compositions is determined by a topological argument. In this proof the permutahedron makes a cameo appearance.

Exponential Dowling structures
Published in European J Combinatorics, 30 (2009), 311--326 • View PublicationBIB
The notion of exponential Dowling structures is introduced, generalizing Stanley's original theory of exponential structures. Enumerative theory is developed to determine the Möbius function of exponential Dowling structures, including a restriction of these structures to elements whose types satisfy a semigroup condition. Stanley's study of permutations associated with exponential structures leads to a similar vein of study for exponential Dowling structures. In particular, for the extended r-divisible partition lattice we show the Möbius function is, up to a sign, the number of permutations in the symmetric group on rn+k elements having descent set {r, 2r, ..., nr}. Using Wachs' original EL-labeling of the r-divisible partition lattice, the extended r-divisible partition lattice is shown to be EL-shellable.

Noncrossing partitions and the shard intersection order
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define a new lattice structure on the elements of a finite Coxeter group W. This lattice, called the shard intersection order, is weaker than the weak order and has the noncrossing partition lattice NC(W) as a sublattice. The new construction of NC(W) yields a new proof that NC(W) is a lattice. The shard intersection order is graded and its rank generating function is the W-Eulerian polynomial. Many order-theoretic properties of the shard intersection order, like Mobius number, number of maximal chains, etc., are exactly analogous to the corresponding properties of NC(W). There is a natural dimension-preserving bijection between simplices in the order complex of the shard intersection order (i.e. chains in the shard intersection order) and simplices in a certain pulling triangulation of the W-permutohedron. Restricting the bijection to the order complex of NC(W) yields a bijection to simplices in a pulling triangulation of the W-associahedron. The shard intersection order is defined indirectly via the polyhedral geometry of the reflecting hyperplanes of W. Indeed, most of the results of the paper are proven in the more general setting of simplicial hyperplane arrangements.

Orbites d'Hurwitz des factorisations primitives d'un élément de Coxeter
Published in Journal of Algebra 323 (2010), pp. 1432-1453 • View PublicationBIB
We study the Hurwitz action of the classical braid group on factorisations of a Coxeter element c in a well-generated complex reflection group W. It is well-known that the Hurwitz action is transitive on the set of reduced decompositions of c in reflections. Our main result is a similar property for the primitive factorisations of c, i.e. factorisations with only one factor which is not a reflection. The motivation is the search for a geometric proof of Chapoton's formula for the number of chains of given length in the non-crossing partitions lattice NCP_W. Our proof uses the properties of the Lyashko-Looijenga covering and the geometry of the discriminant of W.

Complete homogeneous symmetric polynomials in Jucys-Murphy elements and the Weingarten function
A connection is made between complete homogeneous symmetric polynomials in Jucys-Murphy elements and the unitary Weingarten function from random matrix theory. In particular we show that $h_r(J_1,...,J_n),$ the complete homogeneous symmetric polynomial of degree $r$ in the JM elements, coincides with the $r$th term in the asymptotic expansion of the Weingarten function. We use this connection to determine precisely which conjugacy classes occur in the class basis resolution of $h_r(J_1,...,J_n),$ and to explicitly determine the coefficients of the classes of minimal height when $r < n.$ These coefficients, which turn out to be products of Catalan numbers, are governed by the Moebius function of the non-crossing partition lattice $NC(n).$
