In this paper we conjecture combinatorial Rogers-Ramanujan type colored partition identities related to standard representations of the affine Lie algebra of type $C^{(1)}_\ell$, $\ell\geq2$, and we conjecture similar colored partition identities with no obvious connection to representation theory of affine Lie algebras.
The Stylic Monoid

The free monoid $A^*$ on a finite totally ordered alphabet $A$ acts at the left on columns, by Schensted left insertion. This defines a finite monoid, denoted $Styl(A)$ and called the stylic monoid. It is canonically a quotient of the plactic monoid. Main results are: the cardinality of $Styl(A)$ is equal to the number of partitions of a set on $|A|+1$ elements. We give a bijection with so-called $N$-tableaux, similar to Schensted's algorithm, explaining this fact. Presentation of $Styl(A)$: it is generated by $A$ subject to the plactic (Knuth) relations and the idempotent relations $a^2=a$, $a\in A$. The canonical involutive anti-automorphism on $A^*$, which reverses the order on $A$, induces an involution of $Styl(A)$, which similarly to the corresponding involution of the plactic monoid, may be computed by an evacuation-like operation (Schützenberger involution on tableaux) on so-called standard immaculate tableaux (which are in bijection with partitions). The monoid $Styl(A)$ is $J$-trivial, and the $J$-order of $Styl(A)$ is graded: the co-rank is given by the number of elements in the $N$-tableau. The monoid $Styl(A)$ is the syntactic monoid for the the function which associates to each word $w\in A^*$ the length of its longest strictly decreasing subword.

Given a finite irreducible Coxeter group $W$ with a fixed Coxeter element $c$, we define the Coxeter pop-tsack torsing operator $\mathsf{Pop}_T:W\to W$ by $\mathsf{Pop}_T(w)=w\cdotπ_T(w)^{-1}$, where $π_T(w)$ is the join in the noncrossing partition lattice $\mathrm{NC}(w,c)$ of the set of reflections lying weakly below $w$ in the absolute order. This definition serves as a "Bessis dual" version of the first author's notion of a Coxeter pop-stack sorting operator, which, in turn, generalizes the pop-stack-sorting map on symmetric groups. We show that if $W$ is coincidental or of type $D$, then the identity element of $W$ is the unique periodic point of $\mathsf{Pop}_T$ and the maximum size of a forward orbit of $\mathsf{Pop}_T$ is the Coxeter number $h$ of $W$. In each of these types, we obtain a natural lift from $W$ to the dual braid monoid of $W$. We also prove that $W$ is coincidental if and only if it has a unique forward orbit of size $h$. For arbitrary $W$, we show that the forward orbit of $c^{-1}$ under $\mathsf{Pop}_T$ has size $h$ and is isolated in the sense that none of the non-identity elements of the orbit have preimages lying outside of the orbit.
Symmetric Set Coloring of Signed Graphs

There are many concepts of signed graph coloring which are defined by assigning colors to the vertices of the graphs. These concepts usually differ in the number of self-inverse colors used. We introduce a unifying concept for this kind of coloring by assigning elements from symmetric sets to the vertices of the signed graphs. In the first part of the paper, we study colorings with elements from symmetric sets where the number of self-inverse elements is fixed. We prove a Brooks'-type theorem and upper bounds for the corresponding chromatic numbers in terms of the chromatic number of the underlying graph. These results are used in the second part where we introduce the symset-chromatic number $χ_{sym}(G,σ)$ of a signed graph $(G,σ)$. We show that the symset-chromatic number gives the minimum partition of a signed graph into independent sets and non-bipartite antibalanced subgraphs. In particular, $χ_{sym}(G,σ) \leq χ(G)$. In the final section we show that these colorings can also be formalized as $DP$-colorings.
Discrete-to-Continuous Extensions: Lovász extension, optimizations and eigenvalue problems
In this paper, we use various versions of Lovász extension to systematically derive continuous formulations of problems from discrete mathematics. This will take place in the following context:
(1) For combinatorial optimization problems in quotient form, we systematically develop equivalent continuous versions, thereby making tools from convex optimization, fractional programming and more general continuous algorithms like the stochastic subgradient method available for such optimization problems.
(2) For some combinatorial quantities like Cheeger-type constants, we suggest a nonlinear eigenvalue problem for a pair of Lovász extensions of certain functions, which encodes certain combinatorial structures.
This theory has several applications to quantitative and combinatorial problems, including:
(a) The equivalent continuous representations for the max $k$-cut problem, various Cheeger sets and isoperimetric constants are constructed. This also initiates a study of Dirichlet and Neumann 1-Laplacians on graphs, in which the nodal domain property and Cheeger-type equalities are presented.
(b) Also, we derive a new equivalent continuous representation of the graph independence number, which can be compared with the Motzkin-Straus theorem. More importantly, an equivalent continuous optimization for the chromatic number is provided, which seems to be the first continuous representation of the graph vertex coloring number. We provide the first continuous reformulation of the frustration index in signed networks, and we find a connection to the so-called modularity measure. Graph matching numbers, submodular vertex covers and multiway partition problems can also be studied in this framework.
Quantized cohomological Hall algebra of the $d$-loop quiver revisited

Let $Λ$ be the set of partitions of length $\geq 0$. We introduce an $\mathbb{N}$-graded algebra $\mathbb{A}_q^d(Λ)$ associated to $Λ$, which can be viewed as a quantization of the algebra of partitions defined by Reineke. The multiplication of $\mathbb{A}^d_q(Λ)$ has some kind of quasi-commutativity, and the associativity comes from combinatorial properties of certain polynomials appeared in the quantized cohomological Hall algebra $\mathcal{H}^d_q$ of the $d$-loop quiver. It turns out that $\mathbb{A}^d_q(Λ)$ is isomorphic to $\mathcal{H}^d_q$, thus can be viewed as a combinatorial realization for $\mathcal{H}^d_q$.
Statistics for Unimodal Sequences

We prove a number of limiting distributions for statistics for unimodal sequences of positive integers by adapting a probabilistic framework for integer partitions introduced by Fristedt. The difficulty in applying the direct analogue of Fristedt's techniques to unimodal sequences lies in the fact that the generating function for partitions is an infinite product, while that of unimodal sequences is not. Essentially, we get around this by conditioning on the size of the largest part and working uniformly on contributing summands. Our framework may be used to derive many distributions, and our results include joint distributions for largest parts and multiplicities of small parts. We discuss ranks as well. We further obtain analogous results for strongly unimodal sequences.

We introduce a remarkable new family of norms on the space of $n \times n$ complex matrices. These norms arise from the combinatorial properties of symmetric functions, and their construction and validation involve probability theory, partition combinatorics, and trace polynomials in noncommuting variables. Our norms enjoy many desirable analytic and algebraic properties, such as an elegant determinantal interpretation and the ability to distinguish certain graphs that other matrix norms cannot. Furthermore, they give rise to new dimension-independent tracial inequalities. Their potential merits further investigation.
All-orders asymptotics of tensor model observables from symmetries of restricted partitions

The counting of the dimension of the space of $U(N) \times U(N) \times U(N)$ polynomial invariants of a complex $3$-index tensor as a function of degree $n$ is known in terms of a sum of squares of Kronecker coefficients. For $n \le N$, the formula can be expressed in terms of a sum of symmetry factors of partitions of $n$ denoted $Z_3(n)$. We derive the large $n$ all-orders asymptotic formula for $ Z_3(n)$ making contact with high order results previously obtained numerically. The derivation relies on the dominance in the sum, of partitions with many parts of length $1$. The dominance of other small parts in restricted partition sums leads to related asymptotic results. The result for the $3$-index tensor observables gives the large $n$ asymptotic expansion for the counting of bipartite ribbon graphs with $n$ edges, and for the dimension of the associated Kronecker permutation centralizer algebra. We explain how the different terms in the asymptotics are associated with probability distributions over ribbon graphs. The large $n$ dominance of small parts also leads to conjectured formulae for the asymptotics of invariants for general $d$-index tensors. The coefficients of $ 1/n$ in these expansions involve Stirling numbers of the second kind along with restricted partition sums.

The Tautological Lamination arises in holomorphic dynamics as a combinatorial model for the geometry of 1-dimensional slices of the Shift Locus. In each degree $q$ the tautological lamination defines an iterated sequence of partitions of $1$ (one for each integer $n$) into numbers of the form $2^m q^{-n}$. Denote by $N_q(n,m)$ the number of times $2^mq^{-n}$ arises in the $n$th partition. We prove a recursion formula for $N_q(n,0)$, and a gap theorem: $N_q(n,n)=1$ and $N_q(n,m)=0$ for $\lfloor n/2 \rfloor < m < n$.
Component behaviour and excess of random bipartite graphs near the critical point

The binomial random bipartite graph $G(n,n,p)$ is the random graph formed by taking two partition classes of size $n$ and including each edge between them independently with probability $p$. It is known that this model exhibits a similar phase transition as that of the binomial random graph $G(n,p)$ as $p$ passes the critical point of $\frac{1}{n}$. We study the component structure of this model near to the critical point. We show that, as with $G(n,p)$, for an appropriate range of $p$ there is a unique `giant' component and we determine asymptotically its order and excess. We also give more precise results for the distribution of the number of components of a fixed order in this range of $p$. These results rely on new bounds for the number of bipartite graphs with a fixed number of vertices and edges, which we also derive.
A Refinement of the Murnaghan-Nakayama Rule by Descents for Border Strip Tableaux

Lusztig's fake degree is the generating polynomial for the major index of standard Young tableaux of a given shape. Results of Springer and James & Kerber imply that, mysteriously, its evaluation at a $k$-th primitive root of unity yields the number of border strip tableaux with all strips of size $k$, up to sign. This is essentially the special case of the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for evaluating an irreducible character of the symmetric group at a rectangular partition.
We refine this result to standard Young tableaux and border strip tableaux with a given number of descents. To do so, we introduce a new statistic for border strip tableaux, extending the classical definition of descents in standard Young tableaux. Curiously, it turns out that our new statistic is very closely related to a descent set for tuples of standard Young tableaux appearing in the quasisymmetric expansion of LLT polynomials given by Haglund, Haiman and Loehr.
Minimal excludant over partitions into distinct parts

The average size of the "smallest gap" of a partition was studied by Grabner and Knopfmacher in 2006. Recently, Andrews and Newman, motivated by the work of Fraenkel and Peled, studied the concept of the "smallest gap" under the name "minimal excludant" of a partition and rediscovered a result of Grabner and Knopfmacher. In the present paper, we study the sum of the minimal excludants over partitions into distinct parts, and interestingly we observe that it has a nice connection with Ramanujan's function $σ(q)$. As an application, we derive a stronger version of a result of Uncu.
Friendly bisections of random graphs

Resolving a conjecture of Füredi from 1988, we prove that with high probability, the random graph $G(n,1/2)$ admits a friendly bisection of its vertex set, i.e., a partition of its vertex set into two parts whose sizes differ by at most one in which $n-o(n)$ vertices have at least as many neighbours in their own part as across. The engine of our proof is a new method to study stochastic processes driven by degree information in random graphs; this involves combining enumeration techniques with an abstract second moment argument.

For $G=G_{n, 1/2}$, the Erdős--Renyi random graph, let $X_n$ be the random variable representing the number of distinct partitions of $V(G)$ into sets $A_1, \ldots, A_q$ so that the degree of each vertex in $G[A_i]$ is divisible by $q$ for all $i\in[q]$. We prove that if $q\geq 3$ is odd then $X_n\xrightarrow{d}{\mathrm{Po}(1/q!)}$, and if $q \geq 4$ is even then $X_n\xrightarrow{d}{\mathrm{Po}(2^q/q!)}$. More generally, we show that the distribution is still asymptotically Poisson when we require all degrees in $G[A_i]$ to be congruent to $x_i$ modulo $q$ for each $i\in[q]$, where the residues $x_i$ may be chosen freely. For $q=2$, the distribution is not asymptotically Poisson, but it can be determined explicitly.
New families of permutation trinomials constructed by permutations of $μ_{q+1}$
Permutation polynomials are of particular significance in several areas of applied mathematics, such as Coding theory and Cryptography. Many recent constructions are based on the Akbary-Ghioca-Wang (AGW) criterion. Along this line of research, we provide new classes of permutation trinomials in $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$ of the form $f(x)=x^r h(x^{q-1})$, by studying permutations of the set of $(q+1)$-th roots of unity, which look like monomials on the sets of suitable partitions.
Generalized Frobenius partitions, Motzkin paths, and Jacobi forms

We show how Andrews' generating functions for generalized Frobenius partitions can be understood within the theory of Eichler and Zagier as specific coefficients of certain Jacobi forms. This reformulation leads to a recursive process which yields explicit formulas for the generalized Frobenius partition generating functions in terms of infinite $q$-products. In particular, we show that specific examples of our result easily reestablish previously known formulas, and we describe new congruences, both conjectural and proven, in additional cases. The modular structure of Jacobi forms indicates that \emph{all} of the coefficients of the forms are of interest. We give a combinatorial definition of these "companion series" and explore their combinatorics via the counting of Motzkin paths.
Total Coloring and Total Matching: Polyhedra and Facets

A total coloring of a graph $G = (V, E)$ is an assignment of colors to vertices and edges such that neither two adjacent vertices nor two incident edges get the same color, and, for each edge, the end-points and the edge itself receive different colors. Any valid total coloring induces a partition of the elements of $G$ into total matchings, which are defined as subsets of vertices and edges that can take the same color. In this paper, we propose Integer Linear Programming models for both the Total Coloring and the Total Matching problems, and we study the strength of the corresponding Linear Programming relaxations. The total coloring is formulated as the problem of finding the minimum number of total matchings that cover all the graph elements. This covering formulation can be solved by a Column Generation algorithm, where the pricing subproblem corresponds to the Weighted Total Matching Problem. Hence, we study the Total Matching Polytope. We introduce three families of nontrivial valid inequalities: vertex-clique inequalities based on standard clique inequalities of the Stable Set Polytope, congruent-$2k3$ cycle inequalities based on the parity of the vertex set induced by the cycle, and even-clique inequalities induced by complete subgraphs of even order. We prove that congruent-$2k3$ cycle inequalities are facet-defining only when $k = 4$, while the vertex-clique and even-cliques are always facet-defining. Finally, we present preliminary computational results of a Column Generation algorithm for the Total Coloring Problem and a Cutting Plane algorithm for the Total Matching Problem.
Schur functions in noncommuting variables

In 2004 Rosas and Sagan asked whether there was a way to define a basis in the algebra of symmetric functions in noncommuting variables, NCSym, having properties analogous to the classical Schur functions. This was because they had constructed a partial such set that was not a basis. We answer their question by defining Schur functions in noncommuting variables using a noncommutative analogue of the Jacobi-Trudi determinant. Our Schur functions in NCSym map to classical Schur functions under commutation, and a subset of them indexed by set partitions forms a basis for NCSym. Amongst other properties, Schur functions in NCSym also satisfy a noncommutative analogue of the product rule for classical Schur functions in terms of skew Schur functions.
We also show how Schur functions in NCSym are related to Specht modules, and naturally refine the Rosas-Sagan Schur functions. Moreover, by generalizing Rosas-Sagan Schur functions to skew Schur functions in the natural way, we prove noncommutative analogues of the Littlewood-Richardson rule and coproduct rule for them. Finally, we relate our functions to noncommutative symmetric functions by proving a subset of our functions are natural extensions of noncommutative ribbon Schur functions, and immaculate functions indexed by integer partitions.
Two formulas for plane paritions
