We study the Fadell-Husseini index of the configuration space F(R^d,n) with respect to different subgroups of the symmetric group S_n. For p prime and d>0, we completely determine Index_{Z/p}(F(R^d,p);F_p) and partially describe Index{(Z/p)^k}(F(R^d,p^k);F_p). In this process we obtain results of independent interest, including:
(1) an extended equivariant Goresky-MacPherson formula,
(2) a complete description of the top homology of the partition lattice Pi_p as an F_p[Z_p]-module, and
(3) a generalized Dold theorem for elementary abelian groups.
The results on the Fadell-Husseini index yield a new proof of the Nandakumar & Ramana Rao conjecture for a prime. For n=p^k a prime power, we compute the Lusternik-Schnirelmann category cat(F(R^d,n)/S_n)=(d-1)(n-1). Moreover, we extend coincidence results related to the Borsuk-Ulam theorem, as obtained by Cohen & Connett, Cohen & Lusk, and Karasev & Volovikov.

A poset can be regarded as a category in which there is at most one morphism between objects, and such that at most one of Hom(c,c') and Hom(c',c) is nonempty for distinct objects c,c'. If we keep in place the latter axiom but allow for more than one morphism between objects, we have a sort of generalized poset in which there are multiplicities attached to covering relations, and possibly nontrivial automorphism groups. We call such a category an "updown category". In this paper we give a precise definition of such categories and develop a theory for them. We also give a detailed account of ten examples, including updown categories of integer partitions, integer compositions, planar rooted trees, and rooted trees.

A proper merging of two disjoint quasi-ordered sets $P$ and $Q$ is a quasi-order on the union of $P$ and $Q$ such that the restriction to $P$ and $Q$ yields the original quasi-order again and such that no elements of $P$ and $Q$ are identified. In this article, we consider the cases where $P$ and $Q$ are chains, where $P$ and $Q$ are antichains, and where $P$ is an antichain and $Q$ is a chain. We give formulas that determine the number of proper mergings in all three cases, and introduce two new bijections from proper mergings of two chains to plane partitions and from proper mergings of an antichain and a chain to monotone colorings of complete bipartite digraphs. Additionally, we use these bijections to count the Galois connections between two chains, and between a chain and a Boolean lattice respectively.

Let H be a k-uniform hypergraph whose vertices are the integers 1,...,N. We say that H contains a monotone path of length n if there are x_1 < x_2 < ... < x_{n+k-1} so that H contains all n edges of the form {x_i,x_{i+1},...,x_{i+k-1}}. Let N_k(q,n) be the smallest integer N so that every q-coloring of the edges of the complete k-uniform hypergraph on N vertices contains a monochromatic monotone path of length n. While the study of N_k(q,n) for specific values of k and q goes back (implicitly) to the seminal 1935 paper of Erdos and Szekeres, the problem of bounding N_k(q,n) for arbitrary k and q was studied by Fox, Pach, Sudakov and Suk.
Our main contribution here is a novel approach for bounding the Ramsey-type numbers N_k(q,n), based on establishing a surprisingly tight connection between them and the enumerative problem of counting high-dimensional integer partitions. Some of the concrete results we obtain using this approach are the following:
1. We show that for every fixed q we have N_3(q,n)=2^{Θ(n^{q-1})}, thus resolving an open problem raised by Fox et al.
2. We show that for every k >= 3, N_k(2,n)=2^{\cdot^{\cdot^{2^{(2-o(1))n}}}} where the height of the tower is k-2, thus resolving an open problem raised by Elias and Matousek.
3. We give a new pigeonhole proof of the Erdős-Szekeres Theorem on cups-vs-caps, similar to Seidenberg's proof of the Erdos-Szekeres Lemma on increasing/decreasing subsequences.
Stirling numbers of forests and cycles

For a graph $G$ and a positive integer $k$, the {\em graphical Stirling number} $S(G,k)$ is the number of partitions of the vertex set of $G$ into $k$ non-empty independent sets. Equivalently it is the number of proper colorings of $G$ that use exactly $k$ colors, with two colorings identified if they differ only on the names of the colors. If $G$ is the empty graph on $n$ vertices then $S(G,k)$ reduces to $S(n,k)$, the familiar Stirling number of the second kind.
In this note we first consider Stirling numbers of forests. We show that if $(F^{c(n)}_n)_{n\geq 0}$ is any sequence of forests with $F^{c(n)}_n$ having $n$ vertices and $c(n)=o(\sqrt{n/\log n})$ components, and if $X^{c(n)}_n$ is a random variable that takes value $k$ with probability proportional to $S(F^{c(n)}_n,k)$ (that is, $X^{c(n)}_n$ is the number of classes in a uniformly chosen partition of $F^{c(n)}_n$ into non-empty independent sets), then $X^{c(n)}_n$ is asymptotically normal, meaning that suitably normalized it tends in distribution to the standard normal. This generalizes a seminal result of Harper on the ordinary Stirling numbers. Along the way we give recurrences for calculating the generating functions of the sequences $(S(F^c_n,k))_{k \geq 0}$, show that these functions have all real zeroes, and exhibit three different interlacing patterns between the zeroes of pairs of consecutive generating functions.
We next consider Stirling numbers of cycles. We establish asymptotic normality for the number of classes in a uniformly chosen partition of $C_n$ (the cycle on $n$ vertices) into non-empty independent sets. We give a recurrence for calculating the generating function of the sequence $(S(C_n,k))_{k \geq 0}$, and use this to give a direct proof of a log-concavity result that had previously only been arrived at in a very indirect way.
On weighted graph homomorphisms
For given graphs $G$ and $H$, let $|Hom(G,H)|$ denote the set of graph homomorphisms from $G$ to $H$. We show that for any finite, $n$-regular, bipartite graph $G$ and any finite graph $H$ (perhaps with loops), $|Hom(G,H)|$ is maximum when $G$ is a disjoint union of $K_{n,n}$'s. This generalizes a result of J. Kahn on the number of independent sets in a regular bipartite graph. We also give the asymptotics of the logarithm of $|Hom(G,H)|$ in terms of a simply expressed parameter of $H$.
We also consider weighted versions of these results which may be viewed as statements about the partition functions of certain models of physical systems with hard constraints.
Bounding the partition function of spin-systems
With a graph $G=(V,E)$ we associate a collection of non-negative real weights $\cup_{v\in V}{λ_{i,v}:1\leq i \leq m} \cup \cup_{uv \in E} {λ_{ij,uv}:1\leq i \leq j \leq m}$. We consider the probability distribution on ${f:V\rightarrow{1,...,m}}$ in which each $f$ occurs with probability proportional to $\prod_{v \in V}λ_{f(v),v}\prod_{uv \in E}λ_{f(u)f(v),uv}$. Many well-known statistical physics models, including the Ising model with an external field and the hard-core model with non-uniform activities, can be framed as such a distribution. We obtain an upper bound, independent of $G$, for the partition function (the normalizing constant which turns the assignment of weights on $\{f:V\rightarrow{1,...,m\}}$ into a probability distribution) in the case when $G$ is a regular bipartite graph. This generalizes a bound obtained by Galvin and Tetali who considered the simpler weight collection $\{λ_i:1 \leq i \leq m\} \cup \{λ_{ij}:1 \leq i \leq j \leq m\}$ with each $λ_{ij}$ either 0 or 1 and with each $f$ chosen with probability proportional to $\prod_{v \in V}λ_{f(v)}\prod_{uv \in E}λ_{f(u)f(v)}$. Our main tools are a generalization to list homomorphisms of a result of Galvin and Tetali on graph homomorphisms and a straightforward second-moment computation.
Two problems on independent sets in graphs

Let $i_t(G)$ denote the number of independent sets of size $t$ in a graph $G$. Levit and Mandrescu have conjectured that for all bipartite $G$ the sequence $(i_t(G))_{t \geq 0}$ (the {\em independent set sequence} of $G$) is unimodal. We provide evidence for this conjecture by showing that is true for almost all equibipartite graphs. Specifically, we consider the random equibipartite graph $G(n,n,p)$, and show that for any fixed $p\in(0,1]$ its independent set sequence is almost surely unimodal, and moreover almost surely log-concave except perhaps for a vanishingly small initial segment of the sequence. We obtain similar results for $p=\tildeΩ(n^{-1/2})$.
We also consider the problem of estimating $i(G)=\sum_{t \geq 0} i_t(G)$ for $G$ in various families. We give a sharp upper bound on the number of independent sets in an $n$-vertex graph with minimum degree $δ$, for all fixed $δ$ and sufficiently large $n$. Specifically, we show that the maximum is achieved uniquely by $K_{δ, n-δ}$, the complete bipartite graph with $δ$ vertices in one partition class and $n-δ$ in the other.
We also present a weighted generalization: for all fixed $x>0$ and $δ>0$, as long as $n=n(x,δ)$ is large enough, if $G$ is a graph on $n$ vertices with minimum degree $δ$ then $\sum_{t \geq 0} i_t(G)x^t \leq \sum_{t \geq 0} i_t(K_{δ, n-δ})x^t$ with equality if and only if $G=K_{δ, n-δ}$.
Matchings and Independent Sets of a Fixed Size in Regular Graphs
We use an entropy based method to study two graph maximization problems. We upper bound the number of matchings of fixed size $\ell$ in a $d$-regular graph on $N$ vertices. For $\frac{2\ell}{N}$ bounded away from 0 and 1, the logarithm of the bound we obtain agrees in its leading term with the logarithm of the number of matchings of size $\ell$ in the graph consisting of $\frac{N}{2d}$ disjoint copies of the complete bipartite graph $K_{d,d}$. This provides asymptotic evidence for a conjecture of S. Friedland {\it et al.}.
We also obtain an analogous result for independent sets of a fixed size in regular graphs, giving asymptotic evidence for a conjecture of J. Kahn. Our bounds on the number of matchings and independent sets of a fixed size are derived from bounds on the partition function (or generating polynomial) for matchings and independent sets.
Compositions of Integers With Bounded Parts
In this note, we consider ordered partitions of integers such that each entry is no more than a fixed portion of the sum. We give a method for constructing all such compositions as well as both an explicit formula and a generating function describing the number of $k$-tuples whose entries are bounded in this way and sum to a fixed value $g$.

We show that a recent identity of Beck-Gessel-Lee-Savage on the generating function of symmetrically contrained compositions of integers generalizes naturally to a family of convex polyhedral cones that are invariant under the action of a finite reflection group. We obtain general expressions for the multivariate generating functions of such cones, and work out the specific cases of a symmetry group of type A (previously known) and types B and D (new). We obtain several applications of the special cases in type B, including identities involving permutation statistics and lecture hall partitions.

Distance-based methods such as UPGMA (Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean) continue to play a significant role in phylogenetic research. We use polyhedral combinatorics to analyze the natural subdivision of the positive orthant induced by classifying the input vectors according to tree topologies returned by the algorithm. The partition lattice informs the study of UPGMA trees. We give a closed form for the extreme rays of UPGMA cones on n taxa, and compute the normalized volumes of the UPGMA cones for small n.

Counting Dyck paths by area and rank

The set of Dyck paths of length $2n$ inherits a lattice structure from a bijection with the set of noncrossing partitions with the usual partial order. In this paper, we study the joint distribution of two statistics for Dyck paths: \emph{area} (the area under the path) and \emph{rank} (the rank in the lattice).
While area for Dyck paths has been studied, pairing it with this rank function seems new, and we get an interesting $(q,t)$-refinement of the Catalan numbers. We present two decompositions of the corresponding generating function: one refines an identity of Carlitz and Riordan; the other refines the notion of $γ$-nonnegativity, and is based on a decomposition of the lattice of noncrossing partitions due to Simion and Ullman.
Further, Biane's correspondence and a result of Stump allow us to conclude that the joint distribution of area and rank for Dyck paths equals the joint distribution of length and reflection length for the permutations lying below the $n$-cycle $(12...n)$ in the absolute order on the symmetric group.

Eigenvalue interlacing is a versatile technique for deriving results in algebraic combinatorics. In particular, it has been successfully used for proving a number of results about the relation between the (adjacency matrix or Laplacian) spectrum of a graph and some of its properties. For instance, some characterizations of regular partitions, and bounds for some parameters, such as the independence and chromatic numbers, the diameter, the bandwidth, etc., have been obtained. For each parameter of a graph involving the cardinality of some vertex sets, we can define its corresponding weight parameter by giving some "weights" (that is, the entries of the positive eigenvector) to the vertices and replacing cardinalities by square norms. The key point is that such weights "regularize" the graph, and hence allow us to define a kind of regular partition, called "pseudo-regular," intended for general graphs. Here we show how to use interlacing for proving results about some weight parameters and pseudo-regular partitions of a graph. For instance, generalizing a well-known result of Lovász, it is shown that the weight Shannon capacity $Θ^*$ of a connected graph $\G$, with $n$ vertices and (adjacency matrix) eigenvalues $λ_1>λ_2\ge\...\ge λ_n$, satisfies $$ Θ\le Θ^* \le \frac{\|\vecnu\|^2}{1-\frac{λ_1}{λ_n}} $$ where $Θ$ is the (standard) Shannon capacity and $\vecnu$ is the positive eigenvector normalized to have smallest entry 1. In the special case of regular graphs, the results obtained have some interesting corollaries, such as an upper bound for some of the multiplicities of the eigenvalues of a distance-regular graph. Finally, some results involving the Laplacian spectrum are derived. spectrum are derived.
On the Quiver Presentation of the Descent Algebra of the Symmetric Group

We describe a presentation for the descent algebra of the symmetric group $\sym{n}$ as a quiver with relations. This presentation arises from a new construction of the descent algebra as a homomorphic image of an algebra of forests of binary trees which can be identified with a subspace of the free Lie algebra. In this setting, we provide a new short proof of the known fact that the quiver of the descent algebra of $\sym{n}$ is given by restricted partition refinement. Moreover, we describe certain families of relations and conjecture that for fixed $n\in\mathbb{N}$, the finite set of relations from these families that are relevant for the descent algebra of $\sym{n}$ generates the ideal of relations, and hence yields an explicit presentation by generators and relations of the algebra.
The probability of generating the symmetric group with a commutator condition
Let B(n) be the set of pairs of permutations from the symmetric group of degree n with a 3-cycle commutator, and let A(n) be the set of those pairs which generate the symmetric or the alternating group of degree n. We find effective formulas for calculating the cardinalities of both sets. More precisely, we show that #B(n)/n! is a discrete convolution of the partition function and a linear combination of divisor functions, while #A(n)/n! is the product of a polynomial and Jordan's totient function. In particular, it follows that the probability that a pair of random permutations with a 3-cycle commutator generates the symmetric or the alternating group of degree n tends to zero as n tends to infinity, which makes a contrast with Dixon's classical result.
Key elements of our proofs are Jordan's theorem from the 19th century, a formula by Ramanujan from the 20th century and a technique of square-tiled surfaces developed by French mathematicians Lelievre and Royer in the beginning of the 21st century. This paper uses and highlights elegant connections between algebra, geometry, and number theory.

Let $g$ be a simple Lie algebra and $Ab$ the poset of non-trivial abelian ideals of a fixed Borel subalgebra of $g$. In 2003 (IMRN, no.35, 1889--1913), we constructed a partition of $Ab$ into the subposets $Ab_μ$, parameterised by the long positive roots of $g$, and established some properties of these subposets. In this note, we show that this partition is compatible with intersections, relate it to the Kostant-Peterson parameterisation of abelian ideals and to the centralisers of abelian ideals. We also prove that the poset of positive roots of $g$ is a join-semilattice.
A new class of Ramsey-classification theorems and their applications in the Tukey theory of ultrafilters

Motivated by Tukey classification problems and building on work in \cite{Dobrinen/Todorcevic11}, we develop a new hierarchy of topological Ramsey spaces $\mathcal{R}_α$, $α<ω_1$. These spaces form a natural hierarchy of complexity, $\mathcal{R}_0$ being the Ellentuck space, and for each $α<ω_1$, $\mathcal{R}_{α+1}$ coming immediately after $\mathcal{R}_α$ in complexity. Associated with each $\mathcal{R}_α$ is an ultrafilter $\mathcal{U}_α$, which is Ramsey for $\mathcal{R}_α$, and in particular, is a rapid p-point satisfying certain partition properties. We prove Ramsey-classification theorems for equivalence relations on fronts on $\mathcal{R}_α$, $2\leα<ω_1$. These are analogous to the Pudlak-\Rodl\ Theorem canonizing equivalence relations on barriers on the Ellentuck space. We then apply our Ramsey-classification theorems to completely classify all Rudin-Keisler equivalence classes of ultrafilters which are Tukey reducible to $\mathcal{U}_α$, for each $2\leα<ω_1$: Every ultrafilter which is Tukey reducible to $\mathcal{U}_α$ is isomorphic to a countable iteration of Fubini products of ultrafilters from among a fixed countable collection of rapid p-points. Moreover, we show that the Tukey types of nonprincipal ultrafilters Tukey reducible to $\mathcal{U}_α$ form a descending chain of order type $α+1$.

For any irreducible real reflection group $W$ with Coxeter number $h$, Armstrong, Reiner, and the author introduced a pair of $W \times \ZZ_h$-modules which deserve to be called {\sf $W$-parking spaces} which generalize the type A notion of parking functions and conjectured a relationship between them. In this paper we give a Fuss analog of their constructions.
For a Fuss parameter $k \geq 1$, we define a pair of $W \times \ZZ_{kh}$-modules which deserve to be called {\sf $k$-$W$-parking spaces} and conjecture a relationship between them. We prove the weakest version of our conjectures for each of the infinite families ABCDI of finite reflection groups, together with proofs of stronger versions in special cases. Whenever our weakest conjecture holds for $W$, we have the following corollaries. First, there is a simple formula for the character of either $k$-$W$-parking space. Second, we recover a cyclic sieving result due to Krattenthaler and Müller which gives the cycle structure of a generalized rotation action on $k$-$W$-noncrossing partitions. Finally, when $W$ is crystallographic, the restriction of either $k$-$W$-parking space to $W$ isomorphic to the action of $W$ on the finite torus $Q / (kh+1)Q$, where $Q$ is the root lattice.

Two new expansions for partial sums of Gauss' triangular and square numbers series are given. As a consequence, we derive a family of inequalities for the overpartition function $\bar{p}(n)$ and for the partition function $p_1(n)$ counting the partitions of $n$ with distinct odd parts. Some further inequalities for variations of partition function are proposed as conjectures.
