We study some measure partition problems: Cut the same positive fraction of $d+1$ measures in $\mathbb R^d$ with a hyperplane or find a convex subset of $\mathbb R^d$ on which $d+1$ given measures have the same prescribed value. For both problems positive answers are given under some additional assumptions.

Chen, Deng, Du, Stanley, and Yan introduced the notion of $k$-crossings and $k$-nestings for set partitions, and proved that the sizes of the largest $k$-crossings and $k$-nestings in the partitions of an $n$-set possess a symmetric joint distribution. This work considers a generalization of these results to set partitions whose arcs are labeled by an $r$-element set (which we call \emph{$r$-colored set partitions}). In this context, a $k$-crossing or $k$-nesting is a sequence of arcs, all with the same color, which form a $k$-crossing or $k$-nesting in the usual sense. After showing that the sizes of the largest crossings and nestings in colored set partitions likewise have a symmetric joint distribution, we consider several related enumeration problems. We prove that $r$-colored set partitions with no crossing arcs of the same color are in bijection with certain paths in $\NN^r$, generalizing the correspondence between noncrossing (uncolored) set partitions and 2-Motzkin paths. Combining this with recent work of Bousquet-Mélou and Mishna affords a proof that the sequence counting noncrossing 2-colored set partitions is P-recursive. We also discuss how our methods extend to several variations of colored set partitions with analogous notions of crossings and nestings.
Universal Cycles for Weak Orders

Universal cycles are generalizations of de Bruijn cycles and Gray codes that were introduced originally by Chung, Diaconis, and Graham in 1990. They have been developed by many authors since, for various combinatorial objects such as strings, subsets, permutations, partitions, vector spaces, and designs. One generalization of universal cycles, which require almost complete overlap of consecutive words, is s-overlap cycles, which relax such a constraint. In this paper we study weak orders, which are relations that are transitive and complete. We prove the existence of universal and s-overlap cycles for weak orders, as well as for fixed height and/or weight weak orders, and apply the results to cycles for ordered partitions as well.
Developments from Programming the Partition Method for a Power Series Expansion

Recently, a novel method based on coding partitions [1]-[4] has been used to derive power series expansions to previously intractable problems. In this method the coefficients at $k$ are determined by summing the contributions made by each partition whose elements sum to $k$. These contributions are found by assigning values to each element and multiplying by an appropriate multinomial factor. This work presents a theoretical framework for the partition method for a power series expansion. To overcome the complexity due to the contributions, a programming methodology is created allowing more general problems to be studied than envisaged originally. The methodology uses the bi-variate recursive central partition (BRCP) algorithm, which is based on a tree-diagram approach to scanning partitions. Its main advantage is that partitions are generated in the multiplicity representation. During the development of the theoretical framework, scanning over partitions was seen as a discrete operation with an operator $L_{P,k}[ \cdot]$, whose summand depends on the coefficients of the two series when the original function is written as a pseudo-composite function. Simple modifications result in programs for other operators of specific types of partitions such as: (1) only odd or even elements, (2) a fixed number of elements, (3) discrete elements, (4) specific elements and (5) those restricted by element size. Another modification generates conjugate partitions by transposing Ferrers diagrams. The operator approach is then applied to the generating functions for both discrete and standard partitions. The main generalisation introduces a parameter $ω$, whose powers give the number of elements in the partitions while the coefficients become polynomials in $ω$. Finally, power series expansions for more advanced infinite products are derived, culminating in Heine's multi-parameter product.

We introduce and study the notion of k-divisible elements in a non-commutative probability space. A k-divisible element is a (non-commutative) random variable whose n-th moment vanishes whenever n is not a multiple of k. First, we consider the combinatorial convolution \ast in the lattices NC of non-crossing partitions and NC^k of k-divisible non-crossing partitions and show that convolving k times with the zeta-function in NC is equivalent to convolving once with the zeta-function in NC^k. Furthermore, when x is k-divisible, we derive a formula for the free cumulants of x^k in terms of the free cumulants of x, involving k-divisible non-crossing partitions. Second, we prove that if a and s are free and s is k-divisible then sps and a are free, whenever p is any polynomial (on a and s) of degree k - 2 on s. Moreover, we define a notion of R-diagonal k-tuples and prove similar results. Next, we show that free multiplicative convolution between a measure concentrated in the positive real line and a probability measure with k-symmetry is well defined. Analytic tools to calculate this convolution are developed. Finally, we concentrate on free additive powers of k-symmetric distributions and prove that μt is a well defined probability measure, for all t > 1. We derive central limit theorems and Poisson type ones. More generally, we consider freely infinitely divisible measures and prove that free infinite divisibility is maintained under the mapping μ\rightarrow μ^k . We conclude by focusing on (k-symmetric) free stable distributions, for which we prove a reproducing property generalizing the ones known for one sided and real symmetric free stable laws.

For $k\geq i\geq 1$, let $B_{k,i}(n)$ denote the number of partitions of $n$ such that part 1 appears at most $i-1$ times, two consecutive integers l and $l+1$ appear at most $k-1$ times and if l and $l+1$ appear exactly $k-1$ times then the total sum of the parts l and $l+1$ is congruent to $i-1$ modulo 2. Let $A_{k,i}(n)$ denote the number of partitions with parts not congruent to $i$, $2k-i$ and $2k$ modulo $2k$. Bressoud's theorem states that $A_{k,i}(n)=B_{k,i}(n)$. Corteel, Lovejoy, and Mallet found an overpartition analogue of Bressoud's theorem for $i=1$, that is, for partitions not containing nonoverlined part 1. We obtain an overpartition analogue of Bressoud's theorem in the general case. For $k\geq i\geq 1$, let $D_{k,i}(n)$ denote the number of overpartitions of $n$ such that the nonoverlined part 1 appears at most $i-1$ times, for any integer $l$, $l$ and nonoverlined $l+1$ appear at most $k-1$ times and if the parts $l$ and the nonoverlined part $l+1$ appear exactly $k-1$ times then the total sum of the parts $l$ and nonoverlined part $l+1$ is congruent to the number of overlined parts that are less than $l+1$ plus $i-1$ modulo 2. Let $C_{k,i}(n)$ denote the number of overpartitions with the nonoverlined parts not congruent to $\pm i$ and $2k-1$ modulo $2k-1$. We show that $C_{k,i}(n)=D_{k,i}(n)$. This relation can also be considered as a Rogers-Ramanujan-Gordon type theorem for overpartitions.

We show the existence of a series of transforms that capture several structures that underlie higher-dimensional partitions. These transforms lead to a sequence of triangles whose entries are given combinatorial interpretations as the number of particular types of skew Ferrers diagrams. The end result of our analysis is the existence of a triangle, that we denote by F, which implies that the data needed to compute the number of partitions of a given positive integer is reduced by a factor of half. The number of spanning rooted forests appears intriguingly in a family of entries in the triangle F. Using modifications of an algorithm due to Bratley-McKay, we are able to directly enumerate entries in some of the triangles. As a result, we have been able to compute numbers of partitions of positive integers <= 25 in any dimension.
Homogeneous Edge-Colorings of Graphs
Let G = (V, E) be a multigraph without loops and for any x {\in}V let E(x) be the set of edges of G incident to x. A homogeneous edge-coloring of G is an assignment of an integer m >= 2 and a coloring c:E {\to} S of the edges of Gsuchthat|S| = mandforanyx{\in}V,if|E(x)| = mqx+rx with0 <= rx <m, there exists a partition of E(x) in rx color classes of cardinality qx + 1 and other m-rx color classes of cardinality qx. The homogeneous chromatic index \c{hi}(G) is the least m for which there exists such a coloring. We determine \c{hi}(G) in the case that G is a complete multigraph, a tree or a complete bipartite multigraph.
Avoiding colored partitions of two elements in the pattern sense
Enumeration of pattern-avoiding objects is an active area of study with connections to such disparate regions of mathematics as Schubert varieties and stack-sortable sequences. Recent research in this area has brought attention to colored permutations and colored set partitions. A colored partition of a set $S$ is a partition of $S$ with each element receiving a color from the set $[k]=\{1,2,...,k\}$. Let $Π_n\wr C_k$ be the set of partitions of $[n]$ with colors from $[k]$.
In an earlier work, the authors study pattern avoidance in colored set partitions in the equality sense. Here we study pattern avoidance in colored partitions in the pattern sense. We say that $σ\inΠ_n\wr C_k$ contains $π\in Π_m\wr C_\ell$ in the pattern sense if $σ$ contains a copy $π$ when the colors are ignored and the colors on this copy of $π$ are order isomorphic to the colors on $π$. Otherwise we say that $σ$ avoids $π$.
We focus on patterns from $Π_2\wr C_2$ and find that many familiar and some new integer sequences appear. We provide bijective proofs wherever possible, and we provide formulas for computing those sequences that are new.
Multiply-refined enumeration of alternating sign matrices

Four natural boundary statistics and two natural bulk statistics are considered for alternating sign matrices (ASMs). Specifically, these statistics are the positions of the 1's in the first and last rows and columns of an ASM, and the numbers of generalized inversions and -1's in an ASM. Previously-known and related results for the exact enumeration of ASMs with prescribed values of some of these statistics are discussed in detail. A quadratic relation which recursively determines the generating function associated with all six statistics is then obtained. This relation also leads to various new identities satisfied by generating functions associated with fewer than six of the statistics. The derivation of the relation involves combining the Desnanot-Jacobi determinant identity with the Izergin-Korepin formula for the partition function of the six-vertex model with domain-wall boundary conditions.

Wilf's Sixth Unsolved Problem asks for any interesting properties of the set of partitions of integers for which the (nonzero) multiplicities of the parts are all different. We refer to these as \emph{Wilf partitions}. Using $f(n)$ to denote the number of Wilf partitions, we establish lead-order asymptotics for $\ln{f(n)}$.
Constructing subset partition graphs with strong adjacency and end-point count properties
Kim defined a very general combinatorial abstraction of the diameter of polytopes called subset partition graphs to study how certain combinatorial properties of such graphs may be achieved in lower bound constructions. Using Lovász' Local Lemma, we give a general randomized construction for subset partition graphs satisfying strong adjacency and end-point count properties. This can be used as a building block to conceptually simplify the constructions given in [Kim11].
We also use our method to construct abstract spindles, an analogy to the spindles used by Santos to disprove the Hirsch conjecture, of exponential length which satisfy the adjacency and end-point count properties.

We build, from the collection of all groups of unitriangular matrices, Hopf monoids in Joyal's category of species. Such structure is carried by the collection of class function spaces on those groups, and also by the collection of superclass function spaces, in the sense of Diaconis and Isaacs. Superclasses of unitriangular matrices admit a simple description from which we deduce a combinatorial model for the Hopf monoid of superclass functions, in terms of the Hadamard product of the Hopf monoids of linear orders and of set partitions. This implies a recent result relating the Hopf algebra of superclass functions on unitriangular matrices to symmetric functions in noncommuting variables. We determine the algebraic structure of the Hopf monoid: it is a free monoid in species, with the canonical Hopf structure. As an application, we derive certain estimates on the number of conjugacy classes of unitriangular matrices.

Under general conditions, the equation $g(x^1, ..., x^q, y) = 0$ implicitly defines $y$ locally as a function of $x^1, ..., x^q$. In this article, we express divided differences of $y$ in terms of divided differences of $g$, generalizing a recent formula for the case where $y$ is univariate. The formula involves a sum over a combinatorial structure whose elements can be viewed either as polygonal partitions or as plane trees. Through this connection we prove as a corollary a formula for derivatives of $y$ in terms of derivatives of $g$.
The Bethe Partition Function of Log-supermodular Graphical Models
Sudderth, Wainwright, and Willsky have conjectured that the Bethe approximation corresponding to any fixed point of the belief propagation algorithm over an attractive, pairwise binary graphical model provides a lower bound on the true partition function. In this work, we resolve this conjecture in the affirmative by demonstrating that, for any graphical model with binary variables whose potential functions (not necessarily pairwise) are all log-supermodular, the Bethe partition function always lower bounds the true partition function. The proof of this result follows from a new variant of the "four functions" theorem that may be of independent interest.

Let $B$ be an $n \times n$ nilpotent matrix with entries in an infinite field $\k$. Assume that $B$ is in Jordan canonical form with the associated Jordan block partition $P$. In this paper, we study a poset $\mathcal{D}_P$ associated to the nilpotent commutator of $B$ and a certain partition of $n$, denoted by $λ_U(P)$, defined in terms of the lengths of unions of special chains in $\mathcal{D}_P$. Polona Oblak associated to a given partition $P$ another partition $Ob(P)$ resulting from a recursive process. She conjectured that $Ob(P)$ is the same as the Jordan partition $Q(P)$ of a generic element of the nilpotent commutator of $B$. Roberta Basili, Anthony Iarrobino and the author later generalized the process introduced by Oblak. In this paper we show that all such processes result in the partition $λ_U(P)$.
More on the O(n) model on random maps via nested loops: loops with bending energy

We continue our investigation of the nested loop approach to the O(n) model on random maps, by extending it to the case where loops may visit faces of arbitrary degree. This allows to express the partition function of the O(n) loop model as a specialization of the multivariate generating function of maps with controlled face degrees, where the face weights are determined by a fixed point condition. We deduce a functional equation for the resolvent of the model, involving some ring generating function describing the immediate vicinity of the loops. When the ring generating function has a single pole, the model is amenable to a full solution. Physically, such situation is realized upon considering loops visiting triangles only and further weighting these loops by some local bending energy. Our model interpolates between the two previously solved cases of triangulations without bending energy and quadrangulations with rigid loops. We analyze the phase diagram of our model in details and derive in particular the location of its non-generic critical points, which are in the universality classes of the dense and dilute O(n) model coupled to 2D quantum gravity. Similar techniques are also used to solve a twisting loop model on quadrangulations where loops are forced to make turns within each visited square. Along the way, we revisit the problem of maps with controlled, possibly unbounded, face degrees and give combinatorial derivations of the one-cut lemma and of the functional equation for the resolvent.
A refinement of the Cameron-Erdős Conjecture

In this paper we study sum-free subsets of the set $\{1,...,n\}$, that is, subsets of the first $n$ positive integers which contain no solution to the equation $x + y = z$. Cameron and Erdős conjectured in 1990 that the number of such sets is $O(2^{n/2})$. This conjecture was confirmed by Green and, independently, by Sapozhenko. Here we prove a refined version of their theorem, by showing that the number of sum-free subsets of $[n]$ of size $m$ is $2^{O(n/m)} {\lceil n/2 \rceil \choose m}$, for every $1 \le m \le \lceil n/2 \rceil$. For $m \ge \sqrt{n}$, this result is sharp up to the constant implicit in the $O(\cdot)$. Our proof uses a general bound on the number of independent sets of size $m$ in 3-uniform hypergraphs, proved recently by the authors, and new bounds on the number of integer partitions with small sumset.
Asymptotics of Random Lozenge Tilings via Gelfand-Tsetlin Schemes

A Gelfand-Tsetlin scheme of depth N is a triangular array with m integers at level m, m=1,...,N, subject to certain interlacing constraints. We study the ensemble of uniformly random Gelfand-Tsetlin schemes with arbitrary fixed N-th row. We obtain an explicit double contour integral expression for the determinantal correlation kernel of this ensemble (and also of its q-deformation).
This provides new tools for asymptotic analysis of uniformly random lozenge tilings of polygons on the triangular lattice; or, equivalently, of random stepped surfaces. We work with a class of polygons which allows arbitrarily large number of sides. We show that the local limit behavior of random tilings (as all dimensions of the polygon grow) is directed by ergodic translation invariant Gibbs measures. The slopes of these measures coincide with the ones of tangent planes to the corresponding limit shapes described by Kenyon and Okounkov in arXiv:math-ph/0507007. We also prove that at the edge of the limit shape, the asymptotic behavior of random tilings is given by the Airy process.
In particular, our results cover the most investigated case of random boxed plane partitions (when the polygon is a hexagon).

Let V be an n-dimensional vector space and let On be the orthogonal group. Motivated by a question of B. Szegedy (B. Szegedy, Edge coloring models and reflection positivity, Journal of the American Mathematical Society Volume 20, Number 4, 2007), about the rank of edge connection matrices of partition functions of vertex models, we give a combinatorial parameterization of tensors in V \otimes k invariant under certain subgroups of the orthogonal group. This allows us to give an answer to this question for vertex models with values in an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero.
