In this paper we find exact formulas for the numbers of partitions and compositions of an element into $m$ parts over a finite field, i.e. we find the number of nonzero solutions of the equation $x_1+x_2+...+x_m=z$ over a finite field when the order does not matter and when it does, respectively. We also give an application of our results in the study of polynomials of prescribed ranges over finite fields.
A Partially Ordered Structure and a Generalization of the Canonical Partition for General Graphs with Perfect Matchings

This paper is concerned with structures of general graphs with perfect matchings. We first reveal a partially ordered structure among factor-components of general graphs with perfect matchings. Our second result is a generalization of Kotzig's canonical partition to a decomposition of general graphs with perfect matchings. It contains a short proof for the theorem of the canonical partition. These results give decompositions which are canonical, that is, unique to given graphs. We also show that there are correlations between these two and that these can be computed in polynomial time.

We give an easy diagrammatical description of the parabolic Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for the Weyl group $W_n$ of type $D_n$ with parabolic subgroup of type $A_n$ and consequently an explicit counting formula for the dimension of the morphism spaces between indecomposable projective objects in the corresponding category $Ø_0^\p$. As a byproduct we categorify irreducible $W_n$-modules corresponding to pairs of one-line partitions. Finally we indicate the motivation for introducing the combinatorics by connections to Springer theory, the category of perverse sheaves on isotropic Grassmannians and to Brauer algebras which will be treated in \cite{ES}.
Polytropes and Tropical Eigenspaces: Cones of Linearity

The map which takes a square matrix $A$ to its polytrope is piecewise linear. We show that cones of linearity of this map form a polytopal fan partition of $\{R}^{n \times n}$, whose face lattice is anti-isomorphic to the lattice of complete set of connected relations. This fan refines the non-fan partition of $\R^{n \times n}$ corresponding to cones of linearity of the eigenvector map. Our results answer open questions in a previous work with Sturmfels and lead to a new combinatorial classification of polytropes and tropical eigenspaces.

Let $G$ be a graph on $n$ vertices. We call a subset $A$ of the vertex set $V(G)$ \emph{$k$-small} if, for every vertex $v \in A$, $°(v) \le n - |A| + k$. A subset $B \subseteq V(G)$ is called \emph{$k$-large} if, for every vertex $u \in B$, $°(u) \ge |B| - k - 1$. Moreover, we denote by $\varphi_k(G)$ the minimum integer $t$ such that there is a partition of $V(G)$ into $t$ $k$-small sets, and by $Ω_k(G)$ the minimum integer $t$ such that there is a partition of $V(G)$ into $t$ $k$-large sets. In this paper, we will show tight connections between $k$-small sets, respectively $k$-large sets, and the $k$-independence number, the clique number and the chromatic number of a graph. We shall develop greedy algorithms to compute in linear time both $\varphi_k(G)$ and $Ω_k(G)$ and prove various sharp inequalities concerning these parameters, which we will use to obtain refinements of the Caro-Wei Theorem, the Turán Theorem and the Hansen-Zheng Theorem among other things.
Note on a partition limit theorem for rank and crank

If L is a partition of n, the rank of L is the size of the largest part minus the number of parts. Under the uniform distribution on partitions, Bringmann, Mahlburg, and Rhoades showed that the rank statistic has a limiting distribution. We identify the limit as the difference between two independent extreme value distributions and as the distribution of B(T) where B(t) is standard Brownian motion and T is the first time that an independent three-dimensional Brownian motion hits the unit sphere. The same limit holds for the crank.

A graph $\Ga$ is $G$-symmetric if $\Ga$ admits $G$ as a group of automorphisms acting transitively on the set of vertices and the set of arcs of $\Ga$, where an arc is an ordered pair of adjacent vertices. In the case when $G$ is imprimitive on $V(\Ga)$, namely when $V(\Ga)$ admits a nontrivial $G$-invariant partition $\BB$, the quotient graph $\Ga_{\BB}$ of $\Ga$ with respect to $\BB$ is always $G$-symmetric and sometimes even $(G, 2)$-arc transitive. (A $G$-symmetric graph is $(G, 2)$-arc transitive if $G$ is transitive on the set of oriented paths of length two.) In this paper we obtain necessary conditions for $\Ga_{\BB}$ to be $(G, 2)$-arc transitive (regardless of whether $\Ga$ is $(G, 2)$-arc transitive) in the case when $v-k$ is an odd prime $p$, where $v$ is the block size of $\BB$ and $k$ is the number of vertices in a block having neighbours in a fixed adjacent block. These conditions are given in terms of $v, k$ and two other parameters with respect to $(\Ga, \BB)$ together with a certain 2-point transitive block design induced by $(\Ga, \BB)$. We prove further that if $p=3$ or $5$ then these necessary conditions are essentially sufficient for $\Ga_{\BB}$ to be $(G, 2)$-arc transitive.
Automorphisms of circulants that respect partitions

In this paper, we begin by partitioning the edges (or arcs) of a circulant (di)graph according to which generator in the connection set leads to each edge. We then further refine the partition by subdividing any part that corresponds to an element of order less than $n$, according to which of the cycles generated by that element the edge is in. It is known that if the (di)graph is connected and has no multiple edges, then any automorphism that respects the first partition and fixes the vertex corresponding to the group identity must be an automorphism of the group (this is in fact true in the more general context of Cayley graphs). We show that automorphisms that respect the second partition and fix 0 must also respect the first partition, so are again precisely the group automorphisms of $\mathbb Z_n$.
The number of multinomial coefficients based on a set of partitions of n into k parts and divided by k evenly
In this paper we obtained an original integer sequence based on the properties of the multinomial coefficient. We investigated a property of the sequence that shows connection with a primality testing. For any prime n the n-th term in the sequence is less by 1 than the number of partitions of n. We hypothesize the existence of an asymptotic algorithm of primality testing.
Moments of Poisson stochastic integrals with random integrands
We compute the moment of order n of the Poisson stochastic integral of a random process u over a metric space X as a sum that runs over all partitions of {1,...,n} and involves the addition of points to Poisson configurations. This formula recovers known results in case u is a deterministic function on X.
Enumeration of Cylindric Plane Partitions - part I

Cylindric plane partitions may be thought of as a natural generalization of reverse plane partitions. A generating series for the enumeration of cylindric plane partitions was recently given by Borodin. The first result of this paper is a $(q,t)$-analog of Borodin's identity which extends previous work by Okada in the reverse plane partition case. Our proof uses commutation relations for $(q,t)$-vertex operators acting on Macdonald polynomials as given by Garsia, Haiman and Tesla. The second result of this paper is an explicit combinatorial interpreation of the $(q,t)$-Macdonald weight in terms of a non-intersecting lattice path model on the cylinder.

It is well-known that a nilpotent n by n matrix B is determined up to conjugacy by a partition of n formed by the sizes of the Jordan blocks of B. We call this partition the Jordan type of B. We obtain partial results on the following problem: for any partition P of n describe the type Q(P) of a generic nilpotent matrix commuting with a given nilpotent matrix of type P. A conjectural description for Q(P) was given by P. Oblak and restated by L. Khatami. In this paper we prove "half" of this conjecture by showing that this conjectural type is less than or equal to Q(P) in the dominance order on partitions.
Quantum cohomology via vicious and osculating walkers

We relate the counting of rational curves intersecting Schubert varieties of the Grassmannian to the counting of certain non-intersecting lattice paths on the cylinder, so-called vicious and osculating walkers. These lattice paths form exactly solvable statistical mechanics models and are obtained from solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation. The eigenvectors of the transfer matrices of these models yield the idempotents of the Verlinde algebra of the gauged u(n)-WZNW model. The latter is known to be closely related to the small quantum cohomology ring of the Grassmannian. We establish further that the partition functions of the vicious and osculating walker model are given in terms of Postnikov's toric Schur functions and can be interpreted as generating functions for Gromov-Witten invariants.

We give a new proof of a determinant evaluation due to Andrews, which has been used to enumerate cyclically symmetric and descending plane partitions. We also prove some related results, including a q-analogue of Andrews's determinant.
Deciding Positivity of Littlewood-Richardson Coefficients
Starting with Knutson and Tao's hive model (in J. Amer. Math. Soc., 1999) we characterize the Littlewood-Richardson coefficient $c_{λ,μ}^ν$ of given partitions $λ,μ,ν\in N^n$ as the number of capacity achieving hive flows on the honeycomb graph. Based on this, we design a polynomial time algorithm for deciding $c_{λ,μ}^ν>0$. This algorithm is easy to state and takes $O(n^3 \log ν_1)$ arithmetic operations and comparisons. We further show that the capacity achieving hive flows can be seen as the vertices of a connected graph, which leads to new structural insights into Littlewood-Richardson coefficients.

We study the unique maximal decomposition of an arbitrary affine permutation into a product of cyclically decreasing elements, providing a new perspective on work of Thomas Lam. This decomposition is closely related to the affine code, which generalizes the $k$-bounded partition associated to Grassmannian elements. We also show that the affine code readily encodes a number of basic combinatorial properties of an affine permutation. As an application, we prove a new special case of the Littlewood-Richardson Rule for $k$-Schur functions, using the canonical decomposition to control for which permutations appear in the expansion of the $k$-Schur function in noncommuting variables over the affine nil-Coxeter algebra.
Counting Group Valued Graph Colorings
There are many variations on partition functions for graph homomorphisms or colorings. The case considered here is a counting or hard constraint problem in which the range or color graph carries a free and vertex transitive Abelian group action so that the colors are identified with the elements of this group. A Fourier transform is used to obtain an expansion for the numbers of colorings with terms indexed by isthmus free subgraphs of the domain. The terms are products of a polynomial in the edge density a of the color graph and the number of colorings of the indexing subgraph of the domain into the complementary color graph. The polynomial in a is independent of the color group and the term has order (1-a) to the r where r is the number of vertices minus the number of components in the indexing subgraph. Thus if (1-a) is small there is a main term indexed by the empty subgraph which is a polynomial in a and the first dependence on the coloring group occurs in the lowest order corrections which are indexed by the shortest cycles in the graph and are of order (1-a) to the g-1 where g is the length of these shortest cycles. The main theorem is stated as a reciprocity law. Examples are given in which the coloring groups are long cycles and products of short cycles and adjacent vertices are required to have distant rather than distinct colors. The chromatic polynomial of a graph corresponds to using any group and taking the allowed set to be the complement of the identity.
The local $h$-vector of the cluster subdivision of a simplex

The cluster complex $Δ(Φ)$ is an abstract simplicial complex, introduced by Fomin and Zelevinsky for a finite root system $Φ$. The positive part of $Δ(Φ)$ naturally defines a simplicial subdivision of the simplex on the vertex set of simple roots of $Φ$. The local $h$-vector of this subdivision, in the sense of Stanley, is computed and the corresponding $γ$-vector is shown to be nonnegative. Combinatorial interpretations to the entries of the local $h$-vector and the corresponding $γ$-vector are provided for the classical root systems, in terms of noncrossing partitions of types $A$ and $B$. An analogous result is given for the barycentric subdivision of a simplex.

Let F be a 4-regular graph with an Euler system C. We introduce a simple way to modify the interlacement matrix of C so that every circuit partition P of F has an associated modified interlacement matrix M(C,P). If C and C' are Euler systems of F then M(C,C') and M(C',C) are inverses, and for any circuit partition P, M(C',P)=M(C',C)M(C,P). This machinery allows for short proofs of several results regarding the linear algebra of interlacement.
Conservation Laws of Random Matrix Theory

This paper presents an overview of the derivation and significance of recently derived conservation laws for the matrix moments of Hermitean random matrices with dominant exponential weights that may be either even or odd. This is based on a detailed asymptotic analysis of the partition function for these unitary ensembles and their scaling limits. As a particular application we derive closed form expressions for the coefficients of the genus expansion for the associated free energy in a particular class of dominant even weights. These coefficients are generating functions for enumerating g-maps, related to graphical combinatorics on Riemann surfaces. This generalizes and resolves a 30+ year old conjecture in the physics literature related to quantum gravity.
