Based on weighted noncrossing partitions of type B, we obtain type B analogues of Coker's identities on the Narayana polynomials. A parity reversing involution is given for the alternating sum of Narayana numbers of type B. Moreover, we find type B analogues of the refinements of Coker's identities due to Chen, Deutsch and Elizalde. By combinatorial constructions, we provide type B analogues of three identities of Mansour and Sun also on the Narayana polynomials.

We prove a formula expressing the Kerov polynomial $Σ_k$ as a weighted sum over the lattice of noncrossing partitions of the set $\{1,...,k+1\}$. In particular, such a formula is related to a partial order $\mirr$ on the Lehner's irreducible noncrossing partitions which can be described in terms of left-to-right minima and maxima, descents and excedances of permutations. This provides a translation of the formula in terms of the Cayley graph of the symmetric group $\frak{S}_k$ and allows us to recover the coefficients of $Σ_k$ by means of the posets $P_k$ and $Q_k$ of pattern-avoiding permutations discovered by Bóna and Simion. We also obtain symmetric functions specializing in the coefficients of $Σ_k$.

This is the third and final installment in our series of papers applying the method of Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer to deduce formulas for rank differences. The study of rank differences was initiated by Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer in their proof of Dyson's conjectures concerning Ramanujan's congruences for the partition function. Since then, other types of rank differences for statistics associated to partitions have been investigated. In this paper, we prove explicit formulas for M_2-rank differences for overpartitions. Additionally, we express a third order mock theta function in terms of rank differences.

It has been proven that the accessibility of the target sites has a critical influence for miRNA and siRNA. In this paper, we present a program, rip2.0, not only the energetically most favorable targets site based on the hybrid-probability, but also a statistical sampling structure to illustrate the statistical characterization and representation of the Boltzmann ensemble of RNA-RNA interaction structures. The outputs are retrieved via backtracing an improved dynamic programming solution for the partition function based on the approach of Huang et al. (Bioinformatics). The $O(N^6)$ time and $O(N^4)$ space algorithm is implemented in C (available from \url{http://www.combinatorics.cn/cbpc/rip2.html})
A Combinatorial Result on Block Matrices
Given a matrix with partitions of its rows and columns and entries from a field, we give the necessary and sufficient conditions that it has a non--singular submatrix with certain number of rows from each row partition and certain number of columns from each column partition.

A {\em pointed partition} of $n$ is a pair $(λ, v)$ where $λ\vdash n$ and $v$ is a cell in its Ferrers diagram. We construct an involution on pointed partitions of $n$ exchanging "hook length" and "part length". This gives a bijective proof of a recent result of Bessenrodt and Han.
The stability of the Kronecker products of Schur functions

In the late 1930's Murnaghan discovered the existence of a stabilization phenomenon for the Kronecker product of Schur functions. For n sufficiently large, the values of the Kronecker coefficients appearing in the product of two Schur functions of degree n do not depend on the first part of the indexing partitions, but only on the values of their remaining parts. We compute the exact value of n for which all the coefficients of a Kronecker product of Schur functions stabilize. We also compute two new bounds for the stabilization of a sequence of coefficients and show that they improve existing bounds of M. Brion and E. Vallejo.

We investigate infinite versions of vector and affine space partition results, and thus obtain examples and a counterexample for a partition problem for relational structures. In particular we provide two (related) examples of an age indivisible relational structure which is not weakly indivisible.
A Gray path on binary partitions
A binary partition of a positive integer $n$ is a partition of $n$ in which each part has size a power of two. In this note we first construct a Gray sequence on the set of binary partitions of $n$. This is an ordering of the set of binary partitions of each $n$ (or of all $n$) such that adjacent partitions differ by one of a small set of elementary transformations; here the allowed transformatios are replacing $2^k+2^k$ by $2^{k+1}$ or vice versa (or addition of a new +1). Next we give a purely local condition for finding the successor of any partition in this sequence; the rule is so simple that successive transitions can be performed in constant time. Finally we show how to compute directly the bijection between $k$ and the $k$th term in the sequence.
This answers a question posed by Donald Knuth in section 7.2.1 of The Art of Computer Programming.

Let $π$ be a set partition of $[n]=\{1,2,...,n\}$. The standard representation of $π$ is the graph on the vertex set $[n]$ whose edges are the pairs $(i,j)$ of integers with $i<j$ in the same block which does not contain any integer between $i$ and $j$. The front representation of $π$ is the graph on the vertex set $[n]$ whose edges are the pairs $(i,j)$ of integers with $i<j$ in the same block whose smallest integer is $i$. Using the front representation, we find a recurrence relation for the number of $12... k12$-avoiding partitions for $k\geq2$. Similarly, we find a recurrence relation for the number of $k$-distant noncrossing partitions for $k=2,3$. We also prove that the front representation has several joint symmetric distributions for crossings and nestings as the standard representation does.
Some Exact Results on the Potts Model Partition Function in a Magnetic Field

We consider the Potts model in a magnetic field on an arbitrary graph $G$. Using a formula of F. Y. Wu for the partition function $Z$ of this model as a sum over spanning subgraphs of $G$, we prove some properties of $Z$ concerning factorization, monotonicity, and zeros. A generalization of the Tutte polynomial is presented that corresponds to this partition function. In this context we formulate and discuss two weighted graph-coloring problems. We also give a general structural result for $Z$ for cyclic strip graphs.
An improved bound for the stepping-up lemma

The partition relation N \to (n)_{\ell}^k means that whenever the k-tuples of an N-element set are \ell-colored, there is a monochromatic set of size n, where a set is called monochromatic if all its k-tuples have the same color. The logical negation of N \to (n)_{\ell}^k is written as N \not \to (n)_{\ell}^k. An ingenious construction of Erdős and Hajnal known as the stepping-up lemma gives a negative partition relation for higher uniformity from one of lower uniformity, effectively gaining an exponential in each application. Namely, if \ell \geq 2, k \geq 3, and N \not \to (n)_{\ell}^k, then 2^N \not \to (2n+k-4)_{\ell}^{k+1}. In this note we give an improved construction for k \geq 4. We introduce a general class of colorings which extends the framework of Erdős and Hajnal and can be used to establish negative partition relations. We show that if \ell \geq 2, k \geq 4 and N \not \to (n)_{\ell}^k, then 2^N \not \to (n+3)_{\ell}^{k+1}. If also k is odd or \ell \geq 3, then we get the better bound 2^N \not \to (n+2)_{\ell}^{k+1}. This improved bound gives a coloring of the k-tuples whose largest monochromatic set is a factor Ω(2^{k}) smaller than given by the original version of the stepping-up lemma. We give several applications of our result to lower bounds on hypergraph Ramsey numbers. In particular, for fixed \ell \geq 4 we determine up to an absolute constant factor (which is independent of k) the size of the largest guaranteed monochromatic set in an \ell-coloring of the k-tuples of an N-set.

We show that any binary $(n=2^m-3, 2^{n-m}, 3)$ code $C_1$ is a part of an equitable partition (perfect coloring) $\{C_1,C_2,C_3,C_4\}$ of the $n$-cube with the parameters $((0,1,n-1,0)(1,0,n-1,0)(1,1,n-4,2)(0,0,n-1,1))$. Now the possibility to lengthen the code $C_1$ to a 1-perfect code of length $n+2$ is equivalent to the possibility to split the part $C_4$ into two distance-3 codes or, equivalently, to the biparticity of the graph of distances 1 and 2 of $C_4$. In any case, $C_1$ is uniquely embeddable in a twofold 1-perfect code of length $n+2$ with some structural restrictions, where by a twofold 1-perfect code we mean that any vertex of the space is within radius 1 from exactly two codewords.

Resorting to the recursions satisfied by the polynomials which converge to the right hand sides of the Rogers-Ramanujan type identities given by Sills and a determinant method presented in a paper by Ismail-Prodinger-Stanton, we obtain many new one-parameter generalizations of the Rogers-Ramanujan type identities, such as a generalization of the analytic versions of the first and second Göllnitz-Gordon partition identities, and generalizations of the first, second, and third Rogers-Selberg identities.

Given integers $a_1, a_2, ..., a_n$, with $a_1 + a_2 + ... + a_n \geq 1$, a symmetrically constrained composition $λ_1 + lambda_2 + ... + lambda_n = M$ of $M$ into $n$ nonnegative parts is one that satisfies each of the the $n!$ constraints
${\sum_{i=1}^n a_i λ_{π(i)} \geq 0 : π\in S_n}$. We show how to compute the generating function of these compositions, combining methods from partition theory, permutation statistics, and lattice-point enumeration.
On weight distributions of perfect colorings and completely regular codes

A vertex coloring of a graph is called "perfect" if for any two colors $a$ and $b$, the number of the color-$b$ neighbors of a color-$a$ vertex $x$ does not depend on the choice of $x$, that is, depends only on $a$ and $b$ (the corresponding partition of the vertex set is known as "equitable"). A set of vertices is called "completely regular" if the coloring according to the distance from this set is perfect. By the "weight distribution" of some coloring with respect to some set we mean the information about the number of vertices of every color at every distance from the set. We study the weight distribution of a perfect coloring (equitable partition) of a graph with respect to a completely regular set (in particular, with respect to a vertex if the graph is distance-regular). We show how to compute this distribution by the knowledge of the color composition over the set. For some partial cases of completely regular sets, we derive explicit formulas of weight distributions. Since any (other) completely regular set itself generates a perfect coloring, this gives universal formulas for calculating the weight distribution of any completely regular set from its parameters. In the case of Hamming graphs, we prove a very simple formula for the weight enumerator of an arbitrary perfect coloring. Codewords: completely regular code; equitable partition; partition design; perfect coloring; perfect structure; regular partition; weight distribution; weight enumerator.

If χ^λis the irreducible character of the symmetric group S_n corresponding to the partition λof n then we may symmetrize a tensor v_1 \otimes ... \otimes v_n by χ^λ. Gamas's theorem states that the result is not zero if and only if we can partition the set {v_i} into linearly independent sets whose sizes are the parts of the transpose of λ. We give a short and self-contained proof of this fact.

In the first part of this paper, we provide a concise review of our method of solution of the $A_r$ Q-systems in terms of the partition function of paths on a weighted graph. In the second part, we show that it is possible to modify the graphs and transfer matrices so as to provide an explicit connection to the theory of planar networks introduced in the context of totally positive matrices by Fomin and Zelevinsky. As an illustration of the further generality of our method, we apply it to give a simple solution for the rank 2 affine cluster algebras studied by Caldero and Zelevinsky.
A generalization of the brauer algebra
We study two variations of the Brauer algebra $B_n(x)$. The first is the algebra $A_n(x)$, which generalizes the Brauer algebra by considering loops. The second is the algebra $L_n(x)$, the $A_n(x)$-subalgebra generated by diagrams without horizontal arcs. $A_n(x)$ and $L_n(x)$ have for $x \neq 0$ an hereditary-chain indexed by all integers. Following the ideas of Martin in the context of the partition algebra, and Doran et al. for the Brauer algebra, we study semisimplicity of $A_n(x)$ using restriction and induction in $A_n(x)$ and $L_n(x)$. Our main result is that $A_n(x)$ is semisimple if $x \notin Z$ and that $L_n(x)$ is semisimple if $x \neq 0$.
