Looping of the numbers game and the alcoved hypercube
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study in detail the so-called looping case of Mozes's game of numbers, which concerns the (finite) orbits in the reflection representation of affine Weyl groups situated on the boundary of the Tits cone. We give a simple proof that all configurations in the orbit are obtainable from each other by playing the numbers game, and give a strategy for going from one configuration to another. The strategy gives rise to a partition of the finite Weyl group into finitely many graded posets, one for each extending vertex of the associated extended Dynkin diagram. These are selfdual and mutually isomorphic, and dual to the triangulation of the unit hypercube by reflecting hyperplanes, studied by many authors. Unlike the weak and Bruhat orders, the top degree is cubic in the number of vertices of the graph. We explicitly compute the Hilbert polynomial of the poset.

On the Generalized Climbing Stairs Problem
Let $\mathcal S$ be a subset of the positive integers, and $M$ be a positive integer. Mohammad K. Azarian, inspired by work of Tony Colledge, considered the number of ways to climb a staircase containing $n$ stairs using "step-sizes" $s \in \mathcal S$ and multiplicities at most $M$. In this exposition, we find a solution via generating functions, i.e., an expression which counts the number of partitions $n = \sum_{s \in \mathcal S} m_s s$ satisfying $0 \leq m_s \leq M$. We then use this result to answer a series of questions posed by Azarian, thereby showing a link with ten sequences listed in the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences. We conclude by posing open questions which seek to count the number of compositions of $n$.

Biranks for Partitions into 2 Colors
In 2003, Hammond and Lewis defined a statistic on partitions into 2 colors which combinatorially explains certain well known partition congruences mod 5. We give two analogs of Hammond and Lewis's birank statistic. One analog is in terms of Dyson's rank and the second uses the 5-core crank due to Garvan, Kim and Stanton. We discuss Andrews's bicrank statistic and how it may be extended. We also generalize the Hammond-Lewis birank to a multirank for multipartitions and the Andrews bicrank to a multicrank for extended multipartitions. These both give combinatorial interpretations for multipartition congruences modulo all primes t>3.

A Natural Bijection between Permutations and a Family of Descending Plane Partitions
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 31, Issue 7 (2010), 1785-1791 • View PublicationBIB
We construct a direct natural bijection between descending plane partitions without any special part and permutations. The directness is in the sense that the bijection avoids any reference to nonintersecting lattice paths. The advantage of the bijection is that it provides an interpretation for the seemingly long list of conditions needed to define descending plane partitions. Unfortunately, the bijection does not relate the number of parts of the descending plane partition with the number of inversions of the permutation as one might have expected from the conjecture of Mills, Robbins and Rumsey, although there is a simple expression for the number of inversions of a permutation in terms of the corresponding descending plane partition.

A Multi-Set Identity for Partitions
We prove that the multiset {(RightArmLength,LeftArmLength)} ranging over all cells of all Ferrers diagrams with n cells equals the multiset {(RightArmLength,LegLength)} ranging over all cells of all Ferrers diagrams with n cells, thereby refining a multi-set identity proved by C. Bessenrodt and by Bacher and L. Manivel. Added In revised version: Guo-Niu Han kindly pointed out to us that our main result is contained in reference [B.H] of the present article.

Ascent sequences and upper triangular matrices containing non-negative integers
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper presents a bijection between ascent sequences and upper triangular matrices whose non-negative entries are such that all rows and columns contain at least one non-zero entry. We show the equivalence of several natural statistics on these structures under this bijection and prove that some of these statistics are equidistributed. Several special classes of matrices are shown to have simple formulations in terms of ascent sequences. Binary matrices are shown to correspond to ascent sequences with no two adjacent entries the same. Bidiagonal matrices are shown to be related to order-consecutive set partitions and a simple condition on the ascent sequences generate this class.

Noncrossing partitions and the shard intersection order
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define a new lattice structure on the elements of a finite Coxeter group W. This lattice, called the shard intersection order, is weaker than the weak order and has the noncrossing partition lattice NC(W) as a sublattice. The new construction of NC(W) yields a new proof that NC(W) is a lattice. The shard intersection order is graded and its rank generating function is the W-Eulerian polynomial. Many order-theoretic properties of the shard intersection order, like Mobius number, number of maximal chains, etc., are exactly analogous to the corresponding properties of NC(W). There is a natural dimension-preserving bijection between simplices in the order complex of the shard intersection order (i.e. chains in the shard intersection order) and simplices in a certain pulling triangulation of the W-permutohedron. Restricting the bijection to the order complex of NC(W) yields a bijection to simplices in a pulling triangulation of the W-associahedron. The shard intersection order is defined indirectly via the polyhedral geometry of the reflecting hyperplanes of W. Indeed, most of the results of the paper are proven in the more general setting of simplicial hyperplane arrangements.

Generating All Partitions: A Comparison Of Two Encodings
Integer partitions may be encoded as either ascending or descending compositions for the purposes of systematic generation. Many algorithms exist to generate all descending compositions, yet none have previously been published to generate all ascending compositions. We develop three new algorithms to generate all ascending compositions and compare these with descending composition generators from the literature. We analyse the new algorithms and provide new and more precise analyses for the descending composition generators. In each case, the ascending composition generation algorithm is substantially more efficient than its descending composition counterpart. We develop a new formula for the partition function p(n) as part of our analysis of the lexicographic succession rule for ascending compositions.

Monomial Crystals and Partition Crystals
Published in SIGMA 6 (2010), 035, 8 pages • View PublicationBIB
Recently Fayers introduced a large family of combinatorial realizations of the fundamental crystal for affine sl(n), where the vertices are indexed by certain partitions. He showed that special cases of this construction agree with the Misra-Miwa realization and with Berg's ladder crystal. Here we show that another special case is naturally isomorphic to a realization using Nakajima's monomial crystal.

$q,t$-Catalan numbers and generators for the radical ideal defining the diagonal locus of $(\C^2)^n$
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 18 (2011), no. 1 • View PublicationBIB
Let $I$ be the ideal generated by alternating polynomials in two sets of $n$ variables. Haiman proved that the $q,t$-Catalan number is the Hilbert series of the graded vector space $M(=\bigoplus_{d_1,d_2}M_{d_1,d_2})$ spanned by a minimal set of generators for $I$. In this paper we give simple upper bounds on $\text{dim}M_{d_1, d_2}$ in terms of partition numbers, and find all bi-degrees $(d_1,d_2)$ such that $\dim M_{d_1, d_2}$ achieve the upper bounds. For such bi-degrees, we also find explicit bases for $M_{d_1, d_2}$. The main idea is to define and study a nontrivial linear map from $M$ to a polynomial ring $\C[ρ_1, ρ_2,...]$.

Invariant colorings of random planar maps

Consider Bernoulli(1/2) percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, and define a perfect matching between open and closed vertices in a way that is a deterministic equivariant function of the configuration. We want to find such matching rules that make the probability that the pair of the origin is at distance greater than $r$ decay as fast as possible. For two dimensions, we give a matching of decay $cr^{1/2}$, which is optimal. For dimension at least 3 we give a matching rule that has an exponential tail. This substantially improves previous bounds. The construction has two major parts: first we define a sequence of coarser and coarser partitions of $\mathbb{Z}^d$ in an equivariant way, such that with high probability the cell of a fixed point is like a cube, and the labels in it are i.i.d. Then we define a matching for a fixed finite cell, which stabilizes as we repeatedly apply it for the cells of the consecutive partitions. Our methods also work in the case when one wants to match points of two Poisson processes, and they may be applied to allocation questions.

KKM-type theorems for products of simplices and cutting sets and measures by straight lines
In this paper a version of Knaster-Kuratowski-Mazurkiewicz theorem for products of simplices is formulated. Some corollaries for measure partition in the plane and cutting families of sets in the plane by lines are given.

$(q,t)$-deformations of multivariate hook product formulae
Published • View PublicationBIB
We generalize multivariate hook product formulae for $P$-partitions. We use Macdonald symmetric functions to prove a $(q,t)$-deformation of Gansner's hook product formula for the generating functions of reverse (shifted) plane partitions. (The unshifted case has also been proved by Adachi.) For a $d$-complete poset, we present a conjectural $(q,t)$-deformation of Peterson--Proctor's hook product formula.

New graph polynomials from the Bethe approximation of the Ising partition function
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce two graph polynomials and discuss their properties. One is a polynomial of two variables whose investigation is motivated by the performance analysis of the Bethe approximation of the Ising partition function. The other is a polynomial of one variable that is obtained by the specialization of the first one. It is shown that these polynomials satisfy deletion-contraction relations and are new examples of the V-function, which was introduced by Tutte (1947, Proc. Cambridge Philos. Soc. 43, 26-40). For these polynomials, we discuss the interpretations of special values and then obtain the bound on the number of sub-coregraphs, i.e., spanning subgraphs with no vertices of degree one. It is proved that the polynomial of one variable is equal to the monomer-dimer partition function with weights parameterized by that variable. The properties of the coefficients and the possible region of zeros are also discussed for this polynomial.

A Variant of the Stanley Depth for Multisets
Published in Discrete Mathematics Volume 342, Issue 5, May 2019, Pages 1325--1335 • View PublicationBIB
We define and study a variant of the \emph{Stanley depth} which we call \emph{total depth} for partially ordered sets (posets). This total depth is the most natural variant of Stanley depth from $\llbracket S_k\rrbracket$ -- the poset of nonempty subsets of $\{1,2,\dots,k\}$ ordered by inclusion -- to any finite poset. In particular, the total depth can be defined for the poset of nonempty submultisets of a multiset ordered by inclusion, which corresponds to a product of chains with the bottom element deleted. We show that the total depth agrees with Stanley depth for $\llbracket S_k\rrbracket$ but not for such posets in general. We also prove that the total depth of the product of chains $\bm{n}^k$ with the bottom element deleted is $(n-1)\lceil{k/2}\rceil$, which generalizes a result of Bir{ó}, Howard, Keller, Trotter, and Young (2010). Further, we provide upper and lower bounds for a general multiset and find the total depth for any multiset with at most five distinct elements. In addition, we can determine the total depth for any multiset with $k$ distinct elements if we know all the interval partitions of $\llbracket S_k\rrbracket$.

Lattice point methods for combinatorial games
Published • View PublicationBIB
We encode arbitrary finite impartial combinatorial games in terms of lattice points in rational convex polyhedra. Encodings provided by these \emph{lattice games} can be made particularly efficient for octal games, which we generalize to \emph{squarefree games}. These additionally encompass all heap games in a natural setting, in which the Sprague-Grundy theorem for normal play manifests itself geometrically. We provide an algorithm to compute normal play strategies. The setting of lattice games naturally allows for mis`ere play, where 0 is declared a losing position. Lattice games also allow situations where larger finite sets of positions are declared losing. Generating functions for sets of winning positions provide data structures for strategies of lattice games. We conjecture that every lattice game has a \emph{rational strategy}: a rational generating function for its winning positions. Additionally, we conjecture that every lattice game has an \emph{affine stratification}: a partition of its set of winning positions into a finite disjoint union of finitely generated modules for affine semigroups.

Generalization of Fibonomial Coefficients
Following Lucas and then other Fibonacci people Kwasniewski had introduced and had started ten years ago the open investigation of the overall F-nomial coefficients which encompass among others Binomial, Gaussian and Fibonomial coefficients with a new unified combinatorial interpretation expressed in terms of cobweb posets' partitions and tilings of discrete hyperboxes. In this paper, we deal with special subfamily of T-nomial coefficients. The main aim of this note is to develop the theory of T-nomial coefficients with the help of generating functions. The binomial-like theorem for T-nomials is delivered here and some consequences of it are drawn. A new combinatorial interpretation of T-nomial coefficients is provided and compared with the Konvalina way of objects' selections from weighted boxes. A brief summary of already known properties of T-nomial coefficients is served.

Positivity of the T-system cluster algebra
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give the path model solution for the cluster algebra variables of the $A_r$ $T$-system with generic boundary conditions. The solutions are partition functions of (strongly) non-intersecting paths on weighted graphs. The graphs are the same as those constructed for the $Q$-system in our earlier work, and depend on the seed or initial data in terms of which the solutions are given. The weights are "time-dependent" where "time" is the extra parameter which distinguishes the $T$-system from the $Q$-system, usually identified as the spectral parameter in the context of representation theory. The path model is alternatively described on a graph with non-commutative weights, and cluster mutations are interpreted as non-commutative continued fraction rearrangements. As a consequence, the solution is a positive Laurent polynomial of the seed data.

Chain enumeration of $k$-divisible noncrossing partitions of classical types
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 118 (2011) 879-898 • View PublicationBIB
We give combinatorial proofs of the formulas for the number of multichains in the $k$-divisible noncrossing partitions of classical types with certain conditions on the rank and the block size due to Krattenthaler and M{ü}ller. We also prove Armstrong's conjecture on the zeta polynomial of the poset of $k$-divisible noncrossing partitions of type $A$ invariant under a $180^\circ$ rotation in the cyclic representation.
