A Planar Linear Arboricity Conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
The linear arboricity la(G) of a graph G is the minimum number of linear forests that partition the edges of G. In 1984, Akiyama et al. stated the Linear Arboricity Conjecture (LAC), that the linear arboricity of any simple graph of maximum degree $Δ$ is either $\lceil \tfracΔ{2} \rceil$ or $\lceil \tfrac{Δ+1}{2} \rceil$. In [J. L. Wu. On the linear arboricity of planar graphs. J. Graph Theory, 31:129-134, 1999] and [J. L. Wu and Y. W. Wu. The linear arboricity of planar graphs of maximum degree seven is four. J. Graph Theory, 58(3):210-220, 2008.] it was proven that LAC holds for all planar graphs. LAC implies that for $Δ$ odd, ${\rm la}(G)=\big \lceil \tfracΔ{2} \big \rceil$. We conjecture that for planar graphs this equality is true also for any even $Δ\ge 6$. In this paper we show that it is true for any even $Δ\ge 10$, leaving open only the cases $Δ=6, 8$. We present also an O(n log n)-time algorithm for partitioning a planar graph into max{la(G),5} linear forests, which is optimal when $Δ\ge 9$.

Cyclic sieving for generalised non-crossing partitions associated to complex reflection groups of exceptional type - the details
We prove that the generalised non-crossing partitions associated to well-generated complex reflection groups of exceptional type obey two different cyclic sieving phenomena, as conjectured by Armstrong, respectively by Bessis and Reiner. This manuscript accompanies the paper "Cyclic sieving for generalised non-crossing partitions associated to complex reflection groups of exceptional type" [arXiv:1001.0028], for which it provides the computational details.

Noncrossing partitions, clusters and the Coxeter plane
When W is a finite Coxeter group of classical type (A, B, or D), noncrossing partitions associated to W and compatibility of almost positive roots in the associated root system are known to be modeled by certain planar diagrams. We show how the classical-type constructions of planar diagrams arise uniformly from projections of small W-orbits to the Coxeter plane. When the construction is applied beyond the classical cases, simple criteria are apparent for noncrossing and for compatibility for W of types H_3 and I_2(m) and less simple criteria can be found for compatibility in types E_6, F_4 and H_4. Our construction also explains why simple combinatorial models are elusive in the larger exceptional types.
Square Partitions and Catalan Numbers
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 34 (2011), no. 1, 1-18 • View PublicationBIB
For each integer $k\ge 1$, we define an algorithm which associates to a partition whose maximal value is at most $k$ a certain subset of all partitions. In the case when we begin with a partition $λ$ which is square, i.e $λ=λ_1\ge...\geλ_k>0$, and $λ_1=k,λ_k=1$, then applying the algorithm $\ell$ times gives rise to a set whose cardinality is either the Catalan number $c_{\ell-k+1}$ (the self dual case) or twice the Catalan number. The algorithm defines a tree and we study the propagation of the tree, which is not in the isomorphism class of the usual Catalan tree. The algorithm can also be modified to produce a two--parameter family of sets and the resulting cardinalities of the sets are the ballot numbers. Finally, we give a conjecture on the rank of a particular module for the ring of symmetric functions in $2\ell+m$ variables.

Reduced Kronecker products which are multiplicity free or contain only few components
Published in European J. Combin. 31 (2010), pp. 1996-2005 • View PublicationBIB
It is known that the Kronecker coefficient of three partitions is a bounded and weakly increasing sequence if one increases the first part of all three partitions. Furthermore if the first parts of partitions λ,μare big enough then the coefficients of the Kronecker product [λ][μ]=\sum_\n g(ł,\m,\n)[ν] do not depend on the first part but only on the other parts. The reduced Kronecker product [λ]_\bullet \star[μ]_\bullet can be viewed (roughly) as the Kronecker product [(n-|λ|,λ)][(n-|μ|,\m)] for n big enough. In this paper we classify the reduced Kronecker products which are multiplicity free and those which contain less than 10 components. We furthermore give general lower bounds for the number of constituents and components of a given reduced Kronecker product. We also give a lower bound for the number of pairs of components whose corresponding partitions differ by one box. Finally we argue that equality of two reduced Kronecker products is only possible in the trivial case that the factors of the product are the same.

Properties of $θ$-super positive graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let the matching polynomial of a graph $G$ be denoted by $μ(G,x)$. A graph $G$ is said to be $θ$-super positive if $μ(G,θ)\neq 0$ and $μ(G\setminus v,θ)=0$ for all $v\in V(G)$. In particular, $G$ is 0-super positive if and only if $G$ has a perfect matching. While much is known about 0-super positive graphs, almost nothing is known about $θ$-super positive graphs for $θ\not = 0$. This motivates us to investigate the structure of $θ$-super positive graphs in this paper. Though a 0-super positive graph may not contain any cycle, we show that a $θ$-super positive graph with $θ\not = 0$ must contain a cycle. We introduce two important types of $θ$-super positive graphs, namely $θ$-elementary and $θ$-base graphs. One of our main results is that any $θ$-super positive graph $G$ can be constructed by adding certain type of edges to a disjoint union of $θ$-base graphs; moreover, these $θ$-base graphs are uniquely determined by $G$. We also give a characterization of $θ$-elementary graphs: a graph $G$ is $θ$-elementary if and only if the set of all its $θ$-barrier sets form a partition of $V(G)$. Here, $θ$-elementary graphs and $θ$-barrier sets can be regarded as $θ$-analogue of elementary graphs and Tutte sets in classical matching theory.
Random skew plane partitions with a piecewise periodic back wall
Published in Annales Henri Poincaré: Volume 13, Issue 2 (2012), Page 271-296 • View PublicationBIB
Random skew plane partitions of large size distributed according to an appropriately scaled Schur process develop limit shapes. In the present work we consider the limit of large random skew plane partitions where the inner boundary approaches a piecewise linear curve with non-lattice slopes, describing the limit shape and the local fluctuations in various regions. This analysis is fairly similar to that in [OR2], but we do find some new behavior. For instance, the boundary of the limit shape is now a single smooth (not algebraic) curve, whereas the boundary in [OR2] is singular. We also observe the bead process introduced in [B] appearing in the asymptotics at the top of the limit shape.

Discrete Dirac Operators, Critical Embeddings and Ihara-Selberg Functions
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 22(1) (2015), #P1.10 • View PublicationBIB
The aim of the paper is to formulate a discrete analogue of the claim made by Alvarez-Gaume et al., realizing the partition function of the free fermion on a closed Riemann surface of genus g as a linear combination of 2^{2g} Pfaffians of Dirac operators. Let G=(V,E) be a finite graph embedded in a closed Riemann surface X of genus g, x_e the collection of independent variables associated with each edge e of G (collected in one vector variable x) and S the set of all 2^{2g} Spin-structures on X. We introduce 2^{2g} rotations rot_s and (2|E| times 2|E|) matrices D(s)(x), s in S, of the transitions between the oriented edges of G determined by rotations rot_s. We show that the generating function for the even subsets of edges of G, i.e., the Ising partition function, is a linear combination of the square roots of 2^{2g} Ihara-Selberg functions I(D(s)(x)) also called Feynman functions. By a result of Foata--Zeilberger holds I(D(s)(x))= det(I-D'(s)(x)), where D'(s)(x) is obtained from D(s)(x) by replacing some entries by 0. Thus each Feynman function is computable in polynomial time. We suggest that in the case of critical embedding of a bipartite graph G, the Feynman functions provide suitable discrete analogues for the Pfaffians of discrete Dirac operators.

Caustics, counting maps and semi-classical asymptotics
Published in Nonlinearity, Volume 24, Number 2, February 2011, pp. 481 - 526 • View PublicationBIB
This paper develops a deeper understanding of the structure and combinatorial significance of the partition function for Hermitian random matrices. The coefficients of the large N expansion of the logarithm of this partition function, also known as the genus expansion, (and its derivatives) are generating functions for a variety of graphical enumeration problems. The main results are to prove that these generating functions are in fact specific rational functions of a distinguished irrational (algebraic) function of the generating function parameters. This distinguished function is itself the generating function for the Catalan numbers (or generalized Catalan numbers, depending on the choice of parameter). It is also a solution of the inviscid Burgers equation for certain initial data. The shock formation, or caustic, of the Burgers characteristic solution is directly related to the poles of the rational forms of the generating functions. These results in turn provide new information about the asymptotics of recurrence coefficients for orthogonal polynomials with respect to exponential weights. One gains new insights into the relation between certain derivatives of the genus expansion and the asymptotic expansion of the first Painleve transcendent, related to the double-scaling limit. This work provides a precise expression of the Painleve asymptotic coefficients directly in terms of the coefficients of the partial fractions expansion of the rational form of the generating functions established here. Moreover, these insights point toward a more general program relating the first Painleve hierarchy and the higher order structure of the double-scaling limit to the specific rational structure of generating functions.

A closed character formula for symmetric powers of irreducible representations
Published in Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science (DMTCS) proceedings, 2010, 833-844 • View PublicationBIB
We prove a closed character formula for the symmetric powers $S^N V(λ)$ of a fixed irreducible representation $V(λ)$ of a complex semi-simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ by means of partial fraction decomposition. The formula involves rational functions in rank of $\mathfrak{g}$ many variables which are easier to determine than the weight multiplicities of $S^N V(λ)$ themselves. We compute those rational functions in some interesting cases. Furthermore, we introduce a residue-type generating function for the weight multiplicities of $S^N V(λ)$ and explain the connections between our character formula, vector partition functions and iterated partial fraction decomposition.

Nonzero coefficients in restrictions and tensor products of supercharacters of $U_n(q)$
Published • View PublicationBIB
The standard supercharacter theory of the finite unipotent upper-triangular matrices $U_n(q)$ gives rise to a beautiful combinatorics based on set partitions. As with the representation theory of the symmetric group, embeddings of $U_m(q)\subseteq U_n(q)$ for $m\leq n$ lead to branching rules. Diaconis and Isaacs established that the restriction of a supercharacter of $U_n(q)$ is a nonnegative integer linear combination of supercharacters of $U_m(q)$ (in fact, it is polynomial in $q$). In a first step towards understanding the combinatorics of coefficients in the branching rules of the supercharacters of $U_n(q)$, this paper characterizes when a given coefficient is nonzero in the restriction of a supercharacter and the tensor product of two supercharacters. These conditions are given uniformly in terms of complete matchings in bipartite graphs.

Combinatorics of the three-parameter PASEP partition function
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 18(1) (2011), Article P22 • View PublicationBIB
We consider a partially asymmetric exclusion process (PASEP) on a finite number of sites with open and directed boundary conditions. Its partition function was calculated by Blythe, Evans, Colaiori, and Essler. It is known to be a generating function of permutation tableaux by the combinatorial interpretation of Corteel and Williams. We prove bijectively two new combinatorial interpretations. The first one is in terms of weighted Motzkin paths called Laguerre histories and is obtained by refining a bijection of Foata and Zeilberger. Secondly we show that this partition function is the generating function of permutations with respect to right-to-left minima, right-to-left maxima, ascents, and 31-2 patterns, by refining a bijection of Francon and Viennot. Then we give a new formula for the partition function which generalizes the one of Blythe & al. It is proved in two combinatorial ways. The first proof is an enumeration of lattice paths which are known to be a solution of the Matrix Ansatz of Derrida & al. The second proof relies on a previous enumeration of rook placements, which appear in the combinatorial interpretation of a related normal ordering problem. We also obtain a closed formula for the moments of Al-Salam-Chihara polynomials.

Towards computing vector partition functions by iterated partial fraction decomposition
We investigate the possibilities to calculate vector partition functions by means of iterated partial fraction decomposition, as suggested by Beck (2004). Particularly, for an important type of families of rational functions, we describe an algorithm to compute the numerators in their partial fraction decomposition "formally," i.e., as a formal expression in the parameter. We also analyze the type of generalized rational functions that appear during the execution of an algorithm based on iterated partial fraction decomposition and explain how to handle these objects.

The Correlation Functions of the XXZ Heisenberg Chain for Zero or Infinite Anisotropy and Random Walks of Vicious Walkers
Published in St.-Petersburg Mathematical Journal, Vol. 22, No. 3 (2011), 359-377 • View PublicationBIB
The XXZ Heisenberg chain is considered for two specific limits of the anisotropy parameter: $\Dl\to 0$ and $\Dl\to -\infty$. The corresponding wave functions are expressed by means of the symmetric Schur functions. Certain expectation values and thermal correlation functions of the ferromagnetic string operators are calculated over the base of N-particle Bethe states. The thermal correlator of the ferromagnetic string is expressed through the generating function of the lattice paths of random walks of vicious walkers. A relationship between the expectation values obtained and the generating functions of strict plane partitions in a box is discussed. Asymptotic estimate of the thermal correlator of the ferromagnetic string is obtained in the limit of zero temperature. It is shown that its amplitude is related to the number of plane partitions.

On a conjecture of Stanley depth of squarefree Veronese ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we partially confirm a conjecture, proposed by Cimpoeaş, Keller, Shen, Streib and Young, on the Stanley depth of squarefree Veronese ideals $I_{n,d}$. This conjecture suggests that, for positive integers $1 \le d \le n$, $\sdepth (I_{n,d})= \lfloor \binom{n}{d+1}/\binom{n}{d} \rfloor+d$. Herzog, Vladoiu and Zheng established a connection between the Stanley depths of quotients of monomial ideals and interval partitions of certain associated posets. Based on this connection, Keller, Shen, Streib and Young recently developed a useful combinatorial tool to analyze the interval partitions of the posets associated with the squarefree Veronese ideals. We modify their ideas and prove that if $1 \le d \le n \le (d+1) \lfloor \frac{1+\sqrt{5+4d}}{2}\rfloor+2d$, then $\sdepth (I_{n,d})= \lfloor \binom{n}{d+1}/\binom{n}{d} \rfloor+d$. We also obtain $ \lfloor \frac{d+\sqrt{d^2+4(n+1)}}{2} \rfloor \le \sdepth(I_{n,d}) \le \lfloor \binom{n}{d+1}/\binom{n}{d} \rfloor+d$ for $n > (d+1) \lfloor \frac{1+\sqrt{5+4d}}{2}\rfloor+2d$. As a byproduct of our construction, We give an alternative proof of Theorem $1.1 $ in $[13]$ without graph theory.

A Franklin Type Involution for Squares
Published • View PublicationBIB
We find an involution as a combinatorial proof of a Ramanujan's partial theta identity. Based on this involution, we obtain a Franklin type involution for squares in the sense that the classical Franklin involution provides a combinatorial interpretation of Euler's pentagonal number theorem. This Franklin type involution can be considered as a solution to a problem proposed by Pak concerning the parity of the number of partitions of n into distinct parts with the smallest part being odd. Using a weighted form of our involution, we give a combinatorial proof of a weighted partition theorem derived by Alladi from Ramanujan's partial theta identity. This answers a question of Berndt, Kim and Yee. Furthermore, through a different weight assignment, we find combinatorial interpretations for another partition theorem derived by Alladi from a partial theta identity of Andrews. Moreover, we obtain a partition theorem based on Andrews' identity and provide a combinatorial proof by certain weight assignment for our involution. A specialization of our partition theorem is relate to an identity of Andrews concerning partitions into distinct nonnegative parts with the smallest part being even. Finally, we give a more general form of our partition theorem which in return corresponds to a generalization of Andrews' identity.
Drop cost and wavelength optimal two-period grooming with ratio 4
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study grooming for two-period optical networks, a variation of the traffic grooming problem for WDM ring networks introduced by Colbourn, Quattrocchi, and Syrotiuk. In the two-period grooming problem, during the first period of time, there is all-to-all uniform traffic among $n$ nodes, each request using $1/C$ of the bandwidth; and during the second period, there is all-to-all uniform traffic only among a subset $V$ of $v$ nodes, each request now being allowed to use $1/C'$ of the bandwidth, where $C' < C$. We determine the minimum drop cost (minimum number of ADMs) for any $n,v$ and C=4 and $C' \in \{1,2,3\}$. To do this, we use tools of graph decompositions. Indeed the two-period grooming problem corresponds to minimizing the total number of vertices in a partition of the edges of the complete graph $K_n$ into subgraphs, where each subgraph has at most $C$ edges and where furthermore it contains at most $C'$ edges of the complete graph on $v$ specified vertices. Subject to the condition that the two-period grooming has the least drop cost, the minimum number of wavelengths required is also determined in each case.

Random $k$-noncrossing partitions
In this paper, we introduce polynomial time algorithms that generate random $k$-noncrossing partitions and 2-regular, $k$-noncrossing partitions with uniform probability. A $k$-noncrossing partition does not contain any $k$ mutually crossing arcs in its canonical representation and is 2-regular if the latter does not contain arcs of the form $(i,i+1)$. Using a bijection of Chen {\it et al.} \cite{Chen,Reidys:08tan}, we interpret $k$-noncrossing partitions and 2-regular, $k$-noncrossing partitions as restricted generalized vacillating tableaux. Furthermore, we interpret the tableaux as sampling paths of a Markov-processes over shapes and derive their transition probabilities.

Combinatorial interpretations of binomial coefficient analogues related to Lucas sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let s and t be variables. Define polynomials {n} in s, t by {0}=0, {1}=1, and {n}=s{n-1}+t{n-2} for n >= 2. If s, t are integers then the corresponding sequence of integers is called a Lucas sequence. Define an analogue of the binomial coefficients by C{n,k}={n}!/({k}!{n-k}!) where {n}!={1}{2}...{n}. It is easy to see that C{n,k} is a polynomial in s and t. The purpose of this note is to give two combinatorial interpretations for this polynomial in terms of statistics on integer partitions inside a k by n-k rectangle. When s=t=1 we obtain combinatorial interpretations of the fibonomial coefficients which are simpler than any that have previously appeared in the literature.
