Optimal bounds for a colorful Tverberg--Vrecica type problem
Published in Adv. Math. 226 (2011), no. 6, 5198-5215 • View PublicationBIB
We prove the following optimal colorful Tverberg-Vrecica type transversal theorem: For prime r and for any k+1 colored collections of points C^l of size |C^l|=(r-1)(d-k+1)+1 in R^d, where each C^l is a union of subsets (color classes) C_i^l of size smaller than r, l=0,...,k, there are partition of the collections C^l into colorful sets F_1^l,...,F_r^l such that there is a k-plane that meets all the convex hulls conv(F_j^l), under the assumption that r(d-k) is even or k=0. Along the proof we obtain three results of independent interest: We present two alternative proofs for the special case k=0 (our optimal colored Tverberg theorem (2009)), calculate the cohomological index for joins of chessboard complexes, and establish a new Borsuk-Ulam type theorem for (Z_p)^m-equivariant bundles that generalizes results of Volovikov (1996) and Zivaljevic (1999).

Stanley Decompositions and Polarization
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define nice partitions of the multicomplex associated to a Stanley ideal. As the main result we show that if the monomial ideal $I$ is a CM Stanley ideal, then $I^p$ is a Stanley ideal as well, where $I^p$ is the polarization of $I$.

Arithmetic completely regular codes
Published in Discrete Math. Theor. Comput. Sci. 17 (2016) 59-76 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we explore completely regular codes in the Hamming graphs and related graphs. Experimental evidence suggests that many completely regular codes have the property that the eigenvalues of the code are in arithmetic progression. In order to better understand these "arithmetic completely regular codes", we focus on cartesian products of completely regular codes and products of their corresponding coset graphs in the additive case. Employing earlier results, we are then able to prove a theorem which nearly classifies these codes in the case where the graph admits a completely regular partition into such codes (e.g, the cosets of some additive completely regular code). Connections to the theory of distance-regular graphs are explored and several open questions are posed.

Norm of Bethe Wave Function as a Determinant
This is a historical note. Bethe Ansatz solvable models are considered, for example XXZ Heisenberg anti-ferromagnet and Bose gas with delta interaction. Periodic boundary conditions lead to Bethe equation. The square of the norm of Bethe wave function is equal to a determinant of linearized system of Bethe equations (determinant of matrix of second derivatives of Yang action). The proof was first published in Communications in Mathematical Physics, vol 86, page 391 in l982. Also domain wall boundary conditions for 6 vertex model were discovered in the same paper [see Appendix D]. These play an important role for algebraic combinatorics: alternating sign matrices, domino tiling and plane partition. Many publications are devoted to six vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions.

Judicious partitions of 3-uniform hypergraphs
Published in Combinatorica 32 (2012) • View PublicationBIB
The vertices of any graph with $m$ edges can be partitioned into two parts so that each part meets at least $\frac{2m}{3}$ edges. Bollobás and Thomason conjectured that the vertices of any $r$-uniform graph may be likewise partitioned into $r$ classes such that each part meets at least $cm$ edges, with $c=\frac{r}{2r-1}$. In this paper, we prove this conjecture for the case $r=3$. In the course of the proof we shall also prove an extension of the graph case which was conjectured by Bollobás and Scott.

The three-colour model with domain wall boundary conditions
Published in Adv. Appl. Math 46 (2011), 481-535 • View PublicationBIB
We study the partition function for the three-colour model with domain wall boundary conditions. We express it in terms of certain special polynomials, which can be constructed recursively. Our method generalizes Kuperberg's proof of the alternating sign matrix theorem, replacing the six-vertex model used by Kuperberg with the eight-vertex-solid-on-solid model. As applications, we obtain some combinatorial results on three-colourings. We also conjecture an explicit formula for the free energy of the model.

Wall-crossing, free fermions and crystal melting
Published in Commun. Math. Phys.301:517-562, 2011 • View PublicationBIB
We describe wall-crossing for local, toric Calabi-Yau manifolds without compact four-cycles, in terms of free fermions, vertex operators, and crystal melting. Firstly, to each such manifold we associate two states in the free fermion Hilbert space. The overlap of these states reproduces the BPS partition function corresponding to the non-commutative Donaldson-Thomas invariants, given by the modulus square of the topological string partition function. Secondly, we introduce the wall-crossing operators which represent crossing the walls of marginal stability associated to changes of the B-field through each two-cycle in the manifold. BPS partition functions in non-trivial chambers are given by the expectation values of these operators. Thirdly, we discuss crystal interpretation of such correlators for this whole class of manifolds. We describe evolution of these crystals upon a change of the moduli, and find crystal interpretation of the flop transition and the DT/PT transition. The crystals which we find generalize and unify various other Calabi-Yau crystal models which appeared in literature in recent years.

Factorial Schur functions via the six vertex model
For a particular set of Boltzmann weights and a particular boundary condition for the six vertex model in statistical mechanics, we compute explicitly the partition function and show it to be equal to a factorial Schur function, giving a new proof of a theorem of Lascoux.

The Non-commutative Topological Vertex and Wall Crossing Phenomena
Published in Adv.Theor.Math.Phys.14:1147-1181,2010 • View PublicationBIB
We propose a generalization of the topological vertex, which we call the "non-commutative topological vertex". This gives open BPS invariants for a toric Calabi-Yau manifold without compact 4-cycles, where we have D0/D2/D6-branes wrapping holomorphic 0/2/6-cycles, as well as D2-branes wrapping disks whose boundaries are on D4-branes wrapping non-compact Lagrangian 3-cycles. The vertex is defined combinatorially using the crystal melting model proposed recently, and depends on the value of closed string moduli at infinity. The vertex in one special chamber gives the same answer as that computed by the ordinary topological vertex. We prove an identify expressing the non-commutative topological vertex of a toric Calabi-Yau manifold X as a specialization of the closed BPS partition function of an orbifold of X, thus giving a closed expression for our vertex. We also clarify the action of the Weyl group of an affine A_L Lie algebra on chambers, and comment on the generalization of our results to the case of refined BPS invariants.

Combinatorial Proofs of an Identity from Ramanujan's Lost Notebook and its Variations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We examine an identity originally stated in Ramanujan's ``lost notebook'' and first proven algebraically by Andrews and combinatorially by Kim. We give two independent combinatorial proofs and interpretations of this identity, which also extends an identity recently proven by Pak and Waarnar related to the product of partial theta functions: First, we give a direct combinatorial proof, using the involution principle, of a special case of the identity, and extend this into a direct combinatorial proof of the full identity as written. Second, we show that the identity can be rewritten, using minor algebraic manipulation, into an identity that can be proven with a direct bijection. We provide such a bijection using a generalization of a standard bijection from partition theory.

We show that the joint distribution of the number of singleton pairs and the number of adjacency pairs is symmetric over the set partitions of type $B_n$ without zero-block, in analogy with the result of Callan for ordinary partitions.

Almost all cancellative triple systems are tripartite
A triple system is cancellative if no three of its distinct edges satisfy $A \cup B=A \cup C$. It is tripartite if it has a vertex partition into three parts such that every edge has exactly one point in each part. It is easy to see that every tripartite triple system is cancellative. We prove that almost all cancellative triple systems with vertex set [n] are tripartite. This sharpens a theorem of Nagle and Rodl on the number of cancellative triple systems. It also extends recent work of Person and Schacht who proved a similar result for triple systems without the Fano configuration. Our proof uses the hypergraph regularity lemma of Frankl and Rodl, and a stability theorem for cancellative triple systems due to Keevash and the second author.

Random 3-noncrossing partitions
In this paper, we introduce polynomial time algorithms that generate random 3-noncrossing partitions and 2-regular, 3-noncrossing partitions with uniform probability. A 3-noncrossing partition does not contain any three mutually crossing arcs in its canonical representation and is 2-regular if the latter does not contain arcs of the form $(i,i+1)$. Using a bijection of Chen {\it et al.} \cite{Chen,Reidys:08tan}, we interpret 3-noncrossing partitions and 2-regular, 3-noncrossing partitions as restricted generalized vacillating tableaux. Furthermore, we interpret the tableaux as sampling paths of Markov-processes over shapes and derive their transition probabilities.

Power law behavior associated with a Fibonacci Lucas model and generalized statistical models
A Fibonacci-Lucas based statistical model and several other related models are studied. The canonical and grand canonical partition functions for these models are developed.Partition structure such as the distribution of sizes as in a cluster distribution is explored.Ensemble averaging over all partitions leads to a scale invariant power law behavior at a particular critical like point. The canonical ensemble of the Fibonacci-Lucas case involves the Gegenbauer polynomial. The model has a hyperbolic power law behavior, a feature linked to the golden mean ratio of two adjacent Fibonacci numbers and also the connection of Lucas numbers to the golden mean. The relation to other power law behavior, such as Zipf and Pareto laws, is mentioned. For the cases considered, the grand canonical ensemble involves the Gauss hypergeometric function F(a,b,c,z) with specific values for a,b,c. The general case has a variable power law behavior with tau exponent equal to1+c-a-b. An application with a=1/2, b=1, c=3 and thus tau=5/2 very closely approximates Bose-Einstein condensation. The zeta function zeta(3/2)=2.61 of the exact theory is replaced with 8/3 and zeta(5/2)= 1.34 with 4/3. At the condensation point the number of cycles of length falls as a scale invariant power law. The cycles, which arise from permutation symmetries associated with Bose-Einstein statistics, can be viewed as links in a complex network of connections between particles. This scale invariant power law parallels that seen in complex networks. The growth of the network is developed using recurrence properties of the model. Constraints imposed by the canonical ensemble and associates correlations lead to some number theoretic connections between Fibonacci and Lucas numbers as an incidental consequence of this approach.

New interpretations for noncrossing partitions of classical types
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 118 (2011) 1168-1189 • View PublicationBIB
We interpret noncrossing partitions of type $B$ and type $D$ in terms of noncrossing partitions of type $A$. As an application, we get type-preserving bijections between noncrossing and nonnesting partitions of type $B$, type $C$ and type $D$ which are different from those in the recent work of Fink and Giraldo. We also define Catalan tableaux of type $B$ and type $D$, and find bijections between them and noncrossing partitions of type $B$ and type $D$ respectively.
An Improvement of the Lovász Local Lemma via Cluster Expansion
Published • View PublicationBIB
An old result by Shearer relates the Lovász Local Lemma with the independent set polynomial on graphs, and consequently, as observed by Scott and Sokal, with the partition function of the hard core lattice gas on graphs. We use this connection and a recent result on the analyticity of the logarithm of the partition function of the abstract polymer gas to get an improved version of the Lovász Local Lemma. As applications we obtain tighter bounds on conditions for the existence of latin transversal matrices and the satisfiability of k-SAT forms.

Congruences for the Number of Cubic Partitions Derived from Modular Forms
We obtain congruences for the number a(n) of cubic partitions using modular forms. The notion of cubic partitions is introduced by Chan and named by Kim in connection with Ramanujan's cubic continued fractions. Chan has shown that a(n) has several analogous properties to the number p(n) of partitions, including the generating function, the continued fraction, and congruence relations. To be more specific, we show that $a(25n+22)\equiv 0 ({\rm mod} 5)$, $a(49n+15) \equiv a(49n+29) \equiv a(49n+36) \equiv a(49n+43) \equiv 0 ({\rm mod} 7)$. Furthermore, we prove that a(n) takes infinitely many even values and infinitely odd values.

Minimally Intersecting Set Partitions of Type B

Motivated by Pittel's study of minimally intersecting set partitions, we investigate minimally intersecting set partitions of type B. We find a formula for the number of minimally intersecting r-tuples of $B_n$-partitions, as well as a formula for the number of minimally intersecting r-tuples of $B_n$-partitions without zero-block. As a consequence, it follows the formula of Benoumhani for the Dowling number in analogy to Dobinski's formula.

Matching polytopes and Specht modules
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the dimension of the Specht module of a forest $G$ is the same as the normalized volume of the matching polytope of $G$. We also associate to $G$ a symmetric function $s_G$ (analogous to the Schur symmetric function $s_λ$ for a partition $λ$) and investigate its combinatorial and representation-theoretic properties in relation to the Specht module and Schur module of $G$. We then use this to define notions of standard and semistandard tableaux for forests.
