Flag complex face structures and decompositions
One of the most common and effective methods of obtaining structural information on simplicial complexes is to use tools from algebraic geometry/commutative algebra (often motivated by properties of toric varieties). However, there is no general algebro-geometric description of components of the gamma vector holding for arbitary flag simplicial spheres. This invariant occurs in many different contexts including permutation statistics, signatures of toric varieties, and Euler characteristics of nonpositively curved piecewise Euclidean manifolds. Combinatorial methods resulting from an explicit inverted Chebyshev expansion give rise to new positivity properties and cell complex structures that are of interest in their own right. Note that the focus is on the $f$-vector rather than the $h$-vector in ``algebraic'' settings. For flag simplicial spheres $Δ$, the fact that $h(Δ) = f(Γ)$ and compatibility between Chebyshev expansions and a modification of the $f$-polynomial by work of Hetyei are the key inputs. In the main formula implying new positivity results, local structures of $CAT(0)$ complexes and cubical analogues of barycentric subdivisions give deeper connections with cubical complex structures complementing earlier work related to the top gamma vector component. Afterwards, we return to the motivating example of barycentric subdivisions and consider how $f$-vectors of Cohen--Macaulay and vertex decomposable flag complexes in geometric settings decompose and interact with geometric transformations. This includes subdivisions of simplicial complexes and recursive properties they share with vertex decomposable flag complexes.

Record-biased permutations and their permuton limit
In this article, we study a non-uniform distribution on permutations biased by their number of records that we call \emph{record-biased permutations}. We give several generative processes for record-biased permutations, explaining also how they can be used to devise efficient (linear) random samplers. For several classical permutation statistics, we obtain their expectation using the above generative processes, as well as their limit distributions in the regime that has a logarithmic number of records (as in the uniform case). Finally, increasing the bias to obtain a regime with an expected linear number of records, we establish the convergence of record-biased permutations to a deterministic permuton, which we fully characterize. This model was introduced in our earlier work [N. Auger, M. Bouvel, C. Nicaud, C. Pivoteau, \emph{Analysis of Algorithms for Permutations Biased by Their Number of Records}, AofA 2016], in the context of realistic analysis of algorithms. We conduct here a more thorough study but with a theoretical perspective.

Generalizations of wreath product identities via Garsia-Gessel bijections
Garsia and Gessel constructed innovative bijections to obtain multivariate generating functions of permutation statistics. In 2011, Biaogioli and Zeng successfully derived four and six variate distributions on the set of wreath product. In this paper, we will generalize the four variate identities from BZ to any positive dominant ordering. And we will simplify the six variate distribution function under the ordering originally defined by Adin and Roichman in 2001.

Shelling of links and star clusters in edgewise subdivision of a simplex
We show that the combinatorial types of the links of the vertices in the edgewise triangulation $T_{k,q}$ of a $(k-1)$-simplex are encoded by the partitions of $k$. Each of these complexes is isomorphic to a subcomplex of the barycentric subdivision of the boundary of a $(k-1)$-simplex, and the containment relations among them are described by a new poset on the set of partitions of $k$. We compute the $h$-vectors of these complexes and determine the number of vertices of $T_{k,q}$ whose links are the same (correspond to the same partition). The combinatorial type of the link of an $(s-1)$-dimensional face of $T_{k,q}$ corresponds to a partition $(λ_1,λ_2,\ldots,λ_s)$ of $k$ into $s$ parts, together with additional partitions of each $λ_i$. We also enumerate the combinatorial types of all $m$-dimensional complexes that arise as the links in edgewise triangulations. A new permutation statistic, \textit{the faithful initial part}, is introduced and used to describe the star cluster of a facet of $T_{k,q}$. By examining a specific shelling of this star cluster, we prove that the $i$-th entry of its $h$-vector counts the number of permutations of $[k]$ with exactly $i$ descents, taking into account the faithful initial part as the multiplicity. Finally, we describe a concrete shelling order for $T_{k,q}$, give a combinatorial interpretation of its $h$-vector, and derive an explicit formula for it.

On a conjecture concerning the $r$-Euler-Mahonian statistic on permutations
A pair $(\mathrm{st_1}, \mathrm{st_2})$ of permutation statistics is said to be $r$-Euler-Mahonian if $(\mathrm{st_1}, \mathrm{st_2})$ and $( \mathrm{rdes}$, $\mathrm{rmaj})$ are equidistributed over the set $\mathfrak{S}_{n}$ of all permutations of $\{1,2,\ldots, n\}$, where $\mathrm{rdes}$ denotes the $r$-descent number and $\mathrm{rmaj}$ denotes the $r$-major index introduced by Rawlings. The main objective of this paper is to prove that $(\mathrm{exc}_r, \mathrm{den}_r)$ and $( \mathrm{rdes}$, $\mathrm{rmaj})$ are equidistributed over $\mathfrak{S}_{n}$, thereby confirming a recent conjecture posed by Liu. When $r=1$, the result recovers the equidistribution of $(\mathrm{des}, \mathrm{maj})$ and $(\mathrm{exc}, \mathrm{den})$, which was first conjectured by Denert and proved by Foata and Zeilberger.
Coloured shuffle compatibility, Hadamard products, and ask zeta functions
We devise an explicit method for computing combinatorial formulae for Hadamard products of certain rational generating functions. The latter arise naturally when studying so-called ask zeta functions of direct sums of modules of matrices or class- and orbit-counting zeta functions of direct products of nilpotent groups. Our method relies on shuffle compatibility of coloured permutation statistics and coloured quasisymmetric functions, extending recent work of Gessel and Zhuang.

Pattern containment in random permutations
This paper studies permutation statistics that count occurrences of patterns. Their expected values on a product of $t$ permutations chosen randomly from $Γ\subseteq S_{n}$, where $Γ$ is a union of conjugacy classes, are considered. Hultman has described a method for computing such an expected value, denoted $\mathbb{E}_Γ(s,t)$, of a statistic $s$, when $Γ$ is a union of conjugacy classes of $S_{n}$. The only prerequisite is that the mean of $s$ over the conjugacy classes is written as a linear combination of irreducible characters of $S_{n}$. Therefore, the main focus of this article is to express the means of pattern-counting statistics as such linear combinations. A procedure for calculating such expressions for statistics counting occurrences of classical and vincular patterns of length 3 is developed, and is then used to calculate all these expressions. The results can be used to compute $\mathbb{E}_Γ(s,t)$ for all the above statistics, and for all functions on $S_{n}$ that are linear combinations of them.
Cyclic sieving on permutations -- an analysis of maps and statistics in the FindStat database
We perform a systematic study of permutation statistics and bijective maps on permutations using SageMath to search the FindStat combinatorial statistics database to identify apparent instances of the cyclic sieving phenomenon (CSP). Cyclic sieving occurs on a set of objects, a statistic, and a map of order $n$ when the evaluation of the statistic generating function at the $d$th power of the primitive $n$th root of unity equals the number of fixed points under the $d$th power of the map. Of the apparent instances found in our experiment, we prove 34 new instances of the CSP and conjecture three more. Our results are organized largely by orbit structure, proving instances of the CSP for involutions with $2^{n-1}$ fixed points and $2^{\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor}$ fixed points, as well as maps whose orbits all have the same size. The FindStat maps which exhibit the CSP include a map constructed by Corteel (using a bijection of Foata and Zeilberger) to swap the number of nestings and crossings, the invert Laguerre heap map, a map of Alexandersson and Kebede designed to preserve right-to-left minima, conjugation by the long cycle, as well as reverse, complement, rotation, Lehmer code rotation, and toric promotion. Our results combined with those of [Elder, Lafrenière, McNicholas, Striker, Welch 2023] show that, contrary to common expectations, actions that exhibit homomesy are not necessarily the best candidates for the CSP, and vice versa.

A bump statistic on permutations resulting from the Robinson-Schensted correspondence
Published in Ann. Comb. (2024) • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we investigate a permutation statistic that was independently introduced by Romik in 2005. This statistic counts the number of bumps that occur during the execution of the Robinson-Schensted procedure when applied to a given permutation. We provide several interpretations of this bump statistic that include the tableaux shape and also as an extremal problem concerning permutations and increasing subsequences. Several aspects of this bump statistic are investigated from both structural and enumerative viewpoints.

Signed Poset Polytopes
Stanley introduced in 1986 the order polytope and the chain polytope for a given finite poset. These polytopes contain much information about the poset and have given rise to important examples in polyhedral geometry. In 1993, Reiner introduced signed posets as natural type-B analogues of posets. We define and study signed order and chain polytopes. Our results include convex-hull and halfspace descriptions, unimodular triangulations, Ehrhart $h^*$-polynomials and their relations to signed permutation statistics, and a Gorenstein characterization of signed order and chain polytopes.

Joint distributions of statistics over permutations avoiding two patterns of length 3
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 26:1, Permutation Patterns 2023, Special issues (November 4, 2024) dmtcs:12517 • View PublicationBIB
Finding distributions of permutation statistics over pattern-avoiding classes of permutations attracted much attention in the literature. In particular, Bukata et al. found distributions of ascents and descents on permutations avoiding any two patterns of length 3. In this paper, we generalize these results in two different ways: we find explicit formulas for the joint distribution of six statistics (asc, des, lrmax, lrmin, rlmax, rlmin), and also explicit formulas for the joint distribution of four statistics (asc, des, MNA, MND) on these permutations in all cases. The latter result also extends the recent studies by Kitaev and Zhang of the statistics MNA and MND (related to non-overlapping occurrences of ascents and descents) on stack-sortable permutations. All multivariate generating functions in our paper are rational, and we provide combinatorial proofs of five equidistribution results that can be derived from the generating functions.

Explicit formulas for permutation pattern character polynomials
Given permutations $π\in S_n$ and $σ\in S_k$, let $N_σ(π)$ denote the number of occurrences of $σ$ in $π$. While pattern avoidance and the distribution of pattern occurrences in permutations have been extensively studied, their interactions with the group structure on $S_n$ are still poorly understood. Gaetz and Ryba showed that the expected value of $χ^{λ[n]}(π)N_σ(π)$ for $π\in S_n$ is given by a polynomial $a_σ^λ(n)$. More recently, Gaetz and Pierson derived explicit formulas for $a_{\mathrm{id}_k}^λ(n)$ when $\lvertλ\rvert \le 2$, which led them to conjecture that the polynomials $a_{\mathrm{id}_k}^λ(n)$ are real-rooted and nonnegative for $n \ge k$. We show that for all partitions $λ$, the polynomials $a_{\mathrm{id}_k}^λ(n)$ admit explicit closed forms in $n$ and $k$. These formulas allow us to exhibit counterexamples to Gaetz and Pierson's real-rootedness conjecture as well as to prove special cases of their nonnegativity conjecture. Lastly, we note that our results imply that the expected value of $f \cdot N_{\mathrm{id}_k}$ on $S_n$ admits a closed form whenever $f$ is a permutation statistic expressible as a polynomial in the functions $m_j \colon \bigsqcup_{n \ge 0} S_n \to \mathbb{Z}$ which count $j$-cycles in their inputs.

Joint extremes of inversions and descents of random permutations
We provide asymptotic theory for the joint distribution of $X_{\mathrm{inv}}$ and $X_{\mathrm{des}}$, the numbers of inversions and descents of random permutations. Recently, Dörr & Kahle (2022) proved that $X_{\mathrm{inv}}$, respectively, $X_{\mathrm{des}}$ is in the maximum domain of attraction of the Gumbel distribution. To tackle the dependency between these two permutation statistics, we use Hájek projections and a suitable quantitative Gaussian approximation. We show that $(X_{\mathrm{inv}}, X_{\mathrm{des}})$ is in the maximum domain of attraction of the two-dimensional Gumbel distribution with independent margins. This result can be stated in the broader combinatorial framework of finite Coxeter groups, on which our method also yields the central limit theorem for $(X_{\mathrm{inv}}, X_{\mathrm{des}})$ and various other permutation statistics as a novel contribution. In particular, signed permutation groups with random biased signs and products of classical Weyl groups are investigated.

On the $\operatorname{rix}$ statistic and valley-hopping
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 26:2, Combinatorics (March 5, 2024) dmtcs:11553 • View PublicationBIB
This paper studies the relationship between the modified Foata$\unicode{x2013}$Strehl action (a.k.a. valley-hopping)$\unicode{x2014}$a group action on permutations used to demonstrate the $γ$-positivity of the Eulerian polynomials$\unicode{x2014}$and the number of rixed points $\operatorname{rix}$$\unicode{x2014}$a recursively-defined permutation statistic introduced by Lin in the context of an equidistribution problem. We give a linear-time iterative algorithm for computing the set of rixed points, and prove that the $\operatorname{rix}$ statistic is homomesic under valley-hopping. We also demonstrate that a bijection $Φ$ introduced by Lin and Zeng in the study of the $\operatorname{rix}$ statistic sends orbits of the valley-hopping action to orbits of a cyclic version of valley-hopping, which implies that the number of fixed points $\operatorname{fix}$ is homomesic under cyclic valley-hopping.

Two-sided permutation statistics via symmetric functions
Published in Forum Math. Sigma 12: e93, 37 pp., 2024 • Search Publication
Given a permutation statistic $\operatorname{st}$, define its inverse statistic $\operatorname{ist}$ by $\operatorname{ist}(π):=\operatorname{st}(π^{-1})$. We give a general approach, based on the theory of symmetric functions, for finding the joint distribution of $\operatorname{st}_{1}$ and $\operatorname{st}_{2}$ whenever $\operatorname{st}_{1}$ and $\operatorname{st}_{2}$ are descent statistics: permutation statistics that depend only on the descent composition. We apply this method to a number of descent statistics, including the descent number, the peak number, the left peak number, the number of up-down runs, and the major index. Perhaps surprisingly, in many cases the polynomial giving the joint distribution of $\operatorname{st}_{1}$ and $\operatorname{ist}_{2}$ can be expressed as a simple sum involving products of the polynomials giving the (individual) distributions of $\operatorname{st}_{1}$ and $\operatorname{st}_{2}$. Our work leads to a rederivation of Stanley's generating function for doubly alternating permutations, as well as several conjectures concerning real-rootedness and $γ$-positivity.

Increasing subsequences, matrix loci, and Viennot shadows
Let $\mathbf{x}_{n \times n}$ be an $n \times n$ matrix of variables and let $\mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_{n \times n}]$ be the polynomial ring in these variables over a field $\mathbb{F}$. We study the ideal $I_n \subseteq \mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_{n \times n}]$ generated by all row and column variable sums and all products of two variables drawn from the same row or column. We show that the quotient $\mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_{n \times n}]/I_n$ admits a standard monomial basis determined by Viennot's shadow line avatar of the Schensted correspondence. As a corollary, the Hilbert series of $\mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_{n \times n}]/I_n$ is the generating function of permutations in $\mathfrak{S}_n$ by the length of their longest increasing subsequence. Along the way, we describe a `shadow junta' basis of the vector space of $k$-local permutation statistics. We also calculate the structure of $\mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_{n \times n}]/I_n$ as a graded $\mathfrak{S}_n \times \mathfrak{S}_n$-module.
Moments of Colored Permutation Statistics on Conjugacy Classes
Published in Ann. Comb. (2025) • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we consider the moments of statistics on conjugacy classes of the colored permutation groups $\mathfrak{S}_{n,r}=\mathbb{Z}_r\wr \mathfrak{S}_n$. We first show that any fixed moment coincides on all conjugacy classes where all cycles have sufficiently long length. Additionally, for permutation statistics that can be realized via a process we call symmetric extensions, these moments are polynomials in $n$. Finally, for the descent statistic on the hyperoctahedral group $B_n\cong \mathfrak{S}_{n,2}$, we show that its distribution on conjugacy classes without short cycles satisfies a central limit theorem. Our results build on and generalize previous work of Fulman (\textit{J. Comb. Theory Ser. A.}, 1998), Hamaker and Rhoades (arXiv, 2022), and Campion Loth, Levet, Liu, Stucky, Sundaram, and Yin (arXiv, 2023). In particular, our techniques utilize the combinatorial framework introduced by Campion Loth, Levet, Liu, Stucky, Sundaram, and Yin.

Stirling-Euler-Mahonian Triples of Permutation Statistics
Published in Journal of Combinatorics, Vol. 16, Issue 1 (2025), pp. 91-111 • View PublicationBIB
Two well-known distributions in the study of permutation statistics are the Mahonian and Eulerian distributions. Mahonian statistics include the major index MAJ and the number of inversions INV, while examples of Eulerian statistics are the number of descents des and excedances exc. Also of interest are pairs of permutation statistics that have the same joint distribution as (des, MAJ); these are called Euler Mahonian pairs. In this paper we define a Stirling statistic as one that is equidistributed with the number of right-to-left minima rlmin and a Stirling- Euler-Mahonian triple as a triple of statistics with the same trivariate distribution as (rlmin, des, MAJ). We prove that several triples involving well-known statistics are Stirling-Euler-Mahonian. A general bijective technique is demonstrated for any Mahonian statistic that has a permutation code. Finally, we note several properties of Stirling-Euler-Mahonian triples that follow from earlier results.
Permutation Statistics in Conjugacy Classes of the Symmetric Group
We introduce the notion of a weighted inversion statistic on the symmetric group, and examine its distribution on each conjugacy class. Our work generalizes the study of several common permutation statistics, including the number of inversions, the number of descents, the major index, and the number of excedances. As a consequence, we obtain explicit formulas for the first moments of several statistics by conjugacy class. We also show that when the cycle lengths are sufficiently large, the higher moments of arbitrary permutation statistics are independent of the conjugacy class. Fulman (J. Comb. Theory Ser. A., 1998) previously established this result for major index and descents. We obtain these results, in part, by generalizing the techniques of Fulman (ibid.), and introducing the notion of permutation constraints. For permutation statistics that can be realized via symmetric constraints, we show that each moment is a polynomial in the degree of the symmetric group.

Cyclic shuffle-compatibility via cyclic shuffle algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
A permutation statistic $\operatorname{st}$ is said to be shuffle-compatible if the distribution of $\operatorname{st}$ over the set of shuffles of two disjoint permutations $π$ and $σ$ depends only on $\operatorname{st}π$, $\operatorname{st}σ$, and the lengths of $π$ and $σ$. Shuffle-compatibility is implicit in Stanley's early work on $P$-partitions, and was first explicitly studied by Gessel and Zhuang, who developed an algebraic framework for shuffle-compatibility centered around their notion of the shuffle algebra of a shuffle-compatible statistic. For a family of statistics called descent statistics, these shuffle algebras are isomorphic to quotients of the algebra of quasisymmetric functions. Recently, Domagalski, Liang, Minnich, Sagan, Schmidt, and Sietsema defined a version of shuffle-compatibility for statistics on cyclic permutations, and studied cyclic shuffle-compatibility through purely combinatorial means. In this paper, we define the cyclic shuffle algebra of a cyclic shuffle-compatible statistic, and develop an algebraic framework for cyclic shuffle-compatibility in which the role of quasisymmetric functions is replaced by the cyclic quasisymmetric functions recently introduced by Adin, Gessel, Reiner, and Roichman. We use our theory to provide explicit descriptions for the cyclic shuffle algebras of various cyclic permutation statistics, which in turn gives algebraic proofs for their cyclic shuffle-compatibility.
