Mallows permutation models with $L^1$ and $L^2$ distances I: hit and run algorithms and mixing times
Mallows permutation model, introduced by Mallows in statistical ranking theory, is a class of non-uniform probability measures on the symmetric group $S_n$. The model depends on a distance metric $d(σ,τ)$ on $S_n$, which can be chosen from a host of metrics on permutations. In this paper, we focus on Mallows permutation models with $L^1$ and $L^2$ distances, respectively known in the statistics literature as Spearman's footrule and Spearman's rank correlation.
Unlike most of the random permutation models that have been analyzed in the literature, Mallows permutation models with $L^1$ and $L^2$ distances do not have an explicit expression for their normalizing constants. This poses challenges to the task of sampling from these Mallows models. In this paper, we consider hit and run algorithms for sampling from both models. Hit and run algorithms are a unifying class of Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithms including the celebrated Swendsen-Wang and data augmentation algorithms. For both models, we show order $\log{n}$ mixing time upper bounds for the hit and run algorithms. This demonstrates much faster mixing of the hit and run algorithms compared to local MCMC algorithms such as the Metropolis algorithm. The proof of the results on mixing times is based on the path coupling technique, for which a novel coupling for permutations with one-sided restrictions is involved.
Extensions of the hit and run algorithms to weighted versions of the above models, a two-parameter permutation model that involves the $L^1$ distance and Cayley distance, and lattice permutation models in dimensions greater than or equal to $2$ are also discussed. The order $\log{n}$ mixing time upper bound pertains to the two-parameter permutation model.

Baxter permutations originally arose in studying common fixed points of two commuting continuous functions. In 2015, Dilks proposed a conjectured bijection between Baxter permutations and non-intersecting triples of lattice paths in terms of inverse descent bottoms, descent positions and inverse descent tops. We prove this bijectivity conjecture by investigating its connection with the Françon--Viennot bijection. As a result, we obtain a permutation interpretation of the $(t,q)$-analog of the Baxter numbers $$ \frac{1}{{n+1\brack 1}_q{n+1\brack 2}_q}\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}q^{3{k+1\choose2}}{n+1\brack k}_q{n+1\brack k+1}_q{n+1\brack k+2}_qt^k, $$ where ${n\brack k}_q$ denote the $q$-binomial coefficients.

In this paper, we investigate the randomness properties of sequences in $\mathbb{Z}_v$ derived from permutations in $\mathbb{Z}_{p}^*$ using the remainder function modulo $v$, where $p$ is a prime integer. Motivated by earlier studies with a cryptographic focus we compare sequences constructed from the ElGamal function $x \to g^x$ for $x\in\mathbb{Z}_{>0}$ and $g$ a primitive element of $\mathbb{Z}_{p}^*$, to sequences constructed from random permutations of $\mathbb{Z}_{p}^*$. We prove that sequences obtained from ElGamal have maximal period and behave similarly to random permutations with respect to the balance and run properties of Golomb's postulates for pseudo-random sequences. Additionally we show that they behave similarly to random permutations for the tuple balance property. This requires some significant work determining properties of random balanced periodic sequences. In general, for these properties and excepting for very unlikely events, the ElGamal sequences behave the same as random balanced sequences.

We study the properties of the uncountable set of Stewart words. These are Toeplitz words specified by infinite sequences of Toeplitz patterns of the form $αβγ$, where $α,β,γ$ is any permutation of the symbols 0,1,?. We determine the critical exponent of the Stewart words, prove that they avoid the pattern $xxyyxx$, find all factors that are palindromes, and determine their subword complexity. An interesting aspect of our work is that we use automata-theoretic methods and a decision procedure for automata to carry out the proofs.
Optimal Gap Sequences in Shellsort for $n\leq16$ Elements
Optimal gap sequences in Shellsort, defined as gap sequences having the minimised maximum number of comparisons for a fixed number of pairwise distinct elements, are found by minimax search in reduced permutational spaces, namely Bad $(s,1)$-sorted permutations. Exact optimal gap sequences in Shellsort for $n\leq16$ pairwise distinct elements are established, and the best known gap sequences for $17\leq n\leq 30$ are listed with conjectures made. It notably discovers some optimal gap sequences consist of increments larger than the half of the total number of the elements to sort.
Exponential decay of intersection volume with applications on list-decodability and Gilbert-Varshamov type bound

We give some natural sufficient conditions for balls in a metric space to have small intersection. Roughly speaking, this happens when the metric space is (i) expanding and (ii) well-spread, and (iii) a certain random variable on the boundary of a ball has a small tail. As applications, we show that the volume of intersection of balls in Hamming, Johnson spaces and symmetric groups decay exponentially as their centers drift apart. To verify condition (iii), we prove some large deviation inequalities `on a slice' for functions with Lipschitz conditions.
We then use these estimates on intersection volumes to
$\bullet$ obtain a sharp lower bound on list-decodability of random $q$-ary codes, confirming a conjecture of Li and Wootters; and
$\bullet$ improve the classical bound of Levenshtein from 1971 on constant weight codes by a factor linear in dimension, resolving a problem raised by Jiang and Vardy.
Our probabilistic point of view also offers a unified framework to obtain improvements on other Gilbert--Varshamov type bounds, giving conceptually simple and calculation-free proofs for $q$-ary codes, permutation codes, and spherical codes. Another consequence is a counting result on the number of codes, showing ampleness of large codes.
Stratifying the space of barcodes using Coxeter complexes

We use tools from geometric group theory to produce a stratification of the space $\mathcal{B}_n$ of barcodes with $n$ bars. The top-dimensional strata are indexed by permutations associated to barcodes as defined by Kanari, Garin and Hess. More generally, the strata correspond to marked double cosets of parabolic subgroups of the symmetric group $Sym_n$. This subdivides $\mathcal{B}_n$ into regions that consist of barcodes with the same averages and standard deviations of birth and death times and the same permutation type. We obtain coordinates that form a new invariant of barcodes, extending the one of Kanari-Garin-Hess. This description also gives rise to metrics on $\mathcal{B}_n$ that coincide with modified versions of the bottleneck and Wasserstein metrics.
A central limit theorem for cycles of Mallows permutations
Fix $q\neq 1$, and sample $w\in S_n$ from the Mallows measure. We study the distribution of $C_i(w)$, the number of $i$-cycles, as $n$ grows large. When $q<1$, they are jointly Gaussian, and this more or less follows from known ideas, but the regime $q>1$ behaves quite differently. In particular, we show that the even cycles $C_{2i}(w)$ have a mean and variance of order $n$, and jointly converge to Gaussian random variables, while the odd cycles $C_{2i+1}(w)$ have a bounded mean and variance, and converge to $C_{2i+1}(w^{even})$ or $C_{2i+1}(w^{odd})$ for some explicit random permutations $w^{even}$ and $w^{odd}$, depending on whether $n$ is even or odd. An extension to a larger class of functions is also given. The proof utilizes a two-sided stationary regenerative process associated to Mallows permutations constructed by Gnedin and Olshanski, extending the ideas of Basu and Bhatnagar.
Symmetric Functions and Rectangular Catalan Combinatorics
Symmetric functions provide one of the most efficient tools for combinatorial enumeration, in the context of objects that may be acted upon by permutations. Only assuming a basic knowledge of linear algebra, we introduce and describe the classical toolbox of symmetric functions, and give many examples of their uses. In particular, we present how classical formulas of enumerative combinatorics afford a natural generalization in terms of symmetric functions. We then rapidly present Macdonald symmetric functions and associated operators, to go on with the description of their relations to rectangular Catalan combinatorics. We also discuss the link with a realization of the elliptic Hall algebra, as an algebra of operators on symmetric functions.

We propose a new method of constructing q-ary propelinear perfect codes. The approach utilizes permutations of the fixed length q-ary vectors that arise from the automorphisms of the regular subgroups of the affine group. For any prime q it is shown that the new class contains an infinite series of q-ary propelinear perfect codes of varying ranks of growing length.

In a classical-type flag variety, we consider a Schubert variety associated to a vexillary (signed) permutation, and establish a combinatorial formula for the Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity of a point on such a Schubert variety. The formula is expressed in terms of excited Young diagrams, and extends results for Grassmannians due to Krattenthaler, Lakshmibai-Raghavan-Sankaran, and for the maximal isotropic (symplectic and orthogonal) Grassmannians to Ghorpade-Raghavan, Raghavan-Upadhyay, Kreiman, and Ikeda-Naruse. We also provide a new proof of a theorem of Li-Yong in the type A vexillary case. The main ingredient is an isomorphism between certain neighborhoods of fixed points, known as Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties, which, in turn, relies on a direct sum embedding previously used by Anderson-Fulton to relate vexillary loci to Grassmannian loci.
Fixed points, descents, and inversions in parabolic double cosets of the symmetric group
We consider statistics on permutations chosen uniformly at random from fixed parabolic double cosets of the symmetric group. We show that the distribution of fixed points is asymptotically Poisson and establish central limit theorems for the distribution of descents and inversions. Our proofs use Stein's method with size-bias coupling and dependency graphs, which also gives convergence rates for our distributional approximations. As applications of our size-bias coupling and dependency graph constructions, we obtain concentration of measure results on the number of fixed points, descents, and inversions.
On permutation quadrinomials from Niho exponents in characteristic two
In a recent paper Zheng et al. characterized the coefficients of $ f(x) = x + a_1x^{s_1(2m-1)+1} + a_2x^{s_2(2m-1)+1} + a_3x^{s_3(2m-1)+1} $ over $\mathbb{ F}_2^{2m}$ that lead $ f(x) $ to be a permutation of $\mathbb{ F}_2^{2m}$ for $ (s_1, s_2, s_3) = (\frac{1}{4},1, \frac{3}{4})$. They left open the question whether those conditions were also necessary. In this paper we give a positive answer to that question.
Expected value of letters of permutations with a given number of $k$-cycles
In this paper, we study permutations $π\in S_n$ with exactly $m$ transpositions. In particular, we are interested in the expected value of $π(1)$ when such permutations are chosen uniformly at random. When $n$ is even, this expected value is approximated closely by $(n+1)/2$, with an error term that is related to the number isometries of the $(n/2-m)$-dimensional hypercube that move every face. Furthermore, when $k \mid n$, this construction generalizes to allow us to compute the expected value of $π(1)$ for permutations with exactly $m$ $k$-cycles. In this case, the expected value has an error term which is related instead to the number derangements of the generalized symmetric group $S(k,n/k-m)$.
When $k$ does not divide $n$, the expected value of $π(1)$ is precisely $(n+1)/2$. Indirectly, this suggests the existence of a reversible algorithm to insert a letter into a permutation which preserves the number of $k$-cycles, which we construct.
Complexity of Paired Domination in AT-free and Planar Graphs

For a graph $G=(V,E)$, a subset $D$ of vertex set $V$, is a dominating set of $G$ if every vertex not in $D$ is adjacent to atleast one vertex of $D$. A dominating set $D$ of a graph $G$ with no isolated vertices is called a paired dominating set (PD-set), if $G[D]$, the subgraph induced by $D$ in $G$ has a perfect matching. The Min-PD problem requires to compute a PD-set of minimum cardinality. The decision version of the Min-PD problem remains NP-complete even when $G$ belongs to restricted graph classes such as bipartite graphs, chordal graphs etc. On the positive side, the problem is efficiently solvable for many graph classes including intervals graphs, strongly chordal graphs, permutation graphs etc. In this paper, we study the complexity of the problem in AT-free graphs and planar graph. The class of AT-free graphs contains cocomparability graphs, permutation graphs, trapezoid graphs, and interval graphs as subclasses. We propose a polynomial-time algorithm to compute a minimum PD-set in AT-free graphs. In addition, we also present a linear-time $2$-approximation algorithm for the problem in AT-free graphs. Further, we prove that the decision version of the problem is NP-complete for planar graphs, which answers an open question asked by Lin et al. (in Theor. Comput. Sci., $591 (2015): 99-105$ and Algorithmica, $ 82 (2020) :2809-2840$).
The height of record-biased trees

Given a permutation $σ$, its corresponding binary search tree is obtained by recursively inserting the values $σ(1),\ldots,σ(n)$ into a binary tree so that the label of each node is larger than the labels of its left subtree and smaller than the labels of its right subtree. In 1986, Devroye proved that the height of such trees when $σ$ is a random uniform permutation is of order $(c^*+o_\mathbb{P}(1))\log n$ as $n$ tends to infinity, where $c^*$ is the only solution to $c\log(2e/c)=1$ with $c\geq2$. In this paper, we study the height of binary search trees drawn from the record-biased model of permutations, introduced by Auger, Bouvel, Nicaud, and Pivoteau in 2016. The record-biased distribution is the probability measure on the set of permutations whose weight is proportional to $θ^{\mathrm{record}(σ)}$, where $\mathrm{record}(σ)=|\{i\in[n]:\forall j<i,σ(i)>σ(j)\}|$. We show that the height of a binary search tree built from a record-biased permutation of size $n$ with parameter $θ$ is of order $(1+o_\mathbb{P}(1))\max\{c^*\log n,\,θ\log(1+n/θ)\}$, hence giving a full characterization of the first order asymptotic behaviour of the height of such trees.
Sequences of symmetry groups of infinite words

In this paper we introduce a new notion of a sequence of symmetry groups of an infinite word. Given a subgroup $G_n$ of the symmetric group $S_n$, it acts on the set of finite words of length $n$ by permutation. We associate to an infinite word $w$ a sequence $(G_n(w))_{n\geq 1}$ of its symmetry groups: For each $n$, a symmetry group of $w$ is a subgroup $G_n(w)$ of the symmetric group $S_n$ such that $g(v)$ is a factor of $w$ for each permutation $g \in G_n(w)$ and each factor $v$ of length $n$ of $w$. We study general properties of the symmetry groups of infinite words and characterize the sequences of symmetry groups of several families of infinite words. We show that for each subgroup $G$ of $S_n$ there exists an infinite word $w$ with $G_n(w)=G$. On the other hand, the structure of possible sequences $(G_n(w))_{n\geq 1}$ is quite restrictive: we show that they cannot contain for each order $n$ certain cycles, transpositions and some other permutations. The sequences of symmetry groups can also characterize a generalized periodicity property. We prove that symmetry groups of Sturmian words and more generally Arnoux-Rauzy words are of order two for large enough $n$; on the other hand, symmetry groups of certain Toeplitz words have exponential growth.
Permutations of counters on a table
We consider a game in which a blindfolded player attempts to set $n$ counters lying on the vertices of a rotating regular $n$-gon table simultaneously to $0$. When the counters count$\pmod{m}$ we simplify the argument of Bar Yehuda, Etzion, and Moran (1993) showing that the player can win if and only if $n = 1$, $m = 1$, or $(n, m) = (p^a, p^b)$ for some prime $p$ and $a, b \in \mathbb{N}$. We broadly generalize the result to the setting where the counters can be permuted by any element of a subset of the symmetric group $S \subseteq S_n$, with the original formulation corresponding to $S = \mathbb{Z}_n$ (rotations of the table).
Hurwitz numbers for reflection groups I: Generatingfunctionology

The classical Hurwitz numbers count the fixed-length transitive transposition factorizations of a permutation, with a remarkable product formula for the case of minimum length (genus $0$). We study the analogue of these numbers for reflection groups with the following generalization of transitivity: say that a reflection factorization of an element in a reflection group $W$ is full if the factors generate the whole group $W$. We compute the generating function for full factorizations of arbitrary length for an arbitrary element in a group in the combinatorial family $G(m, p, n)$ of complex reflection groups in terms of the generating functions of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ and the cyclic group of order $m/p$. As a corollary, we obtain leading-term formulas which count minimum-length full reflection factorizations of an arbitrary element in $G(m,p,n)$ in terms of the Hurwitz numbers of genus $0$ and $1$ and number-theoretic functions. We also study the structural properties of such generating functions for any complex reflection group; in particular, we show via representation-theoretic methods that they can by expressed as finite sums of exponentials of the variable.
RSK tableaux and box-ball systems

A box-ball system is a discrete dynamical system whose dynamics come from the balls jumping according to certain rules. A permutation on n objects gives a box-ball system state by assigning its one-line notation to n consecutive boxes. After a finite number of steps, a box-ball system will reach a steady state. From any steady state, we can construct a tableau called the soliton decomposition of the box-ball system. We prove that if the soliton decomposition of a permutation w is a standard tableau or if its shape coincides with the Robinson-Schensted (RS) partition of w, then the soliton decomposition of w and the RS insertion tableau of w are equal. We also use row reading words, Knuth moves, RS recording tableaux, and a localized version of Greene's theorem (proven recently by Lewis, Lyu, Pylyavskyy, and Sen) to study various properties of a box-ball system.
