We prove that if $g(x,y)$ is a polynomial of constant degree $d$ that $y_2-y_1$ does not divide $g(x_1,y_1)-g(x_2,y_2)$, then for any finite set $A \subset \mathbb{R}$ \[ |X| \gg_d |A|^2, \quad \text{where} \ X:=\left\{\frac{g(a_1,b_1)-g(a_2,b_2)}{b_2-b_1} :\, a_1,a_2,b_1,b_2 \in A \right\}. \] We will see this bound is also tight for some polynomial $g(x,y)$.

Denote by $u(n)$ the largest principal specialization of the Schubert polynomial: $
u(n) := \max_{w \in S_n} \mathfrak{S}_w(1,\ldots,1) $ Stanley conjectured in [arXiv:1704.00851] that there is a limit $\lim_{n\to \infty} \, \frac{1}{n^2} \log u(n), $ and asked for a limiting description of permutations achieving the maximum $u(n)$. Merzon and Smirnov conjectured in [arXiv:1410.6857] that this maximum is achieved on layered permutations. We resolve both Stanley's problems restricted to layered permutations.

Settling Kahn's conjecture (2001), we prove the following upper bound on the number $i(G)$ of independent sets in a graph $G$ without isolated vertices: \[ i(G) \le \prod_{uv \in E(G)} i(K_{d_u,d_v})^{1/(d_u d_v)}, \] where $d_u$ is the degree of vertex $u$ in $G$. Equality occurs when $G$ is a disjoint union of complete bipartite graphs. The inequality was previously proved for regular graphs by Kahn and Zhao.
We also prove an analogous tight lower bound: \[ i(G) \ge \prod_{v \in V(G)} i(K_{d_v+1})^{1/(d_v + 1)}, \] where equality occurs for $G$ a disjoint union of cliques. More generally, we prove bounds on the weighted versions of these quantities, i.e., the independent set polynomial, or equivalently the partition function of the hard-core model with a given fugacity on a graph.
Asymptotic results for Representation Theory
Representation theory of finite groups portrays a marvelous crossroad of group theory, algebraic combinatorics, and probability. In particular the Plancherel measure is a probability that arises naturally from representation theory, and in this thesis we consider three ramifications of asymptotic questions for random Plancherel distributed representations. First we recall irreducible characters of the symmetric group, which are indexed by integer partitions. We focus on the so called 'dual approach', in which the partition indexing a character is now considered to be the variable. We extend a famous result of Kerov on the asymptotic of Plancherel distributed characters by studying partial trace and partial sum of a representation matrix. We decompose each of these objects into a main term and a remainder, and in each case we prove a central limit theorem for the main term. We apply these results to prove a law of large numbers for the partial sum. In the second part we consider projective representations of the symmetric group by converting a multirectangular approach developed by Stanley for the classical case. In particular, we present a positivity conjecture for the coefficients of the renormalized projective character, written as a polynomial in a new set of coordinates. We prove the positivity for the leading term of the polynomial. In the last part of the thesis we recall the theory of supercharacters, which is an alternative tool to representation theory when the classical approach proves to be intractable. We show that a generalization of the Plancherel measure, called the superplancherel measure, arises naturally. We focus on a particular supercharacter theory for the upper unitriangular group in which supercharacters are indexed by set partitions. We prove a limit shape result for a random set partition according to this distribution.
Beating Fredman-Komlós for perfect $k$-hashing

We say a subset $C \subseteq \{1,2,\dots,k\}^n$ is a $k$-hash code (also called $k$-separated) if for every subset of $k$ codewords from $C$, there exists a coordinate where all these codewords have distinct values. Understanding the largest possible rate (in bits), defined as $(\log_2 |C|)/n$, of a $k$-hash code is a classical problem. It arises in two equivalent contexts: (i) the smallest size possible for a perfect hash family that maps a universe of $N$ elements into $\{1,2,\dots,k\}$, and (ii) the zero-error capacity for decoding with lists of size less than $k$ for a certain combinatorial channel.
A general upper bound of $k!/k^{k-1}$ on the rate of a $k$-hash code (in the limit of large $n$) was obtained by Fredman and Komlós in 1984 for any $k \geq 4$. While better bounds have been obtained for $k=4$, their original bound has remained the best known for each $k \ge 5$. In this work, we obtain the first improvement to the Fredman-Komlós bound for every $k \ge 5$. While we get explicit (numerical) bounds for $k=5,6$, for larger $k$ we only show that the FK bound can be improved by a positive, but unspecified, amount. Under a conjecture on the optimum value of a certain polynomial optimization problem over the simplex, our methods allow an effective bound to be computed for every $k$.
The Cavender-Farris-Neyman Model with a Molecular Clock

We give a combinatorial description of the toric ideal of invariants of the Cavender-Farris-Neyman model with a molecular clock (CFN-MC) on a rooted binary phylogenetic tree and prove results about the polytope associated to this toric ideal. Key results about the polyhedral structure include that the number of vertices of this polytope is a Fibonacci number, the facets of the polytope can be described using the combinatorial "cluster" structure of the underlying rooted tree, and the volume is equal to an Euler zig-zag number. The toric ideal of invariants of the CFN-MC model has a quadratic Groebner basis with squarefree initial terms. Finally, we show that the Ehrhart polynomial of these polytopes, and therefore the Hilbert series of the ideals, depends only on the number of leaves of the underlying binary tree, and not on the topology of the tree itself. These results are analogous to classic results for the Cavender-Farris-Neyman model without a molecular clock. However, new techniques are required because the molecular clock assumption destroys the toric fiber product structure that governs group-based models without the molecular clock.

The purpose of this paper is twofold. Firstly, we generalize the notion of characteristic polynomials of hyperplane and toric arrangements to those of certain abelian Lie group arrangements. Secondly, we give two interpretations for the chromatic quasi-polynomials and their constituents through subspace and toric viewpoints.

We derive upper bounds for the potential energy of spherical designs of cardinality close to the Delsarte-Goethals-Seidel bound. These bounds are obtained by linear programming with the use of the Hermite interpolating polynomial of the potential function in suitable nodes. Numerical computations show that the results are quite close to certain lower energy bounds confirming that spherical designs are, in a sense, energy efficient. \end{abstract}
Neighborhood inclusions for minimal dominating sets enumeration: linear and polynomial delay algorithms in $P_7$-free and $P_8$-free chordal graphs
In [M. M. Kanté, V. Limouzy, A. Mary, and L. Nourine. On the enumeration of minimal dominating sets and related notions. SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, 28(4):1916-1929, 2014] the authors give an $O(n+m)$ delay algorithm based on neighborhood inclusions for the enumeration of minimal dominating sets in split and $P_6$-free chordal graphs. In this paper, we investigate generalizations of this technique to $P_k$-free chordal graphs for larger integers $k$. In particular, we give $O(n+m)$ and $O(n^3\cdot m)$ delays algorithms in the classes of $P_7$-free and $P_8$-free chordal graphs. As for $P_k$-free chordal graphs for $k\geq 9$, we give evidence that such a technique is inefficient as a key step of the algorithm, namely the irredundant extension problem, becomes NP-complete.
Criticality, The List Color Function, and List Coloring the Cartesian Product of Graphs

We introduce a notion of color-criticality in the context of chromatic-choosability. We define a graph $G$ to be strong $k$-chromatic-choosable if $χ(G) = k$ and every $(k-1)$-assignment for which $G$ is not list-colorable has the property that the lists are the same for all vertices. That is the usual coloring is, in some sense, the obstacle to list-coloring. We prove basic properties of strongly chromatic-choosable graphs such as chromatic-choosability and vertex-criticality, and we construct infinite families of strongly chromatic-choosable graphs. We derive a sufficient condition for the existence of at least two list colorings of strongly chromatic-choosable graphs and use it to show that: if $M$ is a strong $k$-chromatic-choosable graph with $|E(M)| \leq |V(M)|(k-2)$ and $H$ is a graph that contains a Hamilton path, $w_1, w_2, \ldots, w_m$, such that $w_i$ has at most $ρ\geq 1$ neighbors among $w_1, \ldots, w_{i-1}$, then $χ_{\ell}(M \square H) \le k+ ρ- 1$. We show that this bound is sharp for all $ρ\ge 1$ by generalizing the theorem to apply to $H$ that are $(M,ρ)$-Cartesian accommodating which is a notion we define with the help of the list color function, $ P_{\ell}(G,k)$, the list analogue of the chromatic polynomial. We also use the list color function to determine the list chromatic number of certain star-like graphs: $χ_{\ell}(M \square K_{1,s}) =$ $k \; \text{if } s < P_{\ell}(M,k)$, or $k+1 \; \text{if } s \geq P_{\ell}(M,k)$, where $M$ is a strong $k$-chromatic-choosable graph. We show that $ P_{\ell}(M,k)$ equals $P(M,k)$, the chromatic polynomial, when $M$ is an odd cycle, complete graph, or the join of an odd cycle with a complete graph.

Let $\mathcal{S}$ be a commutative semigroup endowed with a binary associative operation $+$. An element $e$ of $\mathcal{S}$ is said to be idempotent if $e+e=e$. The {\sl Erdős-Burgess constant} of $\mathcal{S}$ is defined as the smallest $\ell\in \mathbb{N}\cup \{\infty\}$ such that any sequence $T$ of terms from $S$ and of length $\ell$ contains a nonempty subsequence the sum of whose terms is idempotent. Let $q$ be a prime power, and let $\F_q[x]$ be the polynomial ring over the finite field $\F_q$. Let $R=\F_q[x]\diagup K$ be a quotient ring of $\F_q[x]$ modulo any ideal $K$. We gave a sharp lower bound of the Erdős-Burgess constant of the multiplicative semigroup of the ring $R$, in particular, we determined the Erdős-Burgess constant in the case when $K$ is the power of a prime ideal or a product of pairwise distinct prime ideals in $\F_q[x]$.
Eulerian polynomials on segmented permutations
We define a generalization of the Eulerian polynomials and the Eulerian numbers by considering a descent statistic on segmented permutations coming from the study of 2-species exclusion processes and a change of basis in a Hopf algebra. We give some properties satisfied by these generalized Eulerian numbers. We also define a $q$-analog of these Eulerian polynomials which gives back usual Eulerian polynomials and ordered Bell polynomials for specific values of its variables. We also define a noncommutative analog living in the algebra of segmented compositions. It gives us an explicit generating function and some identities satisfied by the generalized Eulerian polynomials such as a Worpitzky-type relation.

Notions of rank abound in the literature on tensor decomposition. We prove that strength, recently introduced for homogeneous polynomials by Ananyan-Hochster in their proof of Stillman's conjecture and generalised here to other tensors, is universal among these ranks in the following sense: any non-trivial Zariski-closed condition on tensors that is functorial in the underlying vector space implies bounded strength. This generalises a theorem by Derksen-Eggermont-Snowden on cubic polynomials, as well as a theorem by Kazhdan-Ziegler which says that a polynomial all of whose directional derivatives have bounded strength must itself have bounded strength.

New series of $2^{2m}$-dimensional universally strongly perfect lattices $Λ_I $ and $Γ_J $ are constructed with $$2BW_{2m} ^{\#} \subseteq Γ_J \subseteq BW_{2m} \subseteq Λ_I \subseteq BW _{2m}^{\#} .$$ The lattices are found by restricting the spin representations of the automorphism group of the Barnes-Wall lattice to its subgroup ${\mathcal U}_m:={\mathcal C}_m (4^H_{\bf 1}) $. The group ${\mathcal U}_m$ is the Clifford-Weil group associated to the Hermitian self-dual codes over ${\bf F} _4$ containing ${\bf 1}$, so the ring of polynomial invariants of ${\mathcal U}_m$ is spanned by the genus-$m$ complete weight enumerators of such codes. This allows us to show that all the ${\mathcal U}_m$ invariant lattices are universally strongly perfect. We introduce a new construction, $D^{(cyc)}$ for chains of (extended) cyclic codes to obtain (bounds on) the minimum of the new lattices.

Let $V$ be a real vector space of dimension $n$ and let $M\subset V$ be a lattice. Let $P\subset V$ be an $n$-dimensional polytope with vertices in $M$, and let $\varphi\colon V\rightarrow \CC $ be a homogeneous polynomial function of degree $d$ (i.e., an element of $\Sym^{d} (V^{*})$). For $q\in \ZZ_{>0}$ and any face $F$ of $P$, let $D_{\varphi ,F} (q)$ be the sum of $\varphi$ over the lattice points in the dilate $qF$. We define a generating function $G_{\varphi}(q,y) \in \QQ [q] [y]$ packaging together the various $D_{\varphi ,F} (q)$, and show that it satisfies a functional equation that simultaneously generalizes Ehrhart--Macdonald reciprocity and the Dehn--Sommerville relations. When $P$ is a simple lattice polytope (i.e., each vertex meets $n$ edges), we show how $G_{\varphi}$ can be computed using an analogue of Brion--Vergne's Euler--Maclaurin summation formula.
The relation between Parabolic Hecke modules and $W$-graph ideal modules in Kazhdan-Lusztig theory
In 2011, Howlett and Nguyen \cite{r1} introduced the concept of a $W$-graph ideal $E_J$ in $\left ( W,\leqslant_{L} \right )$ with respect to $J$ (a subset of $S$), where $\leqslant _{L}$ is the left weak order on $W$. They proved that one can construct a $W$-graph from a given $W$-graph ideal by constructing a Hecke module structure on $E_J$, where the $W$-graph was introduced by Kazhdan and Lusztig in \cite{d1}.
In this paper, we give the relation between Hecke modules on $E_J$ and general Hecke algebras by considering the relation between Hecke modules on $E_J$ and parabolic Hecke modules. And inspired by Lusztig \cite{g3}, we show that the parabolic Hecke module is isomorphic to a left ideal of the Hecke algebra. Lastly, we give the relation between $R$-polynomials on $E_J$ and parabolic $R$-polynomials as an application of the main results.

With a main tool is signed graphs, we give a full description of the characteristic quasi-polynomials of ideals of classical root systems ($ABCD$) with respect to the integer and root lattices. As a result, we obtain a full description of the characteristic polynomials of the toric arrangements defined by these ideals. As an application, we provide a combinatorial verification to the fact that the characteristic polynomial of every ideal subarrangement factors over the dual partition of the ideal in the classical cases.

A Demazure crystal is the basis at $q=0$ of a Demazure module. Demazure crystals play an important role in Schubert calculus because the character of a Demazure crystal in type A is identical to a key polynomial, which is closely related to Schubert polynomials. In this paper, we study tensor products of Demazure crystals. Each connected component of a tensor product of Demazure crystals need not be isomorphic to some Demazure crystal. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for every connected component of a tensor product to be isomorphic to some Demazure crystal. Also, we obtain the explicit formula for connected components. As applications, we study the positivity for structure constants of products of key polynomials, and we obtain an equation of crystals, which is an analog of the Leibniz rule for Demazure operators.

We present positivity conjectures for the Schur expansion of Jack symmetric functions in two bases given by binomial coefficients. Partial results suggest that there are rich combinatorics to be found in these bases, including Eulerian numbers, Stirling numbers, quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux, and rook boards. These results also lead to further conjectures about the fundamental quasisymmetric expansions of these bases, which we prove for special cases.

In order to apply quantum topology methods to nonplanar graphs, we define a planar diagram category that describes the local topology of embeddings of graphs into surfaces. These \emph{virtual graphs} are a categorical interpretation of ribbon graphs. We describe an extension of the flow polynomial to virtual graphs, the $S$-polynomial, and formulate the $\mathfrak{sl}(N)$ Penrose polynomial for non-cubic graphs, giving contraction-deletion relations. The $S$-polynomial is used to define an extension of the Yamada polynomial to virtual spatial graphs, and with it we obtain a sufficient condition for non-classicality of virtual spatial graphs. We conjecture the existence of local relations for the $S$-polynomial at squares of integers.
