New Results on Higher-Order Daehee and Bernoulli Numbers and Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We derive new matrix representation for higher order Daehee numbers and polynomials, the higher order lambda-Daehee numbers and polynomials and the twisted lambda-Daehee numbers and polynomials of order k. This helps us to obtain simple and short proofs of many previous results on higher order Daehee numbers and polynomials. Moreover, we obtained recurrence relation, explicit formulas and some new results for these numbers and polynomials. Furthermore, we investigated the relation between these numbers and polynomials and Stirling numbers, Norlund and Bernoulli numbers of higher order. The results of this article gives a generalization of the results derived very recently by El-Desouky and Mustafa [6].
Leaf-to-leaf distances in Catalan trees
Published in Journal of Pure and Applied Mathematics: Advances and Applications 20, 1-29 (2019) • View PublicationBIB
We study the average leaf-to-leaf path lengths on ordered Catalan tree graphs with $n$ nodes and show that these are equivalent to the average length of paths starting from the root node. We give an explicit analytic formula for the average leaf-to-leaf path length as a function of separation of the leaves and study its asymptotic properties. At the heart of our method is a strategy based on an abstract graph representation of generating functions.

Arithmetic Identities and Congruences for Partition Triples with 3-cores
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let ${{B}_{3}}(n)$ denote the number of partition triples of $n$ where each partition is 3-core. With the help of generating function manipulations, we find several infinite families of arithmetic identities and congruences for ${{B}_{3}}(n)$. Moreover, let $ω(n)$ denote the number of representations of a nonnegative integer $n$ in the form $x_{1}^{2}+x_{2}^{2}+x_{3}^{2}+3y_{1}^{2}+3y_{2}^{2}+3y_{3}^{2}$ with ${{x}_{1}},{{x}_{2}},{{x}_{3}},{{y}_{1}},{{y}_{2}},{{y}_{3}}\in \mathbb{Z}.$ We find three arithmetic relations between ${{B}_{3}}(n)$ and $ω(n)$, such as $ω(6n+5)=4{{B}_{3}}(6n+4).$

The Catalan combinatorics of the hereditary artin algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
This is a survey on the categorification of the poset of generalized non-crossing partitions, using the representation theory of a hereditary artin algebra H, looking at the set P of exceptional subcategories in mod H. This categorification is due to Ingalls and Thomas, and a subsequent paper by Igusa and Schiffler. Starting point is a refinement of the classical tilting theory for mod H, replacing torsion pairs by torsion triples, thus putting it into the realm of the stability theory of King. The torsion pairs in mod H correspond nicely to the perpendicular pairs of exceptional subcategories and there is a wealth of bijections, the Ingalls-Thomas bijections, between sets of modules and subcategories. If H is representation-finite, one may look at the corresponding numbers of modules or subcategories. Such Dynkin functions (they attach to a Dynkin diagram an integer) are displayed in chapter 1. In a mysterious way, many Dynkin functions can be described using the exponents of the Weyl group. According to Shapiro and Kostant, the exponents are given by the height partition of the root poset. A recent result of Abe-Barakat-Cuntz-Hoge-Terao allows to determine them inductively, going up in a chain of ideals in the root poset, looking at the corresponding hyperplane arrangements. Chapter 4 deals with the case of the linearly oriented quiver of Dynkin type A. Here P is identified with the lattice NC of non-crossing partitions as introduced by Kreweras (now an important tool in several parts of mathematics, for example in free probability theory). We review some classical problems which are related to the maximal chains in NC: to count labeled trees as well as parking functions. The combinatorics of the Dynkin case A is just the combinatorics of the Catalan numbers; in an appendix, we discuss the nature of classical Catalan combinatorics.

New representation results for planar graphs
A universal representation theorem is derived that shows any graph is the intersection graph of one chordal graph, a number of co-bipartite graphs, and one unit interval graph. Central to the the result is the notion of the clique cover width which is a generalization of the bandwidth parameter. Specifically, we show that any planar graph is the intersection graph of one chordal graph, four co-bipartite graphs, and one unit interval graph. Equivalently, any planar graph is the intersection graph of a chordal graph and a graph that has {clique cover width} of at most seven. We further describe the extensions of the results to graphs drawn on surfaces and graphs excluding a minor of crossing number of at most one.

Infinite symmetric groups and combinatorial constructions of topological field theory type
Published in Russian Mathematical Surveys, 2015, 70:4, 715--773 • View PublicationBIB
The paper contains a survey of train constructions for infinite symmetric groups and related groups. For certain pairs (a group $G$, a subgroup $K$), we construct categories, whose morphisms are two-dimensional surfaces tiled by polygons and colored in a certain way. A product of morphisms is a gluing of combinatorial bordisms. For a unitary representation of $G$ we assign a functor from the category of bordisms to the category of Hilbert spaces and bounded operators. The construction has numerous variations, instead of surfaces there arise also one-dimensional objects of Brauer diagram type, multi-dimensional pseudomanifolds, bipartite graphs

Embedding convex geometries and a bound on convex dimension
Published • View PublicationBIB
The notion of an abstract convex geometry offers an abstraction of the standard notion of convexity in a linear space. Kashiwabara, Nakamura and Okamoto introduce the notion of a generalized convex shelling into $\mathbb{R}$ and prove that a convex geometry may always be represented with such a shelling. We provide a new, shorter proof of their result using a recent representation theorem of Richter and Rubinstein, and deduce a different upper bound on the dimension of the shelling.

Asymptotic properties of biorthogonal polynomials systems related to Hermite and Laguerre polynomials
In this paper, the structures to a family of biorthogonal polynomials that approximate to the Hermite and Generalized Laguerre polynomials are discussed respectively. Therefore, the asymptotic relation between several orthogonal polynomials and combinatorial polynomials are derived from the systems, which in turn verify the Askey scheme of hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials. As the applications of these properties, the asymptotic representations of the generalized Buchholz, Laguerre, Ultraspherical(Gegenbauer), Bernoulli, Euler, Meixner and Meixner-Pllaczekare polynomials are derived from the theorems directly. The relationship between Bernoulli and Euler polynomials are shown as a special case of the characterization theorem of the Appell sequence generated by $α$ scaling functions.
Central Limit Theorems for some Set Partition Statistics

We prove the conjectured limiting normality for the number of crossings of a uniformly chosen set partition of [n] = {1,2,...,n}. The arguments use a novel stochastic representation and are also used to prove central limit theorems for the dimension index and the number of levels.

Polyhedral Omega: A New Algorithm for Solving Linear Diophantine Systems
Published • View PublicationBIB
Polyhedral Omega is a new algorithm for solving linear Diophantine systems (LDS), i.e., for computing a multivariate rational function representation of the set of all non-negative integer solutions to a system of linear equations and inequalities. Polyhedral Omega combines methods from partition analysis with methods from polyhedral geometry. In particular, we combine MacMahon's iterative approach based on the Omega operator and explicit formulas for its evaluation with geometric tools such as Brion decompositions and Barvinok's short rational function representations. In this way, we connect two recent branches of research that have so far remained separate, unified by the concept of symbolic cones which we introduce. The resulting LDS solver Polyhedral Omega is significantly faster than previous solvers based on partition analysis and it is competitive with state-of-the-art LDS solvers based on geometric methods. Most importantly, this synthesis of ideas makes Polyhedral Omega the simplest algorithm for solving linear Diophantine systems available to date. Moreover, we provide an illustrated geometric interpretation of partition analysis, with the aim of making ideas from both areas accessible to readers from a wide range of backgrounds.
Orthogonal Representations, Projective Rank, and Fractional Minimum Positive Semidefinite Rank: Connections and New Directions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Fractional minimum positive semidefinite rank is defined from $r$-fold faithful orthogonal representations and it is shown that the projective rank of any graph equals the fractional minimum positive semidefinite rank of its complement. An $r$-fold version of the traditional definition of minimum positive semidefinite rank of a graph using Hermitian matrices that fit the graph is also presented. This paper also introduces $r$-fold orthogonal representations of graphs and formalizes the understanding of projective rank as fractional orthogonal rank. Connections of these concepts to quantum theory, including Tsirelson's problem, are discussed.

A generalisation of a second partition theorem of Andrews to overpartitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 1968 and 1969, Andrews proved two partition theorems of the Rogers-Ramanujan type which generalise Schur's celebrated partition identity (1926). Andrews' two generalisations of Schur's theorem went on to become two of the most influential results in the theory of partitions, finding applications in combinatorics, representation theory and quantum algebra. In a recent paper, the author generalised the first of these theorems to overpartitions, using a new technique which consists in going back and forth between $q$-difference equations on generating functions and recurrence equations on their coefficients. Here, using a similar method, we generalise the second theorem of Andrews to overpartitions.
Semi-Transitive Orientations and Word-Representable Graphs
A graph $G=(V,E)$ is a \emph{word-representable graph} if there exists a word $W$ over the alphabet $V$ such that letters $x$ and $y$ alternate in $W$ if and only if $(x,y)\in E$ for each $x\neq y$. In this paper we give an effective characterization of word-representable graphs in terms of orientations. Namely, we show that a graph is word-representable if and only if it admits a \emph{semi-transitive orientation} defined in the paper. This allows us to prove a number of results about word-representable graphs, in particular showing that the recognition problem is in NP, and that word-representable graphs include all 3-colorable graphs. We also explore bounds on the size of the word representing the graph. The representation number of $G$ is the minimum $k$ such that $G$ is a representable by a word, where each letter occurs $k$ times; such a $k$ exists for any word-representable graph. We show that the representation number of a word-representable graph on $n$ vertices is at most $2n$, while there exist graphs for which it is $n/2$.

Unit Interval Orders of Open and Closed Intervals
Published • View PublicationBIB
A poset $P = (X,\prec)$ is a unit OC interval order if there exists a representation that assigns an open or closed real interval $I(x)$ of unit length to each $x \in P$ so that $x \prec y$ in $P$ precisely when each point of $I(x)$ is less than each point in $I(y)$. In this paper we give a forbidden poset characterization of the class of unit OC interval orders and an efficient algorithm for recognizing the class. The algorithm takes a poset $P $ as input and either produces a representation or returns a forbidden poset induced in $P$.
Iterated claws have real-rooted genus polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the genus polynomials of the graphs called iterated claws are real-rooted. This continues our work directed toward the 25-year-old conjecture that the genus distribution of every graph is log-concave. We have previously established log-concavity for sequences of graphs constructed by iterative vertex-amalgamation or iterative edge-amalgamation of graphs that satisfy a commonly observable condition on their partitioned genus distributions, even though it had been proved previously that iterative amalgamation does not always preserve real-rootedness of the genus polynomial of the iterated graph. In this paper, the iterated topological operations are adding a claw and adding a 3-cycle, rather than vertex- or edge-amalgamation. Our analysis here illustrates some advantages of employing a matrix representation of the transposition of a set of productions.
Log-concavity of the genus polynomials of Ringel ladders
Published • View PublicationBIB
A Ringel ladder can be formed by a self-bar-amalgamation operation on a symmetric ladder, that is, by joining the root vertices on its end-rungs. The present authors have previously derived criteria under which linear chains of copies of one or more graphs have log-concave genus polynomials. Herein we establish Ringel ladders as the first significant non-linear infinite family of graphs known to have log-concave genus polynomials. We construct an algebraic representation of self-bar-amalgamation as a matrix operation, to be applied to a vector representation of the partitioned genus distribution of a symmetric ladder. Analysis of the resulting genus polynomial involves the use of Chebyshev polynomials. This paper continues our quest to affirm the quarter-century-old conjecture that all graphs have log-concave genus polynomials.

Partial duality and closed 2-cell embeddings
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 2009 Chmutov introduced the idea of partial duality for embeddings of graphs in surfaces. We discuss some alternative descriptions of partial duality, which demonstrate the symmetry between vertices and faces. One is in terms of band decompositions, and the other is in terms of the gem (graph-encoded map) representation of an embedding. We then use these to investigate when a partial dual is a closed 2-cell embedding, in which every face is bounded by a cycle in the graph. We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for a partial dual to be closed 2-cell, and also a sufficient condition for no partial dual to be closed 2-cell.

This paper examines a pair of bent functions on $\mathbb{Z}_2^{2m}$ and their relationship to a necessary condition for the existence of an automorphism of an edge-coloured graph whose colours are defined by the properties of a canonical basis for the real representation of the Clifford algebra $\mathbb{R}_{m,m}.$ Some other necessary conditions are also briefly examined.

Yangian-invariant spin models and Fibonacci numbers
Published in Ann. Phys.-New York 361 (2015) 520-547 • View PublicationBIB
We study a wide class of finite-dimensional su(m|n)-supersymmetric models closely related to the representations of the Yangian Y(sl(m|n)) labeled by border strips. We quantitatively analyze the degree of degeneracy of these models arising from their Yangian invariance, measured by the average degeneracy of the spectrum. We compute in closed form the minimum average degeneracy of any such model, and show that in the non-supersymmetric case it can be expressed in terms of generalized Fibonacci numbers. Using several properties of these numbers, we show that (except in the simpler su(1|1) case) the minimum average degeneracy grows exponentially with the number of spins. We apply our results to several well-known spin chains of Haldane-Shastry type, quantitatively showing that their degree of degeneracy is much higher than expected for a generic Yangian-invariant spin model. Finally, we show that the set of distinct levels of a Yangian-invariant spin model is described by an effective model of quasi-particles. We study this effective model, discussing its connections to one-dimensional anyons and properties of generalized Fibonacci numbers.

A tableau approach to the representation theory of 0-Hecke algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
A 0-Hecke algebra is a deformation of the group algebra of a Coxeter group. Based on work of Norton and Krob--Thibon, we introduce a tableau approach to the representation theory of 0-Hecke algebras of type A, which resembles the classic approach to the representation theory of symmetric groups by Young tableaux and tabloids. We extend this approach to type B and D, and obtain a correspondence between the representation theory of 0-Hecke algebras of type B and D and quasisymmetric functions and noncommutative symmetric functions of type B and D. Other applications are also provided.
