The Schützenberger involution and colored lattice models
Colored lattice models can be used to describe many different types of special functions of interest in both algebraic combinatorics and representation theory, for example Schur polynomials, nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials, and characters and Whittaker functions for representations of p-adic groups. A notable example is the metaplectic ice model of which there are actually two different variants: a Gamma and a Delta variant. These variants differ in key aspects but surprisingly produce equal partition functions, which are weighted sums over admissible configurations, and this equality is called the Gamma-Delta duality. The duality was used to prove the analytic continuation of certain multiple Dirichlet series and is highly non-trivial, especially since the number of configurations on each side of the equality can differ. In this paper we construct a new family of solvable, colored lattice models and prove that they are dual to existing lattice models in the literature, including the above metaplectic case and the lattice model for (non-metaplectic) Iwahori Whittaker functions together with its crystal limit for Demazure atoms for Cartan type A. The equality of partition functions is shown using Yang-Baxter equations involving R-matrices mixing lattice model rows of types Gamma and Delta. For the crystal Demazure lattice model we show that the duality refines to a weight-respecting bijection of states given by the Schützenberger involution on the associated Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns or semistandard Young tableaux. We also show how the individual steps exchanging two rows in the proof of the duality for the partition functions refines to Berenstein-Kirillov, or Bender-Knuth involutions.

Compatibility of Higher Specht Polynomials and Decompositions of Representations
%We show how to normalize the higher Specht polynomials of Ariki, Terasoma, and Yamada in a compatible way in order to define a stable version of these polynomials. We also decompose the non-transitive actions of Haglund, Rhoades, and Shimozono into orbits, and show how the associated basis of higher Specht polynomials of Gillespie and Rhoades respects that decomposition. For a given $n$, the orbits of the action of $S_{n}$ are associated with subsets of the set of positive integers that are smaller than $n$, and we relate the representation associated with a set $I$ to the ones of $S_{n+1}$ associated with $I$ and with its union with $n$, the latter being a lifting of the Branching Rule.

Generalized Higher Specht Polynomials and Homogeneous Representations of Symmetric Groups
We consider actions, similar to those of Haglund, Rhoades, and Shimozono on ordered partitions, and their basis in terms of the higher Specht polynomials of Ariki, Terasoma, and Yamada, as carried out by Gillespie and Rhoades. By allowing empty sets and working with multi-sets and weak partitions as indices, we obtain a decomposition of the action of $S_{n}$ on homogeneous polynomials of degree $d$ into irreducible representations, in a way that lifts a formula of Stanley. By considering generalized higher Specht polynomials, we obtain yet another such decomposition, lifting another formula involving Kostka numbers. We also investigate several operations on both types of representations, which are based on normalizations of the generalized higher Specht polynomials that allow for defining their stable versions.

Two stability theorems on plethysms of Schur functions
The plethysm product of Schur functions corresponds to composing polynomial representations of infinite general linear groups. Finding the plethysm coefficients $\langle s_ν\circ s_μ, s_λ\rangle$ that express an arbitrary plethysm $s_ν\circ s_μ$ as a sum $\sum_λ\langle s_ν\circ s_μ, s_λ\rangle s_λ$ of Schur functions is a fundamental open problem in algebraic combinatorics. We prove two stability theorems for plethysm coefficients under the operations of adding and/or joining an arbitrary partition to either $μ$ or $ν$. In both theorems $μ$ may be replaced with an arbitrary skew partition. As special cases we obtain all stability results on the plethysm product of two Schur functions in the literature to date. The proofs are entirely combinatorial using plethystic semistandard tableaux with positive and negative entries.

p-complete square-free Word-representation of Word-representable Graphs
A graph G(V, E) is word-representable if there exists a word w over V such that distinct letters x and y alternate in w iff $xy \in E$. We introduce p-complete squares and p-complete square-free word-representable graphs. A word is p-complete square-free if no induced subword over any subset of letters contains a square XX with $|X| \ge p$. A graph is p-complete square-free if it admits such a representation. We define p-complete square-free uniform word-representations and study their properties. We show that any graph admitting such a representation forbids Kp as an induced subgraph and that the recognition problem is NP-hard for arbitrary p. For p=1 and 2, we give complete characterisations. We prove that every $K_p$-free circle graph admits a p-complete square-free uniform representation and that any 3-complete square-free uniform word-representable graph has representation number at most three. We present a constructive method for generating new examples for p=3.

The geometry of zonotopal algebras II: Orlik--Terao algebras and Schubert varieties
Zonotopal algebras, introduced by Postnikov--Shapiro--Shapiro, Ardila--Postnikov, and Holtz--Ron, show up in many different contexts, including approximation theory, representation theory, Donaldson--Thomas theory, and hypertoric geometry. In the first half of this paper, we construct a perfect pairing between the internal zonotopal algebra of a linear space and the reduced Orlik--Terao algebra of the Gale dual linear space. As an application, we prove a conjecture of Moseley--Proudfoot--Young that relates the reduced Orlik--Terao algebra of a graph to the cohomology of a certain configuration space. In the second half of the paper, we interpret the Macaulay inverse system of a zonotopal algebra as the space of sections of a sheaf on the Schubert variety of a linear space. As an application of this, we use an equivariant resolution of the structure sheaf of the Schubert variety inside of a product of projective lines to produce an exact sequence relating internal and external zonotopal algebras.

Improved bounds on the zeros of the chromatic polynomial of graphs and claw-free graphs
We prove that for any graph $G$ the (complex) zeros of its chromatic polynomial, $χ_G(x)$, lie inside the disk centered at $0$ of radius $4.25 Δ(G)$, where $Δ(G)$ denotes the maximum degree of $G$. This improves on a recent result of Jenssen, Patel and Regts, who proved a bound of $5.94Δ(G)$. Moreover, we show that for graphs of sufficiently large girth we can replace $4.25$ by $3.60$ and for claw-free graphs we can replace $4.25$ by $3.81$. Our proofs add some substantially novel ideas to those developed by Jenssen, Patel, and Regts, while building on them. A key novel ingredient for claw-free graphs is to use a representation of the coefficients of the chromatic polynomial in terms of the number of certain partial acyclic orientations.
Total trades, intersection matrices and Specht modules
Published • View PublicationBIB
Trades are important objects in combinatorial design theory that may be realized as certain elements of kernels of inclusion matrices. Total trades were introduced recently by Ghorbani, Kamali and Khosravshahi, who showed that over a field of characteristic zero the vector space of trades decomposes into a direct sum of spaces of total trades. In this paper, we show that the vector space spanned by the permutations of a total trade is an irreducible representation of the symmetric group. As a corollary, the previous decomposition theorem is recovered. Also, a basis is obtained for the module of total trades in the spirit of Specht polynomials. More generally, in the second part of the paper we consider intersection matrices and determine the irreducible decompositions of their images. This generalizes previously known results concerning ranks of special cases.

Characteristic polynomial of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$ and log-concavity
Motivated by Stanley's generalization of the chromatic polynomial of a graph to the chromatic symmetric function, we introduce the characteristic polynomial of a representation of the symmetric group, or more generally, of a symmetric function. When the representation arises from geometry, the coefficients of its characteristic polynomial tend to form a log-concave sequence. To illustrate, we investigate explicit examples, including the $n$-fold products of the projective spaces, the GIT moduli spaces of points on $\mathbb{P}^1$ and Hessenberg varieties. Our main focus lies on the cohomology of the moduli space of pointed rational curves, for which we prove asymptotic formulas of its characteristic polynomial and establish asymptotic log-concavity.

Quantum Littlewood correspondences
In the 1940s Littlewood formulated three fundamental correspondences for the immanants and Schur symmetric functions on the general linear group, which establish deep connections between representation theory of the symmetric group and the general linear group parallel to the Schur-Weyl duality. In this paper, we introduce the notion of quantum immanants in the quantum coordinate algebra using primitive idempotents of the Hecke algebra. By employing $R$-matrix techniques, we establish the quantum analog of Littlewood correspondences between quantum immanants and Schur functions for the quantum coordinate algebra. In the setting of the Schur-Weyl-Jimbo duality, we construct an exact correspondence between the Gelfand-Tsetlin bases of the irreducible representations of the quantum enveloping algebra $U_q(\mathfrak{gl}(n))$ and Young's orthonormal basis of an irreducible representation of the Hecke algebra $\mathcal H_m$. This isomorphism leads to our trace formula for the quantum immanants, which settled the generalization problem of $q$-analog of Kostant's formular for $λ$-immanants. As applications, we also derive general $q$-Littlewood-Merris-Watkins identities and $q$-Goulden-Jackson identities as special cases of the quantum Littlewood correspondence III.

A generalization of Ramanujan's sum over finite groups
Let $G$ be a finite group, and let $x \in G$. Define $[x^G] := \{ y \in G : \langle x^G \rangle = \langle y^G \rangle \}$, where $\langle x^G \rangle$ denotes the normal subgroup of $G$ generated by the conjugacy class of $x$. In this paper, we determine an explicit formula for the eigenvalues of the normal Cayley graph $\text{Cay}(G, [x^G])$. These eigenvalues can be viewed as a generalization of classical Ramanujan's sum in the setting of finite groups. Surprisingly, the formula we derive for the eigenvalues of $\text{Cay}(G, [x^G])$ extends the known formula of classical Ramanujan's sum to the context of finite groups. This generalization not only enrich the theory of Ramanujan's sum but also provide new tools in spectral graph theory, representation theory, and algebraic number theory.
The partial derivative of ratios of Schur polynomials and applications to symplectic quotients
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics Volume 134 (2026), 104351 • View PublicationBIB
We show that a ratio of Schur polynomials $s_λ/s_ρ$ associated to partitions $λ$ and $ρ$ such that $λ\subsetneqρ$ has a negative partial derivative at any point where all variables are positive. This is accomplished by establishing an injective map between sets of pairs of skew semistandard Young tableaux that preserves the product of the corresponding monomials. We use this result and the description of the first Laurent coefficient of the Hilbert series of the graded algebra of regular functions on a linear symplectic quotient by the circle to demonstrate that many such symplectic quotients are not graded regularly diffeomorphic. In addition, we give an upper bound for this Laurent coefficient in terms of the largest two weights of the circle representation and demonstrate that all but finitely many circle symplectic quotients of each dimension are not graded regularly diffeomorphic to linear symplectic quotients by $\operatorname{SU}_2$.

On one generalization of stable allocations in a two-sided market
In the stable allocation problem on a two-sided market introduced and studied by Baiou and Balinski in the early 2000's, one is given a bipartite graph $G=(V,E)$ with capacities $b$ on the edges (``contracts'') and quotas $q$ on the vertices (``agents''). Each vertex $v\in V$ is endowed with a linear order on the set $E_v$ of edges incident to $v$, which generates preference relations among functions (``contract intensities'') on $E_v$, giving rise to a model of \it{stable allocations} for $G$. This is a special case of Alkan-Gale's stability model for a bipartite graph with edge capacities in which, instead of linear orders, the preferences of each ``agent'' $v$ are given via a choice function that acts on the box $\{z\in{\mathbb R}_+^{E_v}\colon z(e)\le b(e),\, e\in E_v\}$ or a closed subset in it and obeys the (well motivated) axioms of consistence, substitutability and cardinal monotonicity. By central results in Alkan-Gale's theory, the set of stable assignments generated by such choice functions is nonempty and forms a distributive lattice. In this paper, being in frameworks of Alkan-Gale's model and generalizing the stable allocation one, we consider the situation when the preferences of ``agents'' of one side (``workers'') are given via linear orders, whereas the ones of the other side (``firms'') via integer-valued choice functions subject to the three axioms as above, thus introducing the model of \it{generalized allocations}, or g-allocations for short. Our main aims are to characterize and efficiently construct rotations, functions on $E$ associated with immediately preceding relations in the lattice $(S,\prec)$ of stable g-allocations, and to estimate the complexity of constructing a poset generated by rotations for which the lattice of closed functions is isomorphic to $(S,\prec)$, obtaining a ``compact'' representation of the latter.

Color rules for cyclic wreath products and semigroup algebras from projective toric varieties
We introduce the notion of "color rules" for computing class functions of $Z_k \wr S_n$, where $Z_k$ is the cyclic group of order $k$ and $S_n$ is the symmetric group on $n$ letters. Using a general sign-reversing involution and a map of order $k$, we give a combinatorial proof that the irreducible decomposition of these class functions is given by a weighted sum over semistandard tableaux in the colors. Since using two colors at once is also a color rule, we are consequently able to decompose arbitrary tensor products of representations whose characters can be computed via color rules. This method extends to class functions of $G \wr S_n$ where $G$ is a finite abelian group. We give a number of applications, including decomposing tensor powers of the defining representation, along with a combinatorial proof of the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for $Z_k \wr S_n$. Our main application is to the study of the linear action of $Z_k \wr S_n$ on bigraded affine semigroup algebras arising from the product of projective toric varieties. In the case of the product of projective spaces, our methods give the decomposition of these bigraded characters into irreducible characters, thus deriving equivariant generalizations of Euler-Mahonian identities.
On constrained intersection representations of graphs and digraphs
We study the problem of determining optimal directed intersection representations of DAGs in a model introduced by Kostochka, Liu, Machado, and Milenkovic [ISIT2019]: vertices are assigned color sets so that there is an arc from a vertex $u$ to a vertex $v$ if and only if their color sets have nonempty intersection and $v$ gets assigned strictly more colors than $u$, and the goal is to minimize the total number of colors. We show that the problem is polynomially solvable in the class of triangle-free and Hamiltonian DAGs and also disclose the relationship of this problem with several other models of intersection representations of graphs and digraphs.

Utilizing Symmetry in Finding New Permutiples from Known Examples
A permutiple is a natural number whose representation in some base, $b>1$, is an integer multiple of a number whose base-$b$ representation has the same collection of digits. Previous efforts have made progress in finding such numbers using graph-theoretical and finite-state-machine constructions. These are the mother graph and the Hoey-Sloane machine. In this paper, we leverage the inherent symmetry of the above constructions for the purpose of finding new permutiples from old. Such results also help us to see previous work through a new lens.

Two gluing methods for string C-group representations of the symmetric groups
The study of string C-group representations of rank at least $n/2$ for the symmetric group $S_n$ has gained a lot of attention in the last fifteen years. In a recent paper, Cameron et al. gave a list of permutation representation graphs of rank $r\geq n/2$ for $S_n$, having a fracture graph and a non-perfect split. They conjecture that these graphs are permutation representation graphs of string C-groups. In trying to prove this conjecture, we discovered two new techniques to glue two CPR graphs for symmetric groups together. We discuss the cases in which they yield new CPR graphs. By doing so, we invalidate the conjecture of Cameron et al. We believe our gluing techniques will be useful in the study of string C-group representations of high ranks for the symmetric groups.

Uniform treatments of Bernoulli numbers, Stirling numbers, and their generating functions
In this paper, by virtue of a determinantal formula for derivatives of the ratio between two differentiable functions, in view of the Faà di Bruno formula, and with the help of several identities and closed-form formulas for the partial Bell polynomials $\operatorname{B}_{n,k}$, the author establishes thirteen Maclaurin series expansions of the functions \begin{align*} &\ln\frac{\operatorname{e}^x+1}{2}, && \ln\frac{\operatorname{e}^x-1}{x}, && \ln\cosh x, \\ &\ln\frac{\sinh x}{x}, && \biggl[\frac{\ln(1+x)}{x}\biggr]^r, && \biggl(\frac{\operatorname{e}^x-1}{x}\biggr)^r \end{align*} for $r=\pm\frac{1}{2}$ and $r\in\mathbb{R}$ in terms of the Dirichlet eta function $η(1-2k)$, the Riemann zeta function $ζ(1-2k)$, and the Stirling numbers of the first and second kinds $s(n,k)$ and $S(n,k)$. presents four determinantal expressions and three recursive relations for the Bernoulli numbers $B_{2n}$. finds out three closed-form formulas for the Bernoulli numbers $B_{2n}$ and the generalized Bernoulli numbers $B_n^{(r)}$ in terms of the Stirling numbers of the second kind $S(n,k)$, and deduce two combinatorial identities for the Stirling numbers of the second kind $S(n,k)$. acquires two combinatorial identities, which can be regarded as diagonal recursive relations, involving the Stirling numbers of the first and second kinds $s(n,k)$ and $S(n,k)$. recovers an integral representation and a closed-form formula, and establish an alternative explicit and closed-form formula, for the Bernoulli numbers of the second kind $b_n$ in terms of the Stirling numbers of the first kind $s(n,k)$. obtains three identities connecting the Stirling numbers of the first and second kinds $s(n,k)$ and $S(n,k)$.

A self-avoiding curve associated with sums of digits
For each $n\in N ^{\ast }$, we write $s_{n}=\left( 1,\ldots ,1,0\right) $ with $n$ times $1$. For each $a \in N$, we consider the binary representation $\left( a_{i}\right) _{i\in -N }$ of $a$ with $a_{i}=0$ for nearly each $i$; we denote by $α_{n}(a)$ the number of integers $i$ such that $\left( a_{i}, \ldots ,a_{i+n} \right) =s_{n}$. We consider the curve $C_{n}=\left( S_{n,k}\right) _{k\in N ^{\ast }}$ which consists of consecutive segments of length $1$ such that, for each $k$, $S_{n,k+1}$ is obtained from $S_{n,k}$ by turning right if $k+α_{n}(k)-α_{n}(k-1)$ is even and left otherwise. $C_{1}$ is self-avoiding since it is the curve associated to the alternating folding sequence. In [1], M. Mendès France and J. Shallit conjectured that the curves $C_{n}$ for $n\geq 2$ are also self-avoiding. In the present paper, we show that this property is true for $n=2$. We also prove that $C_{2}$ has some properties similar to those which were shown in [2], [3] and [4] for folding curves.

Geometry of regular semisimple Lusztig varieties
Lusztig varieties are subvarieties in flag manifolds $G/B$ associated to an element $w$ in the Weyl group $W$ and an element $x$ in $G$, introduced in Lusztig's papers on character sheaves. We study the geometry of these varieties when $x$ is regular semisimple. In the first part, we establish that they are normal, Cohen-Macaulay, of pure expected dimension and have rational singularities. We then show that the cohomology of ample line bundles vanishes in positive degrees, in arbitrary characteristic. This extends to nef line bundles when the base field has characteristic zero or sufficiently large characteristic. Along the way, we prove that Lusztig varieties are Frobenius split in positive characteristic and that their open cells are affine. We also prove that the open cells in Deligne-Lusztig varieties are affine, settling a question that has been open since the foundational paper of Deligne and Lusztig. In the second part, we explore their relationship with regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties. Both varieties admit Tymoczko's dot action of $W$ on their (intersection) cohomology. We associate to each element $w$ in $W$ a Hessenberg space using the tangent cone of the Schubert variety associated with $w$, and show that the cohomology of the associated regular semisimple Lusztig varieties and Hessenberg varieties is isomorphic as graded $W$-representations when they are smooth. This relationship extends to the level of varieties: we construct a flat degeneration of regular semisimple Lusztig varieties to regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties. In particular, this proves a conjecture of Abreu and Nigro on the homeomorphism types of regular semisimple Lusztig varieties in type $A$, and generalizes it to arbitrary Lie types.
