Some i-Mark games

Let $S$ be a set of positive integers, and let $D$ be a set of integers larger than $1$. The game $i$-Mark$(S,D)$ is an impartial combinatorial game introduced by Sopena (2016), which is played with a single pile of tokens. In each turn, a player can subtract $s \in S$ from the pile, or divide the size of the pile by $d \in D$, if the pile size is divisible by $d$. Sopena partially analyzed the games with $S=[1, t-1]$ and $D=\{d\}$ for $d \not\equiv 1 \pmod t$, but left the case $d \equiv 1 \pmod t$ open.
We solve this problem by calculating the Sprague-Grundy function of $i$-Mark$([1,t-1],\{d\})$ for $d \equiv 1 \pmod t$, for all $t,d \geq 2$. We also calculate the Sprague-Grundy function of $i$-Mark$(\{2\},\{2k + 1\})$ for all $k$, and show that it exhibits similar behavior. Finally, following Sopena's suggestion to look at games with $|D|>1$, we derive some partial results for the game $i$-Mark$(\{1\}, \{2, 3\})$, whose Sprague-Grundy function seems to behave erratically and does not show any clean pattern. We prove that each value $0,1,2$ occurs infinitely often in its SG sequence, with a maximum gap length between consecutive appearances.
Counting Phylogenetic Networks with Few Reticulation Vertices: Exact Enumeration and Corrections
In previous work, we gave asymptotic counting results for the number of tree-child and normal networks with $k$ reticulation vertices and explicit exponential generating functions of the counting sequences for $k=1,2,3$. The purpose of this note is two-fold. First, we make some corrections to our previous approach which overcounted the above numbers and thus gives erroneous exponential generating functions (however, the overcounting does not effect our asymptotic counting results). Secondly, we use our (corrected) exponential generating functions to derive explicit formulas for the number of tree-child and normal networks with $k=1,2,3$ reticulation vertices. This re-derives recent results of Carona and Zhang, answers their question for normal networks with $k=2$, and adds new formulas in the case $k=3$.

We provide asymptotic formulae for the numbers of bipartite graphs with given degree sequence, and of loopless digraphs with given in- and out-degree sequences, for a wide range of parameters. Our results cover medium range densities and close the gaps between the results known for the sparse and dense ranges. In the case of bipartite graphs, these results were proved by Greenhill, McKay and Wang in 2006 and by Canfield, Greenhill and McKay in 2008, respectively. Our method also essentially covers the sparse range, for which much less was known in the case of loopless digraphs. For the range of densities which our results cover, they imply that the degree sequence of a random bipartite graph with m edges is accurately modelled by a sequence of independent binomial random variables, conditional upon the sum of variables in each part being equal to m. A similar model also holds for loopless digraphs.

We give an optimal version of the classical ``three-gap theorem'' on the fractional parts of $n θ$, in the case where $θ$ is an irrational number that is badly approximable. As a consequence, we deduce a version of Kronecker's inhomogeneous approximation theorem in one dimension for badly approximable numbers. We apply these results to obtain an improved measure of sequence diversity for characteristic Sturmian sequences, where the slope is badly approximable.
Applying Skolem Sequences to Gracefully Label New Families of Triangular Windmills
A function $f$ is a \textit{graceful labelling} of a graph $G=(V,E)$ with $m$ edges if $f$ is an injection $f:V\mapsto \{0,1,2,\dots,m\}$ such that each edge $uv \in E$ is assigned the label $|f(u)-f(v)|$, and no two edge labels are the same. If a graph G has a graceful labelling, we say that $G$ itself is graceful.
In this paper, we prove any Dutch windmill with three pendant triangles is (near) graceful, which settles Rosa's conjecture for a new family of triangular cacti.

A pentagonal geometry PENT($k$, $r$) is a partial linear space, where every line, or block, is incident with $k$ points, every point is incident with $r$ lines, and for each point $x$, there is a line incident with precisely those points that are not collinear with $x$. An opposite line pair in a pentagonal geometry consists of two parallel lines such that each point on one of the lines is not collinear with precisely those points on the other line.
We give a direct construction for an infinite sequence of pentagonal geometries with block size 3 and connected deficiency graphs. Also we present 39 new pentagonal geometries with block size 4 and five with block size 5, all with connected deficiency graphs. Consequentially we determine the existence spectrum up to a few possible exceptions for PENT(4, $r$) that do not contain opposite line pairs and for PENT(4, $r$) with one opposite line pair. More generally, given $j$ we show that there exists a PENT(4, $r$) with $j$ opposite line pairs for all sufficiently large admissible $r$. Using some new group divisible designs with block size 5 (including types $2^{35}$, $2^{71}$ and $10^{23}$) we significantly extend the known existence spectrum for PENT(5, $r$).

Log-concavity and almost log-convexity of the cycle index polynomials were proved by Bender and Canfield [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 74 (1996)]. Schirmacher [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 85 (1999)] extended them to $q$-log-concavity and almost $q$-log-convexity. Motivated by these, we consider the stronger properties total positivity from the Toeplitz matrix and Hankel matrix.
By using exponential Riordan array methods, we give some criteria for total positivity of the triangular matrix of coefficients of the generalized cycle index polynomials, the Toeplitz matrix and Hankel matrix of the polynomial sequence in terms of the exponential formula, the logarithmic formula and the fractional formula, respectively.
Finally, we apply our criteria to some triangular arrays satisfying some recurrence relations, including Bessel triangles of two kinds and their generalizations, the Lah triangle and its generalization, the idempotent triangle and some triangles related to binomial coefficients, rook polynomials and Laguerre polynomials. We not only get total positivity of these lower-triangles, and $q$-Stieltjes moment properties and $3$-$q$-log-convexity of their row-generating functions, but also prove that their triangular convolutions preserve Stieltjes moment property. In particular, we solve a conjecture of Sokal on $q$-Stieltjes moment property of rook polynomials.
Bijections for restricted inversion sequences and permutations with fixed points
We provide a bijective proof of a formula of Auli and the author expressing the number of inversion sequences with no three consecutive equal entries in terms of the number of non-derangements, that is, permutations with fixed points. Additionally, we give bijective proofs of two simple recurrences for the number of non-derangements.

We address the problem of ordering trees with the same degree sequence by their spectral radii. To achieve that, we consider 2-switch transformations which preserve the degree sequence and establish when the index decreases. Our main contribution is to determine a total ordering of a particular family by their indices according to a given parameter related to sizes in the tree.

In this paper we first present summation formulas for $k$-order Eulerian polynomials and $1/k$-Eulerian polynomials. We then present combinatorial expansions of $(c(x)D)^n$ in terms of inversion sequences as well as $k$-Young tableaux, where $c(x)$ is a differentiable function in the indeterminate $x$ and $D$ is the derivative with respect to $x$. We define the $g$-indexes of $k$-Young tableaux and Young tableaux, which have important applications in combinatorics. By establishing some relations between $k$-Young tableaux and standard Young tableaux, we express Eulerian polynomials, second-order Eulerian polynomials, André polynomials and the generating polynomials of gamma coefficients of Eulerian polynomials in terms of standard Young tableaux, which imply a deep connection among these polynomials.

An FI- or an OI-module $\mathbf{M}$ over a corresponding noetherian polynomial algebra $\mathbf{P}$ may be thought of as a sequence of compatible modules $\mathbf{M}_n$ over a polynomial ring $\mathbf{P}_n$ whose number of variables depends linearly on $n$. In order to study invariants of the modules $\mathbf{M}_n$ in dependence of $n$, an equivariant Hilbert series is introduced if $\mathbf{M}$ is graded. If $\mathbf{M}$ is also finitely generated, it is shown that this series is a rational function. Moreover, if this function is written in reduced form rather precise information about the irreducible factors of the denominator is obtained. This is key for applications. It follows that the Krull dimension of the modules $\mathbf{M}_n$ grows eventually linearly in $n$, whereas the multiplicity of $\mathbf{M}_n$ grows eventually exponentially in $n$. Moreover, for any fixed degree $j$, the vector space dimensions of the degree $j$ components of $\mathbf{M}_n$ grow eventually polynomially in $n$. As a consequence, any graded Betti number of $\mathbf{M}_n$ in a fixed homological degree and a fixed internal degree grows eventually polynomially in $n$. Furthermore, evidence is obtained to support a conjecture that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and the projective dimension of $\mathbf{M}_n$ both grow eventually linearly in $n$. It is also shown that modules $\mathbf{M}$ whose width $n$ components $\mathbf{M}_n$ are eventually Artinian can be characterized by their equivariant Hilbert series. Using regular languages and finite automata, an algorithm for computing equivariant Hilbert series is presented.
Discrete correlations of order 2 of generalised Rudin-Shapiro sequences: a combinatorial approach
We introduce a family of block-additive automatic sequences, that are obtained by allocating a weight to each couple of digits, and defining the $n$th term of the sequence as being the total weight of the integer $n$ written in base $k$. Under an additional difference condition on the weight function, these sequences can be interpreted as generalised Rudin-Shapiro sequences, and we prove that they have the same correlations of order 2 as sequences of symbols chosen uniformly and independently at random. The speed of convergence is very fast and is independent of the prime factor decomposition of $k$. This extends recent work of Tahay. The proof relies on direct observations about base-$k$ representations of integers and combinatorial considerations. We also provide extensions of our results to higher-dimensional block-additive sequences.
The resolution of Niho's last conjecture concerning sequences, codes, and Boolean functions

A new method is used to resolve a long-standing conjecture of Niho concerning the crosscorrelation spectrum of a pair of maximum length linear recursive sequences of length $2^{2 m}-1$ with relative decimation $d=2^{m+2}-3$, where $m$ is even. The result indicates that there are at most five distinct crosscorrelation values. Equivalently, the result indicates that there are at most five distinct values in the Walsh spectrum of the power permutation $f(x)=x^d$ over a finite field of order $2^{2 m}$ and at most five distinct nonzero weights in the cyclic code of length $2^{2 m}-1$ with two primitive nonzeros $α$ and $α^d$. The method used to obtain this result proves constraints on the number of roots that certain seventh degree polynomials can have on the unit circle of a finite field. The method also works when $m$ is odd, in which case the associated crosscorrelation and Walsh spectra have at most six distinct values.
Sets Arising as Minimal Additive Complements in the Integers

A subset $C$ of an abelian group $G$ is a minimal additive complement to $W \subseteq G$ if $C + W = G$ and if $C' + W \neq G$ for any proper subset $C' \subset C$. In this paper, we study which sets of integers arise as minimal additive complements. We confirm a conjecture of Kwon, showing that bounded-below sets with arbitrarily large gaps arise as minimal additive complements. Moreover, our construction shows that any such set belongs to a co-minimal pair, strengthening a result of Biswas and Saha for lacunary sequences. We bound the upper and lower Banach density of syndetic sets that arise as minimal additive complements to finite sets. We provide some necessary conditions for an eventually periodic set to arise as a minimal additive complement and demonstrate that these necessary conditions are also sufficient for certain classes of eventually periodic sets. We conclude with several conjectures and questions concerning the structure of minimal additive complements.

Alavi, Malde, Schwenk and Erdős asked whether the independent set sequence of every tree is unimodal. Here we make some observations about this question. We show that for the uniformly random (labelled) tree, asymptotically almost surely (a.a.s.) the initial approximately 49.5\% of the sequence is increasing while the terminal approximately 38.8\% is decreasing. Our approach uses the Matrix Tree Theorem, combined with computation. We also present a generalization of a result of Levit and Mandrescu, concerning the final one-third of the independent set sequence of a König-Egerváry graph.

We study a variant of Erd\H os' unit distance problem, concerning dot products between successive pairs of points chosen from a large finite point set. Specifically, given a large finite set of $n$ points $E$, and a sequence of nonzero dot products $(α_1,\ldots,α_k)$, we give upper and lower bounds on the maximum possible number of tuples of distinct points $(A_1,\dots, A_{k+1})\in E^{k+1}$ satisfying $A_j \cdot A_{j+1}=α_j$ for every $1\leq j \leq k$.

We consider numeration systems based on a $d$-tuple $\mathbf{U}=(U_1,\ldots,U_d)$ of sequences of integers and we define $(\mathbf{U},\mathbb{K})$-regular sequences through $\mathbb{K}$-recognizable formal series, where $\mathbb{K}$ is any semiring. We show that, for any $d$-tuple $\mathbf{U}$ of Pisot numeration systems and any commutative semiring $\mathbb{K}$, this definition does not depend on the greediness of the $\mathbf{U}$-representations of integers. The proof is constructive and is based on the fact that the normalization is realizable by a $2d$-tape finite automaton. In particular, we use an ad hoc operation mixing a $2d$-tape automaton and a $\mathbb{K}$-automaton in order to obtain a new $\mathbb{K}$-automaton.
Families of delta-correlated arrays derived from the Fourier spectra of Huffman sequences
Finite discrete Huffman sequences, together with their extension to n-dimensional arrays, are highly valued because their discrete aperiodic auto-correlations optimally approximate the continuum form of the delta function. We present here several new families of real and integer-valued Huffman sequences, beyond those of the recursive form found by Hunt and Ackroyd. These new sequences are derived using the remarkably uniform discrete Fourier power spectra of Huffman sequences, where the elements are expressed as terms of the Fibonacci sequence.
Twin-width II: small classes

The twin-width of a graph $G$ is the minimum integer $d$ such that $G$ has a $d$-contraction sequence, that is, a sequence of $|V(G)|-1$ iterated vertex identifications for which the overall maximum number of red edges incident to a single vertex is at most $d$, where a red edge appears between two sets of identified vertices if they are not homogeneous in $G$. We show that if a graph admits a $d$-contraction sequence, then it also has a linear-arity tree of $f(d)$-contractions, for some function $f$. First this permits to show that every bounded twin-width class is small, i.e., has at most $n!c^n$ graphs labeled by $[n]$, for some constant $c$. This unifies and extends the same result for bounded treewidth graphs [Beineke and Pippert, JCT '69], proper subclasses of permutations graphs [Marcus and Tardos, JCTA '04], and proper minor-free classes [Norine et al., JCTB '06]. The second consequence is an $O(\log n)$-adjacency labeling scheme for bounded twin-width graphs, confirming several cases of the implicit graph conjecture. We then explore the "small conjecture" that, conversely, every small hereditary class has bounded twin-width. Inspired by sorting networks of logarithmic depth, we show that $\log_{Θ(\log \log d)}n$-subdivisions of $K_n$ (a small class when $d$ is constant) have twin-width at most $d$. We obtain a rather sharp converse with a surprisingly direct proof: the $\log_{d+1}n$-subdivision of $K_n$ has twin-width at least $d$. Secondly graphs with bounded stack or queue number (also small classes) have bounded twin-width. Thirdly we show that cubic expanders obtained by iterated random 2-lifts from $K_4$~[Bilu and Linial, Combinatorica '06] have bounded twin-width, too. We suggest a promising connection between the small conjecture and group theory. Finally we define a robust notion of sparse twin-width and discuss how it compares with other sparse classes.
Asymptotic behaviour of normalized dimensions of standard and strict Young diagrams -- growth and oscillations

In this paper, we present the results of a computer investigation of asymptotics for maximum dimensions of linear and projective representations of the symmetric group. This problem reduces to the investigation of standard and strict Young diagrams of maximum dimensions. We constructed some sequences for both standard and strict Young diagrams with extremely large dimensions. The conjecture that the limit of normalized dimensions exists was proposed 30 years ago [A.~M.~Vershik and S.~V.~Kerov, 1985] and has not been proved yet. We studied the growth and oscillations of the normalized dimension function in sequences of Young diagrams. Our approach is based on analyzing finite differences of their normalized dimensions. This analysis also allows us to give much more precise estimation of the limit constants.
