Operads of (noncrossing) partitions, interacting bialgebras, and moment-cumulant relations
Published in Advances in Mathematics 369, 2020, 107170 • View PublicationBIB
We establish and explore a relationship between two approaches to moment-cumulant relations in free probability theory: on one side the main approach, due to Speicher, given in terms of Möbius inversion on the lattice of noncrossing partitions, and on the other side the more recent non-commutative shuffle-algebra approach, where the moment-cumulant relations take the form of certain exponential-logarithm relations. We achieve this by exhibiting two operad structures on (noncrossing) partitions, different in nature: one is an ordinary, non-symmetric operad whose composition law is given by insertion into gaps between elements, the other is a coloured, symmetric operad with composition law expressing refinement of blocks. We show that these operad structures interact so as to make the corresponding incidence bialgebra of the former a comodule bialgebra for the latter. Furthermore, this interaction is compatible with the shuffle structure and thus unveils how the two approaches are intertwined. Moreover, the constructions and results are general enough to extend to ordinary set partitions.

Limit theorems for statistics of non-crossing partitions
We study the distribution of several statistics of large non-crossing partitions. First, we prove the Gaussian limit theorem for the number of blocks of a given fixed size. In contrast to the properties of usual set partitions, we show that the number of blocks of different sizes are negatively correlated, even for large partitions. In addition, we show that the sizes of blocks in a given large non-crossing partition are distributed according to a geometric distribution and not Poisson, as in the case of usual set partitions. Next, we show that the size of the largest block concentrates at $\log_2 n$, and that after an appropriate rescaling, it can be described by the double exponential distribution. Finally, we show that the width of a large non-crossing partition converges to the Theta-distribution which arises in the theory of Brownian excursions.
Combinatorial generation via permutation languages. I. Fundamentals
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this work we present a general and versatile algorithmic framework for exhaustively generating a large variety of different combinatorial objects, based on encoding them as permutations. This approach provides a unified view on many known results and allows us to prove many new ones. In particular, we obtain four classical Gray codes for permutations, bitstrings, binary trees and set partitions as special cases. We present two distinct applications for our new framework: The first main application is the generation of pattern-avoiding permutations, yielding new Gray codes for different families of permutations that are characterized by the avoidance of certain classical patterns, (bi)vincular patterns, barred patterns, boxed patterns, Bruhat-restricted patterns, mesh patterns, monotone and geometric grid classes, and many others. We also obtain new Gray codes for all the combinatorial objects that are in bijection to these permutations, in particular for five different types of geometric rectangulations, also known as floorplans, which are divisions of a square into $n$ rectangles subject to certain restrictions. The second main application of our framework are lattice congruences of the weak order on the symmetric group $S_n$. Recently, Pilaud and Santos realized all those lattice congruences as $(n-1)$-dimensional polytopes, called quotientopes, which generalize hypercubes, associahedra, permutahedra etc. Our algorithm generates the equivalence classes of each of those lattice congruences, by producing a Hamilton path on the skeleton of the corresponding quotientope, yielding a constructive proof that each of these highly symmetric graphs is Hamiltonian. We thus also obtain a provable notion of optimality for the Gray codes obtained from our framework: They translate into walks along the edges of a polytope.

A Graph-theoretic Method to Define any Boolean Operation on Partitions
Published in The Art of Discrete and Applied Mathematics, 2019 • View PublicationBIB
The lattice operations of join and meet were defined for set partitions in the nineteenth century, but no new logical operations on partitions were defined and studied during the twentieth century. Yet there is a simple and natural graph-theoretic method presented here to define any n-ary Boolean operation on partitions. An equivalent closure-theoretic method is also defined. In closing, the question is addressed of why it took so long for all Boolean operations to be defined for partitions.

Sum of weighted records in set partitions
The purpose of this paper is to find an explicit formula and asymptotic estimate for the total number of sum of weighted records over set partitions of $[n]$ in terms of Bell numbers. For that we study the generating function for the number of set partitions of $[n]$ according to the statistic sum of weighted records.

Study of the $p,q$-deformed Touchard polynomials
A two-parameter deformation of the Touchard polynomials, based on the NEXT $q$-exponential function of Tsallis, defines two statistics on set partitions. The generating function of classical Touchard polynomials is a composition of two exponential functions. By applying analysis of a combinatorial structure of the deformed exponential function, we establish explicit formulae for both statistics. Moreover, the explicit formulae for the deformed Touchard polynomials makes possible to evaluate coefficients of Taylor series expansion for wide variety of functions with different values of parameters $p$ and $q$.

A Combinatorial Identity for Rooted Labeled Forests
Published in Aequationes Math. (July 2019) • View PublicationBIB
In this brief note a straightforward combinatorial proof for an identity directly connecting rooted forests and unordered set partitions is provided. Furthermore, references that put this type of identity in the context of forest volumes and multinomial identities are given.
Restricted $r$-Stirling Numbers and their Combinatorial Applications
We study set partitions with $r$ distinguished elements and block sizes found in an arbitrary index set $S$. The enumeration of these $(S,r)$-partitions leads to the introduction of $(S,r)$-Stirling numbers, an extremely wide-ranging generalization of the classical Stirling numbers and the $r$-Stirling numbers. We also introduce the associated $(S,r)$-Bell and $(S,r)$-factorial numbers. We study fundamental aspects of these numbers, including recurrence relations and determinantal expressions. For $S$ with some extra structure, we show that the inverse of the $(S,r)$-Stirling matrix encodes the Möbius functions of two families of posets. Through several examples, we demonstrate that for some $S$ the matrices and their inverses involve the enumeration sequences of several combinatorial objects. Further, we highlight how the $(S,r)$-Stirling numbers naturally arise in the enumeration of cliques and acyclic orientations of special graphs, underlining their ubiquity and importance. Finally, we introduce related $(S,r)$ generalizations of the poly-Bernoulli and poly-Cauchy numbers, uniting many past works on generalized combinatorial sequences.

On the maximal multiplicity of block sizes in a random set partition
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the asymptotic behavior of the maximal multiplicity $M_n=M_n(σ)$ of the blocks in a set partition of $[n]=\{1,2,...,n\}$, assuming that $σ$ is chosen uniformly at random from the set of all such partitions. Let $W=W(n)$ be the unique positive root of the equation $We^W=n$ and let $f_n$ be the fractional part of $W(n)$. Furthermore, let $R_n=W^{\lfloor W\rfloor}/\lfloor W\rfloor !$ and let $\vartheta_n=\min{\{f_n,1-f_n\}}$. We show that, over a subsequence $\{n_k\}_{k\ge 1}$, $(M_{n_k}-R_{n_k})/\sqrt{R_{n_k}}$ converges weakly, as $k\to\infty$, to $\max{\{Z_1,Z_2-u\}}$, where $Z_1$ and $Z_2$ are two independent copies of a standard normal random variable and either $u=\left(\frac{1}{2π}\right)^{1/4}\lim_{k\to\infty}\vartheta_{n_k}\frac{\sqrt{n_k}}{\log^{7/4}{n_k}}\in [0,\infty)$ or $u=\infty$. The proof uses the saddle point method. A comparison with the similar statistic for random integer partitions of $n$ is also given.

Central limit theorems for patterns in multiset permutations and set partitions
Published in Annals of Applied Probability, 30 (1), pp. 287-323, 2020 • View PublicationBIB
We use the recently developed method of weighted dependency graphs to prove central limit theorems for the number of occurrences of any fixed pattern in multiset permutations and in set partitions. This generalizes results for patterns of size 2 in both settings, obtained by Canfield, Janson and Zeilberger and Chern, Diaconis, Kane and Rhoades, respectively.
Matroid-minor Hopf algebra: a cancellation-free antipode formula and other applications of sign-reversing involutions
In this paper, we give a cancellation-free antipode formula for the matroid-minor Hopf algebra. We then explore applications of this formula. For example, the cancellation-free formula expresses the antipode of uniform matroids as a sum over certain ordered set partitions. We also prove that all matroids over any hyperfield (in the sense of Baker and Bowler) have cancellation-free antipode formulas; furthermore, the cancellations in the antipode are independent of the hyperfield structure and only depend on the underlying matroid.

From $q$-Stirling numbers to the Delta Conjecture: a viewpoint from vincular patterns
Published • View PublicationBIB
The distribution of certain Mahonian statistic (called $\mathrm{BAST}$) introduced by Babson and Steingrímsson over the set of permutations that avoid vincular pattern $1\underline{32}$, is shown bijectively to match the distribution of major index over the same set. This new layer of equidistribution is then applied to give alternative interpretations of two related $q$-Stirling numbers of the second kind, studied by Carlitz and Gould. Moreover, extensions to an Euler-Mahonian statistic over ordered set partitions, and to statistics over ordered multiset partitions present themselves naturally. The latter of which is shown to be related to the recently proven Delta Conjecture. During the course, a refined relation between $\mathrm{BAST}$ and its reverse complement $\mathrm{STAT}$ is derived as well.

Shell Tableaux: A set partition analogue of vacillating tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
Schur-Weyl duality is a fundamental framework in combinatorial representation theory. It intimately relates the irreducible representations of a group to the irreducible representations of its centralizer algebra. We investigate the analog of Schur-Weyl duality for the group of unipotent upper triangular matrices over a finite field. In this case, the character theory of these upper triangular matrices is "wild" or unattainable. Thus we employ a generalization, known as supercharacter theory, that creates a striking variation on the character theory of the symmetric group with combinatorics built from set partitions. In this paper, we present a combinatorial formula for calculating a restriction and induction of supercharacters based on statistics of set partitions and seashell inspired diagrams. We use these formulas to create a graph that encodes the decomposition of a tensor space, and develop an analog of Young tableaux, known as shell tableaux, to index paths in this graph.

A combinatorial formula for the Ehrhart $h^{*}$-vector of the hypersimplex
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a combinatorial formula for the Ehrhart $h^*$-vector of the hypersimplex. In particular, we show that $h^{*}_{d}(Δ_{k,n})$ is the number of hypersimplicial decorated ordered set partitions of type $(k,n)$ with winding number $d$, thereby proving a conjecture of Nick Early. We do this by proving a more general conjecture of Nick Early on the Ehrhart $h^*$-vector of a generic cross-section of a hypercube.

Stack-Sorting, Set Partitions, and Lassalle's Sequence
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series A, 175 (2020) • View PublicationBIB
We exhibit a bijection between recently-introduced combinatorial objects known as valid hook configurations and certain weighted set partitions. When restricting our attention to set partitions that are matchings, we obtain three new combinatorial interpretations of Lassalle's sequence. One of these interpretations involves permutations that have exactly one preimage under the (West) stack-sorting map. We prove that the sequences obtained by counting these permutations according to their first entries are symmetric, and we conjecture that they are log-concave. We also obtain new recurrence relations involving Lassalle's sequence and the sequence that enumerates valid hook configurations. We end with several suggestions for future work.

Enumerations of bargraphs with respect to corner statistics
Published in Applicable Analysis and Discrete Mathematics, 14, 221-238, 2020 • View PublicationBIB
We study the enumeration of bargraphs with respect to some corner statistics. We find generating functions for the number of bargraphs that tracks the corner statistics of interest, the number of cells, and the number of columns. The bargraph representation of set partitions is also considered and some explicit formulas are obtained for the number of some specific types of corners in such representations.

Pattern Avoidance in Set Partitions
A set partition avoids a pattern if no subdivision of that partition standardizes to the pattern. There exists a bijection between set partitions and restricted growth functions (RGFs) on which Wachs and White defined four statistics of interest to this work. We first characterize the restricted growth functions of several avoidance classes based on partitions of size four, enumerate these avoidance classes, and consider the distribution of the Wachs and White statistics across these avoidance classes. We also investigate the equidistribution of statistics between avoidance classes based on multiple patterns.

Attacks and alignments: rooks, set partitions, and permutations
We consider uniformly random set partitions of size $n$ with exactly $k$ blocks, and uniformly random permutations of size $n$ with exactly $k$ cycles, under the regime where $n-k \sim t\sqrt{n}$, $t>0$. In this regime, there is a simple approximation for the entire process of component counts; in particular, the number of components of size 3 converges in distribution to Poisson with mean $\frac{2}{3}t^2$ for set partitions and mean $\frac{4}{3}t^2$ for permutations, and with high probability all other components have size one or two. These approximations are proved, with preasymptotic error bounds, using combinatorial bijections for placements of $r$ rooks on a triangular half of an $n\times n$ chess board, together with the Chen--Stein method for processes of indicator random variables.
A Geometric Interpretation of the Intertwining Number
Published • View PublicationBIB
We exhibit a connection between two statistics on set partitions, the intertwining number and the depth-index. In particular, results link the intertwining number to the algebraic geometry of Borel orbits. Furthermore, by studying the generating polynomials of our statistics, we determine the $q=-1$ specialization of a $q$-analogue of the Bell numbers. Finally, by using Renner's $H$-polynomial of an algebraic monoid, we introduce and study a $t$-analog of $q$-Stirling numbers.

Set partitions without blocks of certain sizes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give an asymptotic estimate for the number of partitions of a set of $n$ elements, whose block sizes avoid a given set $\mathcal{S}$ of natural numbers. As an application, we derive an estimate for the number of partitions of a set with $n$ elements, which have the property that its blocks can be combined to form subsets of any size between $1$ and $n$.
