When $k$ factors each taking one of $v$ levels may affect the correctness or performance of a complex system, a test is selected by setting each factor to one of its levels and determining whether the system functions as expected (passes the test) or not (fails). In our setting, each test failure can be attributed to at least one faulty (factor, level) pair. A nonadaptive test suite is a selection of such tests to be executed in parallel. One goal is to minimize the number of tests in a test suite from which we can determine which (factor, level) pairs are faulty, if any. In this paper, we determine the number of tests needed to locate faults when exactly one (or at most one) pair is faulty. To do this, we address an equivalent problem, to determine how many set partitions of a set of size $N$ exist in which each partition contains $v$ classes and no two classes in the partitions are equal.

The goal of this paper is to show that valuation theory and Hopf theory are compatible on the class of generalized permutahedra. We prove that the Hopf structure $\mathbf{GP}^+$ on these polyhedra descends, modulo the inclusion-exclusion relations, to an indicator Hopf monoid $\mathbb{I}(\mathbf{GP}^+)$ of generalized permutahedra that is isomorphic to the Hopf monoid of weighted ordered set partitions. This quotient Hopf monoid $\mathbb{I}(\mathbf{GP}^+)$ is cofree. It is the terminal object in the category of Hopf monoids with polynomial characters; this partially explains the ubiquity of generalized permutahedra in the theory of Hopf monoids.
This Hopf theoretic framework offers a simple, unified explanation for many new and old valuations on generalized permutahedra and their subfamilies. Examples include, for matroids: the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson cycles, Eur's volume polynomial, the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial, the motivic zeta function, and the Derksen-Fink invariant; for posets: the order polynomial, Poincaré polynomial, and poset Tutte polynomial; for generalized permutahedra: the universal Tutte character and the corresponding class in the Chow ring of the permutahedral variety.
We obtain several algebraic and combinatorial corollaries; for example: the existence of the valuative character group of $\mathbf{GP}^+$, and the indecomposability of a nestohedron into smaller nestohedra.
Set Partition Patterns and the Dimension Index
The notion of containment and avoidance provides a natural partial ordering on set partitions. Work of Sagan and of Goyt has led to enumerative results in avoidance classes of set partitions, which were refined by Dahlberg et al. through the use of combinatorial statistics. We continue this work by computing the distribution of the dimension index (a statistic arising from the supercharacter theory of finite groups) across certain avoidance classes of partitions. In doing so we obtain a novel connection between noncrossing partitions and 321-avoiding permutations, as well as connections to many other combinatorial objects such as Motzkin and Fibonacci polynomials.
Pattern Matching in Set Partitions is NP-Complete
In this note we show that pattern matching in permutations is polynomial time reducible to pattern matching in set partitions. In particular, pattern matching in set partitions is NP-Complete.
Sorting with pattern-avoiding stacks: the $132$-machine

This paper continues the analysis of the pattern-avoiding sorting machines recently introduced by Cerbai, Claesson and Ferrari [CCF]. These devices consist of two stacks, through which a permutation is passed in order to sort it, where the content of each stack must at all times avoid a certain pattern. Here we characterize and enumerate the set of permutations that can be sorted when the first stack is $132$-avoiding, solving one of the open problems proposed in [CCF]. To that end we present several connections with other well known combinatorial objects, such as lattice paths and restricted growth functions (which encode set partitions). We also provide new proofs for the enumeration of some sets of pattern-avoiding restricted growth functions and we expect that the tools introduced can be fruitfully employed to get further similar results.
Generalized Ordered Set Partitions
In this paper, we consider ordered set partitions obtained by imposing conditions on the size of the lists, and such that the first $r$ elements are in distinct blocks, respectively. We introduce a generalization of the Lah numbers. For this new combinatorial sequence we derive its exponential generating function, some recurrence relations, and combinatorial identities. We prove and present results using combinatorial arguments, generating functions, the symbolic method and Riordan arrays. For some specific cases we provide a combinatorial interpretation for the inverse matrix of the generalized Lah numbers by means of two families of posets.

In this article, we study the Bruhat-Chevalley-Renner order on the complex symplectic monoid $MSp_n$. After showing that this order is completely determined by the Bruhat-Chevalley-Renner order on the linear algebraic monoid of $n\times n$ matrices $M_n$, we focus on the Borel submonoid of $MSp_n$. By using this submonoid, we introduce a new set of type B set partitions. We determine their count by using the ``folding'' and ``unfolding'' operators that we introduce. We show that the Borel submonoid of a rationally smooth reductive monoid with zero is rationally smooth. Finally, we analyze the nilpotent subsemigroups of the Borel semigroups of $M_n$ and $MSp_n$. We show that, contrary to the case of $MSp_n$, the nilpotent subsemigroup of the Borel submonoid of $M_n$ is irreducible.
Poset Hopf Monoids
We initiate the study of a large class of species monoids and comonoids which come equipped with a poset structure that is compatible with the multiplication and comultiplication maps. We show that if a monoid and a comonoid are related through a Galois connection, then they are dual to each other. This duality is best understood by introducing a new basis constructed through Möbius inversion. We use this new basis to give uniform proofs for cofreeness and calculations of primitives for the Hopf monoids of set partitions, graphs, hypergraphs, and simplicial complexes.
Further, we show that the monoid and comonoid of a Hopf monoid are related through a Galois connection if and only if the Hopf monoid is linearized, commutative, and cocommutative. In these cases, we give a grouping-free formula for the antipode in terms of an evaluation of the characteristic polynomial of a related poset. This gives new proofs for the antipodes of the Hopf monoids of graphs, hypergraphs, set partitions, and simplicial complexes.

Let $k \leq n$ be nonnegative integers and let $λ$ be a partition of $k$. S. Griffin recently introduced a quotient $R_{n,λ}$ of the polynomial ring $\mathbb{Q}[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ in $n$ variables which simultaneously generalizes the Delta Conjecture coinvariant rings of Haglund-Rhoades-Shimozono and the cohomology rings of Springer fibers studied by Tanisaki and Garsia-Procesi. We describe the space $V_{n,λ}$ of harmonics attached to $R_{n,λ}$ and produce a harmonic basis of $R_{n,λ}$ indexed by certain ordered set partitions $\mathcal{OP}_{n,λ}$. The combinatorics of this basis is governed by a new extension of the {\em Lehmer code} of a permutation to $\mathcal{OP}_{n, λ}$.

We introduce a family of ideals $I_{n,λ,s}$ in $\mathbb{Q}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ for $λ$ a partition of $k\leq n$ and an integer $s \geq \ell(λ)$. This family contains both the Tanisaki ideals $I_λ$ and the ideals $I_{n,k}$ of Haglund-Rhoades-Shimozono as special cases. We study the corresponding quotient rings $R_{n,λ,s}$ as symmetric group modules. When $n=k$ and $s$ is arbitrary, we recover the Garsia-Procesi modules, and when $λ=(1^k)$ and $s=k$, we recover the generalized coinvariant algebras of Haglund-Rhoades-Shimozono. We give a monomial basis for $R_{n,λ,s}$, unifying the monomial bases studied by Garsia-Procesi and Haglund-Rhoades-Shimozono, and realize the $S_n$-module structure of $R_{n,λ,s}$ in terms of an action on $(n,λ,s)$-ordered set partitions. We also prove formulas for the Hilbert series and graded Frobenius characteristic of $R_{n,λ,s}$. We then connect our work with Eisenbud-Saltman rank varieties using results of Weyman. As an application of our work, we give a monomial basis, Hilbert series formula, and graded Frobenius characteristic formula for the coordinate ring of the scheme-theoretic intersection of a rank variety with diagonal matrices.

We find Stieltjes-type and Jacobi-type continued fractions for some "master polynomials" that enumerate permutations, set partitions or perfect matchings with a large (sometimes infinite) number of simultaneous statistics. Our results contain many previously obtained identities as special cases, providing a common refinement of all of them.
Combinatorial statistics on restricted growth functions containing a pattern exactly $k$ times
In this undergraduate thesis, we expand on the study of statistics on restricted growth functions avoiding patterns initiated by Campbell, et. al. Restricted growth functions are of interest because they are in bijection with set partitions. We examine the case when a restricted growth function contains a pattern exactly $k$ times, where $k=0$ corresponds to pattern avoidance. We prove results for several statistic and pattern combinations in the case when $k=1$ and define a new type of Wilf equivalence for these patterns. We also examine a poset related to $M(n)$, the poset of integer partitions into distinct parts, and give a conjecture on the new poset's unimodality. We begin with a brief history of the field and end with a list of conjectures.
$K$ block set partition patterns and statistics
A set partition $σ$ of $[n]=\{1,\cdots ,n\}$ contains another set partition $ω$ if a standardized restriction of $σ$ to a subset $S\subseteq[n]$ is equivalent to $ω$. Otherwise, $σ$ avoids $ω$. Sagan and Goyt have determined the cardinality of the avoidance classes for all sets of patterns on partitions of $[3]$. Additionally, there is a bijection between the set partitions and restricted growth functions (RGFs). Wachs and White defined four fundamental statistics on those RGFs. Sagan, Dahlberg, Dorward, Gerhard, Grubb, Purcell, and Reppuhn consider the distributions of these statistics over various avoidance classes and they obtained four variate analogues of the previously cited cardinality results. They did the first thorough study of these distributions. The analogues of their many results follows for set partitions with exactly $k$ blocks for a specified positive integer $k$. These analogues are discussed in this work.
A simple symmetric exclusion process driven by an asymmetric tracer particle

We consider an exclusion process on a periodic one-dimensional lattice where all particles perform simple symmetric exclusion at rate $1$ except for a single tracer particle, which performs partially simple asymmetric exclusion with rate $p$ to the right and rate $q$ to the left. This model was first considered by Ferrari, Goldstein and Lebowitz (Progr. Phys., 1985) as a test for the validity of the Einstein relation in microscopic systems.
The main thrust of this work is an exact solution for the steady state of this exclusion process. We show that the stationary probabilities factorize and give an exact formula for the nonequilibrium partition function. Perhaps surprisingly, we find that the nonequilibrium free energy in the steady state is not well-defined for this system in the thermodynamic limit for any values of $p$ and $q$ if $p \neq q$. We provide formulas for the current and two-point correlations. When the tracer particle performs asymmetric exclusion ($q=0$), the results are shown to simplify significantly and we find an unexpected connection with the combinatorics of set partitions. Finally, we study the system from the point of view of the tracer particle, the so-called environment process. In the environment process, we show that the density of particles decays exponentially with the scaled position in front of the tracer particle in the thermodynamic limit.
On joins of a clique and a co-clique as star complements in regular graphs

In this paper we consider $r$-regular graphs $G$ that admit the vertex set partition such that one of the induced subgraphs is the join of an $s$-vertex clique and a $t$-vertex co-clique and represents a star complement for an eigenvalue $μ$ of $G$. The cases in which one of the parameters $s, t$ is less than 2 or $μ=r$ are already resolved. It is conjectured in [J. Wang, X. Yuan, L. Liu, Regular graphs with a prescribed complete multipartite graph as a star complement, Linear Algebra Appl.~579 (2019) 302--319] that if $s, t\geq 2$ and $μ\neq r$, then $μ=-2, t=2$ and $G=\overline{(s+1)K_2}$. For $μ=-t$ we verify this conjecture to be true. We further study the case in which $μ\neq-t$ and confirm the conjecture provided $t^2-4μ^2t-4μ^3=0$. For the remaining possibility we determine the structure of a putative counterexample and relate its existence to the existence of a particular 2-class block design. It occurs that the smallest counterexample would have 1265 vertices.

The enumeration of inversion sequences avoiding a single pattern was initiated by Corteel--Martinez--Savage--Weselcouch and Mansour--Shattuck independently. Their work has sparked various investigations of generalized patterns in inversion sequences, including patterns of relation triples by Martinez and Savage, consecutive patterns by Auli and Elizalde, and vincular patterns by Lin and Yan. In this paper, we carried out the systematic study of inversion sequences avoiding two patterns of length $3$. Our enumerative results establish further connections to the OEIS sequences and some classical combinatorial objects, such as restricted permutations, weighted ordered trees and set partitions. Since patterns of relation triples are some special multiple patterns of length $3$, our results complement the work by Martinez and Savage. In particular, one of their conjectures regarding the enumeration of $(021,120)$-avoiding inversion sequences is solved.
Graph Universal Cycles of Combinatorial Objects

A connected digraph in which the in-degree of any vertex equals its out-degree is Eulerian; this baseline result is used as the basis of existence proofs for universal cycles (also known as ucycles or generalized deBruijn cycles or U-cycles) of several combinatorial objects. The existence of ucycles is often dependent on the specific representation that we use for the combinatorial objects. For example, should we represent the subset $\{2,5\}$ of $\{1,2,3,4,5\}$ as "25" in a linear string? Is the representation "52" acceptable? Or it it tactically advantageous (and acceptable) to go with $\{0,1,0,0,1\}$? In this paper, we represent combinatorial objects as graphs, as in \cite{bks}, and exhibit the flexibility and power of this representation to produce {\it graph universal cycles}, or {\it Gucycles}, for $k$-subsets of an $n$-set; permutations (and classes of permutations) of $[n]=\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$, and partitions of an $n$-set, thus revisiting the classes first studied in \cite{cdg}. Under this graphical scheme, we will represent $\{2,5\}$ as the subgraph $A$ of $C_5$ with edge set consisting of $\{2,3\}$ and $\{5,1\}$, namely the "second" and "fifth" edges in $C_5$. Permutations are represented via their permutation graphs, and set partitions through disjoint unions of complete graphs.
Height of records in partitions of a set
We study the restricted growth function associated with set partitions, and obtain exact formulas for the number of strong records with height one, the total of record heights over set of partitions, and the number of partitions with a given maximal height of strong records. We also extend some of these results to weak records.
$DIII$ clan combinatorics for the orthogonal Grassmannian
Borel subgroup orbits of the classical symmetric space $SO_{2n}/GL_n$ are parametrized by $DIII$ $(n,n)$-clans. We group the clans into "sects" corresponding to Schubert cells of the orthogonal Grassmannian, thus providing a cell decomposition for $SO_{2n}/GL_n$. We also compute a recurrence for the rank polynomial of the weak order poset on $DIII$ clans, and then describe explicit bijections between such clans, diagonally symmetric rook placements, certain pairs of minimally intersecting set partitions, and a class of weighted Delannoy paths. Clans of the largest sect are in bijection with fixed-point-free partial involutions.
