On Weyl modules of cyclotomic $q$-Schur algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study on Weyl modules of cyclotomic $q$-Schur algebras. In particular, we give the character formula of the Weyl modules by using the Kostka numbers and some numbers which are computed by a generalization of Littlewood-Richardson rule. We also study corresponding symmetric functions. Finally, we give some simple applications to modular representations of cyclotomic $q$-Schur algebras.

Relative symmetric polynomials and money change problem
This article is devoted to the number of non-negative solutions of the linear Diophantine equation $$ a_1t_1+a_2t_2+... a_nt_n=d, $$ where $a_1, ..., a_n$, and $d$ are positive integers. We obtain a relation between the number of solutions of this equation and characters of the symmetric group, using {\em relative symmetric polynomials}. As an application, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the space of the relative symmetric polynomials to be non-zero.

Generalizing Tanisaki's ideal via ideals of truncated symmetric functions
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 37 (2013), 167--199 • View PublicationBIB
We define a family of ideals $I_h$ in the polynomial ring $\mathbb{Z}[x_1,...,x_n]$ that are parametrized by Hessenberg functions $h$ (equivalently Dyck paths or ample partitions). The ideals $I_h$ generalize algebraically a family of ideals called the Tanisaki ideal, which is used in a geometric construction of permutation representations called Springer theory. To define $I_h$, we use polynomials in a proper subset of the variables ${x_1,...,x_n}$ that are symmetric under the corresponding permutation subgroup. We call these polynomials {\em truncated symmetric functions} and show combinatorial identities relating different kinds of truncated symmetric polynomials. We then prove several key properties of $I_h$, including that if $h>h'$ in the natural partial order on Dyck paths then $I_{h} \subset I_{h'}$, and explicitly construct a Gröbner basis for $I_h$. We use a second family of ideals $J_h$ for which some of the claims are easier to see, and prove that $I_h = J_h$. The ideals $J_h$ arise in work of Ding, Develin-Martin-Reiner, and Gasharov-Reiner on a family of Schubert varieties called partition varieties. Using earlier work of the first author, the current manuscript proves that the ideals $I_h = J_h$ generalize the Tanisaki ideals both algebraically and geometrically, from Springer varieties to a family of nilpotent Hessenberg varieties.

Loop symmetric functions and factorizing matrix polynomials
These are notes for my talk at ICCM 2010, Beijing. We survey some results, obtained jointly with Pavlo Pylyavskyy, concerning the ring of loop symmetric functions. Motivations from networks on surfaces, total positivity, crystal graphs, and discrete integrable systems are discussed.
Bijective evaluation of the connection coefficients of the double coset algebra
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper is devoted to the evaluation of the generating series of the connection coefficients of the double cosets of the hyperoctahedral group. Hanlon, Stanley, Stembridge (1992) showed that this series, indexed by a partition $ν$, gives the spectral distribution of some random real matrices that are of interest in random matrix theory. We provide an explicit evaluation of this series when $ν=(n)$ in terms of monomial symmetric functions. Our development relies on an interpretation of the connection coefficients in terms of locally orientable hypermaps and a new bijective construction between locally orientable partitioned hypermaps and some permuted forests.

Sharp Thresholds for Monotone Non Boolean Functions and Social Choice Theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
A key fact in the theory of Boolean functions $f : \{0,1\}^n \to \{0,1\}$ is that they often undergo sharp thresholds. For example: if the function $f : \{0,1\}^n \to \{0,1\}$ is monotone and symmetric under a transitive action with $\E_p[f] = \eps$ and $\E_q[f] = 1-\eps$ then $q-p \to 0$ as $n \to \infty$. Here $\E_p$ denotes the product probability measure on $\{0,1\}^n$ where each coordinate takes the value $1$ independently with probability $p$. The fact that symmetric functions undergo sharp thresholds is important in the study of random graphs and constraint satisfaction problems as well as in social choice. In this paper we prove sharp thresholds for monotone functions taking values in an arbitrary finite sets. We also provide examples of applications of the results to social choice and to random graph problems. Among the applications is an analog for Condorcet's jury theorem and an indeterminacy result for a large class of social choice functions.

On Cycles in Random Graphs
We consider the geometric random (GR) graph on the $d-$dimensional torus with the $L_σ$ distance measure ($1 \leq σ\leq \infty$). Our main result is an exact characterization of the probability that a particular labeled cycle exists in this random graph. For $σ= 2$ and $σ= \infty$, we use this characterization to derive a series which evaluates to the cycle probability. We thus obtain an exact formula for the expected number of Hamilton cycles in the random graph (when $σ= \infty$ and $σ= 2$). We also consider the adjacency matrix of the random graph and derive a recurrence relation for the expected values of the elementary symmetric functions evaluated on the eigenvalues (and thus the determinant) of the adjacency matrix, and a recurrence relation for the expected value of the permanent of the adjacency matrix. The cycle probability features prominently in these recurrence relations. We calculate these quantities for geometric random graphs (in the $σ= 2$ and $σ= \infty$ case) with up to $20$ vertices, and compare them with the corresponding quantities for the Erdös-Rényi (ER) random graph with the same edge probabilities. The calculations indicate that the threshold for rapid growth in the number of Hamilton cycles (as well as that for rapid growth in the permanent of the adjacency matrix) in the GR graph is lower than in the ER graph. However, as the number of vertices $n$ increases, the difference between the GR and ER thresholds reduces, and in both cases, the threshold $\sim \log(n)/n$. Also, we observe that the expected determinant can take very large values. This throws some light on the question of the maximal determinant of symmetric $0/1$ matrices.

A Pieri formula for Macdonald's spherical functions and polynomials
Published in Mathematische Zeitschrift, Volume 269, Issue 1 (2011), Page 281-292 • View PublicationBIB
We present explicit Pieri formulas for Macdonald's spherical functions (or generalized Hall-Littlewood polynomials associated with root systems) and their $q$-deformation the Macdonald polynomials. For the root systems of type $A$, our Pieri formulas recover the well-known Pieri formulas for the Hall-Littlewood and Macdonald symmetric functions due to Morris and Macdonald as special cases.
Supercharacters, symmetric functions in noncommuting variables, and related Hopf algebras
Published in Advances in Mathematics 229 (2012) 2310--2337 • View PublicationBIB
We identify two seemingly disparate structures: supercharacters, a useful way of doing Fourier analysis on the group of unipotent uppertriangular matrices with coefficients in a finite field, and the ring of symmetric functions in noncommuting variables. Each is a Hopf algebra and the two are isomorphic as such. This allows developments in each to be transferred. The identification suggests a rich class of examples for the emerging field of combinatorial Hopf algebras.

Laguerre and Meixner symmetric functions, and infinite-dimensional diffusion processes
Published in Journal of Mathematical Sciences (New York) 174 (2011), no. 1, 41-57 • View PublicationBIB
The Laguerre symmetric functions introduced in the note are indexed by arbitrary partitions and depend on two continuous parameters. The top degree homogeneous component of every Laguerre symmetric function coincides with the Schur function with the same index. Thus, the Laguerre symmetric functions form a two-parameter family of inhomogeneous bases in the algebra of symmetric functions. These new symmetric functions are obtained from the N-variate symmetric polynomials of the same name by a procedure of analytic continuation. The Laguerre symmetric functions are eigenvectors of a second order differential operator, which depends on the same two parameters and serves as the infinitesimal generator of an infinite-dimensional diffusion process X(t). The process X(t) admits approximation by some jump processes related to one more new family of symmetric functions, the Meixner symmetric functions. In equilibrium, the process X(t) can be interpreted as a time-dependent point process on the punctured real line R\{0}, and the point configurations may be interpreted as doubly infinite collections of particles of two opposite charges with log-gas-type interaction. The dynamical correlation functions of the equilibrium process have determinantal form: they are given by minors of the so-called extended Whittaker kernel, introduced earlier in a paper by Borodin and the author.
A Bijection between Atomic Partitions and Unsplitable Partitions
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 18 (2011) #P7 • View PublicationBIB
In the study of the algebra $\mathrm{NCSym}$ of symmetric functions in noncommutative variables, Bergeron and Zabrocki found a free generating set consisting of power sum symmetric functions indexed by atomic partitions. On the other hand, Bergeron, Reutenauer, Rosas, and Zabrocki studied another free generating set of $\mathrm{NCSym}$ consisting of monomial symmetric functions indexed by unsplitable partitions. Can and Sagan raised the question of finding a bijection between atomic partitions and unsplitable partitions. In this paper, we provide such a bijection.

On complete functions in Jucys-Murphy elements
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 16, 4 (2012) 677-707 • Search Publication
The problem of computing the class expansion of some symmetric functions evaluated in Jucys-Murphy elements appears in different contexts, for instance in the computation of matrix integrals. Recently, M. Lassalle gave a unified algebraic method to obtain some induction relations on the coefficients in this kind of expansion. In this paper, we give a simple purely combinatorial proof of his result. Besides, using the same type of argument, we obtain new simpler formulas. We also prove an analogous formula in the Hecke algebra of $(S_{2n},H_n)$ and use it to solve a conjecture of S. Matsumoto on the subleading term of orthogonal Weingarten function. Finally, we propose a conjecture for a continuous interpolation between both problems.

Partitions, rooks, and symmetric functions in noncommuting variables

Let $Π_n$ denote the set of all set partitions of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. We consider two subsets of $Π_n$, one connected to rook theory and one associated with symmetric functions in noncommuting variables. Let $\cE_n\sbeΠ_n$ be the subset of all partitions corresponding to an extendable rook (placement) on the upper-triangular board, $\cT_{n-1}$. Given $π\inΠ_m$ and $\si\inΠ_n$, define their {\it slash product\/} to be $π|\si=π\cup(\si+m)\inΠ_{m+n}$ where $\si+m$ is the partition obtained by adding $m$ to every element of every block of $\si$. Call $τ$ {\it atomic\/} if it can not be written as a nontrivial slash product and let $\cA_n\sbeΠ_n$ denote the subset of atomic partitions. Atomic partitions were first defined by Bergeron, Hohlweg, Rosas, and Zabrocki during their study of $NCSym$, the symmetric functions in noncommuting variables. We show that, despite their very different definitions, $\cE_n=\cA_n$ for all $n\ge0$. Furthermore, we put an algebra structure on the formal vector space generated by all rook placements on upper triangular boards which makes it isomorphic to $NCSym$. We end with some remarks and an open problem.

Strong sign-coherency of certain symmetric polynomials, with application to cluster algebras
For each positive integer n, we define a polynomial in the variables z_1,...,z_n with coefficients in the ring $\mathbb{Q}[q,t,r]$ of polynomial functions of three parameters q, t, r. These polynomials naturally arise in the context of cluster algebras. We conjecture that they are symmetric polynomials in z_1,...,z_n, and that their expansions in terms of monomial, Schur, complete homogeneous, elementary and power sum symmetric polynomials are sign-coherent.
k-shape poset and branching of k-Schur functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a combinatorial expansion of a Schubert homology class in the affine Grassmannian Gr_{SL_k} into Schubert homology classes in Gr_{SL_{k+1}}. This is achieved by studying the combinatorics of a new class of partitions called k-shapes, which interpolates between k-cores and k+1-cores. We define a symmetric function for each k-shape, and show that they expand positively in terms of dual k-Schur functions. We obtain an explicit combinatorial description of the expansion of an ungraded k-Schur function into k+1-Schur functions. As a corollary, we give a formula for the Schur expansion of an ungraded k-Schur function.

Skew quasisymmetric Schur functions and noncommutative Schur functions
Published in Adv. Math., 226:4492--4532 (2011) • View PublicationBIB
Recently a new basis for the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions $QSym$, called quasisymmetric Schur functions, has been introduced by Haglund, Luoto, Mason, van Willigenburg. In this paper we extend the definition of quasisymmetric Schur functions to introduce skew quasisymmetric Schur functions. These functions include both classical skew Schur functions and quasisymmetric Schur functions as examples, and give rise to a new poset $\mathcal{L}_C$ that is analogous to Young's lattice. We also introduce a new basis for the Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions $NSym$. This basis of $NSym$ is dual to the basis of quasisymmetric Schur functions and its elements are the pre-image of the Schur functions under the forgetful map $χ: NSym \rightarrow Sym$. We prove that the multiplicative structure constants of the noncommutative Schur functions, equivalently the coefficients of the skew quasisymmetric Schur functions when expanded in the quasisymmetric Schur basis, are nonnegative integers, satisfying a Littlewood-Richardson rule analogue that reduces to the classical Littlewood-Richardson rule under $χ$. As an application we show that the morphism of algebras from the algebra of Poirier-Reutenauer to $Sym$ factors through $NSym$. We also extend the definition of Schur functions in noncommuting variables of Rosas-Sagan in the algebra $NCSym$ to define quasisymmetric Schur functions in the algebra $NCQSym$. We prove these latter functions refine the former and their properties, and project onto quasisymmetric Schur functions under the forgetful map. Lastly, we show that by suitably labeling $\mathcal{L}_C$, skew quasisymmetric Schur functions arise in the theory of Pieri operators on posets.

Enumeration of connected Catalan objects by type
Published • View PublicationBIB
Noncrossing set partitions, nonnesting set partitions, Dyck paths, and rooted plane trees are four classes of Catalan objects which carry a notion of type. There exists a product formula which enumerates these objects according to type. We define a notion of `connectivity' for these objects and prove an analogous product formula which counts connected objects by type. Our proof of this product formula is combinatorial and bijective. We extend this to a product formula which counts objects with a fixed type and number of connected components. We relate our product formulas to symmetric functions arising from parking functions. We close by presenting an alternative proof of our product formulas communicated to us by Christian Krattenthaler which uses generating functions and Lagrange inversion.
