We resolve affirmatively some conjectures of Reiner, Stanton, and White \cite{ReinerComm} regarding enumeration of transportation matrices which are invariant under certain cyclic row and column rotations.
Our results are phrased in terms of the bicyclic sieving phenomenon introduced by Barcelo, Reiner, and Stanton \cite{BRSBiD}.
The proofs of our results use various tools from symmetric function theory such as the Stanton-White rim hook correspondence
\cite{SW} and results concerning the specialization of Hall-Littlewood polynomials due to Lascoux, Leclerc, and Thibon \cite{LLTUnity} \cite{LLTRibbon}.

We present a method to compute the class expansion of a symmetric function in the Jucys-Murphy elements of the symmetric group. We apply this method to one-row Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions, which interpolate between power sums and complete symmetric functions.
Hyperplane Arrangements and Diagonal Harmonics

In 2003, Haglund's {\sf bounce} statistic gave the first combinatorial interpretation of the $q,t$-Catalan numbers and the Hilbert series of diagonal harmonics. In this paper we propose a new combinatorial interpretation in terms of the affine Weyl group of type $A$. In particular, we define two statistics on affine permutations; one in terms of the Shi hyperplane arrangement, and one in terms of a new arrangement - which we call the Ish arrangement. We prove that our statistics are equivalent to the {\sf area'} and {\sf bounce} statistics of Haglund and Loehr. In this setting, we observe that {\sf bounce} is naturally expressed as a statistic on the root lattice. We extend our statistics in two directions: to "extended" Shi arrangements and to the bounded chambers of these arrangements. This leads to a (conjectural) combinatorial interpretation for all integral powers of the Bergeron-Garsia nabla operator applied to the elementary symmetric functions.

We study zonal characters which are defined as suitably normalized coefficients in the expansion of zonal polynomials in terms of power-sum symmetric functions. We show that the zonal characters, just like the characters of the symmetric groups, admit a nice combinatorial description in terms of Stanley's multirectangular coordinates of Young diagrams. We also study the analogue of Kerov polynomials, namely we express the zonal characters as polynomials in free cumulants and we give an explicit combinatorial interpretation of their coefficients. In this way, we prove two recent conjectures of Lassalle for Jack polynomials in the special case of zonal polynomials.

We prove the Murgnaghan--Nakayama rule for $k$-Schur functions of Lapointe and Morse, that is, we give an explicit formula for the expansion of the product of a power sum symmetric function and a $k$-Schur function in terms of $k$-Schur functions. This is proved using the noncommutative $k$-Schur functions in terms of the nilCoxeter algebra introduced by Lam and the affine analogue of noncommutative symmetric functions of Fomin and Greene.
The Pentagram Integrals on Inscribed Polygons

The pentagram map is a natural iteration on projective equivalence classes of (twisted) n-gons in the projective plane. It was recently proved ([OST]) that the pentagram map is completely integrable, with the complete set of Poisson commuting integrals given by the polynomials O1,...,O[n/2],On and E1,...,E[n/2],En, previously constructed in [S3]. These polynomials are somewhat reminiscent of the symmetric polynomials. It was observed in computer experiments that if a polygon is inscribed into a conic then Oi=Ei for all i. The goal of the paper is to prove this theorem. The proof is combinatorial, and it was also suggested by computer experimentation.
A quasisymmetric function generalization of the chromatic symmetric function

The chromatic symmetric function $X_G$ of a graph $G$ was introduced by Stanley. In this paper we introduce a quasisymmetric generalization $X^k_G$ called the $k$-chromatic quasisymmetric function of $G$ and show that it is positive in the fundamental basis for the quasisymmetric functions. Following the specialization of $X_G$ to $χ_G(λ)$, the chromatic polynomial, we also define a generalization $χ^k_G(λ)$ and show that evaluations of this polynomial for negative values generalize a theorem of Stanley relating acyclic orientations to the chromatic polynomial.

We show that the ring of translation invariant symmetric polynomials in n variables is isomorphic to the full polynomial ring in n-1 variables, in characteristic 0. We disprove a conjecture of Haldane regarding the structure of such polynomials. Our motivation is the fractional quantum Hall effect, where translation invariant (anti)symmetric complex n-variate polynomials characterize n-electron wavefunctions.

Consider the set of vectors over a field having non-zero coefficients only in a fixed sparse set and multiplication defined by convolution, or the set of integers having non-zero digits (in some base $b$) in a fixed sparse set. We show the existence of an optimal (resp. almost-optimal in the latter case) `magic' multiplier constant that provides a perfect hash function which transfers the information from the given sparse coefficients into consecutive digits. Studying the convolution case we also obtain a result of non-degeneracy for Schur functions as polynomials in the elementary symmetric functions in positive characteristic.

We prove that the subset of quasisymmetric polynomials conjectured by Bergeron and Reutenauer to be a basis for the coinvariant space of quasisymmetric polynomials is indeed a basis. This provides the first constructive proof of the Garsia-Wallach result stating that quasisymmetric polynomials form a free module over symmetric polynomials and that the dimension of this module is n!.

We give explicit formulae of Whittaker vectors for Virasoro algebra in terms of the Jack symmetric polynomials. Our fundamental tools are the Feigin-Fuchs bosonization and the split expression of the Calogero-Sutherland model given by Awata-Matsuo-Odake-Shiraishi.
Kernel function and quantum algebras
We introduce an analogue $K_n(x,z;q,t)$ of the Cauchy-type kernel function for the Macdonald polynomials, being constructed in the tensor product of the ring of symmetric functions and the commutative algebra $\mathcal{A}$ over the degenerate $\mathbb{C} \mathbb{P}^1$. We show that a certain restriction of $K_n(x,z;q,t)$ with respect to the variable $z$ is neatly described by the tableau sum formula of Macdonald polynomials. Next, we demonstrate that the integer level representation of the Ding-Iohara quantum algebra naturally produces the currents of the deformed $\mathcal{W}$ algebra. Then we remark that the $K_n(x,z;q,t)$ emerges in the highest-to-highest correlation function of the deformed $\mathcal{W}$ algebra.

Rotation symmetric Boolean functions have important applications in the design of cryptographic algorithms. In this paper, the Conjecture about rotation symmetric Boolean functions (RSBFs) of degree 3 proposed by Cusik and Stănică is proved. As a result, the nonlinearity of such kind of functions is determined.

We study symmetric polynomials whose variables are odd-numbered Jucys-Murphy elements. They define elements of the Hecke algebra associated to the Gelfand pair of the symmetric group with the hyperoctahedral group. We evaluate their expansions in zonal spherical functions and in double coset sums. These evaluations are related to integrals of polynomial functions over orthogonal groups. Furthermore, we give an extension of them, based on Jack polynomials.
Square Partitions and Catalan Numbers

For each integer $k\ge 1$, we define an algorithm which associates to a partition whose maximal value is at most $k$ a certain subset of all partitions. In the case when we begin with a partition $λ$ which is square, i.e $λ=λ_1\ge...\geλ_k>0$, and $λ_1=k,λ_k=1$, then applying the algorithm $\ell$ times gives rise to a set whose cardinality is either the Catalan number $c_{\ell-k+1}$ (the self dual case) or twice the Catalan number. The algorithm defines a tree and we study the propagation of the tree, which is not in the isomorphism class of the usual Catalan tree. The algorithm can also be modified to produce a two--parameter family of sets and the resulting cardinalities of the sets are the ballot numbers. Finally, we give a conjecture on the rank of a particular module for the ring of symmetric functions in $2\ell+m$ variables.
The (1-E)-transform in combinatorial Hopf algebras

We extend to several combinatorial Hopf algebras the endomorphism of symmetric functions sending the first power-sum to zero and leaving the other ones invariant. As a transformation of alphabets, this is the (1-E)-transform, where E is the exponential alphabet, whose elementary symmetric functions are e_n=1/n!. In the case of noncommutative symmetric functions, we recover Schocker's idempotents for derangement numbers [Discr. Math. 269 (2003), 239].
From these idempotents, we construct subalgebras of the descent algebras analogous to the peak algebras and study their representation theory. The case of WQSym leads to similar subalgebras of the Solomon-Tits algebras. In FQSym, the study of the transformation boils down to a simple solution of the Tsetlin library in the uniform case.

In this paper, we give a formula for the area of the triangle formed by the vertices that live on a given polynomial, and we generalize this formula to the volumes of $n$-simplices with vertices on a polynomial space curve. To prove these results, we use induction arguments and a well known identity for complete symmetric polynomials.

We study asymptotics of characters of the symmetric groups on a fixed conjugacy class. It was proved by Kerov that such a character can be expressed as a polynomial in free cumulants of the Young diagram (certain functionals describing the shape of the Young diagram). We show that for each genus there exists a universal symmetric polynomial which gives the coefficients of the part of Kerov character polynomials with the prescribed homogeneous degree. The existence of such symmetric polynomials was conjectured by Lassalle.
