We consider a deformation of Kerov character polynomials, linked to Jack symmetric functions. It has been introduced recently by M. Lassalle, who formulated several conjectures on these objects, suggesting some underlying combinatorics. We give a partial result in this direction, showing that some quantities are polynomials in the Jack parameter $α$ with prescribed degree. Our result has several interesting consequences in various directions. Firstly, we give a new proof of the fact that the coefficients of Jack polynomials expanded in the monomial or power-sum basis depend polynomially in $α$. Secondly, we describe asymptotically the shape of random Young diagrams under some deformation of Plancherel measure.
Partially Symmetric Functions are Efficiently Isomorphism-Testable

Given a function f: {0,1}^n \to {0,1}, the f-isomorphism testing problem requires a randomized algorithm to distinguish functions that are identical to f up to relabeling of the input variables from functions that are far from being so. An important open question in property testing is to determine for which functions f we can test f-isomorphism with a constant number of queries. Despite much recent attention to this question, essentially only two classes of functions were known to be efficiently isomorphism testable: symmetric functions and juntas.
We unify and extend these results by showing that all partially symmetric functions---functions invariant to the reordering of all but a constant number of their variables---are efficiently isomorphism-testable. This class of functions, first introduced by Shannon, includes symmetric functions, juntas, and many other functions as well. We conjecture that these functions are essentially the only functions efficiently isomorphism-testable.
To prove our main result, we also show that partial symmetry is efficiently testable. In turn, to prove this result we had to revisit the junta testing problem. We provide a new proof of correctness of the nearly-optimal junta tester. Our new proof replaces the Fourier machinery of the original proof with a purely combinatorial argument that exploits the connection between sets of variables with low influence and intersecting families.
Another important ingredient in our proofs is a new notion of symmetric influence. We use this measure of influence to prove that partial symmetry is efficiently testable and also to construct an efficient sample extractor for partially symmetric functions. We then combine the sample extractor with the testing-by-implicit-learning approach to complete the proof that partially symmetric functions are efficiently isomorphism-testable.

We introduce two families of symmetric functions generalizing the factorial Schur $P$- and $Q$- functions due to Ivanov. We call them $K$-theoretic analogues of factorial Schur $P$- and $Q$- functions. We prove various combinatorial expressions for these functions, e.g. as a ratio of Pfaffians, and a sum over excited Young diagrams. As a geometric application, we show that these functions represent the Schubert classes in the $K$-theory of torus equivariant coherent sheaves on the maximal isotropic Grassmannians of symplectic and orthogonal types. This generalizes a corresponding result for the equivariant cohomology given by the authors. We also discuss a remarkable property enjoyed by these functions, which we call the $K$-theoretic $Q$-cancellation property. We prove that the $K$-theoretic $P$-functions form a (formal) basis of the ring of functions with the $K$-theoretic $Q$-cancellation property.

The classical characteristic map associates symmetric functions to characters of the symmetric groups. There are two natural analogues of this map involving the Brauer algebra. The first of them relies on the action of the orthogonal or symplectic group on a space of tensors, while the second is provided by the action of this group on the symmetric algebra of the corresponding Lie algebra. We consider the second characteristic map both in the orthogonal and symplectic case, and calculate the images of central idempotents of the Brauer algebra in terms of the Schur polynomials. The calculation is based on the Okounkov--Olshanski binomial formula for the classical Lie groups. We also reproduce the hook dimension formulas for representations of the classical groups by deriving them from the properties of the primitive idempotents of the symmetric group and the Brauer algebra.

This paper is devoted to the explicit computation of generating series for the connection coefficients of two commutative subalgebras of the group algebra of the symmetric group, the class algebra and the double coset algebra. As shown by Hanlon, Stanley and Stembridge (1992), these series gives the spectral distribution of some random matrices that are of interest to statisticians. Morales and Vassilieva (2009, 2011) found explicit formulas for these generating series in terms of monomial symmetric functions by introducing a bijection between partitioned hypermaps on (locally) orientable surfaces and some decorated forests and trees. Thanks to purely algebraic means, we recover the formula for the class algebra and provide a new simpler formula for the double coset algebra. As a salient ingredient, we derive a new explicit expression for zonal polynomials indexed by partitions of type [a,b,1^(n-a-b)].
Macdonald processes

Macdonald processes are probability measures on sequences of partitions defined in terms of nonnegative specializations of the Macdonald symmetric functions and two Macdonald parameters q,t in [0,1). We prove several results about these processes, which include the following.
(1) We explicitly evaluate expectations of a rich family of observables for these processes. (2) In the case t=0, we find a Fredholm determinant formula for a q-Laplace transform of the distribution of the last part of the Macdonald-random partition. (3) We introduce Markov dynamics that preserve the class of Macdonald processes and lead to new "integrable" 2d and 1d interacting particle systems. (4) In a large time limit transition, and as q goes to 1, the particles of these systems crystallize on a lattice, and fluctuations around the lattice converge to O'Connell's Whittaker process that describe semi-discrete Brownian directed polymers. (5) This yields a Fredholm determinant for the Laplace transform of the polymer partition function, and taking its asymptotics we prove KPZ universality for the polymer (free energy fluctuation exponent 1/3 and Tracy-Widom GUE limit law). (6) Under intermediate disorder scaling, we recover the Laplace transform of the solution of the KPZ equation with narrow wedge initial data. (7) We provide contour integral formulas for a wide array of polymer moments. (8) This results in a new ansatz for solving quantum many body systems such as the delta Bose gas.

We present a unified approach to various examples of Markov dynamics on partitions studied by Borodin, Olshanski, Fulman, and the author. Our technique generalizes the Kerov's operators first appeared in [Okounkov, arXiv:math/0002135], and also stems from the study of duality of graded graphs in [Fomin, 1994].
Our main object is a countable branching graph carrying an sl(2,C)-module of a special kind. Using this structure, we introduce distinguished probability measures on the floors of the graph, and define two related types of Markov dynamics associated with these measures. We study spectral properties of the dynamics, and our main result is the explicit description of eigenfunctions of the Markov generator of one of the processes.
For the Young graph our approach reconstructs the z-measures on partitions and the associated dynamics studied by Borodin and Olshanski [arXiv:math-ph/0409075, arXiv:0706.1034]. The generator of the dynamics of [arXiv:math-ph/0409075] is diagonal in the basis of the Meixner symmetric functions introduced recently by Olshanski [arXiv:1009.2037, arXiv:1103.5848]. We give new proofs to some of the results of these two papers. Other graphs to which our technique is applicable include the Pascal triangle, the Kingman graph (with the two-parameter Poisson-Dirichlet measures), the Schur graph and the general Young graph with Jack edge multiplicities.

We introduce affine Stanley symmetric functions for the special orthogonal groups, a class of symmetric functions that model the cohomology of the affine Grassmannian, continuing the work of Lam and Lam, Schilling, and Shimozono on the special linear and symplectic groups, respectively. For the odd orthogonal groups, a Hopf-algebra isomorphism is given, identifying (co)homology Schubert classes with symmetric functions. For the even orthogonal groups, we conjecture an approximate model of (co)homology via symmetric functions. In the process, we develop type B and type D non-commutative k-Schur functions as elements of the nilCoxeter algebra that model homology of the affine Grassmannian. Additionally, Pieri rules for multiplication by special Schubert classes in homology are given in both cases. Finally, we present a type-free interpretation of Pieri factors, used in the definition of noncommutative k-Schur functions or affine Stanley symmetric functions for any classical type.

The Jacobi-Stirling numbers and the Legendre-Stirling numbers of the first and second kind were first introduced in [6], [7]. In this paper we note that Jacobi-Stirling numbers and Legendre-Stirling numbers are specializations of elementary and complete symmetric functions. We then study combinatorial interpretations of this specialization and obtain new combinatorial interpretations of the Jacobi-Stirling and Legendre-Stirling numbers.

The $q,t$-Catalan numbers can be defined using rational functions, geometry related to Hilbert schemes, symmetric functions, representation theory, Dyck paths, partition statistics, or Dyck words. After decades of intensive study, it was eventually proved that all these definitions are equivalent. In this paper, we study the similar situation for higher $q,t$-Catalan numbers, where the equivalence of the algebraic and combinatorial definitions is still conjectural. We compute the limits of several versions of the modified higher $q,t$-Catalan numbers and show that these limits equal the generating function for integer partitions. We also identify certain coefficients of the higher $q,t$-Catalan numbers as enumerating suitable integer partitions, and we make some conjectures on the homological significance of the Bergeron-Garsia nabla operator.

Snakes are analogues of alternating permutations defined for any Coxeter group. We study these objects from the point of view of combinatorial Hopf algebras, such as noncommutative symmetric functions and their generalizations. The main purpose is to show that several properties of the generating functions of snakes, such as differential equations or closed form as trigonometric functions, can be lifted at the level of noncommutative symmetric functions or free quasi-symmetric functions. The results take the form of algebraic identities for type B noncommutative symmetric functions, noncommutative supersymmetric functions and colored free quasi-symmetric functions.
The Entropy Influence Conjecture Revisited
In this paper, we prove that most of the boolean functions, $f : \{-1,1\}^n \rightarrow \{-1,1\}$ satisfy the Fourier Entropy Influence (FEI) Conjecture due to Friedgut and Kalai (Proc. AMS'96). The conjecture says that the Entropy of a boolean function is at most a constant times the Influence of the function. The conjecture has been proven for families of functions of smaller sizes. O'donnell, Wright and Zhou (ICALP'11) verified the conjecture for the family of symmetric functions, whose size is $2^{n+1}$. They are in fact able to prove the conjecture for the family of $d$-part symmetric functions for constant $d$, the size of whose is $2^{O(n^d)}$. Also it is known that the conjecture is true for a large fraction of polynomial sized DNFs (COLT'10). Using elementary methods we prove that a random function with high probability satisfies the conjecture with the constant as $(2 + δ)$, for any constant $δ> 0$.

We define new families of noncommutative symmetric functions and quasi-symmetric functions depending on two matrices of parameters, and more generally on parameters associated with paths in a binary tree. Appropriate specializations of both matrices then give back the two-vector families of Hivert, Lascoux, and Thibon and the noncommutative Macdonald functions of Bergeron and Zabrocki.

In this investigation of character tables of finite groups we study basic sets and associated representation theoretic data for complementary sets of conjugacy classes. For the symmetric groups we find unexpected properties of characters on restricted sets of conjugacy classes, like beautiful combinatorial determinant formulae for submatrices of the character table and Cartan matrices with respect to basic sets; we observe that similar phenomena occur for the transition matrices between power sum symmetric functions to bounded partitions and the $k$-Schur functions introduced by Lapointe and Morse. Arithmetic properties of the numbers occurring in this context are studied via generating functions.

We use the Pieri and Giambelli formulas of arXiv:0809.4966 and arXiv:1109.6669 and the calculus of raising operators developed in arXiv:0811.2781 and arXiv:0812.0639 to prove a tableau formula for eta polynomials of arXiv:1109.6669 and the Stanley symmetric functions which correspond to Grassmannian elements of the Weyl group $W_n$ of type $D_n$. We define the skew elements of $W_n$ and exhibit a bijection between the set of reduced words for any skew element $w$ in $W_n$ and a set of certain standard typed tableaux on a skew shape $λ/μ$ associated to $w$.
Operations on Graphs Increasing Some Graph Parameters
In this partly expository paper we discuss and describe some of our old and recent results on partial orders on the set (m,n)-graphs (i.e. graphs with n vertices and m edges) and some operations on graphs that are monotone with respect to these partial orders. The partial orders under consideration include those related with some Laplacian characteristics of graphs as well as with some probabilistic characteristics of graphs with randomly deleted edges. Section 2 provides some notions, notation, and simple observations. Section 3 contains some basic facts on the Laplacian polynomial of a graph. Section 4 describes various graph operation and their properties. In Section 5 we introduce some partial orders on the set of (m,n)-graphs related, in particular, with the graph Laplacian and the graph reliability (Laplacian posets and reliability posets}). Section 6 contains some old and recent results on the monotonicity of some graph operations with respect to Laplacian posets. Section 7 and 8 include some old and recent results on the monotonicity of some graph operations with respect to reliability posets and to some other parameters of graphs as well as some open problems. Section 9 contains some generalizations of the described results on weighted graphs.

The Jack polynomials P_λ^{(α)} at α=-(k+1)/(r-1) indexed by certain (k,r,N)-admissible partitions are known to span an ideal I^{(k,r)}_N of the space of symmetric functions in N variables. The ideal I^{(k,r)}_N is invariant under the action of certain differential operators which include half the Virasoro algebra. Moreover, the Jack polynomials in I^{(k,r)}_N admit clusters of size at most k: they vanish when k+1 of their variables are identified, and they do not vanish when only k of them are identified. We generalize most of these properties to superspace using orthogonal eigenfunctions of the supersymmetric extension of the trigonometric Calogero-Moser-Sutherland model known as Jack superpolynomials. In particular, we show that the Jack superpolynomials P_Λ^{(α)} at α=-(k+1)/(r-1) indexed by certain (k,r,N)-admissible superpartitions span an ideal {\mathcal I}^{(k,r)}_N of the space of symmetric polynomials in N commuting variables and N anticommuting variables. We prove that the ideal {\mathcal I}^{(k,r)}_N is stable with respect to the action of the negative-half of the super-Virasoro algebra. In addition, we show that the Jack superpolynomials in {\mathcal I}^{(k,r)}_N vanish when k+1 of their commuting variables are equal, and conjecture that they do not vanish when only k of them are identified. This allows us to conclude that the standard Jack polynomials with prescribed symmetry should satisfy similar clustering properties. Finally, we conjecture that the elements of {\mathcal I}^{(k,2)}_N provide a basis for the subspace of symmetric superpolynomials in N variables that vanish when k+1 commuting variables are set equal to each other.

We describe a method for constructing characters of combinatorial Hopf algebras by means of integrals over certain polyhedral cones. This is based on ideas from resurgence theory, in particular on the construction of well-behaved averages induced by diffusion processes on the real line. We give several interpretations and proofs of the main result in terms of noncommutative symmetric and quasisymmetric functions, as well as generalizations involving matrix quasi-symmetric functions. The interpretation of noncommutative symmetric functions as alien operators in resurgence theory is also discussed, and a new family of Lie idempotents of descent algebras is derived from this interpretation.
The boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph: A new approach

The Gelfand-Tsetlin graph is an infinite graded graph that encodes branching of irreducible characters of the unitary groups. The boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph has at least three incarnations --- as a discrete potential theory boundary, as the set of finite indecomposable characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary group, and as the set of doubly infinite totally positive sequences. An old deep result due to Albert Edrei and Dan Voiculescu provides an explicit description of the boundary; it can be realized as a region in an infinite-dimensional coordinate space.
The paper contains a novel approach to the Edrei-Voiculescu theorem. It is based on a new explicit formula for the number of semi-standard Young tableaux of a given skew shape (or of Gelfand-Tsetlin schemes of trapezoidal shape). The formula is obtained via the theory of symmetric functions, and new Schur-like symmetric functions play a key role in the derivation.
