Generalized Involution Models for Wreath Products
Published in Israel J. Math. 192 (2012) 157-195 • View PublicationBIB
We prove that if a finite group $H$ has a generalized involution model, as defined by Bump and Ginzburg, then the wreath product $H \wr S_n$ also has a generalized involution model. This extends the work of Baddeley concerning involution models for wreath products. As an application, we construct a Gelfand model for wreath products of the form $A \wr S_n$ with $A$ abelian, and give an alternate proof of a recent result due to Adin, Postnikov, and Roichman describing a particularly elegant Gelfand model for the wreath product $\ZZ_r \wr S_n$. We conclude by discussing some notable properties of this representation and its decomposition into irreducible constituents, proving a conjecture of Adin, Roichman, and Postnikov's.

Refined Gelfand models for wreath products
Published • View PublicationBIB
In [F. Caselli, Involutory reflection groups and their models, J. Algebra 24 (2010), 370--393] it is constructed a uniform Gelfand model for all non-exceptional irreducible complex reflection groups which are involutory. This model can be naturally decomposed into the direct sum of submodules indexed by symmetric conjugacy classes, and in this paper we present a simple combinatorial description of the irreducible decomposition of these submodules if the group is the wreath product of a cyclic group with a symmetric group. This is attained by showing that such decomposition is compatible with the generalized Robinson-Schensted correspondence for these groups.

Eulerian quasisymmetric functions for the type B Coxeter group and other wreath product groups
Published in Adv. in Appl. Math. 48 (2012) 465-505 • View PublicationBIB
Eulerian quasisymmetric functions were introduced by Shareshian and Wachs in order to obtain a q-analog of Euler's exponential generating function formula for the Eulerian numbers. They are defined via the symmetric group, and applying the stable and nonstable principal specializations yields formulas for joint distributions of permutation statistics. We consider the wreath product of the cyclic group with the symmetric group, also known as the group of colored permutations. We use this group to introduce colored Eulerian quasisymmetric functions, which are a generalization of Eulerian quasisymmetric functions. We derive a formula for the generating function of these colored Eulerian quasisymmetric functions, which reduces to a formula of Shareshian and Wachs for the Eulerian quasisymmetric functions. We show that applying the stable and nonstable principal specializations yields formulas for joint distributions of colored permutation statistics, which generalize the Shareshian-Wachs q-analog of Euler's formula, formulas of Foata and Han, and a formula of Chow and Gessel.

Generalized crested products of Markov chains
Published in European J. Combin. 32, Issue 2 (2011), 243-257 • Search Publication
We define a finite Markov chain, called generalized crested product, which naturally appears as a generalization of the first crested product of Markov chains. A complete spectral analysis is developed and the $k$-step transition probability is given. It is important to remark that this Markov chain describes a more general version of the classical Ehrenfest diffusion model. As a particular case, one gets a generalization of the classical Insect Markov chain defined on the ultrametric space. Finally, an interpretation in terms of representation group theory is given, by showing the correspondence between the spectral decomposition of the generalized crested product and the Gelfand pairs associated with the generalized wreath product of permutation groups.

Cyclic derangements
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 17 (2010), no. 1, Research Paper 163, 14 pp • View PublicationBIB
A classic problem in enumerative combinatorics is to count the number of derangements, that is, permutations with no fixed point. Inspired by a recent generalization to facet derangements of the hypercube by Gordon and McMahon, we generalize this problem to enumerating derangements in the wreath product of any finite cyclic group with the symmetric group. We also give q- and (q, t)-analogs for cyclic derangements, generalizing results of Brenti and Gessel.

Schur rings over a product of Galois rings
Published in Beitr. Algebra Geom. 55 (2014), no. 1, 105-138 • View PublicationBIB
The recently developed theory of Schur rings over a finite cyclic group is generalized to Schur rings over a ring R being a product of Galois rings of coprime characteristics. It is proved that if the characteristic of R is odd, then as in the cyclic group case any pure Schur ring over R is the tensor product of a pure cyclotomic ring and Schur rings of rank 2 over non-fields. Moreover, it is shown that in contrast to the cyclic group case there are non-pure Schur rings over R that are not generalized wreath products.

On a pattern avoidance condition for the wreath product of cyclic groups with symmetric groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we extend to a non-consecutive case, the study of the pattern matching condition on the wreath product of the cyclic group and the symmetric group initiated by the authors in a previous paper. The main focus of our paper is (colored) patterns of length 2, although a number of enumerative results for longer patterns are also presented. A new non-trivial bijective interpretation for the Catalan numbers is found, in terms of simultaneously bi-avoiding two patterns in a wreath product.

Enumerating Wreath Products Via Garsia-Gessel Bijections
Published • View PublicationBIB
We generalize two bijections due to Garsia and Gessel to compute the generating functions of the two vector statistics $(\des_G, \maj,\ell_G, \col)$ and $(\des_G, \ides_G, \maj, \imaj, \col, \icol)$ over the wreath product of a symmetric group by a cyclic group. Here $\des_G$, $\ell_G$, $\maj$, $\col$, $\ides_G$, $\imaj_G$, and $\icol$ denote the number of descents, length, major index, color weight, inverse descents, inverse major index, and inverse color weight, respectively. Our main formulas generalize and unify several known identities due to Brenti, Carlitz, Chow-Gessel, Garsia-Gessel, and Reiner on various distributions of statistics over Coxeter groups of type $A$ and $B$.
New pattern matching conditions for wreath products of the cyclic groups with symmetric groups
We present several multi-variable generating functions for a new pattern matching condition on the wreath product of the cyclic group and the symmetric group. Our new pattern matching condition requires that the underlying permutations match in the usual sense of pattern matching for the symmetric group and that the corresponding sequence of signs match in the sense of words, rather than the exact equality of signs which has been previously studied. We produce the generating functions for the number of matches that occur in elements of the wreath product for any pattern of length 2 by applying appropriate homomorphisms from the ring of symmetric functions over an infinite number of variables to simple symmetric function identities. We also provide multi-variable generating functions for the distribution of non-overlapping matches and for the number of elements of the wreath product which have exactly 2 matches which do not overlap for several patterns of length 2.

Wreath Product Generalizations of the Triple $(S_{2n},H_{n},φ)$ and Their Spherical Functions
The symmetric group $S_{2n}$ and the hyperoctaheadral group $H_{n}$ is a Gelfand triple for an arbitrary linear representation $φ$ of $H_{n}$. Their $φ$-spherical functions can be caught as transition matrix between suitable symmetric functions and the power sums. We generalize this triplet in the term of wreath product. It is shown that our triplet are always to be a Gelfand triple. Furthermore we study the relation between their spherical functions and multi-partition version of the ring of symmetric functions.

Polyhedral Surfaces in Wedge Products
We introduce the wedge product of two polytopes. The wedge product is described in terms of inequality systems, in terms of vertex coordinates as well as purely combinatorially, from the corresponding data of its constituents. The wedge product construction can be described as an iterated ``subdirect product'' as introduced by McMullen (1976); it is dual to the ``wreath product'' construction of Joswig and Lutz (2005). One particular instance of the wedge product construction turns out to be especially interesting: The wedge products of polygons with simplices contain certain combinatorially regular polyhedral surfaces as subcomplexes. These generalize known classes of surfaces ``of unusually large genus'' that first appeared in works by Coxeter (1937), Ringel (1956), and McMullen, Schulz, and Wills (1983). Via ``projections of deformed wedge products'' we obtain realizations of some of the surfaces in the boundary complexes of 4-polytopes, and thus in R^3. As additional benefits our construction also yields polyhedral subdivisions for the interior and the exterior, as well as a great number of local deformations (``moduli'') for the surfaces in R^3. In order to prove that there are many moduli, we introduce the concept of ``affine support sets'' in simple polytopes. Finally, we explain how duality theory for 4-dimensional polytopes can be exploited in order to also realize combinatorially dual surfaces in R^3 via dual 4-polytopes.

The quiver of an algebra associated to the Mantaci-Reutenauer descent algebra and the homology of regular semigroups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We develop the homology theory of the algebra of a regular semigroup, which is a particularly nice case of a quasi-hereditary algebra in good characteristic. Directedness is characterized for these algebras, generalizing the case of semisimple algebras studied by Munn and Ponizovksy. We then apply homological methods to compute (modulo group theory) the quiver of a right regular band of groups, generalizing Saliola's results for a right regular band. Right regular bands of groups come up in the representation theory of wreath products with symmetric groups in much the same way that right regular bands appear in the representation theory of finite Coxeter groups via the Solomon-Tits algebra of its Coxeter complex. In particular, we compute the quiver of Hsiao's algebra, which is related to the Mantaci-Reutenauer descent algebra.

Automorphism groups of cyclic codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this article we study the automorphism groups of binary cyclic codes. In particular, we provide explicit constructions for codes whose automorphism groups can be described as (a) direct products of two symmetric groups or (b) iterated wreath products of several symmetric groups. Interestingly, some of the codes we consider also arise in the context of regular lattice graphs and permutation decoding.

Fix-Euler-Mahonian statistics on wreath products
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 1997 Clarke et al. studied a $q$-analogue of Euler's difference table for $n!$ using a key bijection $Ψ$ on symmetric groups. In this paper we extend their results to the wreath product of a cyclic group with the symmetric group. In particular we obtain a new mahonian statistic \emph{fmaf} on wreath products. We also show that Foata and Han's two recent transformations on the symmetric groups provide indeed a factorization of $Ψ$.

Terwilliger Algebras of Wreath Powers of One-Class Association Schemes
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study the subconstituent algebras, also called as Terwilliger algebras, of association schemes that are obtained as the wreath product of one-class association schemes $K_n=H(1, n)$ for $n\ge 2$. We find that the $d$-class association scheme $K_{n_{1}}\wr K_{n_{2}} \wr ... \wr K_{n_{d}}$ formed by taking the wreath product of $K_{n_{i}}$ has the triple-regularity property. We determine the dimension of the Terwilliger algebra for the association scheme $K_{n_{1}}\wr K_{n_{2}}\wr ... \wr K_ {n_{d}}$. We give a description of the structure of the Terwilliger algebra for the wreath power $(K_n)^{\wr d}$ for $n \geq 2$ by studying its irreducible modules. In particular, we show that the Terwilliger algebra of $(K_n)^{\wr d}$ is isomorphic to $M_{d+1}(\mathbb{C})\oplus M_1(\mathbb{C})^{\oplus \frac12d(d+1)}$ for $n\ge3$, and $M_{d+1}(\mathbb{C})\oplus M_1(\mathbb{C})^{\oplus \frac12d(d-1)}$ for $n=2$.

Free quasi-symmetric functions and descent algebras for wreath products, and noncommutative multi-symmetric functions
Published in Discrete Mathematics 310 (2010), 3584-3606 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce analogs of the Hopf algebra of Free quasi-symmetric functions with bases labelled by colored permutations. When the color set is a semigroup, an internal product can be introduced. This leads to the construction of generalized descent algebras associated with wreath products $Γ\wr\SG_n$ and to the corresponding generalizations of quasi-symmetric functions. The associated Hopf algebras appear as natural analogs of McMahon's multisymmetric functions. As a consequence, we obtain an internal product on ordinary multi-symmetric functions. We extend these constructions to Hopf algebras of colored parking functions, colored non-crossing partitions and parking functions of type B.

Quasi-invariant and super-coinvariant polynomials for the generalized symmetric group
Published in Formal Power Series and Algebraic Combinatorics, Linköping : Suède (2003) • Search Publication
The aim of this work is to extend the study of super-coinvariant polynomials, to the case of the generalized symmetric group $G_{n,m}$, defined as the wreath product $C_m\wr§_n$ of the symmetric group by the cyclic group. We define a quasi-symmetrizing action of $G_{n,m}$ on $\Q[x_1,...,x_n]$, analogous to those defined by Hivert in the case of $§_n$. The polynomials invariant under this action are called quasi-invariant, and we define super-coinvariant polynomials as polynomials orthogonal, with respect to a given scalar product, to the quasi-invariant polynomials with no constant term. Our main result is the description of a Gröbner basis for the ideal generated by quasi-invariant polynomials, from which we dedece that the dimension of the space of super-coinvariant polynomials is equal to $m^n C_n$ where $C_n$ is the $n$-th Catalan number.

Polynômes quasi-invariants et super-coinvariants pour le groupe symétrique généralisé
Published in Annales des sciences mathématiques du Québec 27, 2 (2003) 111-121 • Search Publication
A classical result of Artin states that the ideal generated by symmetric polynomials in $n$ variables is of codimension $n!$. The author, F. Bergeron and N. Bergeron have recently obtained a surprising analogous in the case of quasi-symmetric polynomials. In this case, the ideal is of codimension given by $C_n$, the $n$-th Catalan number. Quasi-symmetric polynomials are the invariants of a certain action of the symmetric group $S_n$ defined by F. Hivert. The aim of this work is to generalize these results to the wreath product $S_n\wr \Z_m$, also known as the generalized symmetric group $G\nm$. We first define a quasi-symmetrizing action of $G\nm$ on $\C[x_1,...,x_n]$, then obtain a description of the invariants and the codimension of the associated ideal, which is $m^n C_n$.
