Hook-content formulae for symplectic and orthogonal tableaux
Published in Can. Math. Bull. 55 (2012) 462-473 • View PublicationBIB
By considering the specialisation $s_λ(1,q,q^2,...,q^{n-1})$ of the Schur function, Stanley was able to describe a formula for the number of semistandard Young tableaux of shape $λ$ in terms of two properties of the boxes in the diagram for $λ$. Using specialisations of symplectic and orthogonal Schur functions, we derive corresponding formulae, first given by El Samra and King, for the number of semistandard symplectic and orthogonal $λ$-tableaux.

Enumeration formulas for Young tableaux in a diagonal strip
Published • View PublicationBIB
We derive combinatorial identities, involving the Bernoulli and Euler numbers, for the numbers of standard Young tableaux of certain skew shapes. This generalizes the classical formulas of D. Andre on the number of up-down permutations. The analysis uses a transfer operator approach extending the method of Elkies, combined with an identity expressing the volume of a certain polytope in terms of a Schur function.

An Explicit Construction of Type A Demazure Atoms
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, Vol. 29, (2009), No. 3, p.295--313 • View PublicationBIB
Demazure characters of type A, which are equivalent to key polynomials, have been decomposed by Lascoux and Schützenberger into standard bases. We prove that the resulting polynomials, which we call Demazure atoms, can be obtained from a certain specialization of nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials. This combinatorial interpretation for Demazure atoms accelerates the computation of the right key associated to a semi-standard Young tableau. Utilizing a related construction, we provide a new combinatorial description for the key polynomials.

Queues, stores, and tableaux
Published in Journal of Applied Probability 42, 4 (2005) 1145-1167 • Search Publication
Consider the single server queue with an infinite buffer and a FIFO discipline, either of type M/M/1 or Geom/Geom/1. Denote by A the arrival process and by s the services. Assume the stability condition to be satisfied. Denote by D the departure process in equilibrium and by r the time spent by the customers at the very back of the queue. We prove that (D,r) has the same law as (A,s) which is an extension of the classical Burke Theorem. In fact, r can be viewed as the departures from a dual storage model. This duality between the two models also appears when studying the transient behavior of a tandem by means of the RSK algorithm: the first and last row of the resulting semi-standard Young tableau are respectively the last instant of departure in the queue and the total number of departures in the store.

Towards the Distribution of the Size of a Largest Planar Matching and Largest Planar Subgraph in Random Bipartite Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We address the following question: When a randomly chosen regular bipartite multi--graph is drawn in the plane in the ``standard way'', what is the distribution of its maximum size planar matching (set of non--crossing disjoint edges) and maximum size planar subgraph (set of non--crossing edges which may share endpoints)? The problem is a generalization of the Longest Increasing Sequence (LIS) problem (also called Ulam's problem). We present combinatorial identities which relate the number of r-regular bipartite multi--graphs with maximum planar matching (maximum planar subgraph) of at most d edges to a signed sum of restricted lattice walks in Z^d, and to the number of pairs of standard Young tableaux of the same shape and with a ``descend--type'' property. Our results are obtained via generalizations of two combinatorial proofs through which Gessel's identity can be obtained (an identity that is crucial in the derivation of a bivariate generating function associated to the distribution of LISs, and key to the analytic attack on Ulam's problem). We also initiate the study of pattern avoidance in bipartite multigraphs and derive a generalized Gessel identity for the number of bipartite 2-regular multigraphs avoiding a specific (monotone) pattern.

A jeu de taquin theory for increasing tableaux, with applications to K-theoretic Schubert calculus
Published in Algebra Number Theory 3 (2009), no. 2, 121--148. • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a theory of jeu de taquin for increasing tableaux, extending fundamental work of [Schützenberger '77] for standard Young tableaux. We apply this to give a new combinatorial rule for the K-theory Schubert calculus of Grassmannians via K-theoretic jeu de taquin, providing an alternative to the rules of [Buch '02] and others. This rule naturally generalizes to give a conjectural root-system uniform rule for any minuscule flag variety G/P, extending [Thomas-Yong '06]. We also present analogues of results of Fomin, Haiman, Schensted and Schützenberger.
The descent statistic on involutions is not log-concave
Published • View PublicationBIB
We establish a combinatorial connection between the sequence $(i_{n,k})$ counting the involutions on $n$ letters with $k$ descents and the sequence $(a_{n,k})$ enumerating the semistandard Young tableaux on $n$ cells with $k$ symbols. This allows us to show that the sequences $(i_{n,k})$ are not log-concave for some values of $n$, hence answering a conjecture due to F. Brenti.

An Extension of the Foata Map to Standard Young Tableaux
Published in Sem. Loth. Comb. 56 (2006), Article B56C • Search Publication
We define an inversion statistic on standard Young tableaux. We prove that this statistic has the same distribution over SYT(λ) as the major index statistic by exhibiting a bijection on SYT(λ) in the spirit of the Foata map on permutations.

On the structure of regular $B_2$-type crystals
For simply-laced Kac-Moody algebras $\frak g$, Stembridge (2003) proposed a `local' axiomatization of crystal graphs of representations of $U_q(\frak g)$. In this paper we propose axioms for edge-2-colored graphs which characterize the crystals of integrable representations of $U_q(sp(4))$, regular crystal graphs of $B_2$-type. An edge-colored directed graph which obeys our Axioms (K0)--(K5) is called an R-{\em graph} (for brevity), and our main result is that the regular crystals of $B_2$-type are R-graphs and vice versa. We give a direct combinatorial construction for the crystals in question. On this way we introduce a new, so-called {\em crossing model}, which does not exploit Young tableaux. This combinatorial model consists of a two-component graph of a rather simple form and of a certain set of integer-valued functions on its vertices.

Abstract Young Pairs for Signed Permutation Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
The notion of an Abstract Young (briefly: AY) representation is a natural generalization of the classical Young orthogonal form. The AY representations of the symmetric group are characterized by Adin, Brenti and Roichman in [U2]. In this paper we present several types of minimal AY representation of $D_n$ associated with standard D-Young tableaux which are a natural generalization of usual standard Young tableaux. We give an explicit combinatorial view (the representation space is spanned by certain standard tableaux while the action is a generalized Young orthogonal form) of representations which are induced into $D_n$ from minimal AY representations of one of the natural embeddings of $S_n$ into $D_n$. Then we show that these induced representations are isomorphic to the direct sum of two or three minimal AY representations of $D_n$ also associated with standard D-Young tableaux. It is done by constructing a continuous path between representation matrices where one end of the path is the mentioned direct sum; another end is the classical form of induced representation. In the last section we briefly explain how the similar results may be obtained for the group $B_n$ instead of $D_n$.

What is a Young tableau?
Published in Notices of the AMS, February 2007, Vol. 54, No. 2 • Search Publication
Young tableaux are classical combinatorial objects playing recurring and varied roles in representation theory, algebraic geometry and commutative algebra. This article is a short exposition on Young tableaux, written for the "WHAT IS...?" series of the Notices of the American Mathematical Society. It describes some of their properties and applications.
Random Sorting Networks
Published in Adv. Math. 215 (2007), no. 2, 839-868 • View PublicationBIB
A sorting network is a shortest path from 12...n to n...21 in the Cayley graph of S_n generated by nearest-neighbour swaps. We prove that for a uniform random sorting network, as n->infinity the space-time process of swaps converges to the product of semicircle law and Lebesgue measure. We conjecture that the trajectories of individual particles converge to random sine curves, while the permutation matrix at half-time converges to the projected surface measure of the 2-sphere. We prove that, in the limit, the trajectories are Holder-1/2 continuous, while the support of the permutation matrix lies within a certain octagon. A key tool is a connection with random Young tableaux.

Truncations of random unitary matrices and Young tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $U$ be a matrix chosen randomly, with respect to Haar measure, from the unitary group $U(d).$ We express the moments of the trace of any submatrix of $U$ as a sum over partitions whose terms count certain standard and semistandard Young tableaux. Using this combinatorial interpretation, we obtain a simple closed form for the moments of an individual entry of a random unitary matrix and use this to deduce that the entries converge in moments to standard complex Gaussian random variables. In addition, we recover a well-known theorem of E. Rains which shows that the moments of the trace of a random unitary matrix enumerate permutations with restricted increasing subsequence length.

On the number of plane partitions and non isomorphic subgroup towers of abelian groups
We study the number of $k \times r$ plane partitions, weighted on the sum of the first row. Using Erhart reciprocity, we prove an identity for the generating function. For the special case $k=1$ this result follows from the classical theory of partitions, and for $k=2$ it was proved in Andersson-Bhowmik with another method. We give an explicit formula in terms of Young tableaux, and study the corresponding zeta-function. We give an application on the average orders of towers of abelian groups. In particular we prove that the number of isomorphism classes of ``subgroups of subgroups of ... ($k-1$ times) ... of abelian groups'' of order at most $N$ is asymptotic to $c_k N (\log N)^{k-1}$. This generalises results from Erd{\H o}s-Szekeres and Andersson-Bhowmik where the corresponding result was proved for $k=1$ and $k=2$.

Non-Crossing Tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
In combinatorics there is a well-known duality between non-nesting and non-crossing objects. In algebra there are many objects which are standard, for example Standard Young Tableaux, Standard Monomials, Standard Bitableaux. We adopt a point of view that these standard objects are really non-nesting, and we find their non-crossing counterparts.

Pieri's Formula for Generalized Schur Polynomials
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 26 (2007), no. 1, 27-45 • View PublicationBIB
Young's lattice, the lattice of all Young diagrams, has the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence, the correspondence between certain matrices and pairs of semi-standard Young tableaux with the same shape. Fomin introduced generalized Schur operators to generalize the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence. In this sense, generalized Schur operators are generalizations of semi-standard Young tableaux. We define a generalization of Schur polynomials as expansion coefficients of generalized Schur operators. We show that the commutating relation of generalized Schur operators implies Pieri's formula to generalized Schur polynomials.

A Decomposition of Schur functions and an analogue of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth Algorithm
Published in Séminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire, 60 (2008), Art. B57e, 24pp • Search Publication
We exhibit a weight-preserving bijection between semi-standard Young tableaux and semi-skyline augmented fillings to provide a combinatorial proof that the Schur functions decompose into nonsymmetric functions indexed by compositions. The insertion procedure involved in the proof leads to an analogue of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth Algorithm for semi-skyline augmented fillings. This procedure commutes with the RSK algorithm, and therefore retains many of its properties.

Motivic decomposition of a generalized Severi-Brauer variety
Let A and B be two central simple algebras of a prime degree n over a field F generating the same subgroup in the Brauer group. We show that the Chow motive of a Severi-Brauer variety SB(A) is a direct summand of the motive of a generalized Severi-Brauer variety SB_d(B) if and only if [A]=d[B] or [A]=-d[B] in the Brauer group. The proof uses methods of Schubert calculus and combinatorial properties of Young tableaux, e.g., Robinson-Schensted correspondence.

Tableau complexes
Published in Israel J. Math. 163 (2008), 317--343. • View PublicationBIB
Let X,Y be finite sets and T a set of functions from X -> Y which we will call "tableaux". We define a simplicial complex whose facets, all of the same dimension, correspond to these tableaux. Such "tableau complexes" have many nice properties, and are frequently homeomorphic to balls, which we prove using vertex decompositions. In our motivating example, the facets are labeled by semistandard Young tableaux, and the more general interior faces are labeled by Buch's set-valued semistandard tableaux. One vertex decomposition of this "Young tableau complex" parallels Lascoux's transition formula for vexillary double Grothendieck polynomials. Consequently, we obtain formulae (both old and new) for these polynomials. In particular, we present a common generalization of the formulae of Wachs and Buch, each of which implies the classical tableau formula for Schur polynomials.

Stationary or static space-times and Young tableaux
Published in J.Phys.Conf.Ser.30:152-162,2006 • View PublicationBIB
Algebraic curvature tensors possess generators which can be formed from symmetric or alternating tensors S, A or tensors θwith an irreducible (2,1)-symmetry. In differential geometry examples of curvature formulas are known which contain generators on the basis of S or A realized by differentiable tensor fields in a natural way. We show that certain curvature formulas for stationary or static space-times contain such differentiable realizations of generators based on θ. The tensor θis connected with the timelike Killing vector field of the space-time. θlies in a special symmetry class from the infinite family of irreducible (2,1)-symmetry classes. We determine characteristics of this class. In particular, this class allows a maximal reduction of the length of the curvature formulas. We use a projection formalism by Vladimirov, Young symmetrizers and Littlewood-Richardson products. Computer calculations were carried out by means of the packages Ricci and PERMS.
