On orbital variety closures in sl(n). II. Descendants of a Richardson orbital variety
Published in Journal of Algebra 271, 2004, pp 698-724 • View PublicationBIB
For a semisimple Lie algebra g the orbit method attempts to assign representations of g to (coadjoint) orbits in g*. Orbital varieties are particular Lagrangian subvarieties of such orbits leading to highest weight representations of g. In sl(n) orbital varieties are described by Young tableaux. In this paper we consider so called Richardson orbital varieties in sl(n). A Richardson orbital variety is an orbital variety whose closure is a standard nilradical. We show that in sl(n) a Richardson orbital variety closure is a union of orbital varieties. We give a complete combinatorial description of such closures in terms of Young tableaux. This is the second paper in the series of three papers devoted to a combinatorial description of orbital variety closures in sl(n) in terms of Young tableaux.

Effective Scalar Products for D-finite Symmetric Functions
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series A, Volume 112 , Issue 1 (October 2005), Pages: 1 - 43 • View PublicationBIB
Many combinatorial generating functions can be expressed as combinations of symmetric functions, or extracted as sub-series and specializations from such combinations. Gessel has outlined a large class of symmetric functions for which the resulting generating functions are D-finite. We extend Gessel's work by providing algorithms that compute differential equations these generating functions satisfy in the case they are given as a scalar product of symmetric functions in Gessel's class. Examples of applications to k-regular graphs and Young tableaux with repeated entries are given. Asymptotic estimates are a natural application of our method, which we illustrate on the same model of Young tableaux. We also derive a seemingly new formula for the Kronecker product of the sum of Schur functions with itself.

On the sign-imbalance of partition shapes
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 111 (2005) 190-203 • Search Publication
Let the sign of a standard Young tableau be the sign of the permutation you get by reading it row by row from left to right, like a book. A conjecture by Richard Stanley says that the sum of the signs of all SYTs with n squares is 2^[n/2]. We present a stronger theorem with a purely combinatorial proof using the Robinson-Schensted correspondence and a new concept called chess tableaux. We also prove a sharpening of another conjecture by Stanley concerning weighted sums of squares of sign-imbalances. The proof is built on a remarkably simple relation between the sign of a permutation and the signs of its RS-corresponding tableaux.

The Computational Complexity of Rules for the Character Table of S_n
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Murnaghan-Nakayama rule is the classical formula for computing the character table of S_n. Y. Roichman has recently discovered a rule for the Kazhdan-Lusztig characters of q-Hecke algebras of type A, which can also be used for the character table of S_n. For each of the two rules, we give an algorithm for computing entries in the character table of S_n. We then analyze the computational complexity of the two algorithms, and in the case of characters indexed by partitions in the (k,l)-hook, compare their complexities to each other. It turns out that the algorithm based on the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule requires far less operations than the other algorithm. We note the algorithms' complexities' relation to two enumeration problems of Young diagrams and Young tableaux.

Four positive formulae for type A quiver polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give four positive formulae for the (equioriented type A) quiver polynomials of Buch and Fulton. All four formulae are combinatorial, in the sense that they are expressed in terms of combinatorial objects of certain types: Zelevinsky permutations, lacing diagrams, Young tableaux, and pipe dreams (also known as rc-graphs). Three of our formulae are multiplicity-free and geometric, meaning that their summands have coefficient 1, and correspond bijectively to components of a torus-invariant scheme. The remaining (presently non-geometric) formula was conjectured for by Buch and Fulton in terms of factor sequences of Young tableaux; our proof of it proceeds by way of a new characterization of the tableaux counted by quiver constants. All four formulae come naturally in ``doubled'' versions, two for `double quiver polynomials', and the other two for their stable versions, the `double quiver functions', where setting half the variables equal to the other half specializes to the ordinary case.

Rational representations of Yangians associated with skew Young diagrams
Published in Math. Z. 247 (2004), 21-63 • View PublicationBIB
Let $GL_M$ be general linear Lie group over the complex field. The irreducible rational representations of the group $GL_M$ are labeled by pairs of partitions $μ$ and $\tildeμ$ such that the total number of non-zero parts of $μ$ and $\tildeμ$ does not exceed $M$. Let $U$ be the representation of $GL_M$ corresponding to such a pair. Regard the direct product $GL_N\times GL_M$ as a subgroup of $GL_{N+M}$. Let $V$ be the irreducible rational representation of the group $GL_{N+M}$ corresponding to a pair of partitions $λ$ and $\tildeλ$. Consider the vector space $W=Hom_{G_M}(U,V)$. It comes with a natural action of the group $GL_N$. Let $n$ be sum of parts of $λ$ less the sum of parts of $μ$. Let $\tilde{n}$ be sum of parts of $\tildeλ$ less the sum of parts of $\tildeμ$. For any choice of two standard Young tableaux of skew shapes $λ/μ$ and $\tildeλ/\tildeμ$ respectively, we realize $W$ as a subspace in the tensor product of $n$ copies of the defining $N$-dimensional representation of $GL_N$, and of $\tilde{n}$ copies of the contragredient representation. This subspace is determined as the image of a certain linear operator $F$ in the tensor product, given by explicit multiplicative formula. When M=0 and $W=V$ is an irreducible representation of $GL_N$, we recover the classical realization of $V$ as a subspace in the space of all traceless tensors. Then the operator $F$ can be regarded as the rational analogue of the Young symmetrizer, corresponding to the chosen standard tableau of shape $λ$. Even in the special case M=0, our formula for the operator $F$ is new. Our results are applications of representation theory of the Yangian of the Lie algebra $gl_N$.

q-Narayana numbers and the flag h-vector of $J({\bf 2} \times {\bf n})$
Published in Discrete Math. 281 (2004), no. 1-3, 67--81 • Search Publication
The Narayana numbers are $N(n,k) = {1 \over n}{n \choose k}{n \choose {k+1}}$. There are several natural statistics on Dyck paths with a distribution given by N(n,k). We show the equidistribution of Narayana statistics by computing the flag h-vector of $J({\bf 2} \times {\bf n})$ in different ways. In the process we discover new Narayana statistics and provide co-statistics for which the Narayana statistics in question have a distribution given by Fürlinger and Hofbauers q-Narayana numbers. We also interpret the h-vector in terms of semi-standard Young tableaux, which enables us to express the q-Narayana numbers in terms of Schur functions.

Representations of twisted Yangians associated with skew Young diagrams
Published in Selecta Math. 10 (2004), 71-129 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G_M$ be one of the complex Lie groups $O_M$ and $Sp_M$. The irreducible finite-dimensional representations of the group $G_M$ are labeled by partitions $μ$ satisfying certain extra conditions. Let $U$ be the representation of $G_M$ corresponding to $μ$. Regard the direct product $G_N\times G_M$ as a subgroup of $G_{N+M}$. Let $V$ be the irreducible representation of $G_{N+M}$ corresponding to a partition $λ$. Consider the vector space $W=Hom_{G_M}(U,V)$. It comes with a natural action of the group $G_N$. Let $n$ be sum of parts of $λ$ less the sum of parts of $μ$. For any choice of a standard Young tableau of skew shape $λ/μ$, we realize $W$ as a subspace in the tensor product of $n$ copies of the defining $N$-dimensional representation of $G_N$. This subspace is determined as the image of a certain linear operator $F(M)$ in the tensor product, given by an explicit formula. When M=0 and $W=V$ is an irreducible representation of $G_N$, we recover the classical realization of $V$ as a subspace in the space of all traceless tensors. Then the operator F(0) can be regarded as the analogue for $G_N$ of the Young symmetrizer, corresponding to the chosen standard tableau of shape $λ$. Even in the special case M=0, our formula for the operator $F(M)$ is new. Our results are applications of representation theory of the twisted Yangian, corresponding to $G_N$. In particular, $F(M)$ is an intertwining operator between two representations of the twisted Yangian in the $n$-fold tensor product.
Vicious walkers, friendly walkers and Young tableaux III: Between two walls
Published in J. Statist. Phys. 110 (2003), 1069-1086. • View PublicationBIB
We derive exact and asymptotic results for the number of star and watermelon configurations of vicious walkers confined to lie between two impenetrable walls, as well as for the analogous problem for $\infty$-friendly walkers. Our proofs make use of results from symmetric function theory and the theory of basic hypergeometric series.

On Convergence of Moments for Random Young Tableaux and a Random Growth Model
In recent work of Baik, Deift and Rains convergence of moments was established for the limiting joint distribution of the lengths of the first k rows in random Young tableaux. The main difficulty was obtaining a good estimate for the tail of the distribution and this was accomplished through a highly nontrival Riemann-Hilbert analysis. Here we give a simpler derivation. The same method is used to establish convergence of moments for a random growth model.

Subsequence containment by involutions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Inspired by work of McKay, Morse, and Wilf, we give an exact count of the involutions in S_n which contain a given permutation τin S_k as a subsequence; this number depends on the patterns of the first j values of τfor 1<=j<=k. We then use this to define a partition of S_k, analogous to Wilf-classes in the study of pattern avoidance, and examine properties of this equivalence. In the process, we show that a permutation τ_1...τ_k is layered iff, for 1<=j<=k, the pattern of τ_1...τ_j is an involution. We also obtain a result of Sagan and Stanley counting the standard Young tableaux of size $n$ which contain a fixed tableau of size $k$ as a subtableau.

On the Enumeration of Skew Young Tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
We extend work of McKay, Morse, and Wilf by giving exact formulas and asymptotic formulas for the number of skew Young tableaux T in two situations: (1) the "inside shape" and total number of cells of T are fixed, and (2) the inside shape of T is fixed. The proofs use the theory of symmetric functions and estimates for irreducible characters of the symmetric group due to Thoma, Vershik, Kerov, and Biane.

Random Young Tableaux and Combinatorial Identities
Published in Seminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire, 46 (2001), paper B46e • Search Publication
We derive new combinatorial identities which may be viewed as multivariate analogs of summation formulas for hypergeometric series. As in the previous paper [Re], we start with probability distributions on the space of the infinite Young tableaux. Then we calculate the probability that the entry of a random tableau at a given box equals n=1,2,.... Summing these probabilities over n and equating the result to 1 we get a nontrivial identity. Our choice for the initial distributions is motivated by the recent work on harmonic analysis on the infinite symmetric group and related topics.

Noncommutative symmetric functions VI: Free quasi-symmetric functions and related algebras
Published in International Journal of Algebra and Computation 12 (2002), 671-717 • View PublicationBIB
This article is devoted to the study of several algebras which are related to symmetric functions, and which admit linear bases labelled by various combinatorial objects: permutations (free quasi-symmetric functions), standard Young tableaux (free symmetric functions) and packed integer matrices (matrix quasi-symmetric functions). Free quasi-symmetric functions provide a kind of noncommutative Frobenius characteristic for a certain category of modules over the 0-Hecke algebras. New examples of indecomposable $H_n(0)$-modules are discussed, and the homological properties of $H_n(0)$ are computed for small $n$. Finally, the algebra of matrix quasi-symmetric functions is interpreted as a convolution algebra.

On the hypersurface orbital varieties of sl(N,C)

We study the structure of hypersurface orbital varieties of sl(N,C) (those that are hypersurfaces in the nilradical of some parabolic subalgebra) and how information about this structure is encoded in the standard Young tableau associated to it by the Robinson-Schensted algorithm. We present a conjecture for the exact form of the unique non-linear defining equations of hypersurface orbital varieties and proofs of the conjecture in certain cases.

Performance evaluation of modulation methods: a combinatorial approach
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper is devoted to the presentation of a combinatorial approach for analyzing the performance of an important modulation protocol used in mobile telecommunications. We show in particular that a fundamental formula, in this context, is in fact highly connected with a slight modification of a very classical algorithm of Knuth that realizes a bijection between pairs of Young tableaux of conjugated shapes and $\{0,1\}$-matrices. These new considerations allowed us to obtain the very first results with respect to important specializations (for practical applications) of the performance analysis formula that we studied.

A Fredholm Determinant Identity and the Convergence of Moments for Random Young Tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
We obtain an identity between Fredholm determinants of two kinds of operators, one acting on functions on the unit circle and the other acting on functions on a subset of the integers. This identity is a generalization of an identity between a Toeplitz determinant and a Fredholm determinant that has appeared in the random permutation context. Using this identity, we prove, in particular, convergence of moments for arbitrary rows of a random Young diagram under Plancherel measure.

The distributions of the entries of Young tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let T^* be a standard Young tableau of k cells. We show that the probability that a Young tableau of n cells contains T^* as a subtableau is, in the limit n -> \infty, equal to ν(π(T^*))/k!, where π(T^*) is the shape (= Ferrers diagram) of T^* and ν(π) is the number of all tableaux of shape π. In other words, the probability that a large tableau contains T^* is equal to the number of tableaux whose shape is that of T^*, divided by k!. We give several applications, to the probabilities that a set of prescribed entries will appear in a set of prescribed cells of a tableau, and to the probabilities that subtableaux of given shapes will occur. Our argument rests on a notion of quasirandomness of families of permutations, and we give sufficient conditions for this to hold. We then extend these results by finding an explicit formula for the limiting probability that a Young tableau has a given set of entries in a given set of positions. The result is that the limiting probability that a Young tableau has a prescribed set of entries k_1,k_2,..., k_m in a prescribed set of m cells is equal to the sum of the measures of all tableaux on K cells (K=\max{\{k_i\}}) that have the given entries in the given positions, where the measure of a tableau of K cells is the number of tableaux of its shape divided by K!. In the proof we also develop conditions that ensure the quasirandomness of certain families of permutations.

On Descents in Standard Young Tableaux
Published in Electronic J. Combinatorics 7(2000), R59 • Search Publication
In this paper, explicit formulae for the expectation and the variance of descent functions on random standard Young tableaux are presented. Using these, it is shown that the normalized variance, $V/E^2$, is bounded if and only if a certain inequality relating tableau shape to the descent function holds.
