On the Running Time of Hypergraph Bootstrap Percolation
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, vol. 30, no. 2.46, Jun. 2023 • View Publication • BIB
Given $r\geq2$ and an $r$-uniform hypergraph $F$, the $F$-bootstrap process starts with an $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$ and, in each time step, every hyperedge which "completes" a copy of $F$ is added to $H$. The maximum running time of this process has been recently studied in the case that $r=2$ and $F$ is a complete graph by Bollobás, Przykucki, Riordan and Sahasrabudhe [Electron. J. Combin. 24(2) (2017), Paper No. 2.16], Matzke [arXiv:1510.06156v2] and Balogh, Kronenberg, Pokrovskiy and Szabó [arXiv:1907.04559v1]. We consider the case that $r\geq3$ and $F$ is the complete $r$-uniform hypergraph on $k$ vertices. Our main results are that the maximum running time is $Θ\left(n^r\right)$ if $k\geq r+2$ and $Ω\left(n^{r-1}\right)$ if $k=r+1$. For the case $k=r+1$, we conjecture that our lower bound is optimal up to a constant factor when $r=3$, but suspect that it can be improved by more than a constant factor for large $r$.

Topological string amplitudes and Seiberg-Witten prepotentials from the counting of dimers in transverse flux
Published • View Publication • BIB
Important illustration to the principle ``partition functions in string theory are $τ$-functions of integrable equations'' is the fact that the (dual) partition functions of $4d$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories solve Painlevé equations. In this paper we show a road to self-consistent proof of the recently suggested generalization of this correspondence: partition functions of topological string on local Calabi-Yau manifolds solve $q$-difference equations of non-autonomous dynamics of the ``cluster-algebraic'' integrable systems. We explain in details the ``solutions'' side of the proposal. In the simplest non-trivial example we show how $3d$ box-counting of topological string partition function appears from the counting of dimers on bipartite graph with the discrete gauge field of ``flux'' $q$. This is a new form of topological string/spectral theory type correspondence, since the partition function of dimers can be computed as determinant of the linear $q$-difference Kasteleyn operator. Using WKB method in the ``melting'' $q\to 1$ limit we get a closed integral formula for Seiberg-Witten prepotential of the corresponding $5d$ gauge theory. The ``equations'' side of the correspondence remains the intriguing topic for the further studies.

Asymptotic formula for the $M_2$-ranks of overpartitions
Let $\overline{N}_2(a,c,n)$ be the number of overpartitions of $n$ whose the $M_2$-rank is congruent to $a$ modulo $c$. In this paper, we obtain the asymptotic formula of $\overline{N}_2(a,c,n)$ utilizing the Ingham Tauberian Theorem. As applications, we derive inequalities concerning with $\overline{N}_2(a,c,n)$ including its strict concavity and log-concavity.

Additional Fibonacci-Bernoulli relations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We continue our study on relationships between Fibonacci (Lucas) numbers and Bernoulli numbers and polynomials. The derivations of our results are based on functional equations for the respective generating functions, which in our case are combinations of hyperbolic functions. Special cases and some corollaries will highlight interesting aspects of our findings.

Simplicial effective resistance and enumeration of spanning trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph can be regarded as an electrical network in which each edge is a resistor. This point of view relates combinatorial quantities, such as the number of spanning trees, to electrical ones such as effective resistance. The second and third authors have extended the combinatorics/electricity analogy to higher dimension and expressed the simplicial analogue of effective resistance as a ratio of weighted tree enumerators. In this paper, we first use that ratio to prove a new enumeration formula for color-shifted complexes, confirming a conjecture by Aalipour and the first author, and generalizing a result of Ehrenborg and van Willigenburg on Ferrers graphs. We then use the same technique to recover an enumeration formula for shifted complexes, first proved by Klivans and the first and fourth authors. In each case, we add facets one at a time, and give explicit expressions for simplicial effective resistances of added facets by constructing high-dimensional analogues of currents and voltages (respectively homological cycles and cohomological cocycles).

Packing, Hitting, and Colouring Squares
Given a finite family of squares in the plane, the packing problem asks for the maximum number $ν$ of pairwise disjoint squares among them, while the hitting problem for the minimum number $τ$ of points hitting all of them. Clearly, $τ\ge ν$. Both problems are known to be NP-hard, even for families of axis-parallel unit squares. The main results of this work provide the first non-trivial bounds for the $τ/ ν$ ratio for not necessarily axis-parallel squares. We establish an upper bound of $6$ for unit squares and $10$ for squares of varying sizes. The worst ratios we can provide with examples are $3$ and $4$, respectively. For comparison, in the axis-parallel case, the supremum of the considered ratio is in the interval $[\frac{3}{2},2]$ for unit squares and $[\frac{3}{2},4]$ for squares of varying sizes. The methods we introduced for the $τ/ν$ ratio can also be used to relate the chromatic number $χ$ and clique number $ω$ of squares by bounding the $χ/ω$ ratio by $6$ for unit squares and $9$ for squares of varying sizes. The $τ/ ν$ and $χ/ω$ ratios have already been bounded before by a constant for "fat" objects, the fattest and simplest of which are disks and squares. However, while disks have received significant attention, specific bounds for squares have remained essentially unexplored. This work intends to fill this gap.

Polynomial identities that involve binomial coefficients, double and rising factorials and their probabilistic interpretations and proofs
We formulate several polynomial identities. One side of these identities has a nice simple form. Whereas the other has a form of a polynomial whose coefficients contain binomial coefficients double factorials or (and) rising factorials. The origins and the proofs of these identities are probabilistic. However, their form suggests universal applications in simplifying expressions. Many useful simplifying formulae are presented in the sequel.

On Mixing Distributions Via Random Orthogonal Matrices and the Spectrum of the Singular Values of Multi-Z Shaped Graph Matrices
In this paper, we introduce and analyze a new operation $\circ_{R}$ which mixes two distributions $Ω$ and $Ω'$ via a random orthogonal matrix. In particular, we take $Ω\circ_R Ω'$ to be the limit as $n \to \infty$ of the distribution of singular values of $DRD'$ where $D$ and $D'$ are $n \times n$ diagonal matrices whose diagonal entries have distributions $Ω$ and $Ω'$ respectively and $R$ is a random $n \times n$ orthogonal matrix. We show that $\circ_R$ has several nice properties. We first observe that $\circ_R$ is commutative and associative and compute the moments of $Ω\circ_R Ω'$ in terms of the moments of $Ω$ and $Ω'$. We then show that $\circ_R$ interacts very nicely with the spectrum of the singular values of Z-shaped and multi-Z-shaped graph matrices. This allows us to answer the question posed by our previous paper of how to describe the spectrum of the singular values of Z-shaped and multi-Z-shaped graph matrices when the input distribution is not $\{-1,1\}$. In our analysis, we show that the moments of our distributions are closely connected to non-crossing partitions and prove a number of new results on non-crossing partitions which may be of independent interest.
Fully reducible simple Venn diagrams
We generalize Venn diagrams in spaces of arbitrary dimension $\geq 2$ and study simple Venn diagrams with the reducing property. Three equivalent conditions for a simple Venn diagram to reduce it completely and a classification of those diagrams is discussed. For example, we show that a simple $m$-dimensional $n$-Venn diagram is fully reducible if $n\leq m+1$ and conjecture that the converse is also true. An application of the generalized Venn diagrams and some more open problems are given.

Restricted Birkhoff polytopes and Ehrhart period collapse
Published in Discrete & Computational Geometry, 2024 • View Publication • BIB
We show that the polytopes obtained from the Birkhoff polytope by imposing additional inequalities restricting the "longest increasing subsequence" have Ehrhart quasi-polynomials which are honest polynomials, even though they are just rational polytopes in general. We do this by defining a continuous, piecewise-linear bijection to a certain Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope. This bijection is not an integral equivalence but it respects lattice points in the appropriate way to imply that the two polytopes have the same Ehrhart (quasi-)polynomials. In fact, the bijection is essentially the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence.

Locally free Caldero-Chapoton functions via reflections
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the reflections of locally free Caldero-Chapoton functions associated to representations of Geiss-Leclerc-Schröer's quivers with relations for symmetrizable Cartan matrices. We prove that for rank 2 cluster algebras, non-initial cluster variables are expressed as locally free Caldero-Chapoton functions of locally free indecomposable rigid representations. Our method gives rise to a new proof of the locally free Caldero-Chapoton formulas obtained by Geiss-Leclerc-Schröer in Dynkin cases. For general acyclic skew-symmetrizable cluster algebras, we prove the formula for any non-initial cluster variable obtained by almost sink and source mutations.

Lovàsz's hom-counting theorem by inclusion-exclusion principle
Let ${\mathcal C}$ be the category of finite graphs. Lovàsz (1967) shows that if $|\mathrm{Hom}(X,A)|=|\mathrm{Hom}(X,B)|$ holds for any $X$, then $A$ is isomorphic to $B$. Pultr (1973) gives a categorical generalization using a similar argument. Both proofs assume that each object has a finite number of isomorphism classes of subobjects. Generalizations without this assumption are given by Dawar, Jakl, and Reggio (2021) and Regio (2021). Here another generalization without this assumption is given, with a shorter proof. Examples of categories are given, for which our theorem is applicable, but the existing theorems are not.

Equatorially balanced C4-face-magic labelings on Klein bottle grid graphs
For a graph $G = (V, E)$ embedded in the Klein bottle, let $\mathcal{F}(G)$ denote the set of faces of $G$. Then, $G$ is called a $C_k$-face-magic Klein bottle graph if there exists a bijection $f: V(G) \to \{1, 2, \dots, |V(G)|\}$ such that for any $F \in \mathcal{F}(G)$ with $F \cong C_k$, the sum of all the vertex labelings along $C_k$ is a constant $S$. Let $x_v =f(v)$ for all $v\in V(G)$. We call $\{x_v : v\in V(G)\}$ a $C_k$-face-magic Klein bottle labeling on $G$. We consider the $m \times n$ grid graph, denoted by $\mathcal{K}_{m,n}$, embedded in the Klein bottle in the natural way. We show that for $m,n\ge 2$, $\mathcal{K}_{m,n}$ admits a $C_4$-face-magic Klein bottle labeling if and only if $n$ is even. We say that a $C_4$-face-magic Klein bottle labeling $\{x_{i,j}: (i,j) \in V(\mathcal{K}_{m,n}) \}$ on $\mathcal{K}_{m,n}$ is equatorially balanced if $x_{i,j} + x_{i,n+1-j} = \tfrac{1}{2} S$ for all $(i,j) \in V(\mathcal{K}_{m,n})$. We show that when $m$ is odd, a $C_4$-face-magic Klein bottle labeling on $\mathcal{K}_{m,n}$ must be equatorially balanced. Also when $m$ is odd, we show that (up to symmetries on the Klein bottle) the number of $C_4$-face-magic Klein bottle labelings on the $m \times 4$ Klein bottle grid graph is $2^m \, (m-1)! \, τ(m)$, where $τ(m)$ is the number of positive divisors of $m$. Furthermore, let $m\ge 3$ be an odd integer and $n \ge 6$ be an even integer. Then, the minimum number of distinct $C_4$-face-magic Klein bottle labelings $X$ on $\mathcal{K}_{m,n}$ (up to symmetries on a Klein bottle) is either $(5\cdot 2^m)(m-1)!$ if $n \equiv 0\pmod{4}$, or $(6\cdot 2^m)(m-1)!$ if $n \equiv 2\pmod{4}$.

Clique Polynomials and Chordal Graphs
The ordinary generating function of the number of complete subgraphs of $G$ is called a clique polynomial of $G$ and is denoted by $C(G,x)$. A real root of $C(G,x)$ is called a clique root of the graph $G$. Hajiabolhasan and Mehrabadi showed that the clique polynomial has always a real root in the interval $[-1,0)$. Moreover, they showed that the class of triangle-free graphs has only clique roots. Here, we generalize their result by showing that the class of $K_4$-free chordal graphs has also only clique roots. Moreover, we show that this class has always a clique root $-1$. We finally conclude the paper with several important questions and conjectures.
Quasisymmetric harmonics of the exterior algebra
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the ring of quasisymmetric polynomials in $n$ anticommuting (fermionic) variables. Let $R_n$ denote the polynomials in $n$ anticommuting variables. The main results of this paper show the following interesting facts about quasisymmetric polynomials in anticommuting variables: (1) The quasisymmetric polynomials in $R_n$ form a commutative sub-algebra of $R_n$. (2) There is a basis of the quotient of $R_n$ by the ideal $I_n$ generated by the quasisymmetric polynomials in $R_n$ that is indexed by ballot sequences. The Hilbert series of the quotient is given by $$ \text{Hilb}_{R_n/I_n}(q) = \sum_{k=0}^{\lfloor{n/2}\rfloor} f^{(n-k,k)} q^k\,,$$ where $f^{(n-k,k)}$ is the number of standard tableaux of shape $(n-k,k)$. (3) There is a basis of the ideal generated by quasisymmetric polynomials that is indexed by sequences that break the ballot condition

The chromatic number of heptagraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A hole is an induced cycle of length at least 4. A graph is called a pentagraph if it has no cycles of length 3 or 4 and has no holes of odd length at least 7, and is called a heptagraph if it has no cycles of length less than 7 and has no holes of odd length at least 9. Let $ł\ge 2$ be an integer. The current authors proved that a graph is 4- colorable if it has no cycles of length less than $2ł+1$ and has no holes of odd length at least $2ł+3$. Confirming a conjecture of Plummer and Zha, Chudnovsky and Seymour proved that every pentagraph is 3-colorable. Following their idea, we show that every heptagraph is 3-colorable.

A classification of finite primitive IBIS groups with alternating socle
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a finite permutation group on $Ω$. An ordered sequence $(ω_1,\ldots,ω_\ell)$ of elements of $Ω$ is an irredundant base for $G$ if the pointwise stabilizer is trivial and no point is fixed by the stabilizer of its predecessors. If all irredundant bases of $G$ have the same cardinality, $G$ is said to be an IBIS group. Lucchini, Morigi and Moscatiello have proved a theorem reducing the problem of classifying finite primitive IBIS groups $G$ to the case that the socle of $G$ is either abelian or non-abelian simple. In this paper, we classify the finite primitive IBIS groups having socle an alternating group. Moreover, we propose a conjecture aiming to give a classification of all almost simple primitive IBIS groups.
The Jacobian of a graph and graph automorphisms
In the present paper we investigate the faithfulness of certain linear representations of groups of automorphisms of a graph $X$ in the group of symmetries of the Jacobian of $X$. As a consequence we show that if a $3$-edge-connected graph $X$ admits a nonabelian semiregular group of automorphims, then the Jacobian of $X$ cannot be cyclic. In particular, Cayley graphs of degree at least three arising from nonabelian groups have non-cyclic Jacobians. While the size of the Jacobian of $X$ is well-understood - it is equal to the number of spanning trees of $X$ - the combinatorial interpretation of the rank of Jacobian of a graph is unknown. Our paper presents a contribution in this direction.

Simultaneous coloring of vertices and incidences of Outerplanar graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A $vi$-simultaneous proper $k$-coloring of a graph $G$ is a coloring of all vertices and incidences of the graph in which any two adjacent or incident elements in the set $V(G)\cup I(G)$ receive distinct colors, where $I(G)$ is the set of incidences of $G$. The $vi$-simultaneous chromatic number, denoted by $χ_{vi}(G)$, is the smallest integer $k$ such that $G$ has a $vi$-simultaneous proper $k$-coloring. In [M. Mozafari-Nia, M. N. Iradmusa, A note on coloring of $\frac{3}{3}$-power of subquartic graphs, Vol. 79, No.3, 2021] $vi$-simultaneous proper coloring of graphs with maximum degree $4$ is investigated and they conjectured that for any graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ\geq 2$, $vi$-simultaneous proper coloring of $G$ is at most $2Δ+1$. In [M. Mozafari-Nia, M. N. Iradmusa, Simultaneous coloring of vertices and incidences of graphs, arXiv:2205.07189, 2022] the correctness of the conjecture for some classes of graphs such as $k$-degenerated graphs, cycles, forests, complete graphs, regular bipartite graphs is investigated. In this paper, we prove that the $vi$-simultaneous chromatic number of any outerplanar graph $G$ is either $Δ+2$ or $Δ+3$, where $Δ$ is the maximum degree of $G$.
