Computing the vertex connectivity of a locally maximal 1-plane graph in linear time
It is known that the vertex connectivity of a planar graph can be computed in linear time. We extend this result to the class of locally maximal 1-plane graphs: graphs that have an embedding with at most one crossing per edge such that the endpoints of each pair of crossing edges induce the complete graph $K_4$

A quick estimate for the volume of a polyhedron
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $P$ be a bounded polyhedron defined as the intersection of the non-negative orthant ${\Bbb R}^n_+$ and an affine subspace of codimension $m$ in ${\Bbb R}^n$. We show that a simple and computationally efficient formula approximates the volume of $P$ within a factor of $γ^m$, where $γ>0$ is an absolute constant. The formula provides the best known estimate for the volume of transportation polytopes from a wide family.
Elementary Proofs of Infinitely Many Congruences for $k$-Elongated Partition Diamonds
Published in Discrete Mathematics 345, no. 11 (2022), Article 113021 • View Publication • BIB
In 2007, Andrews and Paule published the eleventh paper in their series on MacMahon's partition analysis, with a particular focus on broken $k$-diamond partitions. On the way to broken $k$-diamond partitions, Andrews and Paule introduced the idea of $k$-elongated partition diamonds. Recently, Andrews and Paule revisited the topic of $k$-elongated partition diamonds. Using partition analysis and the Omega operator, they proved that the generating function for the partition numbers $d_k(n)$ produced by summing the links of $k$-elongated plane partition diamonds of length $n$ is given by $\frac{(q^2;q^2)_\infty^k}{(q;q)_\infty^{3k+1}}$ for each $k\geq 1.$ A significant portion of their recent paper involves proving several congruence properties satisfied by $d_1, d_2$ and $d_3$, using modular forms as their primary proof tool. In this work, our goal is to extend some of the results proven by Andrews and Paule in their recent paper by proving infinitely many congruence properties satisfied by the functions $d_k$ for an infinite set of values of $k.$ The proof techniques employed are all elementary, relying on generating function manipulations and classical $q$-series results.

Single-conflict colorings of degenerate graphs
Published in Journal of Graph Theory; Proceedings: European Conference on Combinatorics, Graph Theory and Applications, EUROCOMB 2023 • View Publication • BIB
We consider the single-conflict coloring problem, a graph coloring problem in which each edge of a graph receives a forbidden ordered color pair. The task is to find a vertex coloring such that no two adjacent vertices receive a pair of colors forbidden at an edge joining them. We show that for any assignment of forbidden color pairs to the edges of a $d$-degenerate graph $G$ on $n$ vertices of edge-multiplicity at most $\log \log n$, $O(\sqrt{ d } \log n)$ colors are always enough to color the vertices of $G$ in a way that avoids every forbidden color pair. This answers a question of Dvořák, Esperet, Kang, and Ozeki for simple graphs (Journal of Graph Theory 2021).

Covexillary Schubert varieties and Kazhdan-Lusztig Polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
We establish combinatorial and inductive formulas for Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials associated to covexillary elements in classical types, extending results of Boe, Lascoux-Schützenberger, Sankaran-Vanchinathan, and Zelevinsky for Grassmannians of classical types. The proof uses intersection cohomology theory and the isomorphism of Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties from Anderson-Ikeda-Jeon-Kawago.

Relative poset polytopes and semitoric degenerations
Published • View Publication • BIB
The two best studied toric degenerations of the flag variety are those given by the Gelfand--Tsetlin and FFLV polytopes. Each of them degenerates further into a particular monomial variety which raises the problem of describing the degenerations intermediate between the toric and the monomial ones. Using a theorem of Zhu one may show that every such degeneration is semitoric with irreducible components given by a regular subdivision of the corresponding polytope. This leads one to study the parts that appear in such subdivisions as well as the associated toric varieties. It turns out that these parts lie in a certain new family of poset polytopes which we term relative poset polytopes: each is given by a poset and a weakening of its order relation. In this paper we give an in depth study of (both common and marked) relative poset polytopes and their toric varieties in the generality of an arbitrary poset. We then apply these results to degenerations of flag varieties. We also show that our family of polytopes generalizes the family studied in a series of papers by Fang, Fourier, Litza and Pegel while sharing their key combinatorial properties such as pairwise Ehrhart-equivalence and Minkowski-additivity.

A note on stability properties of powers of polymatroidal ideals
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $I$ be a matroidal ideal of degrre $d$ of a polynomial ring $R=K[x_1,...,x_n]$, where $K$ is a field. Let astab$(I)$ and dstab$(I)$ be the smallest integer $n$ for which Ass$(I^n)$ and depth$(I^n)$ stabilize, respectively. In this paper, we show that astab$(I)=1$ if and only if dstab$(I)=1$. Moreover, we prove that if $d=3$, then ${\rm astab}(I)={\rm dstab}(I)$. Furthermore, we show that if $I$ is an almost square-free Veronese type ideal of degree $d$, then ${\rm astab}(I)={\rm dstab}(I)=\lceil\frac{n-1}{n-d}\rceil$.

Proof of a Conjecture on Hankel Determinants for Dyck Paths with Restricted Peak Heights
Published • View Publication • BIB
For any integer $m\geq 2$ and $r \in \{1,\dots, m\}$, let $f_n^{m,r}$ denote the number of $n$-Dyck paths whose peak's heights are $im+r$ for some integer $i$. We find the generating function of $f_n^{m,r}$ satisfies a simple algebraic functional equation of degree $2$. The $r=m$ case is particularly nice and we give a combinatorial proof. By using the Sulanke and Xin's continued fraction method, we calculate the Hankel determinants for $f_n^{m,r}$. The special case $r=m$ of our result solves a conjecture proposed by Chien, Eu and Fu. We also enriched the class of eventually periodic Hankel determinant sequences.

Disjointness graphs of short polygonal chains
Published • View Publication • BIB
The {\em disjointness graph} of a set system is a graph whose vertices are the sets, two being connected by an edge if and only if they are disjoint. It is known that the disjointness graph $G$ of any system of segments in the plane is {\em $χ$-bounded}, that is, its chromatic number $χ(G)$ is upper bounded by a function of its clique number $ω(G)$. Here we show that this statement does not remain true for systems of polygonal chains of length $2$. We also construct systems of polygonal chains of length $3$ such that their disjointness graphs have arbitrarily large girth and chromatic number. In the opposite direction, we show that the class of disjointness graphs of (possibly self-intersecting) \emph{$2$-way infinite} polygonal chains of length $3$ is $χ$-bounded: for every such graph $G$, we have $χ(G)\le(ω(G))^3+ω(G).$

On spectral distribution of sample covariance matrices from large dimensional and large $k$-fold tensor products
Published in Electronic Journal of Probability (2022) 27, 1-18 • View Publication • BIB
We study the eigenvalue distributions for sums of independent rank-one $k$-fold tensor products of large $n$-dimensional vectors. Previous results in the literature assume that $k=o(n)$ and show that the eigenvalue distributions converge to the celebrated Marčenko-Pastur law under appropriate moment conditions on the base vectors. In this paper, motivated by quantum information theory, we study the regime where $k$ grows faster, namely $k=O(n)$. We show that the moment sequences of the eigenvalue distributions have a limit, which is different from the Marčenko-Pastur law. As a byproduct, we show that the Marčenko-Pastur law limit holds if and only if $k=o(n)$ for this tensor model. The approach is based on the method of moments.

A characterization of the symmetry groups of mono-monostatic convex bodies
Published • View Publication • BIB
Answering a question of Conway and Guy in a 1968 paper, Lángi in 2021 proved the existence of a monostable polyhedron with $n$-fold rotational symmetry for any $n \geq 3$, and arbitrarily close to a Euclidean ball. In this paper we strengthen this result by characterizing the possible symmetry groups of all mono-monostatic smooth convex bodies and convex polyhedra. Our result also answers a stronger version of the question of Conway and Guy, asked in the above paper of Lángi.

Using a $q$-shuffle algebra to describe the basic module $V(Λ_0)$ for the quantized enveloping algebra $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the quantized enveloping algebra $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$ and its basic module $V(Λ_0)$. This module is infinite-dimensional, irreducible, integrable, and highest-weight. We describe $V(Λ_0)$ using a $q$-shuffle algebra in the following way. Start with the free associative algebra $\mathbb V$ on two generators $x,y$. The standard basis for $\mathbb V$ consists of the words in $x,y$. In 1995 M. Rosso introduced an associative algebra structure on $\mathbb V$, called a $q$-shuffle algebra. For $u,v\in \lbrace x,y\rbrace$ their $q$-shuffle product is $u\star v = uv+q^{(u,v)}vu$, where $( u,v) =2$ (resp. $(u,v) =-2$) if $u=v$ (resp. $u\not=v$). Let $\mathbb U$ denote the subalgebra of the $q$-shuffle algebra $\mathbb V$ that is generated by $x, y$. Rosso showed that the algebra $\mathbb U$ is isomorphic to the positive part of $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$. In our first main result, we turn $\mathbb U$ into a $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$-module. Let $\bf U$ denote the $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$-submodule of $\mathbb U$ generated by the empty word. In our second main result, we show that the $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$-modules $\bf U$ and $V(Λ_0)$ are isomorphic. Let $\bf V$ denote the subspace of $\mathbb V$ spanned by the words that do not begin with $y$ or $xx$. In our third main result, we show that $\bf U = \mathbb U \cap {\bf V}$.

The dual approach to the $K(π, 1)$ conjecture
Published in Geometric Methods in Group Theory: Papers Dedicated to Ruth Charney, pp. 177-202, 2025 • Search Publication
Dual presentations of Coxeter groups have recently led to breakthroughs in our understanding of affine Artin groups. In particular, they led to the proof of the $K(π, 1)$ conjecture and to the solution of the word problem. Will the "dual approach" extend to more general classes of Coxeter and Artin groups? In this paper, we describe the techniques used to prove the $K(π, 1)$ conjecture for affine Artin groups and we ask a series of questions that are mostly open beyond the spherical and affine cases.

The existence of partitioned balanced tournament designs
Published • View Publication • BIB
E. R. Lamken prove in [5] that there exists a partitioned balanced tournament design of side $n$, PBTD($n$), for $n$ a positive integer, $n \ge 5$, except possibly for $n \in \{9,11,15\}$. In this article, we show the existence of PBTD($n$) for $n \in \{9,11,15\}$. As a consequence, the existence of PBTD($n$) has been completely determined.

Limiting Betti distributions of Hilbert schemes on $n$ points
Published • View Publication • BIB
Hausel and Rodriguez-Villegas recently observed that work of Göttsche, combined with a classical result of Erdős and Lehner on integer partitions, implies that the limiting Betti distribution for the Hilbert schemes $(\mathbb{C}^2)^{[n]}$ on $n$ points, as $n\rightarrow +\infty,$ is a \textit{Gumbel distribution}. In view of this example, they ask for further such Betti distributions. We answer this question for the quasihomogeneous Hilbert schemes $((\mathbb{C}^2)^{[n]})^{T_{α,β}}$ that are cut out by torus actions. We prove that their limiting distributions are also of Gumbel type. To obtain this result, we combine work of Buryak, Feigin, and Nakajima on these Hilbert schemes with our generalization of the result of Erdős and Lehner, which gives the distribution of the number of parts in partitions that are multiples of a fixed integer $A\geq 2.$ Furthermore, if $p_k(A;n)$ denotes the number of partitions of $n$ with exactly $k$ parts that are multiples of $A$, then we obtain the asymptotic $$ p_k(A,n)\sim \frac{24^{\frac k2-\frac14}(n-Ak)^{\frac k2-\frac34}}{\sqrt2\left(1-\frac1A\right)^{\frac k2-\frac14}k!A^{k+\frac12}(2π)^k}e^{2π\sqrt{\frac1{6}\left(1-\frac1A\right)(n-Ak)}}, $$ a result which is of independent interest.

Expected value of letters of permutations with a given number of $k$-cycles
In this paper, we study permutations $π\in S_n$ with exactly $m$ transpositions. In particular, we are interested in the expected value of $π(1)$ when such permutations are chosen uniformly at random. When $n$ is even, this expected value is approximated closely by $(n+1)/2$, with an error term that is related to the number isometries of the $(n/2-m)$-dimensional hypercube that move every face. Furthermore, when $k \mid n$, this construction generalizes to allow us to compute the expected value of $π(1)$ for permutations with exactly $m$ $k$-cycles. In this case, the expected value has an error term which is related instead to the number derangements of the generalized symmetric group $S(k,n/k-m)$. When $k$ does not divide $n$, the expected value of $π(1)$ is precisely $(n+1)/2$. Indirectly, this suggests the existence of a reversible algorithm to insert a letter into a permutation which preserves the number of $k$-cycles, which we construct.
The DP Color Function of Clique-Gluings of Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
DP-coloring (also called correspondence coloring) is a generalization of list coloring that has been widely studied in recent years after its introduction by Dvořák and Postle in 2015. As the analogue of the chromatic polynomial of a graph $G$, $P(G,m)$, the DP color function of $G$, denoted by $P_{DP}(G,m)$, counts the minimum number of DP-colorings over all possible $m$-fold covers. Formulas for chromatic polynomials of clique-gluings of graphs, a fundamental graph operation, are well-known, but the effect of such gluings on the DP color function is not well understood. In this paper we study the DP color function of $K_p$-gluings of graphs. Recently, Becker et. al. asked whether $P_{DP}(G,m) \leq (\prod_{i=1}^n P_{DP}(G_i,m))/\left( \prod_{i=0}^{p-1} (m-i) \right)^{n-1}$ whenever $m \geq p$, where the expression on the right is the DP-coloring analogue of the corresponding chromatic polynomial formula for a $K_p$-gluing, $G$, of $G_1, \ldots, G_n$. Becker et. al. showed this inequality holds when $p=1$. In this paper we show this inequality holds for edge-gluings ($p=2$). On the other hand, we show it does not hold for triangle-gluings ($p=3$), which also answers a question of Dong and Yang (2021). Finally, we show a relaxed version, based on a class of $m$-fold covers that we conjecture would yield the fewest DP-colorings for a given graph, of the inequality holds when $p \geq 3$.

On the 2-binomial complexity of the generalized Thue-Morse words
In this paper, we study the $2$-binomial complexity $b_{\mathbf{t}_{m},2}(n)$ of the generalized Thue-Morse words $\mathbf{t}_{m}$ for every integer $m\geq 3$. We obtain the exact value of $b_{\mathbf{t}_{m},2}(n)$ for every integer $n\geq m^{2}$. As a consequence, $b_{\mathbf{t}_{m},2}(n)$ is ultimately periodic with period $m^{2}$. This result partially answers a question of M. Lejeune, J. Leroy and M. Rigo [Computing the $k$-binomial complexity of the Thue-Morse word, J. Comb. Theory Ser. A, {\bf 176} (2020) 105284].

Union-closed Sets Conjecture Holds for Height No More Than 3 and Height No Less Than N-1
For each given union-closed family F of n elements and m sets, we discuss the union-closed sets conjecture from height number of the UC family, which is a natural parameter from lattice theory. In this paper, we call it height number of F(n, m), recorded as H(F). we prove that for any given union-closed family F, union-closed sets conjecture holds if its height number H(F) no more than 3 or no less than n-1. Since the height number H(F) is a positive integer which is bounded between 1 to n. As an attempted approach and framework, if we can prove union-closed sets conjecture holds for all possible value of H(F), then union-closed sets conjecture is true.

Maximum zeroth-order general Randić index of orientations of trees, unicyclic and bicyclic graphs with given matching number
The zeroth-order general Randić index $R^{0}_{a}$ of a digraph $D$ is the sum of $(d^{+}_{v})^{a}+(d^{-}_{w})^{a}$ over all arcs $vw$ of $D$, where $a$, $d^{+}_{v}$ and $d^{-}_{w}$ are an arbitrary real number, the out-degree of the vertex $v$ and the in-degree of the vertex $w$, respectively. We determine maximum zeroth-order general Randić index of oriented trees, unicyclic and bicyclic graphs in terms of matching number and order in this paper.
