On Strict (Outer-)Confluent Graphs
A strict confluent (SC) graph drawing is a drawing of a graph with vertices as points in the plane, where vertex adjacencies are represented not by individual curves but rather by unique smooth paths through a planar system of junctions and arcs. If all vertices of the graph lie in the outer face of the drawing, the drawing is called a strict outerconfluent (SOC) drawing. SC and SOC graphs were first considered by Eppstein et al. in Graph Drawing 2013. Here, we establish several new relationships between the class of SC graphs and other graph classes, in particular string graphs and unit-interval graphs. Further, we extend earlier results about special bipartite graph classes to the notion of strict outerconfluency, show that SOC graphs have cop number two, and establish that tree-like ($Δ$-)SOC graphs have bounded cliquewidth.

Sheaf homology of hyperplane arrangements, Boolean covers and exterior powers
Published in Math. Z. 302 (2022), 1451-1475 • View Publication • BIB
We compute the sheaf homology of the intersection lattice of a hyperplane arrangement with coefficients in the graded exterior sheaf of the natural sheaf. This builds on the results of our previous paper, where this homology was computed for the natural sheaf, itself a generalisation of an old result of Lusztig. The computational machinery we develop in this paper is quite different though: sheaf homology is lifted to what we call Boolean covers, where we instead compute homology cellularly. A number of tools are given for the cellular homology of these Boolean covers, including a deletion-restriction long exact sequence.

4-Connected Triangulations on Few Lines
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that 4-connected plane triangulations can be redrawn such that edges are represented by straight segments and the vertices are covered by a set of at most $\sqrt{2n}$ lines each of them horizontal or vertical. The same holds for all subgraphs of such triangulations. The proof is based on a corresponding result for diagrams of planar lattices which makes use of orthogonal chain and antichain families.

Order plus size of $τ$-critical graphs
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a $τ$-critical graph with $τ(G)=t$. Erdős and Gallai proved that $|V|\leq 2t$ and the bound $|E|\leq {t+1\choose 2}$ was obtained by Erdős, Hajnal and Moon. We give here the sharp combined bound $|E|+|V|\leq {t+2\choose 2}$ and find all graphs with equality.
Existence of non-Cayley Haar graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A Cayley graph of a group $H$ is a finite simple graph $Γ$ such that its automorphism group ${\rm Aut}(Γ)$ contains a subgroup isomorphic to $H$ acting regularly on $V(Γ)$, while a Haar graph of $H$ is a finite simple bipartite graph $Σ$ such that ${\rm Aut}(Σ)$ contains a subgroup isomorphic to $H$ acting semiregularly on $V(Σ)$ and the $H$-orbits are equal to the partite sets of $Σ$. It is well-known that every Haar graph of finite abelian groups is a Cayley graph. In this paper, we prove that every finite non-abelian group admits a non-Cayley Haar graph except the dihedral groups $D_6$, $D_8$, $D_{10}$, the quaternion group $Q_8$ and the group $Q_8\times\mathbb{Z}_2$. This answers an open problem proposed by Estélyi and Pisanski in 2016.

Bisector energy and pinned distances in positive characteristic
We prove a new lower bound for the number of pinned distances over finite fields: if $A$ is a sufficiently small subset of $\mathbb{F}_q^2$, then there is an element in $A$ that determines $\gg |A|^{2/3}$ distinct distances to other elements of $A$. Combined with results for large subsets $A\subseteq\mathbb{F}_q^2$, this improves all previously known lower bounds on distinct distances over finite fields. In fact, we obtain an upper bound for the number of isosceles triangles determined by $A$. For that we use the concept of bisector energy. It turns out that the latter can be expressed as a point-plane incidence bound, so one can use a theorem of the third author. The conversion to this incidence problem relies on the Blaschke-Grünwald kinematic mapping -- an embedding of the group of rigid motions of $\mathbb{F}_q^2$ into an open subset of the projective three space. This has long been known in kinematics and geometric algebra; we provide a proof for arbitrary fields using Clifford algebras.

Semigroup models for biochemical reaction networks
Published • View Publication • BIB
The catalytic reaction system (CRS) formalism by Hordijk and Steel is a versatile method to model autocatalytic biochemical reaction networks. It is particularly suited, and has been widely used, to study self-sustainment and self-generation properties. Its distinguishing feature is the explicit assignment of a catalytic function to chemicals that are part of the system. In this work, it is shown that the subsequent and simultaneous catalytic functions gives rise to an algebraic structure of a semigroup with the additional compatible operation of idempotent addition and a partial order. The aim of this article is to demonstrate that such semigroup models are a natural setup to describe and analyze self-sustaining CRS. The basic algebraic properties of the models are established and the notion of the function of any set of chemicals on the whole CRS is made precise. This leads to a natural discrete dynamics on the network, which results from iteratively considering the self-action on a set of chemicals by its own function. The fixed points of this dynamics are proven to correspond to self-sustaining sets of chemicals, which are functionally closed. Finally, as the main application, a theorem on the maximal self-sustaining set and a structure theorem on the lattice of functionally closed self-sustaining sets of chemicals are proven.

Maximum Rectilinear Crossing Number of Uniform Hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We improve the lower bound on the $d$-dimensional rectilinear crossing number of the complete $d$-uniform hypergraph having $2d$ vertices to $Ω\left(\dfrac{(4\sqrt{2}/3^{3/4})^d}{d}\right)$ from $Ω(2^d \sqrt{d})$. We also establish that the $3$-dimensional rectilinear crossing number of a complete $3$-uniform hypergraph having $n \geq 9$ vertices is at least $\dfrac{43}{42}\dbinom{n}{6}$. We prove that the maximum number of crossing pairs of hyperedges in a $4$-dimensional rectilinear drawing of the complete $4$-uniform hypergraph having $n$ vertices is $13\dbinom{n}{8}$. We also prove that among all $4$-dimensional rectilinear drawings of a complete $4$-uniform hypergraph having $n$ vertices, the number of crossing pairs of hyperedges is maximized if all its vertices are placed at the vertices of a $4$-dimensional neighborly polytope. Our result proves the conjecture by Anshu et al. [Anshu, Gangopadhyay, Shannigrahi, and Vusirikala, 2017] for $d=4$. We prove that the maximum $d$-dimensional rectilinear crossing number of a complete $d$-partite $d$-uniform balanced hypergraph is $(2^{d-1}-1){\dbinom{n}{2}}^d$. We then prove that finding the maximum $d$-dimensional rectilinear crossing number of an arbitrary $d$-uniform hypergraph is NP-hard. We give a randomized scheme to create a $d$-dimensional rectilinear drawing of a $d$-uniform hypergraph $H$ such that, in expectation the total number of crossing pairs of hyperedges is a constant fraction of the maximum $d$-dimensional rectilinear crossing number of $H$.
Finding and counting permutations via CSPs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Permutation patterns and pattern avoidance have been intensively studied in combinatorics and computer science, going back at least to the seminal work of Knuth on stack-sorting (1968). Perhaps the most natural algorithmic question in this area is deciding whether a given permutation of length $n$ contains a given pattern of length $k$. In this work we give two new algorithms for this well-studied problem, one whose running time is $n^{k/4 + o(k)}$, and a polynomial-space algorithm whose running time is the better of $O(1.6181^n)$ and $O(n^{k/2 + 1})$. These results improve the earlier best bounds of $n^{0.47k + o(k)}$ and $O(1.79^n)$ due to Ahal and Rabinovich (2000) resp. Bruner and Lackner (2012) and are the fastest algorithms for the problem when $k \in Ω(\log{n})$. We show that both our new algorithms and the previous exponential-time algorithms in the literature can be viewed through the unifying lens of constraint-satisfaction. Our algorithms can also count, within the same running time, the number of occurrences of a pattern. We show that this result is close to optimal: solving the counting problem in time $f(k) \cdot n^{o(k/\log{k})}$ would contradict the exponential-time hypothesis (ETH). For some special classes of patterns we obtain improved running times. We further prove that $3$-increasing and $3$-decreasing permutations can, in some sense, embed arbitrary permutations of almost linear length, which indicates that an algorithm with sub-exponential running time is unlikely, even for patterns from these restricted classes.

Two-row $W$-graphs in affine type $A$
Published • View Publication • BIB
For affine symmetric groups we construct finite $W$-graphs corresponding to two-row shapes, and prove their uniqueness. This gives the first non-trivial family of examples of finite $W$-graphs in an affine type. We compare our construction with quotients of periodic $W$-graphs defined by Lusztig. Under certain positivity assumption on the latter the two are shown to be isomorphic.

Superpermutation matrices
Superpermutations are words over a finite alphabet containing every permutation as a factor. Finding the minimal length of a superpermutation is still an open problem. In this article, we introduce superpermutations matrices. We establish a link between the minimal size of such a matrix and the minimal length of a universal word for the quotient of the symmetric group $S_n$ by an equivalence relation. We will then give non-trivial bounds on the minimal length of such a word and prove that the limit of their ratio when $n$ approaches infinity is 2.

On $k$-antichains in the unit $n$-cube
Published • View Publication • BIB
A \emph{chain} in the unit $n$-cube is a set $C\subset [0,1]^n$ such that for every $\mathbf{x}=(x_1,\ldots,x_n)$ and $\mathbf{y}=(y_1,\ldots,y_n)$ in $C$ we either have $x_i\le y_i$ for all $i\in [n]$, or $x_i\ge y_i$ for all $i\in [n]$. We consider subsets, $A$, of the unit $n$-cube $[0,1]^n$ that satisfy \[ \text{card}(A \cap C) \le k, \, \text{ for all chains } \, C \subset [0,1]^n \, , \] where $k$ is a fixed positive integer. We refer to such a set $A$ as a $k$-antichain. We show that the $(n-1)$-dimensional Hausdorff measure of a $k$-antichain in $[0,1]^n$ is at most $kn$ and that the bound is asymptotically sharp. Moreover, we conjecture that there exist $k$-antichains in $[0,1]^n$ whose $(n-1)$-dimensional Hausdorff measure equals $kn$ and we verify the validity of this conjecture when $n=2$.

Schedules and the Delta Conjecture
Published • View Publication • BIB
In a recent preprint, Carlsson and Oblomkov (2018) obtain a long sought after monomial basis for the ring $\operatorname{DR}_n$ of diagonal coinvariants. Their basis is closely related to the "schedules" formula for the Hilbert series of $\operatorname{DR}_n$ which was conjectured by the first author and Loehr (2005) and first proved by Carlsson and Mellit (2018), as a consequence of their proof of the famous Shuffle Conjecture. In this article we obtain a schedules formula for the combinatorial side of the Delta Conjecture, a conjecture introduced by the first author, Remmel and Wilson (2018) which contains the Shuffle Conjecture as a special case. Motivated by the Carlsson-Oblomkov basis for $\operatorname{DR}_n$ and our Delta schedules formula, we introduce a (conjectural) basis for the module $\operatorname{SDR}_n$ of super-diagonal coinvariants, an $S_n$ module generalizing $\operatorname{DR}_n$ introduced recently by Zabrocki (2019) which conjecturally corresponds to the Delta Conjecture.

Parabolic subgroups and Automorphism groups of Schubert varieties

Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group of adjoint type over the field $\mathbb{C}$ of complex numbers, $B$ be a Borel subgroup of $G$ containing a maximal torus $T$ of $G.$ Let $w$ be an element of the Weyl group $W$ and $X(w)$ be the Schubert variety in $G/B$ corresponding to $w$. In this article we show that given any parabolic subgroup $P$ of $G$ containing $B$ properly, there is an element $w\in W$ such that $P$ is the connected component, containing the identity element of the group of all algebraic automorphisms of $X(w).$

On Occupancy Moments and Bloom Filter Efficiency
Two multivariate committee distributions are shown to belong to Berg's family of factorial series distributions and Kemp's family of generalized hypergeometric factorial moment distributions. Exact moment formulas, upper and lower bounds, and statistical parameter estimators are provided for the classic occupancy and committee distributions. The derived moment equations are used to determine exact formulas for the false-positive rate and efficiency of Bloom filters -- probabilistic data structures used to solve the set membership problem. This study reveals that the conventional Bloom filter analysis overestimates the number of hash functions required to minimize the false-positive rate, and shows that Bloom filter efficiency is monotonic in the number of hash functions.

New Invariants for Permutations, Orders and Graphs
Published in Adv. Appl. Math. 121 (2020), 102080 • View Publication • BIB
We study the symmetric function and polynomial combinatorial invariants of Hopf algebras of permutations, posets and graphs. We investigate their properties and the relations among them. In particular, we show that the chromatic symmetric function and many other invariants have a property we call positively $h$-alternating. This property of positively $h$-alternating leads to Schur positivity and $e$-positivity when applying the operator $\nabla$ at $q=1$. We conclude by showing that the invariants we consider can be expressed as scheduling problems.

Rerooting multi-type branching trees: the infinite spine case
