Some $q$-congruences for homogeneous and quasi-homogeneous multiple $q$-harmonic sums
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show some new Wolstenholme type $q$-congruences for some classes of multiple $q$-harmonic sums of arbitrary depth with strings of indices composed of ones, twos and threes. Most of these results are $q$-extensions of the corresponding congruences for ordinary multiple harmonic sums obtained by the authors in a previous paper. Finally, we pose a conjecture concerning two kinds of cyclic sums of multiple $q$-harmonic sums.

Non-normal very ample polytopes - constructions and examples
Published in Experimental Mathematics 26 (2017), no. 2, 130-137 • View Publication • BIB
We present a method of constructing non-normal very ample polytopes as a segmental fibration of unimodular graph polytopes. In many cases we explicitly compute their invariants - Hilbert function, Ehrhart polynomial, gap vector. In particular, we answer several questions posed by Beck, Cox, Delgado, Gubeladze, Haase, Hibi, Higashitani and Maclagan.

Regular Interval Exchange Transformations over a Quadratic Field
We describe a generalization of a result of Boshernitzan and Carroll: an extension of Lagrange's Theorem on continued fraction expansion of quadratic irrationals to interval exchange transformations. In order to do this, we use a two-sided version of the Rauzy induction. In particular, we show that starting from an interval exchange transforma- tion whose lengths are defined over a quadratic field and applying the two-sided Rauzy induction, one can obtain only a finite number of new transformations up to homothety.
Derandomizing restricted isometries via the Legendre symbol
Published • View Publication • BIB
The restricted isometry property (RIP) is an important matrix condition in compressed sensing, but the best matrix constructions to date use randomness. This paper leverages pseudorandom properties of the Legendre symbol to reduce the number of random bits in an RIP matrix with Bernoulli entries. In this regard, the Legendre symbol is not special---our main result naturally generalizes to any small-bias sample space. We also conjecture that no random bits are necessary for our Legendre symbol--based construction.

Ascent sequences avoiding pairs of patterns
Published • View Publication • BIB
Ascent sequences were introduced by Bousquet-Melou et al. in connection with (2+2)-avoiding posets and their pattern avoidance properties were first considered by Duncan and Steingrimsson. In this paper, we consider ascent sequences of length $n$ avoiding two patterns of length 3, and we determine an exact enumeration for 16 different pairs of patterns. Methods include simple recurrences, bijections to other combinatorial objects (including Dyck paths and pattern-avoiding permutations), and generating trees. We also provide an analogue of the Erdos-Szekeres Theorem to prove that any sufficiently long ascent sequence contains either many copies of the same number or a long increasing subsequence, with a precise bound.
Godsil-McKay switching and isomorphism
Published • View Publication • BIB
Godsil-McKay switching is an operation on graphs that doesn't change the spectrum of the adjacency matrix. Usually (but not always) the obtained graph is non-isomorphic with the original graph. We present a straightforward sufficient condition for being isomorphic after switching, and give examples which show that this condition is not necessary. For some graph products we obtain sufficient conditions for being non-isomorphic after switching. As an example we find that the tensor product of the $\ell\times m$ grid ($\ell>m\geq 2$) and a graph with at least one vertex of degree two is not determined by its adjacency spectrum.
An extension of Tamari lattices
Published • View Publication • BIB
For any finite path $v$ on the square grid consisting of north and east unit steps, starting at (0,0), we construct a poset Tam$(v)$ that consists of all the paths weakly above $v$ with the same number of north and east steps as $v$. For particular choices of $v$, we recover the traditional Tamari lattice and the $m$-Tamari lattice. Let $\overleftarrow{v}$ be the path obtained from $v$ by reading the unit steps of $v$ in reverse order, replacing the east steps by north steps and vice versa. We show that the poset Tam$(v)$ is isomorphic to the dual of the poset Tam$(\overleftarrow{v})$. We do so by showing bijectively that the poset Tam$(v)$ is isomorphic to the poset based on rotation of full binary trees with the fixed canopy $v$, from which the duality follows easily. This also shows that Tam$(v)$ is a lattice for any path $v$. We also obtain as a corollary of this bijection that the usual Tamari lattice, based on Dyck paths of height $n$, is a partition of the (smaller) lattices Tam$(v)$, where the $v$ are all the paths on the square grid that consist of $n-1$ unit steps. We explain possible connections between the poset Tam$(v)$ and (the combinatorics of) the generalized diagonal coinvariant spaces of the symmetric group.

Anti-forcing numbers of perfect matchings of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We define the anti-forcing number of a perfect matching $M$ of a graph $G$ as the minimal number of edges of $G$ whose deletion results in a subgraph with a unique perfect matching $M$, denoted by $af(G,M)$. The anti-forcing number of a graph proposed by Vukičević and Trinajstić in Kekulé structures of molecular graphs is in fact the minimum anti-forcing number of perfect matchings. For plane bipartite graph $G$ with a perfect matching $M$, we obtain a minimax result: $af(G,M)$ equals the maximal number of $M$-alternating cycles of $G$ where any two either are disjoint or intersect only at edges in $M$. For a hexagonal system $H$, we show that the maximum anti-forcing number of $H$ equals the Fries number of $H$. As a consequence, we have that the Fries number of $H$ is between the Clar number of $H$ and twice. Further, some extremal graphs are discussed.

Abstract Separation Systems
Published • View Publication • BIB
Abstract separation systems provide a simple general framework in which both tree-shape and high cohesion of many combinatorial structures can be expressed, and their duality proved. Applications range from tangle-type duality and tree structure theorems in graphs, matroids or CW-complexes to, potentially, image segmentation and cluster analysis. This paper is intended as a concise common reference for the basic definitions and facts about abstract separation systems in these and any future papers using this framework.

Ramanujan-type Congruences for Overpartitions Modulo 5
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\overline{p}(n)$ denote the number of overpartitions of $n$. Hirschhorn and Sellers showed that $\overline{p}(4n+3)\equiv 0 \pmod{8}$ for $n\geq 0$. They also conjectured that $\overline{p}(40n+35)\equiv 0 \pmod{40}$ for $n\geq 0$. Chen and Xia proved this conjecture by using the $(p,k)$-parametrization of theta functions given by Alaca, Alaca and Williams. In this paper, we show that $\overline{p}(5n)\equiv (-1)^{n}\overline{p}(4\cdot 5n) \pmod{5}$ for $n \geq 0$ and $\overline{p}(n)\equiv (-1)^{n}\overline{p}(4n)\pmod{8}$ for $n \geq 0$ by using the relation of the generating function of $\overline{p}(5n)$ modulo $5$ found by Treneer and the $2$-adic expansion of the generating function of $\overline{p}(n)$ due to Mahlburg. As a consequence, we deduce that $\overline{p}(4^k(40n+35))\equiv 0 \pmod{40}$ for $n,k\geq 0$. Furthermore, applying the Hecke operator on $φ(q)^3$ and the fact that $φ(q)^3$ is a Hecke eigenform, we obtain an infinite family of congrences $\overline{p}(4^k \cdot5\ell^2n)\equiv 0 \pmod{5}$, where $k\ge 0$ and $\ell$ is a prime such that $\ell\equiv3 \pmod{5}$ and $\left(\frac{-n}{\ell}\right)=-1$. Moreover, we show that $\overline{p}(5^{2}n)\equiv \overline{p}(5^{4}n) \pmod{5}$ for $n \ge 0$. So we are led to the congruences $\overline{p}\big(4^k5^{2i+3}(5n\pm1)\big)\equiv 0 \pmod{5}$ for $n, k, i\ge 0$. In this way, we obtain various Ramanujan-type congruences for $\overline{p}(n)$ modulo $5$ such as $\overline{p}(45(3n+1))\equiv 0 \pmod{5}$ and $\overline{p}(125(5n\pm 1))\equiv 0 \pmod{5}$ for $n\geq 0$.
Hadwiger number of graphs with small chordality
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Hadwiger number of a graph G is the largest integer h such that G has the complete graph K_h as a minor. We show that the problem of determining the Hadwiger number of a graph is NP-hard on co-bipartite graphs, but can be solved in polynomial time on cographs and on bipartite permutation graphs. We also consider a natural generalization of this problem that asks for the largest integer h such that G has a minor with h vertices and diameter at most $s$. We show that this problem can be solved in polynomial time on AT-free graphs when s>=2, but is NP-hard on chordal graphs for every fixed s>=2.

Relative Length of Long Paths and Cycles in Graphs
For a graph $G$, $n$ denotes the order of $G$, $p$ the order of a longest path in $G$ and $c$ the order of a longest cycle. We show that if $G$ is a 2-connected graph such that $d(x)+d(y)+d(z)\ge p+2$ for all triples $x,y,z$ of independent vertices, then $c\ge p-1$. This improves results of Nash-Williams (in terms of minimum degree $δ$ and order $n$), Bondy (in terms of degree sum $σ_{3}$ and order $n$), and Enomoto, Heuvel, Kaneko and Saito (in terms of degree sum $σ_3$, order $n$ and relative length $diff(G)=p-c$).

Distinguishing Number for some Circulant Graphs
Introduced by Albertson et al. \cite{albertson}, the distinguishing number $D(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the least integer $r$ such that there is a $r$-labeling of the vertices of $G$ that is not preserved by any nontrivial automorphism of $G$. Most of graphs studied in literature have 2 as a distinguishing number value except complete, multipartite graphs or cartesian product of complete graphs depending on $n$. In this paper, we study circulant graphs of order $n$ where the adjacency is defined using a symmetric subset $A$ of $\mathbb{Z}_n$, called generator. We give a construction of a family of circulant graphs of order $n$ and we show that this class has distinct distinguishing numbers and these lasters are not depending on $n$.

The Minimum Bends in a Polyline Drawing with Fixed Vertex Locations
We consider embeddings of planar graphs in $R^2$ where vertices map to points and edges map to polylines. We refer to such an embedding as a polyline drawing, and ask how few bends are required to form such a drawing for an arbitrary planar graph. It has long been known that even when the vertex locations are completely fixed, a planar graph admits a polyline drawing where edges bend a total of $O(n^2)$ times. Our results show that this number of bends is optimal. In particular, we show that $Ω(n^2)$ total bends is required to form a polyline drawing on any set of fixed vertex locations for almost all planar graphs. This result generalizes all previously known lower bounds, which only applied to convex point sets, and settles 2 open problems.

Enumeration of MOLS of small order
Published in Mathematics of Computation 85, 2016, 799-824 • View Publication • BIB
We report the results of a computer investigation of sets of mutually orthogonal latin squares (MOLS) of small order. For $n\le9$ we 1. Determine the number of orthogonal mates for each species of latin square of order $n$. 2. Calculate the proportion of latin squares of order $n$ that have an orthogonal mate, and the expected number of mates when a square is chosen uniformly at random. 3. Classify all sets of MOLS of order $n$ up to various different notions of equivalence. We also provide a triple of latin squares of order 10 that is the closest to being a set of MOLS so far found.
Relaxed Locally Identifying coloring of Graphs
A \textit{locally identifying coloring} ($lid$-coloring) of a graph is a proper coloring such that the sets of colors appearing in the closed neighborhoods of any pair of adjacent vertices having distinct neighborhoods are distinct. Our goal is to study a \textit{relaxed locally identifying coloring} ($rlid$-coloring) of a graph that is similar to locally identifying coloring for which the coloring is not necessary proper. We denote by $χ_{rlid}(G)$ the minimum number of colors used in a relaxed locally identifying coloring of a graph $G$ In this paper, we prove that the problem of deciding that $χ_{rlid}(G)=3$ for a $2$-degenerate planar graph $G$ is $NP$-complete. We give several bounds of $χ_{rlid}(G)$ and construct graphs for which some of these bounds are tightened. Studying some families of graphs allows us to compare this parameter with the minimum number of colors used in a locally identifying coloring of a graph $G$ ($χ_{lid}(G)$), the size of a minimum identifying code of $G$ ($γ_{id}(G)$) and the chromatic number of $G$ ($χ(G)$).

A product formula for certain Littlewood-Richardson coefficients for Jack and Macdonald polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
Jack polynomials generalize several classical families of symmetric polynomials, including Schur polynomials, and are further generalized by Macdonald polynomials. In 1989, Richard Stanley conjectured that if the Littlewood-Richardson coefficient for a triple of Schur polynomials is 1, then the corresponding coefficient for Jack polynomials can be expressed as a product of weighted hooks of the Young diagrams associated to the partitions indexing the coefficient. We prove a special case of this conjecture in which the partitions indexing the Littlewood-Richardson coefficient have at most 3 parts. We also show that this result extends to Macdonald polynomials.
