New Behavior in Legal Decompositions Arising from Non-positive Linear Recurrences

Zeckendorf's theorem states every positive integer has a unique decomposition as a sum of non-adjacent Fibonacci numbers. This result has been generalized to many sequences $\{a_n\}$ arising from an integer positive linear recurrence, each of which has a corresponding notion of a legal decomposition. Previous work proved the number of summands in decompositions of $m \in [a_n, a_{n+1})$ becomes normally distributed as $n\to\infty$, and the individual gap measures associated to each $m$ converge to geometric random variables, when the leading coefficient in the recurrence is positive. We explore what happens when this assumption is removed in two special sequences. In one we regain all previous results, including unique decomposition; in the other the number of legal decompositions exponentially grows and the natural choice for the legal decomposition (the greedy algorithm) only works approximately 92.6\% of the time (though a slight modification always works). We find a connection between the two sequences, which explains why the distribution of the number of summands and gaps between summands behave the same in the two examples. In the course of our investigations we found a new perspective on dealing with roots of polynomials associated to the characteristic polynomials. This allows us to remove the need for the detailed technical analysis of their properties which greatly complicated the proofs of many earlier results in the subject, as well as handle new cases beyond the reach of existing techniques.

We exhibit a one-to-one correspondence between $3$-colored graphs and subarrangements of certain hyperplane arrangements denoted $\mathcal J_n$, $n \in \mathbb N$. We define the notion of centrality of $3$-colored graphs which corresponds to the centrality of hyperplane arrangements. Via the correspondence, the characteristic polynomial $χ_{\mathcal J_n}$ of $\mathcal J_n$ can be expressed in terms of the number of central $3$-colored graphs, and we compute $χ_{\mathcal J_n}$ for $n = 2, 3$.
Partial flag incidence algebras
The $n^{th}$ partial flag incidence algebra of a poset $P$ is the set of functions from $P^n$ to some ring which are zero on non-partial flag vectors. These partial flag incidence algebras for $n>2$ are not commutative, not unitary, and not associative. However, partial flag incidence algebras contain generalized zeta, delta, and Möbius functions which are finer and more delicate invariants than their classical analogues. We also study some generalized characteristic polynomials of posets which are not evaluations of Tutte polynomials and compute them for Boolean lattices. Motivation for this work came from studying the matroid Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials where partial flag Whitney numbers play a central role.
On some properties of three different types of triangular blocked tensors

We define three types of upper (and lower) triangular blocked tensors, which are all generalizations of the triangular blocked matrices. We study some basic properties and characterizations of these three types of triangular blocked tensors. We obtain the formulas for the determinants, characteristic polynomials and spectra of the first and second type triangular blocked tensors, and give an example to show that these formulas no longer hold for the third type triangular blocked tensors. We prove that the product of any two $(n_1,\cdots,n_r)$-upper (or lower) triangular blocked tensors of the first or second or third type is still an $(n_1,\cdots,n_r)$-upper (or lower) triangular blocked tensor of the same type. We also prove that, if an $(n_1,\cdots,n_r)$-upper triangular blocked tensor of the first or second or third type has a left $k$-inverse, then its unique left $k$-inverse is still an $(n_1,\cdots,n_r)$-upper triangular blocked tensor of the same type. Also if it has a right $k$-inverse, then all of its right $k$-inverses are still $(n_1,\cdots,n_r)$-upper triangular blocked tensors of the same type. By showing that the left $k$-inverse (if any) of a weakly irreducible nonsingular $M$-tensor is a positive tensor, we show that the left $k$-inverse (if any) of a first or second or third type canonical $(n_1,\cdots,n_r)$-upper triangular blocked nonsingular $M$-tensor is an $(n_1,\cdots,n_r)$-upper triangular blocked tensor of the same type all of whose diagonal blocks are positive tensors. We also show that every order $m$ dimension $n$ tensor is permutation similar to some third type normal upper triangular blocked tensor (all of whose diagonal blocks are irreducible). We give an example to show that this is not true for the first type canonical upper triangular blocked tensor.

We study a family of polynomials associated with ascent-descent statistics on labeled rooted plane k-ary trees introduced by Gessel, from a rook-theoretic perspective. We generalize the excedance statistic on permutations to maximal nonattacking rook placements on certain rectangular boards by decomposing them into boards of staircase shape. We then relate the number of maximal nonattacking rook placements on certain skew boards to the number of regions in extended Linial arrangements by establishing a relation between the factorial polynomial of those boards to the characteristic polynomial of extended Linial arrangements. Furthermore, we give a combinatorial interpretation of the number of bounded regions in extended Linial arrangements in the setting of labeled rooted plane k-ary trees. Finally, using the work of Goldman-Joichi-White, we identify graphs whose chromatic polynomials equal the characteristic polynomials of extended Linial arrangements upto a straightforward normalization.

The recent work by Marcus, Spielman and Srivastava proves the existence of bipartite Ramanujan (multi)graphs of all degrees and all sizes. However, that paper did not provide a polynomial time algorithm to actually compute such graphs. Here, we provide a polynomial time algorithm to compute certain expected characteristic polynomials related to this construction. This leads to a deterministic polynomial time algorithm to compute bipartite Ramanujan (multi)graphs of all degrees and all sizes.
The number of linear transformations defined on a subspace with given invariant factors

Given a finite-dimensional vector space $V$ over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ and a subspace $W$ of $V$, we consider the problem of counting linear transformations $T:W\to V$ which have prescribed invariant factors. The case $W=V$ is a well-studied problem that is essentially equivalent to counting the number of square matrices over $\mathbb{F}_q$ in a conjugacy class and an explicit formula is known in this case. On the other hand, the case of general $W$ is also an interesting problem and there hasn't been substantive progress in this case for over two decades, barring a special case where all the invariant factors of $T$ are of degree zero. We extend this result to the case of arbitrary $W$ by giving an explicit counting formula. As an application of our results, we give new proofs of some recent enumerative results in linear control theory and derive an extension of the Gerstenhaber-Reiner formula for the number of square matrices over $\mathbb{F}_q$ with given characteristic polynomial.
Restrictions of free arrangements and the division theorem

This is a survey and research note on the modified Orlik conjecture derived from the division theorem introduced in [2]. The division theorem is a generalization of classical addition-deletion theorems for free arrangements. The division theorem can be regarded as a modified converse of the Orlik's conjecture with a combinatorial condition, i.e., an arrangement is free if the restriction is free and the characteristic polynomial of the restriction divides that of an arrangement. In this article we recall, summarize, pose and re-formulate some of results and problems related to the division theorem based on [2], and study the modified Orlik's conjecture with partial answers.
On the interplay between embedded graphs and delta-matroids

The mutually enriching relationship between graphs and matroids has motivated discoveries in both fields. In this paper, we exploit the similar relationship between embedded graphs and delta-matroids. There are well-known connections between geometric duals of plane graphs and duals of matroids. We obtain analogous connections for various types of duality in the literature for graphs in surfaces of higher genus and delta-matroids. Using this interplay, we establish a rough structure theorem for delta-matroids that are twists of matroids, we translate Petrie duality on ribbon graphs to loop complementation on delta-matroids, and we prove that ribbon graph polynomials, such as the Penrose polynomial, the characteristic polynomial, and the transition polynomial, are in fact delta-matroidal. We also express the Penrose polynomial as a sum of characteristic polynomials.

The theory of intrinsic volumes of convex cones has recently found striking applications in areas such as convex optimization and compressive sensing. This article provides a self-contained account of the combinatorial theory of intrinsic volumes for polyhedral cones. Direct derivations of the General Steiner formula, the conic analogues of the Brianchon-Gram-Euler and the Gauss-Bonnet relations, and the Principal Kinematic Formula are given. In addition, a connection between the characteristic polynomial of a hyperplane arrangement and the intrinsic volumes of the regions of the arrangement, due to Klivans and Swartz, is generalized and some applications are presented.

Let $\mathcal{L}(T,λ)=\sum_{k=0}^n(-1)^{k}c_{k}(T)λ^{n-k}$ be the characteristic polynomial of its Laplacian matrix of a tree $T$. This paper studied some properties of the generating function of the coefficients sequence $(c_0, \cdots, c_n)$ which are related with the matching polynomials of division tree of $T$. These results, in turn, are used to characterize all extremal trees having the minimum Laplacian coefficient generation function and the minimum incidence energy of trees with described maximum degree, respectively.
A Perron theorem for matrices with negative entries and applications to Coxeter groups
Handelman (J. Operator Theory, 1981) proved that if the spectral radius of a matrix $A$ is a simple root of the characteristic polynomial and is strictly greater than the modulus of any other root, then $A$ is conjugate to a matrix $Z$ some power of which is positive. In this article, we provide an explicit conjugate matrix $Z$, and prove that the spectral radius of $A$ is a simple and dominant eigenvalue of $A$ if and only if $Z$ is eventually positive. For $n\times n$ real matrices with each row-sum equal to $1$, this criterion can be declined into checking that each entry of some power is strictly larger than the average of the entries of the same column minus $\frac{1}{n}$. We apply the criterion to elements of irreducible infinite nonaffine Coxeter groups to provide evidences for the dominance of the spectral radius, which is still unknown.

We prove the hard Lefschetz theorem and the Hodge-Riemann relations for a commutative ring associated to an arbitrary matroid M. We use the Hodge-Riemann relations to resolve a conjecture of Heron, Rota, and Welsh that postulates the log-concavity of the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of M. We furthermore conclude that the f-vector of the independence complex of a matroid forms a log-concave sequence, proving a conjecture of Mason and Welsh for general matroids.
Convex hulls of random walks, hyperplane arrangements, and Weyl chambers

We give an explicit formula for the probability that the convex hull of an $n$-step random walk in $R^d$ does not contain the origin, under the assumption that the distribution of increments of the walk is centrally symmetric and puts no mass on affine hyperplanes. This extends the formula by Sparre Andersen (1949) for the probability that such random walk in dimension one stays positive. Our result is distribution-free, that is, the probability does not depend on the distribution of increments.
This probabilistic problem is shown to be equivalent to either of the two geometric ones: 1) Find the number of Weyl chambers of type $B_n$ intersected by a generic linear subspace of $R^n$ of codimension $d$; 2) Find the conic intrinsic volumes of a Weyl chamber of type $B_n$. We solve the first geometric problem using the theory of hyperplane arrangements. A by-product of our method is a new simple proof of the general formula by Klivans and Swartz (2011) relating the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of a linear hyperplane arrangement to the conic intrinsic volumes of the chambers constituting its complement.
We obtain analogous distribution-free results for Weyl chambers of type $A_{n-1}$ (yielding the probability of absorption of the origin by the convex hull of a generic random walk bridge), type $D_n$, and direct products of Weyl chambers (yielding the absorption probability for the joint convex hull of several random walks or bridges). The simplest case of products of the form $B_1\times \dots \times B_1$ recovers the Wendel formula (1962) for the probability that the convex hull of an i.i.d. multidimensional sample chosen from a centrally symmetric distribution does not contain the origin.
We also give an asymptotic analysis of the obtained absorption probabilities as $n \to \infty$, in both cases of fixed and increasing dimension $d$.

Let $χ(A)$ denote the characteristic polynomial of a matrix $A$ over a field; a standard result of linear algebra states that $χ(A^{-1})$ is the reciprocal polynomial of $χ(A)$. More formally, the condition $χ^n(X) χ^k(X^{-1})=χ^{n-k}(X)$ holds for any invertible $n\times n$ matrix $X$ over a field, where $χ^i(X)$ denotes the coefficient of $λ^{n-i}$ in the characteristic polynomial $\det(λI-X)$. We confirm a recent conjecture of Niv by proving the tropical analogue of this result.

We show that for every subset $E$ of positive density in the set of integer square-matrices with zero traces, there exists an integer $k \geq 1$ such that the set of characteristic polynomials of matrices in $E-E$ contains the set of \emph{all} characteristic polynomials of integer matrices with zero traces and entries divisible by $k$. Our theorem is derived from results by Benoist-Quint on measure rigidity for actions on homogeneous spaces.
Complexity of Substitutive Sequences - Calculation of the Complexities of Substitutive Sequences Over a Binary Alphabet
We consider the complexities of substitutive sequences over a binary alphabet. By studying various types of special words, we show that, knowing some initial values, its complexity can be completely formulated via a recurrence formula determined by the characteristic polynomial.

We give a construction of a family of (weighted) graphs that are pairwise cospectral with respect to the normalized Laplacian matrix, or equivalently probability transition matrix. This construction can be used to form pairs of cospectral graphs with differing number of edges, including situations where one graph is a subgraph of the other. The method used to demonstrate cospectrality is by showing the characteristic polynomials are equal.
