A geometric approach for the upper bound theorem for Minkowski sums of convex polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We derive tight expressions for the maximum number of $k$-faces, $0\le{}k\le{}d-1$, of the Minkowski sum, $P_1+...+P_r$, of $r$ convex $d$-polytopes $P_1,...,P_r$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$, where $d\ge{}2$ and $r<d$, as a (recursively defined) function on the number of vertices of the polytopes. Our results coincide with those recently proved by Adiprasito and Sanyal [2]. In contrast to Adiprasito and Sanyal's approach, which uses tools from Combinatorial Commutative Algebra, our approach is purely geometric and uses basic notions such as $f$- and $h$-vector calculus and shellings, and generalizes the methodology used in [15] and [14] for proving upper bounds on the $f$-vector of the Minkowski sum of two and three convex polytopes, respectively. The key idea behind our approach is to express the Minkowski sum $P_1+...+P_r$ as a section of the Cayley polytope $\mathcal{C}$ of the summands; bounding the $k$-faces of $P_1+...+P_r$ reduces to bounding the subset of the $(k+r-1)$-faces of $\mathcal{C}$ that contain vertices from each of the $r$ polytopes. We end our paper with a sketch of an explicit construction that establishes the tightness of the upper bounds.
Dominating induced matchings of finite graphs and regularity of edge ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
The regularity of an edge ideal of a finite simple graph $G$ is at least the induced matching number of $G$ and is at most the minimum matching number of $G$. If $G$ possesses a dominating inuduced matching, i.e., an induced matching which forms a maximal matching, then the induced matching number of $G$ is equal to the minimum matching number of $G$. In the present paper, from viewpoints of both combinatorics and commutative algebra, finite simple graphs with dominating induced matchings will be mainly studied.

On commutative algebra associated to $t$-labeled subforests of a graph
For a given graph $G$, we construct an associated commutative algebra, whose dimension is equal to the number of $t$-labeled forests of $G$. We show that the dimension of the $k$-th graded component of this algebra also has a combinatorial meaning and that its Hilbert polynomial can be expressed through the Tutte polynomial of $G$.

Let Δbe a Cohen-Macaulay complex
The concept of Cohen-Macaulay complexes emerged in the mid-1970s and swiftly became the focal point of an attractive and richly connected new area of mathematics, at the crossroads of combinatoics, commutative algebra and topology. As the main architect of these developments, Richard Stanley has made fundamental contributions over many years. This paper contains some brief mathematical discussions related to the Cohen-Macaulay property, and some personal memories. The characterization of Gorenstein* and homotopy Gorenstein* complexes and the relevance in that connection of the Poincaré conjecture is discussed. Another topic is combinatorial aspects of a recent result on the homotopy Cohen-Macaulayness of certain subsets of geometric lattices, motivated by questions in tropical geometry.
Connectivity of pseudomanifold graphs from an algebraic point of view
Published • View PublicationBIB
The connectivity of graphs of simplicial and polytopal complexes is a classical subject going back at least to Steinitz, and the topic has since been studied by many authors, including Balinski, Barnette, Athanasiadis and Bjorner. In this note, we provide a unifying approach which allows us to obtain more general results. Moreover, we provide a relation to commutative algebra by relating connectivity problems to graded Betti numbers of the associated Stanley--Reisner rings.

Gröbner methods for representations of combinatorial categories
Published in J. Amer. Math. Soc. 30 (2017), 159-203 • View PublicationBIB
Given a category C of a combinatorial nature, we study the following fundamental question: how does the combinatorial behavior of C affect the algebraic behavior of representations of C? We prove two general results. The first gives a combinatorial criterion for representations of C to admit a theory of Gröbner bases. From this, we obtain a criterion for noetherianity of representations. The second gives a combinatorial criterion for a general "rationality" result for Hilbert series of representations of C. This criterion connects to the theory of formal languages, and makes essential use of results on the generating functions of languages, such as the transfer-matrix method and the Chomsky-Schützenberger theorem. Our work is motivated by recent work in the literature on representations of various specific categories. Our general criteria recover many of the results on these categories that had been proved by ad hoc means, and often yield cleaner proofs and stronger statements. For example: we give a new, more robust, proof that FI-modules (originally introduced by Church-Ellenberg-Farb), and a family of natural generalizations, are noetherian; we give an easy proof of a generalization of the Lannes-Schwartz artinian conjecture from the study of generic representation theory of finite fields; we significantly improve the theory of $Δ$-modules, introduced by Snowden in connection to syzygies of Segre embeddings; and we establish fundamental properties of twisted commutative algebras in positive characteristic.

Hecke algebras with independent parameters
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the Hecke algebra $\H(\bq)$ over an arbitrary field $\FF$ of a Coxeter system $(W,S)$ with independent parameters $\bq=(q_s\in\FF:s\in S)$ for all generators. This algebra is always linearly spanned by elements indexed by the Coxeter group $W$. This spanning set is indeed a basis if and only if every pair of generators joined by an odd edge in the Coxeter diagram receive the same parameter. In general, the dimension of $\H(\bq)$ could be as small as $1$. We construct a basis for $\H(\bq)$ when $(W,S)$ is simply laced. We also characterize when $\H(\bq)$ is commutative, which happens only if the Coxeter diagram of $(W,S)$ is simply laced and bipartite. In particular, for type A we obtain a tower of semisimple commutative algebras whose dimensions are the Fibonacci numbers. We show that the representation theory of these algebras has some features in analogy/connection with the representation theory of the symmetric groups and the 0-Hecke algebras.
Existence of unimodular triangulations - positive results
Published in Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. Volume 270, Number 1321, American Math. Society, 2021. ISBNs: 978-1-4704-4716-8 (print); 978-1-4704-6530-8 (online) • View PublicationBIB
Unimodular triangulations of lattice polytopes arise in algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, integer programming and, of course, combinatorics. In this article, we review several classes of polytopes that do have unimodular triangulations and constructions that preserve their existence. We include, in particular, the first effective proof of the classical result by Knudsen-Mumford-Waterman stating that every lattice polytope has a dilation that admits a unimodular triangulation. Our proof yields an explicit (although doubly exponential) bound for the dilation factor.

Clique Vectors of $k$-Connected Chordal Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The clique vector $\mathfrak{c}(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the sequence $(c_1, c_2, \ldots,c_d)$ in $\mathbb{N}^d$, where $c_i$ is the number of cliques in $G$ with $i$ vertices and $d$ is the largest cardinality of a clique in $G$. In this note, we use tools from commutative algebra to characterize all possible clique vectors of $k$-connected chordal graphs.

A New Approach to Enumerating Statistics Modulo $n$
We find a new approach to computing the remainder of a polynomial modulo $x^n-1$; such a computation is called modular enumeration. Given a polynomial with coefficients from a commutative $\mathbb{Q}$-algebra, our first main result constructs the remainder simply from the coefficients of residues of the polynomial modulo $Φ_d(x)$ for each $d\mid n$. Since such residues can often be found to have nice values, this simplifies a number of modular enumeration problems; indeed in some cases, such residues are already known while the related modular enumeration problem has remained unsolved. We list six such cases which our technique makes easy to solve. Our second main result is a formula for the unique polynomial $a$ such that $a \equiv f \mod Φ_n(x)$ and $a\equiv 0 \mod x^d-1$ for each proper divisor $d$ of $n$. We find a formula for remainders of $q$-multinomial coefficients and for remainders of $q$-Catalan numbers modulo $q^n-1$, reducing each problem to a finite number of cases for any fixed $n$. In the prior case, we solve an open problem posed by Hartke and Radcliffe. In considering $q$-Catalan numbers modulo $q^n-1$, we discover a cyclic group operation on certain lattice paths which behaves predictably with regard to major index. We also make progress on a problem in modular enumeration on subset sums posed by Kitchloo and Pachter.

Some relational structures with polynomial growth and their associated algebras I: Quasi-polynomiality of the profile
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 20(2) 2013 • View PublicationBIB
The profile of a relational structure $R$ is the function $\varphi_R$ which counts for every integer $n$ the number $\varphi_R(n)$, possibly infinite, of substructures of $R$ induced on the $n$-element subsets, isomorphic substructures being identified. If $\varphi_R$ takes only finite values, this is the Hilbert function of a graded algebra associated with $R$, the age algebra introduced by P. J. Cameron. In this paper we give a closer look at this association, particularly when the relational structure $R$ admits a finite monomorphic decomposition. This setting still encompass well-studied graded commutative algebras like invariant rings of finite permutation groups, or the rings of quasi-symmetric polynomials. We prove that $\varphi_R$ is eventually a quasi-polynomial, this supporting the conjecture that, under mild assumptions on $R$, $\varphi_R$ is eventually a quasi-polynomial when it is bounded by some polynomial.

Cluster Algebras of Grassmannians are Locally Acyclic
Published • View PublicationBIB
Considered as commutative algebras, cluster algebras can be very unpleasant objects. However, the first author introduced a condition known as "local acyclicity" which implies that cluster algebras behave reasonably. One of the earliest and most fundamental examples of a cluster algebra is the homogenous coordinate ring of the Grassmannian. We show that the Grassmannian is locally acyclic. Morally, we are in fact showing the stronger result that all positroid varieties are locally acyclic. However, it has not been shown that all positroid varieties have cluster structure, so what we actually prove is that certain cluster varieties associated to Postnikov's alternating strand diagrams are locally acylic. Moreover, we actually establish a slightly stronger property than local acyclicity, which we term the Louise property, that is designed to facilitate proofs involving the Mayer-Vietores sequence.

Algebraic matroids with graph symmetry
This paper studies the properties of two kinds of matroids: (a) algebraic matroids and (b) finite and infinite matroids whose ground set have some canonical symmetry, for example row and column symmetry and transposition symmetry. For (a) algebraic matroids, we expose cryptomorphisms making them accessible to techniques from commutative algebra. This allows us to introduce for each circuit in an algebraic matroid an invariant called circuit polynomial, generalizing the minimal poly- nomial in classical Galois theory, and studying the matroid structure with multivariate methods. For (b) matroids with symmetries we introduce combinatorial invariants capturing structural properties of the rank function and its limit behavior, and obtain proofs which are purely combinatorial and do not assume algebraicity of the matroid; these imply and generalize known results in some specific cases where the matroid is also algebraic. These results are motivated by, and readily applicable to framework rigidity, low-rank matrix completion and determinantal varieties, which lie in the intersection of (a) and (b) where additional results can be derived. We study the corresponding matroids and their associated invariants, and for selected cases, we characterize the matroidal structure and the circuit polynomials completely.
Deformations of shuffles and quasi-shuffles
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate deformations of the shuffl e Hopf algebra structure Sh(A) which can be de fined on the tensor algebra over a commutative algebra A. Such deformations, leading for example to the quasi-shuffl e algebra QSh(A), can be interpreted as natural transformations of the functor Sh, regarded as a functor from commutative nonunital algebras to coalgebras. We prove that the monoid of natural endomophisms of the functor Sh is isomorphic to the monoid of formal power series in one variable without constant term under composition, so that in particular, its natural automorphisms are in bijection with formal diffeomorphisms of the line. These transformations can be interpreted as elements of the Hopf algebra of word quasi-symmetric functions WQSym, and in turn de fine deformations of its structure. This leads to a new embedding of free quasi-symmetric functions into WQSym, whose relevance is illustrated by a simple and transparent proof of Goldberg's formula for the coe cients of the Hausdorff series.

Squarefree P-modules and the cd-index
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we introduce a new algebraic concept, which we call squarefree P-modules. This concept is inspired from Karu's proof of the non-negativity of the cd-indices of Gorenstein* posets, and supplies a way to study cd-indices from the viewpoint of commutative algebra. Indeed, by using the theory of squarefree P-modules, we give several new algebraic and combinatorial results on CW-posets. First, we define an analogue of the cd-index for any CW-poset and prove its non-negativity when a CW-poset is Cohen-Macaulay. This result proves that the h-vector of the barycentric subdivision of a Cohen-Macaulay regular CW-complex is unimodal. Second, we prove that the Stanley-Reisner ring of the barycentric subdivision of an odd dimensional Cohen-Macaulay polyhedral complex has the weak Lefschetz property. Third, we obtain sharp upper bounds of the cd-indices of Gorenstein* posets for a fixed rank generating function.
Factorization Properties of Leamer Monoids
Published in Semigroup Forum 89 (2014), no. 2, 409-421 • View PublicationBIB
The Huneke-Wiegand conjecture has prompted much recent research in Commutative Algebra. In studying this conjecture for certain classes of rings, García-Sánchez and Leamer construct a monoid S_Γ^s whose elements correspond to arithmetic sequences in a numerical monoid Γof step size s. These monoids, which we call Leamer monoids, possess a very interesting factorization theory that is significantly different from the numerical monoids from which they are derived. In this paper, we offer much of the foundational theory of Leamer monoids, including an analysis of their atomic structure, and investigate certain factorization invariants. Furthermore, when S_Γ^s is an arithmetical Leamer monoid, we give an exact description of its atoms and use this to provide explicit formulae for its Delta set and catenary degree.

Almost Commutative Probability Theory
We solve two longstanding major problems in Free Probability. This is achieved by generalising the theory to one with values in arbitrary commutative algebras. We prove the existence of the multi-variable $S$-transform, and show that it is naturally realised as a faithful linear representation. Further, we prove that in dimension one, the analog of the classical relation between addition and multiplication of independent random variables holds for free random variables, if the co-domain is an algebra over the rationals. In this case the multiplicative problem can be reduced to the additive one, which is not true in dimensions greater than one. Finally, we classify the groups which arise as joint distributions of $n$-tuples of non-commutative random variables, endowed with the free convolution product, which is the binary operation that encodes the multiplication of free $n$-tuples.
Algebraic study on Cameron-Walker graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a finite simple graph on $[n]$ and $I(G) \subset S$ the edge ideal of $G$, where $S = K[x_{1}, \ldots, x_{n}]$ is the polynomial ring over a field $K$. Let $m(G)$ denote the maximum size of matchings of $G$ and $im(G)$ that of induced matchings of $G$. It is known that $im(G) \leq \text{reg}(S/I(G)) \leq m(G)$, where $\text{reg}(S/I(G))$ is the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of $S/I(G)$. Cameron and Walker succeeded in classifying the finite connected simple graphs $G$ with $im(G) = m(G)$. We say that a finite connected simple graph $G$ is a Cameron-Walker graph if $im(G) = m(G)$ and if $G$ is neither a star nor a star triangle. In the present paper, we study Cameron-Walker graphs from a viewpoint of commutative algebra. First, we prove that a Cameron-Walker graph $G$ is unmixed if and only if $G$ is Cohen-Macaulay and classify all Cohen-Macaulay Cameron-Walker graphs. Second, we prove that there is no Gorenstein Cameron-Walker graph. Finally, we prove that every Cameron--Walker graph is sequentially Cohen-Macaulay.

On the theory of coconvex bodies
If the complement of a closed convex set in a closed convex cone is bounded, then this complement minus the apex of the cone is called a coconvex set. Coconvex sets appear in singularity theory (they are closely related to Newton diagrams) and in commutative algebra. Such invariants of coconvex sets as volumes, mixed volumes, number of integer points, etc., play an important role. This paper aims at extending various results from the theory of convex bodies to the coconvex setting. These include the Aleksandrov-Fenchel inequality and the Ehrhart duality.

Shellability of the higher pinched Veronese posets
Published • View PublicationBIB
The pinched Veronese poset $V^*_n$ is the poset with ground set consisting of all non-negative integer vectors of length n such that the sum of their coordinates is divisible by $n$ with exception of the vector $(1,...,1)$. For two vectors $a$ and $b$ in $V^*_n$ we have $a \leq b$ if and only if $b - a$ belongs to the ground set of $V^*_n$. We show that every interval in $V^*_n$ is shellable for $n$ at least 4. In order to obtain the result, we develop a new method for showing that a poset is shellable. This method differs from classical lexicographic shellability. Shellability of intervals in $V^*_n$ has consequences in commutative algebra. As a corollary we obtain a combinatorial proof of the fact that the pinched Veronese ring is Koszul for $n \geq 4$. (This also follows from a result by Conca, Herzog, Trung and Valla.)
