Complexity and algorithms for matching cut problems in graphs without long induced paths and cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
In a graph, a (perfect) matching cut is an edge cut that is a (perfect) matching. Matching Cut (MC), respectively, Perfect Matching Cut (PMC), is the problem of deciding whether a given graph has a matching cut, respectively, a perfect matching cut. The Disconnected Perfect Matching problem (DPM) is to decide if a graph has a perfect matching that contains a matching cut. Solving an open problem posed in [Lucke, Paulusma, Ries (ISAAC 2022, Algorithmica 2023)], we show that PMC is NP-complete in graphs without induced 14-vertex path $P_{14}$. Our reduction also works simultaneously for MC and DPM, improving the previous hardness results of MC on $P_{15}$-free graphs and of DPM on $P_{19}$-free graphs to $P_{14}$-free graphs for both problems. Actually, we prove a slightly stronger result: within $P_{14}$-free 8-chordal graphs (graphs without chordless cycles of length at least 9), it is hard to distinguish between those without matching cuts (respectively, perfect matching cuts, disconnected perfect matchings) and those in which every matching cut is a perfect matching cut. Moreover, assuming the Exponential Time Hypothesis, none of these problems can be solved in $2^{o(n)}$ time for $n$-vertex $P_{14}$-free 8-chordal graphs. On the positive side, we show that, as for MC [Moshi (JGT 1989)], DPM and PMC are polynomially solvable when restricted to 4-chordal graphs. Together with the negative results, this partly answers an open question on the complexity of PMC in $k$-chordal graphs asked in [Le, Telle (WG 2021, TCS 2022) & Lucke, Paulusma, Ries (MFCS 2023, TCS 2024)].
Computing Subset Vertex Covers in $H$-Free Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider a natural generalization of Vertex Cover: the Subset Vertex Cover problem, which is to decide for a graph $G=(V,E)$, a subset $T\subseteq V$ and integer $k$, if $V$ has a subset $S$ of size at most $k$, such that $S$ contains at least one end-vertex of every edge incident to a vertex of $T$. A graph is $H$-free if it does not contain $H$ as an induced subgraph. We solve two open problems from the literature by proving that Subset Vertex Cover is NP-complete on subcubic (claw,diamond)-free planar graphs and on $2$-unipolar graphs, a subclass of $2P_3$-free weakly chordal graphs. Our results show for the first time that Subset Vertex Cover is computationally harder than Vertex Cover (under P $\neq$ NP). We also prove new polynomial time results, some of which follow from a reduction to Vertex Cover restricted to classes of probe graphs. We first give a dichotomy on graphs where $G[T]$ is $H$-free. Namely, we show that Subset Vertex Cover is polynomial-time solvable on graphs $G$, for which $G[T]$ is $H$-free, if $H=sP_1+tP_2$ and NP-complete otherwise. Moreover, we prove that Subset Vertex Cover is polynomial-time solvable for $(sP_1+P_2+P_3)$-free graphs and bounded mim-width graphs. By combining our new results with known results we obtain a partial complexity classification for Subset Vertex Cover on $H$-free graphs.

The Redei--Berge symmetric function of a directed graph
Let $D=\left( V,A\right) $ be a digraph with $n$ vertices, where each arc $a\in A$ is a pair $\left( u,v\right) $ of two vertices. We study the \emph{Redei--Berge symmetric function} $U_{D}$, defined as the quasisymmetric function% \[ \sum L_{\operatorname*{Des}\left( w,D\right) ,\ n}\in\operatorname*{QSym}. \] Here, the sum ranges over all lists $w=\left( w_{1},w_{2},\ldots ,w_{n}\right) $ that contain each vertex of $D$ exactly once, and the corresponding addend is% \[ L_{\operatorname*{Des}\left( w,D\right) ,\ n}:=\sum_{\substack{i_{1}\leq i_{2}\leq\cdots\leq i_{n};\ı_{p}<i_{p+1}\text{ for each }p\text{ satisfying }\left( w_{p},w_{p+1}\right) \in A}}x_{i_{1}}x_{i_{2}}\cdots x_{i_{n}}% \] (an instance of Gessel's fundamental quasisymmetric functions). While $U_{D}$ is a specialization of Chow's path-cycle symmetric function, which has been studied before, we prove some new formulas that express $U_{D}$ in terms of the power-sum symmetric functions. We show that $U_{D}$ is always $p$-integral, and furthermore is $p$-positive whenever $D$ has no $2$-cycles. When $D$ is a tournament, $U_{D}$ can be written as a polynomial in $p_{1},2p_{3},2p_{5},2p_{7},\ldots$ with nonnegative integer coefficients. By specializing these results, we obtain the famous theorems of Redei and Berge on the number of Hamiltonian paths in digraphs and tournaments, as well as a modulo-$4$ refinement of Redei's theorem.

Extremal numbers and Sidorenko's conjecture
Published • View Publication • BIB
Sidorenko's conjecture states that, for all bipartite graphs $H$, quasirandom graphs contain asymptotically the minimum number of copies of $H$ taken over all graphs with the same order and edge density. While still open for graphs, the analogous statement is known to be false for hypergraphs. We show that there is some advantage in this, in that if Sidorenko's conjecture does not hold for a particular $r$-partite $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$, then it is possible to improve the standard lower bound, coming from the probabilistic deletion method, for its extremal number $\mathrm{ex}(n,H)$, the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $H$-free $r$-uniform hypergraph. With this application in mind, we find a range of new counterexamples to the conjecture for hypergraphs, including all linear hypergraphs containing a loose triangle and all $3$-partite $3$-uniform tight cycles.
On the Small Quasi-kernel conjecture
An independent vertex subset $S$ of the directed graph $G$ is a kernel if the set of out-neighbors of $S$ is $V(G)\setminus S$. An independent vertex subset $Q$ of $G$ is a quasi-kernel if the union of the first and second out-neighbors contains $V(G)\setminus S$ as a subset. Deciding whether a directed graph has a kernel is an NP-hard problem. In stark contrast, each directed graph has quasi-kernel(s) and one can be found in linear time. In this article, we will survey the results on quasi-kernel and their connection with kernels. We will focus on the small quasi-kernel conjecture which states that if the graph has no vertex of zero in-degree, then there exists a quasi-kernel of size not larger than half of the order of the graph. The paper also contains new proofs and some new results as well.

Spectral radius, fractional $[a,b]$-factor and ID-factor-critical graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a graph and $h: E(G)\rightarrow [0,1]$ be a function. For any two positive integers $a$ and $b$ with $a\leq b$, a fractional $[a,b]$-factor of $G$ with the indicator function $h$ is a spanning subgraph with vertex set $V(G)$ and edge set $E_h$ such that $a\leq\sum_{e\in E_{G}(v)}h(e)\leq b$ for any vertex $v\in V(G)$, where $E_h = \{e\in E(G)|h(e)>0\}$ and $E_{G}(v)=\{e\in E(G)| e~\mbox{is incident with}~v~\mbox{in}~G\}$. A graph $G$ is ID-factor-critical if for every independent set $I$ of $G$ whose size has the same parity as $|V(G)|$, $G-I$ has a perfect matching. In this paper, we present a tight sufficient condition based on the spectral radius for a graph to contain a fractional $[a,b]$-factor, which extends the result of Wei and Zhang [Discrete Math. 346 (2023) 113269]. Furthermore, we also prove a tight sufficient condition in terms of the spectral radius for a graph with minimum degree $δ$ to be ID-factor-critical.

Hypergraphs with arbitrarily small codegree Turán density
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $k\geq 3$. Given a $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$, the minimum codegree $δ(H)$ is the largest $d\in\mathbb{N}$ such that every $(k-1)$-set of $V(H)$ is contained in at least $d$ edges. Given a $k$-uniform hypergraph $F$, the codegree Turán density $γ(F)$ of $F$ is the smallest $γ\in [0,1]$ such that every $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices with $δ(H)\geq (γ+ o(1))n$ contains a copy of $F$. Similarly as other variants of the hypergraph Turán problem, determining the codegree Turán density of a hypergraph is in general notoriously difficult and only few results are known. In this work, we show that for every $\varepsilon>0$, there is a $k$-uniform hypergraph $F$ with $0<γ(F)<\varepsilon$. This is in contrast to the classical Turán density, which cannot take any value in the interval $(0,k!/k^k)$ due to a fundamental result by Erdős.

Polynomial removal lemma for ordered matchings
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that for every ordered matching $H$ on $t$ vertices, if an ordered $n$-vertex graph $G$ is $\varepsilon$-far from being $H$-free, then $G$ contains $\text{poly}(\varepsilon) n^t$ copies of $H$. This proves a special case of a conjecture of Tomon and the first author. We also generalize this statement to uniform hypergraphs.
Sparse Graphs of Twin-width 2 Have Bounded Tree-width
Twin-width is a structural width parameter introduced by Bonnet, Kim, Thomassé and Watrigant [FOCS 2020]. Very briefly, its essence is a gradual reduction (a contraction sequence) of the given graph down to a single vertex while maintaining limited difference of neighbourhoods of the vertices, and it can be seen as widely generalizing several other traditional structural parameters. Having such a sequence at hand allows to solve many otherwise hard problems efficiently. Our paper focuses on a comparison of twin-width to the more traditional tree-width on sparse graphs. Namely, we prove that if a graph $G$ of twin-width at most $2$ contains no $K_{t,t}$ subgraph for some integer $t$, then the tree-width of $G$ is bounded by a polynomial function of $t$. As a consequence, for any sparse graph class $\mathcal{C}$ we obtain a polynomial time algorithm which for any input graph $G \in \mathcal{C}$ either outputs a contraction sequence of width at most $c$ (where $c$ depends only on $\mathcal{C}$), or correctly outputs that $G$ has twin-width more than $2$. On the other hand, we present an easy example of a graph class of twin-width $3$ with unbounded tree-width, showing that our result cannot be extended to higher values of twin-width.

Induced subgraph density. II. Sparse and dense sets in cographs

A well-known theorem of Rödl says that for every graph $H$, and every $ε>0$, there exists $δ>0$ such that if $G$ does not contain an induced copy of $H$, then there exists $X\subseteq V(G)$ with $|X|\ge δ|G|$ such that one of $G[X],\overline{G}[X]$ has edge-density at most $ε$. But how does $δ$ depend on $ε$? Fox and Sudakov conjectured that the dependence is at most polynomial: that for all $H$ there exists $c>0$ such that for all $ε$ with $0<ε\le 1/2$, Rödl's theorem holds with $δ=ε^c$. This conjecture implies the Erdős-Hajnal conjecture, and until now it had not been verified for any non-trivial graphs $H$. Our first result shows that it is true when $H=P_4$. Indeed, in that case we can take $δ=ε$, and insist that one of $G[X],\overline{G}[X]$ has maximum degree at most $ε^2|G|$). Second, we will show that every graph $H$ that can be obtained by substitution from copies of $P_4$ satisfies the Fox-Sudakov conjecture. To prove this, we need to work with a stronger property. Let us say $H$ is {\em viral} if there exists $c>0$ such that for all $ε$ with $0<ε\le 1/2$, if $G$ contains at most $ε^c|G|^{|H|}$ copies of $H$ as induced subgraphs, then there exists $X\subseteq V(G)$ with $|X|\ge ε^c|G|$ such that one of $G[X],\overline{G}[X]$ has edge-density at most $ε$. We will show that $P_4$ is viral, using a ``polynomial $P_4$-removal lemma'' of Alon and Fox. We will also show that the class of viral graphs is closed under vertex-substitution. Finally, we give a different strengthening of Rödl's theorem: we show that if $G$ does not contain an induced copy of $P_4$, then its vertices can be partitioned into at most $480ε^{-4}$ subsets $X$ such that one of $G[X],\overline{G}[X]$ has maximum degree at most $ε|X|$.
Hamilton transversals in tournaments
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is well-known that every tournament contains a Hamilton path, and every strongly connected tournament contains a Hamilton cycle. This paper establishes transversal generalizations of these classical results. For a collection $\mathbf{T}=\{T_1,\dots,T_m\}$ of not-necessarily distinct tournaments on a common vertex set $V$, an $m$-edge directed graph $\mathcal{D}$ with vertices in $V$ is called a $\mathbf{T}$-transversal if there exists a bijection $φ\colon E(\mathcal{D})\to [m]$ such that $e\in E(T_{φ(e)})$ for all $e\in E(\mathcal{D})$. We prove that for sufficiently large $m$ with $m=|V|-1$, there exists a $\mathbf{T}$-transversal Hamilton path. Moreover, if $m=|V|$ and at least $m-1$ of the tournaments $T_1,\ldots,T_m$ are assumed to be strongly connected, then there is a $\mathbf{T}$-transversal Hamilton cycle. In our proof, we utilize a novel way of partitioning tournaments which we dub $\mathbf{H}$-partition.
Finding dense minors using average degree
Published in Journal of Graph Theory, 108(1):205-223, January 2025 • View Publication • BIB
Motivated by Hadwiger's conjecture, we study the problem of finding the densest possible $t$-vertex minor in graphs of average degree at least $t-1$. We show that if $G$ has average degree at least $t-1$, it contains a minor on $t$ vertices with at least $(\sqrt{2}-1-o(1))\binom{t}{2}$ edges. We show that this cannot be improved beyond $\left(\frac{3}{4}+o(1)\right)\binom{t}{2}$. Finally, for $t\leq 6$ we exactly determine the number of edges we are guaranteed to find in the densest $t$-vertex minor in graphs of average degree at least $t-1$.

Edge-coloring a graph $G$ so that every copy of a graph $H$ has an odd color class
Recently, Alon introduced the notion of an $H$-code for a graph $H$: a collection of graphs on vertex set $[n]$ is an $H$-code if it contains no two members whose symmetric difference is isomorphic to $H$. Let $D_{H}(n)$ denote the maximum possible cardinality of an $H$-code, and let $d_{H}(n)=D_{H}(n)/2^{n \choose 2}$. Alon observed that a lower bound on $d_{H}(n)$ can be obtained by attaining an upper bound on the number of colors needed to edge-color $K_n$ so that every copy of $H$ has an odd color class. Motivated by this observation, we define $g(G,H)$ to be the minimum number of colors needed to edge-color a graph $G$ so that every copy of $H$ has an odd color class. We prove $g(K_n,K_5) \le n^{o(1)}$ and $g(K_{n,n}, C_4)= n/2+o(n)$. The first result shows $d_{K_5}(n) \ge \frac{1}{n^{o(1)}}$ and was obtained independently in arXiv:2306.14682.

On Restricted Intersections and the Sunflower Problem
Published • View Publication • BIB
A sunflower with $r$ petals is a collection of $r$ sets over a ground set $X$ such that every element in $X$ is in no set, every set, or exactly one set. Erdős and Rado \cite{er} showed that a family of sets of size $n$ contains a sunflower if there are more than $n!(r-1)^n$ sets in the family. Alweiss et al. \cite{alwz} and subsequently Rao~\cite{rao} and Bell et al.~\cite{bcw} improved this bound to $(O(r \log(n))^n$. We study the case where the pairwise intersections of the set family are restricted. In particular, we improve the best-known bound for set families when the size of the pairwise intersections of any two sets is in a set $L$. We also present a new bound for the special case when the set $L$ is the nonnegative integers less than or equal to $d$ using the techniques of Alweiss et al. \cite{alwz}.

Spanning trees in the square of pseudorandom graphs
We show that for every $Δ\in\mathbb N$, there exists a constant $C$ such that if $G$ is an $(n,d,λ)$-graph with $d/λ\ge C$ and $d$ is large enough, then $G^2$ contains every $n$-vertex tree with maximum degree bounded by $Δ$. This answers a question of Krivelevich.

Complete bipartite graphs without small rainbow stars
Published • View Publication • BIB
The $k$-edge-colored bipartite Gallai-Ramsey number $\operatorname{bgr}_k(G:H)$ is defined as the minimum integer $n$ such that $n^2\geq k$ and for every $N\geq n$, every edge-coloring (using all $k$ colors) of complete bipartite graph $K_{N,N}$ contains a rainbow copy of $G$ or a monochromatic copy of $H$. In this paper, we first study the structural theorem on the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$ with no rainbow copy of $K_{1,3}$. Next, we utilize the results to prove the exact values of $\operatorname{bgr}_{k}(P_4: H)$, $\operatorname{bgr}_{k}(P_5: H)$, $\operatorname{bgr}_{k}(K_{1,3}: H)$, where $H$ is a various union of cycles and paths and stars.

The maximum number of odd cycles in a planar graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
How many copies of a fixed odd cycle, $C_{2m+1}$, can a planar graph contain? We answer this question asymptotically for $m\in\{2,3,4\}$ and prove a bound which is tight up to a factor of $3/2$ for all other values of $m$. This extends the prior results of Cox--Martin and Lv et al. on the analogous question for even cycles. Our bounds result from a reduction to the following maximum likelihood question: which probability mass $μ$ on the edges of some clique maximizes the probability that $m$ edges sampled independently from $μ$ form either a cycle or a path?

Asymptotic analysis of the characteristic polynomial for the Elliptic Ginibre Ensemble
We consider the complex Elliptic Ginibre Ensemble, a family of random matrix models introduced by Girko that interpolates between the Ginibre Ensemble and the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble and such that its empirical spectral measure converges to the uniform measure on an ellipse. We show the convergence in law of its normalised characteristic polynomial outside of this ellipse. Our proof contains two main steps. We first show the tightness of the normalised characteristic polynomial using the link between the Elliptic Ginibre Ensemble and Hermite polynomials. This part relies on the uniform control of the Hermite kernel which is derived from the recent work of Akemann, Duits and Molag. In the second step, we identify the limiting object as the exponential of a Gaussian analytic function. The limit expression is derived from the convergence of traces of Chebyshev polynomials of random matrices by the method of moments. These traces of Chebyshev polynomials appear naturally as a kind of centered version, or normal ordering, of the traces of the monomials. This work answers the interpolation problem raised in the work of Bordenave, Chafa{ï} and the second author of this paper for the integrable case of the Elliptic Ginibre Ensemble and is therefore a fist step towards the conjectured universality of this result.

Uniform density in matroids, matrices and graphs
We give new characterizations for the class of uniformly dense matroids and study applications of these characterizations to graphic and real representable matroids. We show that a matroid is uniformly dense if and only if its base polytope contains a point with constant coordinates. As a main application, we derive new spectral, structural and classification results for uniformly dense graphs. In particular, we show that connected regular uniformly dense graphs are $1$-tough and thus contain a (near-)perfect matching. As a second application, we show that strictly uniformly dense real represented matroids can be represented by projection matrices with a constant diagonal and that they are parametrized by a subvariety of the Grassmannian.

Rationality of Four-Valued Families of Weil Sums of Binomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the rationality of Weil sums of binomials of the form $W^{K,s}_u=\sum_{x \in K} ψ(x^s - u x)$, where $K$ is a finite field whose canonical additive character is $ψ$, and where $u$ is an element of $K^{\times}$ and $s$ is a positive integer relatively prime to $|K^\times|$, so that $x \mapsto x^s$ is a permutation of $K$. The Weil spectrum for $K$ and $s$, which is the family of values $W^{K,s}_u$ as $u$ runs through $K^\times$, is of interest in arithmetic geometry and in several information-theoretic applications. The Weil spectrum always contains at least three distinct values if $s$ is nondegenerate (i.e., if $s$ is not a power of $p$ modulo $|K^\times|$, where $p$ is the characteristic of $K$). It is already known that if the Weil spectrum contains precisely three distinct values, then they must all be rational integers. We show that if the Weil spectrum contains precisely four distinct values, then they must all be rational integers, with the sole exception of the case where $|K|=5$ and $s \equiv 3 \pmod{4}$.
