Disjoint cycles covering specified vertices in bipartite graphs with partial degrees
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $k$ be a positive integer. Let $G$ be a balanced bipartite graph of order $2n$ with bipartition $(X, Y)$, and $S$ a subset of $X$. Suppose that every pair of nonadjacent vertices $(x,y)$ with $x\in S, y\in Y$ satisfies $d(x)+d(y)\geq n+1$. We show that if $|S|\geq 2k+2$, then $G$ contains $k$ disjoint cycles covering $S$ such that each of the $k$ cycles contains at least two vertices of $S$. Here, both the degree condition and the lower bound of $|S|$ are best possible. And we also show that if $|S|=2k+1$, then $G$ contains $k$ disjoint cycles such that each of the $k$ cycles contains at least two vertices of $S$.

A note on the largest sum-free sets of integers
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given $A$ a set of $N$ positive integers, an old question in additive combinatorics asks that whether $A$ contains a sum-free subset of size at least $N/3+ω(N)$ for some increasing unbounded function $ω$. The question is generally attacked in the literature by considering another conjecture, which asserts that as $N\to\infty$, $\max_{x\in\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}}\sum_{n\in A}({\bf 1}_{(1/3,2/3)}-1/3)(nx)\to\infty$. This conjecture, if true, would also imply that a similar phenomenon occurs for $(2k,4k)$-sum-free sets for every $k\geq1$. In this note, we prove the latter result directly. The new ingredient of our proof is a structural analysis on the host set $A$, which might be of independent interest.

Further Results on Pure Summing Registers and Complementary Ones
We decide completely the cycle structure of pure summing register (PSR) and complementary summing register (CSR). Based on the state diagram of CSR, we derive an algorithm to generate de Bruijn cycles from CSR inspired by Tuvi Etzion's publication in 1984. We then point out the limitation in generalizations of extended representation we use in the algorithm proposed, with a proof of the fact that only PSR and CSR contain pure cycles all dividing n+1.

Lower bound on the size of a quasirandom forcing set of permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
A set $S$ of permutations is forcing if for any sequence $\{Π_i\}_{i \in \mathbb{N}}$ of permutations where the density $d(π,Π_i)$ converges to $\frac{1}{|π|!}$ for every permutation $π\in S$, it holds that $\{Π_i\}_{i \in \mathbb{N}}$ is quasirandom. Graham asked whether there exists an integer $k$ such that the set of all permutations of order $k$ is forcing; this has been shown to be true for any $k\ge 4$. In particular, the set of all twenty-four permutations of order $4$ is forcing. We provide the first non-trivial lower bound on the size of a forcing set of permutations: every forcing set of permutations (with arbitrary orders) contains at least four permutations.

Minimal partitions with a given $s$-core and $t$-core
Published • View Publication • BIB
Suppose $s$ and $t$ are coprime positive integers, and let $σ$ be an $s$-core partition and $τ$ a $t$-core partition. In this paper we consider the set $\mathcal P_{σ,τ}(n)$ of partitions of $n$ with $s$-core $σ$ and $t$-core $τ$. We find the smallest $n$ for which this set is non-empty, and show that for this value of $n$ the partitions in $\mathcal P_{σ,τ}(n)$ (which we call $(σ,τ)$-minimal partitions) are in bijection with a certain class of $(0,1)$-matrices with $s$ rows and $t$ columns. We then use these results in considering conjugate partitions: we determine exactly when the set $\mathcal P_{σ,τ}(n)$ consists of a conjugate pair of partitions, and when $\mathcal P_{σ,τ}(n)$ contains a unique self-conjugate partition.

Simplicial homeomorphs and trace-bounded hypergraphs
Published in Discrete Analysis 2022 • View Publication • BIB
Our first main result is a uniform bound, in every dimension $k \in \mathbb N$, on the topological Turán numbers of $k$-dimensional simplicial complexes: for each $k \in \mathbb N$, there is a $λ_k \ge k^{-2k^2}$ such that for any $k$-complex $\mathcal{S}$, every $k$-complex on $n \ge n_0(\mathcal{S})$ vertices with at least $n^{k+1 - λ_k}$ facets contains a homeomorphic copy of $\mathcal{S}$. This was previously known only in dimensions one and two, both by highly dimension-specific arguments: the existence of $λ_1$ is a result of Mader from 1967, and the existence of $λ_2$ was suggested by Linial in 2006 and recently proved by Keevash-Long-Narayanan-Scott. We deduce this geometric fact from a purely combinatorial result about trace-bounded hypergraphs, where an $r$-partite $r$-graph $H$ with partite classes $V_1, V_2, \dots, V_r$ is said to be $d$-trace-bounded if for each $2 \le i \le r$, all the vertices of $V_i$ have degree at most $d$ in the trace of $H$ on $V_1 \cup V_2 \cup \dots \cup V_i$. Our second main result is the following estimate for the Turán numbers of degenerate trace-bounded hypergraphs: for all $r \ge 2$ and $d\in\mathbb N$, there is an $α_{r,d} \ge (5rd)^{1-r}$ such that for any $d$-trace-bounded $r$-partite $r$-graph $H$, every $r$-graph on $n \ge n_0(H)$ vertices with at least $n^{r - α_{r,d}}$ edges contains a copy of $H$. This strengthens a result of Conlon-Fox-Sudakov from 2009 who showed that such a bound holds for $r$-partite $r$-graphs $H$ satisfying the stronger hypothesis that the vertex-degrees in all but one of its partite classes are bounded (in $H$, as opposed to in its traces).
Triangles in randomly perturbed graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the problem of finding pairwise vertex-disjoint triangles in the randomly perturbed graph model, which is the union of any $n$-vertex graph $G$ satisfying a given minimum degree condition and the binomial random graph $G(n,p)$. We prove that asymptotically almost surely $G \cup G(n,p)$ contains at least $\min\{δ(G), \lfloor n/3 \rfloor\}$ pairwise vertex-disjoint triangles, provided $p \ge C \log n/n$, where $C$ is a large enough constant. This is a perturbed version of an old result of Dirac. Our result is asymptotically optimal and answers a question of Han, Morris, and Treglown [RSA, 2021, no. 3, 480--516] in a strong form. We also prove a stability version of our result, which in the case of pairwise vertex-disjoint triangles extends a result of Han, Morris, and Treglown [RSA, 2021, no. 3, 480--516]. Together with a result of Balogh, Treglown, and Wagner [CPC, 2019, no. 2, 159--176] this fully resolves the existence of triangle factors in randomly perturbed graphs. We believe that the methods introduced in this paper are useful for a variety of related problems: we discuss possible generalisations to clique factors, cycle factors, and $2$-universality.

A new vertex coloring heuristic and corresponding chromatic number
Published in Algorithmica 82, 295--2414 (2020) • View Publication • BIB
One method to obtain a proper vertex coloring of graphs using a reasonable number of colors is to start from any arbitrary proper coloring and then repeat some local re-coloring techniques to reduce the number of color classes. The Grundy (First-Fit) coloring and color-dominating colorings of graphs are two well-known such techniques. The color-dominating colorings are also known and commonly referred as {\rm b}-colorings. But these two topics have been studied separately in graph theory. We introduce a new coloring procedure which combines the strategies of these two techniques and satisfies an additional property. We first prove that the vertices of every graph $G$ can be effectively colored using color classes say $C_1, \ldots, C_k$ such that $(i)$ for any two colors $i$ and $j$ with $1\leq i< j \leq k$, any vertex of color $j$ is adjacent to a vertex of color $i$, $(ii)$ there exists a set $\{u_1, \ldots, u_k\}$ of vertices of $G$ such that $u_j\in C_j$ for any $j\in \{1, \ldots, k\}$ and $u_k$ is adjacent to $u_j$ for each $1\leq j \leq k$ with $j\not= k$, and $(iii)$ for each $i$ and $j$ with $i\not= j$, the vertex $u_j$ has a neighbor in $C_i$. This provides a new vertex coloring heuristic which improves both Grundy and color-dominating colorings. Denote by $z(G)$ the maximum number of colors used in any proper vertex coloring satisfying the above properties. The $z(G)$ quantifies the worst-case behavior of the heuristic. We prove the existence of $\{G_n\}_{n\geq 1}$ such that $\min \{Γ(G_n), b(G_n)\} \rightarrow \infty$ but $z(G_n)\leq 3$ for each $n$. For each positive integer $t$ we construct a family of finitely many colored graphs ${\mathcal{D}}_t$ satisfying the property that if $z(G)\geq t$ for a graph $G$ then $G$ contains an element from ${\mathcal{D}}_t$ as a colored subgraph. This provides an algorithmic method for proving numeric upper bounds for $z(G)$.

A type of algebraic structure related to sets of intervals
Published • View Publication • BIB
F. Wehrung has asked: Given a family $\mathcal{C}$ of subsets of a set $Ω$, under what conditions will there exist a total ordering on $Ω$ under which every member of $\mathcal{C}$ is convex? <p> Note that if $A$ and $B$ are nondisjoint convex subsets of a totally ordered set, neither of which contains the other, then $A\cup B$, $A\cap B$, and $A\setminus B$ are also convex. So let $\mathcal{C}$ be an arbitrary set of subsets of a set $Ω$, and form its closure $\mathcal{P}$ under forming, whenever $A$ and $B$ are nondisjoint and neither contains the other, the sets $A\cup B$, $A\cap B$, and $A\setminus B$. We determine the form $\mathcal{P}$ can take when $\mathcal{C}$, and hence $\mathcal{P}$, is finite, and for this case get necessary and sufficient conditions for there to exist an ordering of $Ω$ of the desired sort. From this we obtain a condition which works without the finiteness hypothesis. <p> We establish bounds on the cardinality of the subset $\mathcal{P}$ generated as above by an $n$-element set $\mathcal{C}$. <p> We note connections with the theory of <i>interval graphs</i> and <i>hypergraphs</i>, which lead to other ways of answering Wehrung's question.

Connectivity keeping paths in $k$-connected bipartite graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 2010, Mader [W. Mader, Connectivity keeping paths in $k$-connected graphs, J. Graph Theory 65 (2010) 61-69.] proved that every $k$-connected graph $G$ with minimum degree at least $\lfloor\frac{3k}{2}\rfloor+m-1$ contains a path $P$ of order $m$ such that $G-V(P)$ is still $k$-connected. In this paper, we consider similar problem for bipartite graphs, and prove that every $k$-connected bipartite graph $G$ with minimum degree at least $k+m$ contains a path $P$ of order $m$ such that $G-V(P)$ is still $k$-connected.
A note on colour-bias Hamilton cycles in dense graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Balogh, Csaba, Jing and Pluhár recently determined the minimum degree threshold that ensures a $2$-coloured graph $G$ contains a Hamilton cycle of significant colour bias (i.e., a Hamilton cycle that contains significantly more than half of its edges in one colour). In this short note we extend this result, determining the corresponding threshold for $r$-colourings.

The complexity of the Perfect Matching-Cut problem
Published • View Publication • BIB
Perfect Matching-Cut is the problem of deciding whether a graph has a perfect matching that contains an edge-cut. We show that this problem is NP-complete for planar graphs with maximum degree four, for planar graphs with girth five, for bipartite five-regular graphs, for graphs of diameter three and for bipartite graphs of diameter four. We show that there exist polynomial time algorithms for the following classes of graphs: claw-free, $P_5$-free, diameter two, bipartite with diameter three and graphs with bounded tree-width.
Conditional probabilities via line arrangements and point configurations
Published in Linear and Multilinear Algebra, 2021 • View Publication • BIB
We study the connection between probability distributions satisfying certain conditional independence (CI) constraints, and point and line arrangements in incidence geometry. To a family of CI statements, we associate a polynomial ideal whose algebraic invariants are encoded in a hypergraph. The primary decompositions of these ideals give a characterisation of the distributions satisfying the original CI statements. Classically, these ideals are generated by 2-minors of a matrix of variables, however, in the presence of hidden variables, they contain higher degree minors. This leads to the study of the structure of determinantal hypergraph ideals whose decompositions can be understood in terms of point and line configurations in the projective space.

Vertex-Pancyclism in the Generalized Sum of Digraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A digraph $D=(V(D)$, $A(D))$ of order $n\geq 3$ is pancyclic, whenever $D$ contains a directed cycle of length $k$ for each $k\in \{3,\ldots,n\}$; and $D$ is vertex-pancyclic iff, for each vertex $v\in V(D)$ and each $k\in \{3,\ldots,n\}$, $D$ contains a directed cycle of length $k$ passing through $v$. Let $D_1, D_2, \ldots, D_k$ be a collection of pairwise vertex disjoint digraphs. The generalized sum (g.s.) of $D_1, D_2, \ldots, D_k$, denoted by $\oplus_{i=1}^k D_i$ or $D_1\oplus D_2 \oplus \cdots \oplus D_k$, is the set of all digraphs $D$ satisfying: (i) $V(D)=\bigcup_{i=1}^k V(D_i)$, (ii) $D\langle V(D_i) \rangle \cong D_i$ for $i=1,2,\ldots, k$, and (iii) for each pair of vertices belonging to different summands of $D$, there is exactly one arc between them, with an arbitrary but fixed direction. A digraph $D$ in $\oplus_{i=1}^k D_i$ will be called a generalized sum (g.s.) of $D_1, D_2, \ldots, D_k$. Let $D_1, D_2, \ldots, D_k$ be a collection of $k$ pairwise vertex disjoint Hamiltonian digraphs, in this paper we give simple sufficient conditions for a digraph $D\in \oplus_{i=1}^k D_i$ be vertex-pancyclic. This result extends a result obtained by Cordero-Michel, Galeana-Sánchez and Goldfeder in 2016.

Tighter Bounds on Directed Ramsey Number R(7)
Published • View Publication • BIB
Tournaments are orientations of the complete graph, and the directed Ramsey number $R(k)$ is the minimum number of vertices a tournament must have to be guaranteed to contain a transitive subtournament of size $k$, which we denote by $TT_k$. We include a computer-assisted proof of a conjecture by Sanchez-Flores that all $TT_6$-free tournaments on 24 and 25 vertices are subtournaments of $ST_{27}$, the unique largest TT_6-free tournament. We also classify all $TT_6$-free tournaments on 23 vertices. We use these results, combined with assistance from SAT technology, to obtain the following improved bounds: $34 \leq R(7) \leq 47$.

Stability phenomena for resonance arrangements

We prove that the ith graded pieces of the Orlik-Solomon algebras or Cordovil algebras of resonance arrangements form a finitely generated FS^op-module, thus obtaining information about the growth of their dimensions and restrictions on the irreducible representations of symmetric groups that they contain.
Best Match Graphs with Binary Trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
Best match graphs (BMG) are a key intermediate in graph-based orthology detection and contain a large amount of information on the gene tree. We provide a near-cubic algorithm to determine whether a BMG is binary-explainable, i.e., whether it can be explained by a fully resolved gene tree and, if so, to construct such a tree. Moreover, we show that all such binary trees are refinements of the unique binary-resolvable tree (BRT), which in general is a substantial refinement of the also unique least resolved tree of a BMG. Finally, we show that the problem of editing an arbitrary vertex-colored graph to a binary-explainable BMG is NP-complete and provide an integer linear program formulation for this task.

Graphs containing finite induced paths of unbounded length
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 23 no. 2, special issue in honour of Maurice Pouzet, Special issues (March 8, 2022) dmtcs:6915 • View Publication • BIB
The age $\mathcal{A}(G)$ of a graph $G$ (undirected and without loops) is the collection of finite induced subgraphs of $G$, considered up to isomorphy and ordered by embeddability. It is well-quasi-ordered (wqo) for this order if it contains no infinite antichain. A graph is \emph{path-minimal} if it contains finite induced paths of unbounded length and every induced subgraph $G'$ with this property embeds $G$. We construct $2^{\aleph_0}$ path-minimal graphs whose ages are pairwise incomparable with set inclusion and which are wqo. Our construction is based on uniformly recurrent sequences and lexicographical sums of labelled graphs.

Optimal bounds for the colorful fractional Helly theorem
The well known fractional Helly theorem and colorful Helly theorem can be merged into the so called colorful fractional Helly theorem. It states: For every $α\in (0, 1]$ and every non-negative integer $d$, there is $β_{col} = β_{col}(α, d) \in (0, 1]$ with the following property. Let $\mathcal{F}_1, \dots, \mathcal{F}_{d+1}$ be finite nonempty families of convex sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ of sizes $n_1, \dots, n_{d+1}$ respectively. If at least $αn_1 n_2 \cdots n_{d+1}$ of the colorful $(d+1)$-tuples have a nonempty intersection, then there is $i \in [d+1]$ such that $\mathcal{F}_i$ contains a subfamily of size at least $β_{col} n_i$ with a nonempty intersection. (A colorful $(d+1)$-tuple is a $(d+1)$-tuple $(F_1, \dots , F_{d+1})$ such that $F_i$ belongs to $\mathcal{F}_i$ for every $i$.) The colorful fractional Helly theorem was first stated and proved by Bárány, Fodor, Montejano, Oliveros, and Pór in 2014 with $β_{col} = α/(d+1)$. In 2017 Kim proved the theorem with better function $β_{col}$, which in particular tends to $1$ when $α$ tends to $1$. Kim also conjectured what is the optimal bound for $β_{col}(α, d)$ and provided the upper bound example for the optimal bound. The conjectured bound coincides with the optimal bounds for the (non-colorful) fractional Helly theorem proved independently by Eckhoff and Kalai around 1984. We verify Kim's conjecture by extending Kalai's approach to the colorful scenario. Moreover, we obtain optimal bounds also in more general setting when we allow several sets of the same color.

Associahedra, cyclohedra and inversion of power series
We introduce the Hopf monoid of sets of cycles and paths, which contains the Faà di Bruno Hopf monoid as a submonoid. We give cancellation-free and grouping-free formulas for its antipode, one in terms of tubings and one in terms of \emph{pointed} noncrossing partitions. We provide an explicit description of the group of characters of this Hopf monoid in terms of pairs of power series. Using graph associahedra, we relate paths and cycles to associahedra and cyclohedra, respectively. We give formulas for inversion in the group of characters in terms of the faces of these polytopes.
