Some new results about a conjecture by Brian Alspach
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we consider the following conjecture, proposed by Brian Alspach, concerning partial sums in finite cyclic groups: given a subset $A$ of $\mathbb{Z}_n\setminus \{0\}$ of size $k$ such that $\sum_{z\in A} z\not= 0$, it is possible to find an ordering $(a_1,\ldots,a_k)$ of the elements of $A$ such that the partial sums $s_i=\sum_{j=1}^i a_j$, $i=1,\ldots,k$, are nonzero and pairwise distinct. This conjecture is known to be true for subsets of size $k\leq 11$ in cyclic groups of prime order. Here, we extend such result to any torsion-free abelian group and, as a consequence, we provide an asymptotic result in $\mathbb{Z}_n$. We also consider a related conjecture, originally proposed by Ronald Graham: given a subset $A$ of $\mathbb{Z}_p\setminus\{0\}$, where $p$ is a prime, there exists an ordering of the elements of $A$ such that the partial sums are all distinct. Working with the methods developed by Hicks, Ollis and Schmitt, based on the Alon's combinatorial Nullstellensatz, we prove the validity of such conjecture for subsets $A$ of size $12$.

Finite cubic graphs admitting an cyclic group of automorphisms with at most three orbits on vertices
The theory of voltage graphs has become a standard tool in the study graphs admitting a semiregular group of automorphisms. We introduce the notion of a cyclic generalised voltage graph to extend the scope of this theory to graphs admitting a cyclic group of automorphism that may not be semiregular. We use this new tool to classify all cubic graphs admitting a cyclic group of automorphisms with at most three vertex-orbits and we characterise vertextransitivity for each of these classes. In particular, we show that a cubic vertex-transitive graph admitting a cyclic group of automorphisms with at most three orbits on vertices either belongs to one of 5 infinite families or is isomorphic to the well-know Tutte-Coxeter graph.

On zero-sum free sequences contained in random subsets of finite cyclic groups
Published in Discrete Appl. Math. 330 (2023), 118 - 127 • View PublicationBIB
Let $C_n$ be a cyclic group of order $n$. A sequence $S$ of length $\ell$ over $C_n$ is a sequence $S = a_1\boldsymbol\cdot a_2\boldsymbol\cdot \ldots\boldsymbol\cdot a_{\ell}$ of $\ell$ elements in $C_n$, where a repetition of elements is allowed and their order is disregarded. We say that $S$ is a zero-sum sequence if $Σ_{i=1}^{\ell} a_i = 0$ and that $S$ is a zero-sum free sequence if $S$ contains no zero-sum subsequence. Let $R$ be a random subset of $C_n$ obtained by choosing each element in $C_n$ independently with probability $p$. Let $N^R_{n-1-k}$ be the number of zero-sum free sequences of length $n-1-k$ in $R$. Also, let $N^R_{n-1-k,d}$ be the number of zero-sum free sequences of length $n-1-k$ having $d$ distinct elements in $R$. We obtain the expectation of $N^R_{n-1-k}$ and $N^R_{n-1-k,d}$ for $0\leq k\leq \big\lfloor \frac{n}{3} \big\rfloor$. We also show a concentration result on $N^R_{n-1-k}$ and $N^R_{n-1-k,d}$ when $k$ is fixed.

On an inverse problem of Erd\H os, Kleitman, and Lemke
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $(G, 1_G)$ be a finite group and let $S=g_1\bdot \ldots\bdot g_{\ell}$ be a nonempty sequence over $G$. We say $S$ is a tiny product-one sequence if its terms can be ordered such that their product equals $1_G$ and $\sum_{i=1}^{\ell}\frac{1}{\ord(g_i)}\le 1$. Let $\mathsf {ti}(G)$ be the smallest integer $t$ such that every sequence $S$ over $G$ with $|S|\ge t$ has a tiny product-one subsequence. The direct problem is to obtain the exact value of $\mathsf {ti}(G)$, while the inverse problem is to characterize the structure of long sequences over $G$ which have no tiny product-one subsequences. In this paper, we consider the inverse problem for cyclic groups and we also study both direct and inverse problems for dihedral groups and dicyclic groups.
Equivariant homotopy commutativity for $G=C_{pqr}$
We investigate the combinatorial data arising from the classification of equivariant homotopy commutativity for cyclic groups of order $G=C_{p_1 \cdots p_n}$ for $p_i$ distinct primes. In particular, we will prove a structural result which allows us to enumerate the number of $N_\infty$-operads for $C_{pqr}$, verifying a computational result.

Isometries between finite groups
We prove that if $H$ is a subgroup of index $n$ of any cyclic group $G$, then $G$ can be isometrically embedded in $(H^n, d_{_{Ham}}^n)$, thus generalizing previous results of Carlet (1998) for $G=\mathbb{Z}_{2^k}$ and Yildiz-Özger (2012) for $G=\mathbb{Z}_{p^k}$ with $p$ prime. Next, for any positive integer $q$ we define the $q$-adic metric $d_q$ in $\mathbb{Z}_{q^n}$ and prove that $(\mathbb{Z}_{q^n}, d_q)$ is isometric to $(\mathbb{Z}_q^n, d_{RT})$ for every $n$, where $d_{RT}$ is the Rosenbloom-Tsfasman metric. More generally, we then demonstrate that any pair of finite groups of the same cardinality are isometric to each other for some metrics that can be explicitly constructed. Finally, we consider a chain $\mathcal{C}$ of subgroups of a given group and define the chain metric $d_{\mathcal{C}}$ and chain isometries between two chains. Let $G, K$ be groups with $|G|=q^n$, $|K|=q$ and let $H<G$. Using chains, we prove that under certain conditions, $(G,d_\mathcal{C}) \simeq (K^n, d_{RT})$ and $(G,d_\mathcal{C}) \simeq (H^{[G:H]}, d_{BRT})$ where $d_{BRT}$ is the block Rosenbloom-Tsfasman metric which generalizes $d_{RT}$.

Uniform mixing on integral abelian Cayley graph
In the past few decades, quantum algorithms have become a popular research area of both mathematicians and engineers. Among them, uniform mixing provides a uniform probability distribution of quantum information over time which attracts a special attention. However, there are only a few known examples of graphs which admit uniform mixing. In this paper, a characterization of abelian Cayley graphs having uniform mixing is presented. Some concrete constructions of such graphs are provided. Specifically, for cubelike graphs, it is shown that the Cayley graph ${\rm Cay}(\mathbb{F}_2^{2k};S)$ has uniform mixing if the characteristic function of $S$ is bent. Moreover, a difference-balanced property of the eigenvalues of an integral abelian Cayley graph having uniform mixing is established. Some nonexistence results of uniform mixing on abelian Cayley graphs are presented also. Notably, for a linear abelian Cayley graph $Γ$ over $\mathbb{Z}_n^r$, it is proved that uniform mixing occurs on this graph only if $n=2,3,4$ which partially confirms a long-standing conjecture. Finally, with some restrictions on the connection set, we show that if a cyclic group $G$ whose order is divisible by an odd prime such that ${\rm Cay}(G,S)$ has uniform mixing at some time $t$ being a rational multiple of $π$, then the graph should be integral. An interesting reduction method on the circulant Cayley graphs having uniform mixing has been established. Using this method, we can answer some related open questions. For example, we can show that the only two cycles having uniform mixing are $C_3$ and $C_4$.
Deviation probabilities for arithmetic progressions and other regular discrete structures
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let the random variable $X\, :=\, e(\mathcal{H}[B])$ count the number of edges of a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ induced by a random $m$ element subset $B$ of its vertex set. Focussing on the case that $\mathcal{H}$ satisfies some regularity condition we prove bounds on the probability that $X$ is far from its mean. It is possible to apply these results to discrete structures such as the set of $k$-term arithmetic progressions in the cyclic group $\mathbb{Z}_N$. Furthermore, we show that our main theorem is essentially best possible and we deduce results for the case $B\sim B_p$ is generated by including each vertex independently with probability $p$.

On the existence of integer relative Heffter arrays
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $v=2ms+t$ be a positive integer, where $t$ divides $2ms$, and let $J$ be the subgroup of order $t$ of the cyclic group $\mathbb{Z}_v$. An integer Heffter array $H_t(m,n;s,k)$ over $\mathbb{Z}_v$ relative to $J$ is an $m\times n$ partially filled array with elements in $\mathbb{Z}_v$ such that: (a) each row contains $s$ filled cells and each column contains $k$ filled cells; (b) for every $x\in \mathbb{Z}_v \setminus J$, either $x$ or $-x$ appears in the array; (c) the elements in every row and column, viewed as integers in $\pm\left\{ 1, \ldots, \left\lfloor \frac{v}{2}\right\rfloor \right\}$, sum to $0$ in $\mathbb{Z}$. In this paper we study the existence of an integer $H_t(m,n;s,k)$ when $s$ and $k$ are both even, proving the following results. Suppose that $4\leq s\leq n$ and $4\leq k \leq m$ are such that $ms=nk$. Let $t$ be a divisor of $2ms$. (a) If $s,k \equiv 0 \pmod 4$, there exists an integer $H_t(m,n;s,k)$. (b) If $s\equiv 2\pmod 4$ and $k\equiv 0 \pmod 4$, there exists an integer $H_t(m,n;s,k)$ if and only if $m$ is even. (c) If $s\equiv 0\pmod 4$ and $k\equiv 2 \pmod 4$, then there exists an integer $H_t(m,n;s,k)$ if and only if $n$ is even. (d) Suppose that $m$ and $n$ are both even. If $s,k\equiv 2 \pmod 4$, then there exists an integer $H_t(m,n;s,k)$.

Multi-Macdonald polynomials
We introduce Macdonald polynomials indexed by $n$-tuples of partitions and characterized by certain orthogonality and triangularity relations. We prove that they can be explicitly given as products of ordinary Macdonald polynomials depending on special alphabets. With this factorization in hand, we establish their most basic properties, such as explicit formulas for their norm-squared, evaluation and reproducing kernel. Moreover, we show that the $q,t$-Kostka coefficients associated to the multi-Macdonald polynomials are positive and correspond to $q,t$-analogs of the dimensions of the irreducible representations of $C_n \sim S_d$, the wreath product of the cyclic group $C_n$ with the symmetric group.

Tetravalent half-arc-transitive graphs with unbounded nonabelian vertex stabilizers
Published • View PublicationBIB
Half-arc-transitive graphs are a fascinating topic which connects graph theory, Riemann surfaces and group theory. Although fruitful results have been obtained over the last half a century, it is still challenging to construct half-arc-transitive graphs with prescribed vertex stabilizers. Until recently, there have been only six known connected tetravalent half-arc-transitive graphs with nonabelian vertex stabilizers, and the question whether there exists a connected tetravalent half-arc-transitive graph with nonabelian vertex stabilizer of order $2^s$ for every $s\geqslant3$ has been wide open. This question is answered in the affirmative in this paper via the construction of a connected tetravalent half-arc-transitive graph with vertex stabilizer $\mathrm{D}_8^2\times\mathrm{C}_2^m$ for each integer $m\geqslant1$, where $\mathrm{D}_8^2$ is the direct product of two copies of the dihedral group of order $8$ and $\mathrm{C}_2^m$ is the direct product of $m$ copies of the cyclic group of order $2$. The graphs constructed have surprisingly many significant properties in various contexts.

The NNN-Property of Cyclic Groups
A Cayley graph is said to be an NNN-graph if it is both normal and non-normal for isomorphic regular groups, and a group has the NNN-property if there exists an NNN-graph for it. In this paper we investigate the NNN-property of cyclic groups, and show that cyclic groups do not have the NNN-property.

Cyclic Sieving for Plane Partitions and Symmetry
Published in SIGMA 16 (2020), 130, 40 pages • View PublicationBIB
The cyclic sieving phenomenon of Reiner, Stanton, and White says that we can often count the fixed points of elements of a cyclic group acting on a combinatorial set by plugging roots of unity into a polynomial related to this set. One of the most impressive instances of the cyclic sieving phenomenon is a theorem of Rhoades asserting that the set of plane partitions in a rectangular box under the action of promotion exhibits cyclic sieving. In Rhoades's result the sieving polynomial is the size generating function for these plane partitions, which has a well-known product formula due to MacMahon. We extend Rhoades's result by also considering symmetries of plane partitions: specifically, complementation and transposition. The relevant polynomial here is the size generating function for symmetric plane partitions, whose product formula was conjectured by MacMahon and proved by Andrews and Macdonald. Finally, we explain how these symmetry results also apply to the rowmotion operator on plane partitions, which is closely related to promotion.

Crystals, semistandard tableaux and cyclic sieving phenomenon
In this paper, we study a new cyclic sieving phenomenon on the set $\mathsf{SST}_n(λ)$ of semistandard Young tableaux with the cyclic action $\mathsf{c}$ arising from its $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_n)$-crystal structure. We prove that if $λ$ is a Young diagram with $\ell(λ) < n$ and $\gcd( n, |λ| )=1$, then the triple $\left( \mathsf{SST}_n(λ), \mathsf{C}, q^{- κ(λ)} s_λ(1,q, \ldots, q^{n-1}) \right) $ exhibits the cyclic sieving phenomenon, where $\mathsf{C}$ is the cyclic group generated by $\mathsf{c}$. We further investigate a connection between $\mathsf{c}$ and the promotion $\mathsf{pr}$ and show the bicyclic sieving phenomenon given by $\mathsf{c}$ and $\mathsf{pr}^n$ for hook shape.

Partition function of the cyclic group
This paper addresses the problem of finding $Q_{m,t}\left(n\right)$, the number of possible ways to partition any member $n$ of the cyclic group $\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$ into $t$ distinct parts. When $m$ is odd, it was previously known that the number of partitions of the identity element $0\bmod m$ with distinct parts is equal to the number of possible bi-color necklaces with $m$ beads. This paper will expand upon this result by showing the equivalence between $Q_{m,t}\left(n\right)$ and the number of bi-color necklaces meeting certain periodicity requirements, even when $m$ is even.

Comer Schemes, Relation Algebras, and the Flexible Atom Conjecture
Published in Fundamenta Informaticae, Volume 195, Issues 1-4: Relational and Algebraic Methods in Computer Science 2024 (December 27, 2025) fi:12328 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we consider relational structures arising from Comer's finite field construction, where the cosets need not be sum free. These Comer schemes generalize the notion of a Ramsey scheme and may be of independent interest. As an application, we give the first finite representation of $34_{65}$. This leaves $33_{65}$ as the only remaining relation algebra in the family $N_{65}$ with a flexible atom that is not known to be finitely representable. Motivated by this, we complement our upper bounds with some lower bounds. Using a SAT solver, we show that $33_{65}$ is not finitely representable on fewer than $24$ points, and that $33_{65}$ does not admit a cyclic group representation on fewer than $120$ points. We also employ a SAT solver to show that $34_{65}$ is not representable on fewer than $24$ points.
On the minimum degree of the power graph of a finite cyclic group
The power graph $\mathcal{P}(G)$ of a finite group $G$ is the simple undirected graph whose vertex set is $G$, in which two distinct vertices are adjacent if one of them is an integral power of the other. For an integer $n\geq 2$, let $C_n$ denote the cyclic group of order $n$ and let $r$ be the number of distinct prime divisors of $n$. The minimum degree $δ(\mathcal{P}(C_n))$ of $\mathcal{P}(C_n)$ is known for $r\in\{1,2\}$, see [18]. For $r\geq 3$, under certain conditions involving the prime divisors of $n$, we identify at most $r-1$ vertices such that $δ(\mathcal{P}(C_n))$ is equal to the degree of at least one of these vertices. If $r=3$ or if $n$ is a product of distinct primes, we are able to identify two such vertices without any condition on the prime divisors of $n$.

Orbits of Hamiltonian Paths and Cycles in Complete Graphs
Published in Journal of Integer Sequences, Vol.23 (2020) • Search Publication
We enumerate certain geometric equivalence classes of subgraphs induced by Hamiltonian paths and cycles in complete graphs. Said classes are orbits under the action of certain direct products of dihedral and cyclic groups on sets of strings representing subgraphs. These orbits are enumerated using Burnside's lemma. The technique used also provides an alternative proof of the formulae found by S. W. Golomb and L. R. Welch which give the number of distinct $n$-gons on fixed, regularly spaced vertices up to rotation and optionally reflection.

$N_\infty$-operads and associahedra

We provide a new combinatorial approach to studying the collection of N-infinity-operads in G-equivariant homotopy theory for G a finite cyclic group. In particular, we show that for G the cyclic group of order p^n the natural order on the collection of N-infinity-operads stands in bijection with the poset structure of the (n+1)-associahedron. We further provide a lower bound for the number of possible N-infinity-operads for any finite cyclic group G.

Complete graph decompositions and p-groupoids
We study P-groupoids that arise from certain decompositions of complete graphs. We show that left distributive P-groupoids are distributive, quasigroups. We characterize P-groupoids when the corresponding decomposition is a Hamiltonian decomposition for complete graphs of odd, prime order. We also study a specific example of a P-quasigroup constructed from cyclic groups of odd order. We show such P-quasigroups have characteristic left and right multiplication groups, as well as the right multiplication group is isomorphic to the dihedral group.
