A set $\mathcal{S}$ of derangements (fixed-point-free permutations) of a set $V$ generates a digraph with vertex set $V$ and arcs $(x,x^σ)$ for $x\in V$ and $σ\in\mathcal{S}$. We address the problem of characterising those infinite (simple loopless) digraphs which are generated by finite sets of derangements. The case of finite digraphs was addressed in earlier work by the second and third authors. A criterion is given for derangement generation which resembles the criterion given by De Bruijn and Erdős for vertex colourings of graphs in that the property for an infinite digraph is determined by properties of its finite sub-digraphs. The derangement generation property for a digraph is linked with the existence of a finite $1$-factor cover for an associated bipartite (undirected) graph.

A formula of Stembridge states that the permutation peak polynomials and descent polynomials are connected via a quadratique transformation. The aim of this paper is to establish the cycle analogue of Stembridge's formula by using cycle peaks and excedances of permutations. We prove a series of new general formulae expressing polynomials counting permutations by various excedance statistics in terms of refined Eulerian polynomials. Our formulae are comparable with Zhuang's generalizations [Adv. in Appl. Math. 90 (2017) 86-144] using descent statistics of permutations. Our methods include permutation enumeration techniques involving variations of classical bijections from permutations to Laguerre histories, explicit continued fraction expansions of combinatorial generating functions in Shin and Zeng [European J. Combin. 33 (2012), no. 2, 111--127] and cycle version of modified Foata-Strehl action. We also prove similar formulae for restricted permutations such as derangements and permutations avoiding certain patterns. Moreover, we provide new combinatorial interpretations for the $γ$-coefficients of the inversion polynomials restricted on $321$-avoiding permutations.

We show that each perfect matching in a bipartite graph $G$ intersects at least half of the perfect matchings in $G$. This result has equivalent formulations in terms of the permanent of the adjacency matrix of a graph, and in terms of derangements and permutations on graphs. We give several related results and open questions.

Let $1\leq k \leq n$ and let $X_n = (x_1, \dots, x_n)$ be a list of $n$ variables. The {\em Boolean product polynomial} $B_{n,k}(X_n)$ is the product of the linear forms $\sum_{i \in S} x_i$ where $S$ ranges over all $k$-element subsets of $\{1, 2, \dots, n\}$. We prove that Boolean product polynomials are Schur positive. We do this via a new method of proving Schur positivity using vector bundles and a symmetric function operation we call {\em Chern plethysm}. This gives a geometric method for producing a vast array of Schur positive polynomials whose Schur positivity lacks (at present) a combinatorial or representation theoretic proof. We relate the polynomials $B_{n,k}(X_n)$ for certain $k$ to other combinatorial objects including derangements, positroids, alternating sign matrices, and reverse flagged fillings of a partition shape. We also relate $B_{n,n-1}(X_n)$ to a bigraded action of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ on a divergence free quotient of superspace.

We prove various formulas which express exponential generating functions counting permutations by the peak number, valley number, double ascent number, and double descent number statistics in terms of the exponential generating function for Chebyshev polynomials, as well as cyclic analogues of these formulas for derangements. We give several applications of these results, including formulas for the $(-1)$-evaluation of some of these distributions. Our proofs are combinatorial and involve the use of monomino-domino tilings, the modified Foata-Strehl action (a.k.a. valley-hopping), and a cyclic analogue of this action due to Sun and Wang.
Gamma positivity of the Excedance based Eulerian polynomial in positive elements of Classical Weyl Groups
The classical Eulerian polynomials $A_n(t)$ are known to be gamma positive. Define the positive Eulerian polynomial $\mathsf{AExc^{+}}_n(t)$ as the polynomial obtained when we sum excedances over the alternating group. We show that $\mathsf{AExc^{+}}_n(t)$ is gamma positive iff $n \geq 5$ and $n \equiv 1$ (mod 2). When $n \geq 4$, and $n \equiv 0$ (mod 2) we show that $\mathsf{AExc^{+}}_n(t)$ can be written as a sum of two gamma positive polynomials.
Similar results are shown when we consider the positive type-D and type-D Eulerian polynomials.
Finally, we show gamma positivity results when we sum excedances over derangements with positive and negative sign. Our main resuls is that the polynomial obtained by summing excedance over a conjugacy class indexed by $λ$ is gamma positive.
On the Homogenized Linial Arrangement: Intersection Lattice and Genocchi Numbers
Hetyei recently introduced a hyperplane arrangement (called the homogenized Linial arrangement) and used the finite field method of Athanasiadis to show that its number of regions is a median Genocchi number. These numbers count a class of permutations known as Dumont derangements. Here, we take a different approach, which makes direct use of Zaslavsky's formula relating the intersection lattice of this arrangement to the number of regions. We refine Hetyei's result by obtaining a combinatorial interpretation of the Möbius function of this lattice in terms of variants of the Dumont permutations. This enables us to derive a formula for the generating function of the characterisitic polynomial of the arrangement. The Möbius invariant of the lattice turns out to be a (nonmedian) Genocchi number. Our techniques also yield type B, and more generally Dowling arrangement, analogs of these results.

For the word $ω= \underbrace{11\ldots 1}_{x_1}\underbrace{22\ldots2}_{x_2}\ldots\underbrace{nn\ldots n}_{x_n},$ denote by $\mathsf{A}(x_1, x_2, \ldots, x_n)$ the number of its anagrams without fixed letters. While the function $\mathsf{A}()$ bears significant importance to economic theory \cite{MCKELVEY1997411}, it is not known whether it can be computed in polynomial time. The desire to answer efficiently certain queries related to this function motivates our study of its combinatorial properties. Our first main result shows that $\mathsf{A}(x_1, x_2, \ldots, x_n)\pmod{p}$ can be efficiently computed for any prime $p = O((\log n)^{1/3}).$ Our second main result establishes that the function $\mathsf{A}()$ is Schur-concave, which means that certain ordinal queries about $\mathsf{A}()$ can be answered in linearithmic time.
Our second direction of study is structural. We introduce the anagraph, which generalizes derangement graphs. For $(x_1, x_2, \ldots, x_n)\in \mathbb{Z}_{\ge 0}^n,$ $\mathcal{AG}(x_1, x_2, \ldots, x_n)$ is a graph on vertex set all words over the alphabet $[n]$ which have exactly $x_i$ letters $i.$ Two vertices are adjacent if they are anagrams without fixed letters of each other. Our main result fully determines the $n$-tuples $(x_1, \ldots, x_n)$ for which the anagraph is connected and leads to a linear algorithm for this task. We end with a conjecture, which fits into the ongoing debate about the connection between hamiltonicity and vertex-transitivity \cite{transitive}.
One contribution of the current paper is a systematic development of techniques for analyzing anagrams without fixed letters. We illustrate the power of these techniques with further arithmetic, ordinal, and structural results.

In algebraic, topological, and geometric combinatorics inequalities among the coefficients of combinatorial polynomials are frequently studied. Recently a notion called the alternatingly increasing property, which is stronger than unimodality, was introduced. In this paper, we relate the alternatingly increasing property to real-rootedness of the symmetric decomposition of a polynomial to develop a systematic approach for proving the alternatingly increasing property for several classes of polynomials. We apply our results to strengthen and generalize real-rootedness, unimodality, and alternatingly increasing results pertaining to colored Eulerian and derangement polynomials, Ehrhart $h^\ast$-polynomials for lattice zonotopes, $h$-polynomials of barycentric subdivisions of doubly Cohen-Macaulay level simplicial complexes, and certain local $h$-polynomials for subdivisions of simplices. In particular, we prove two conjectures of Athanasiadis.
Derangements, Ehrhart Theory, and Local h-polynomials

The Eulerian polynomials and derangement polynomials are two well-studied generating functions that frequently arise in combinatorics, algebra, and geometry. When one makes an appearance, the other often does so as well, and their corresponding generalizations are similarly linked. This is this case in the theory of subdivisions of simplicial complexes, where the Eulerian polynomial is an $h$-polynomial and the derangement polynomial is its local $h$-polynomial. Separately, in Ehrhart theory the Eulerian polynomials are generalized by the $h^\ast$-polynomials of $s$-lecture hall simplices. Here, we show that derangement polynomials are analogously generalized by the box polynomials, or local $h^\ast$-polynomials, of the $s$-lecture hall simplices, and that these polynomials are all real-rooted. We then connect the two theories by showing that the local $h$-polynomials of common subdivisions in algebra and topology are realized as local $h^\ast$-polynomials of $s$-lecture hall simplices. We use this connection to address some open questions on real-rootedness and unimodality of generating polynomials, some from each side of the story.
Boolean product polynomials and Schur-positivity
We study a family of symmetric polynomials that we refer to as the Boolean product polynomials. The motivation for studying these polynomials stems from the computation of the characteristic polynomial of the real matroid spanned by the nonzero vectors in $\mathbb{R}^n$ all of whose coordinates are either $0$ or $1$. To this end, one approach is to compute the zeros of the Boolean product polynomials over finite fields. The zero loci of these polynomials cut out hyperplane arrangements known as resonance arrangements, which show up in the context of double Hurwitz polynomials. By relating the Boolean product polynomials to certain total Chern classes of vector bundles, we establish their Schur-positivity by appealing to a result of Pragacz relying on earlier work on numerical positivity by Fulton-Lazarsfeld. Subsequently, we study a two-alphabet version of these polynomials from the viewpoint of Schur-positivity. As a special case of these polynomials, we recover symmetric functions first studied by Désarménien and Wachs in the context of descents in derangements.

We study the family of \emph{derangement action digraphs}, which are a subfamily of the group action graphs introduced in [Fred Annexstein, Marc Baumslag, and Arnold L. Rosenberg, Group action graphs and parallel architectures, \emph{SIAM J. Comput.} 19 (1990), no. 3, 544--569]. For any non-empty set $X$ and a non-empty subset $S$ of $\Der(X)$, the set of derangments of $X$, we define the derangement action digraph $\rm\overrightarrow{DA}(X;S)$ to have vertex set $X$, and an arc from $x$ to $y$ if and only if $y=x^s$ for some $s\in S$. In common with Cayley graphs and digraphs, derangement action digraphs may be useful to model networks as the same routing and communication scheme can be implemented at each vertex. We determine necessary and sufficient conditions on $S$ under which $\rm\overrightarrow{DA}(X;S)$ may be viewed as a simple graph of valency $|S|$, and we call such graphs derangement action graphs. Also we investigate the structural and symmetry properties of these digraphs and graphs. Several open problems are posed and many examples are given.

The classical derangement numbers count fixed point-free permutations. In this paper we study the enumeration problem of generalized derangements, when some of the elements are restricted to be in distinct cycles in the cycle decomposition. We find exact formula, combinatorial relations for these numbers as well as analytic and asymptotic description. Moreover, we study deeper number theoretical properties, like modularity, $p$-adic valuations, and diophantine problems.

In this paper, we study gamma-positivity of descent-type polynomials by introducing the change of context-free grammars method. We first present grammatical proofs of the gamma-positivity of the Eulerian polynomials, type B Eulerian polynomials, derangement polynomials, Narayana polynomials and type B Narayana polynomials. We then provide partial gamma-positive expansions for several multivariate polynomials associated to Stirling permutations, Legendre-Stirling permutations, Jacobi-Stirling permutations and type B derangements, and the recurrences for the partial gamma-coefficients of these expansions are also obtained. Moreover, we define variants of the Foata-Strehl group action which are used to give combinatorial interpretations for the coefficients of most of these partial gamma-positive expansions.

The $n$-th rencontres number with the parameter $r$ is the number of permutations having exactly $r$ fixed points. In particular, a derangement is a permutation without any fixed point. We presents a short combinatorial proof for a weighted sum derangement identities.
Refinements of the Bell and Stirling numbers
We introduce new refinements of the Bell, factorial, and unsigned Stirling numbers of the first and second kind that unite the derangement, involution, associated factorial, associated Bell, incomplete Stirling, restricted factorial, restricted Bell, and $r$-derangement numbers (and probably more!). By combining methods from analytic combinatorics, umbral calculus, and probability theory, we derive several recurrence relations and closed form expressions for these numbers. By specializing our results to the classical case, we recover explicit formulae for the Bell and Stirling numbers as sums over compositions.
Zeons, Permanents, the Johnson scheme, and Generalized Derangements

Starting with the zero-square "zeon algebra" the connection with permanents is shown. Permanents of sub-matrices of a linear combination of the identity matrix and all-ones matrix leads to moment polynomials with respect to the exponential distribution. A permanent trace formula analogous to MacMahon's Master Theorem is presented and applied. Connections with permutation groups acting on sets and the Johnson association scheme arise. The families of numbers appearing as matrix entries turn out to be related to interesting variations on derangements. These generalized derangements are considered in detail as an illustration of the theory.

In this paper we consider the derangement graph for the group $\textrm{PSU}(3,q)$ where $q$ is a prime power. We calculate all eigenvalues for this derangement graph and use these eigenvalues to prove that $\textrm{PSU}(3,q)$ has the Erdős-Ko-Rado property and, provided that $q\neq 2, 5$, another property that we call the {\textsl Erdős-Ko-Rado module property}.

It is a classical result that the parity-balance of the number of weak excedances of all permutations (derangements, respectively) of length $n$ is the Euler number $E_n$, alternating in sign, if $n$ is odd (even, respectively). Josuat-Vergès obtained a $q$-analog of the results respecting the number of crossings of a permutation. One of the goals in this paper is to extend the results to the permutations (derangements, respectively) of types B and D, on the basis of the joint distribution in statistics excedances, crossings and the number of negative entries obtained by Corteel, Josuat-Vergès and Kim.
Springer numbers are analogous Euler numbers that count the alternating permutations of type B, called snakes. Josuat-Vergès derived bivariate polynomials $Q_n(t,q)$ and $R_n(t,q)$ as generalized Euler numbers via successive $q$-derivatives and multiplications by $t$ on polynomials in $t$. The other goal in this paper is to give a combinatorial interpretation of $Q_n(t,q)$ and $R_n(t,q)$ as the enumerators of the snakes with restrictions.

In this paper, we answer two questions on local $h$-vectors, which were asked by Athanasiadis. First, we characterize all possible local $h$-vectors of quasi-geometric subdivisions of a simplex. Second, we prove that the local $γ$-vector of the barycentric subdivision of any CW-regular subdivision of a simplex is nonnegative. Along the way, we derive a new recurrence formula for the derangement polynomials.
