Elementary symmetric polynomials under the fixed point measure
We identify a surprising inequality satisfied by elementary symmetric polynomials under the action of the fixed point measure of a random permutation. Concretely, for any collection of $n$ non-negative real numbers $a_1, \dots, a_n \in \mathbb{R}_{\geq 0}$, we prove that
\[
\frac{1}{n!} \sum_{π\in S_n} \left[\prod_{\{i:i=π(i)\}} a_i\right] \ge \frac{1}{\binom{n}{2}} \sum_{S \in\binom{[n]}{2}} \left[ \left(\prod_{\{i \in S\}} a_i \right)^{1/2}\right],
\]
and this bound is sharp. To prove this elementary inequality, we construct a collection of differential operators to set up a monotone flow that then allows us to establish the inequality.
Cyclic Sieving of Multisets with Bounded Multiplicity and the Frobenius Coin Problem
The two subjects in the title are related via the specialization of symmetric polynomials at roots of unity. Let $f(z_1,\ldots,z_n)\in\mathbb{Z}[z_1,\ldots,z_n]$ be a symmetric polynomial with integer coefficients and let $ω$ be a primitive $d$th root of unity. If $d|n$ or $d|(n-1)$ then we have $f(1,\ldots,ω^{n-1})\in\mathbb{Z}$. If $d|n$ then of course we have $f(ω,\ldots,ω^n)=f(1,\ldots,ω^{n-1})\in\mathbb{Z}$, but when $d|(n+1)$ we also have $f(ω,\ldots,ω^n)\in\mathbb{Z}$. We investigate these three families of integers in the case $f=h_k^{(b)}$, where $h_k^{(b)}$ is the coefficient of $t^k$ in the generating function $\prod_{i=1}^n (1+z_it+\cdots+(z_it)^{b-1})$. These polynomials were previously considered by several authors. They interpolate between the elementary symmetric polynomials ($b$=2) and the complete homogeneous symmetric polynomials ($b\to\infty$). When $\gcd(b,d)=1$ with $d|n$ or $d|(n-1)$ we find that the integers $h_k^{(b)}=(1,ω,\ldots,ω^{n-1})$ are related to cyclic sieving of multisets with multiplicities bounded above by $b$, generalizing the well know cyclic sieving results for sets ($b=2$) and multisets ($b\to \infty$). When $\gcd(b,d)=1$ and $d|(n+1)$ we find that the integers $h_k^{(b)}(ω,ω^2,\ldots,ω^n)$ are related to the Frobenius coin problem with two coins. The case $\gcd(b,d)\neq 1$ is more complicated. At the end of the paper we combine these results with the expansion of $h_k^{(b)}$ in various bases of the ring of symmetric polynomials.
Coinvariant stresses, Lefschetz properties and random complexes
Lefschetz properties and inverse systems have played key roles in understanding the $h$-vector of simplicial spheres. In 1996, Lee established connections between these two algebraic tools and rigidity theory, an area often used in the study of motions of geometric complexes. One of the key ideas, is to translate geometric information about a complex, coming from vertex coordinates, to the algebraic notion of a linear system of parameters. In this paper, we explore similar connections in the nonlinear case, by using recent results of Herzog and Moradi (2021) where they prove that a subset of the elementary symmetric polynomials is always a system of parameters for the Stanley-Reisner ideal of a complex. We investigate connections to the study of Lefschetz properties of monomial ideals. Using this perspective, we recover and extend the well known result of Migliore, Miró-Roig and Nagel on the failure of the WLP of monomial almost complete intersections, by showing that, with one simple exception, every homology sphere has a monomial artinian reduction failing the weak Lefschetz property.
Finally, we state probabilistic consequences of our results under a model introduced by Linial and Meshulam. We prove that there exists an open interval for the probability parameter where failure of Lefschetz properties of monomial ideals should be expected.
An Extension of Pólya's Enumeration Theorem
In combinatorics, Pólya's Enumeration Theorem is a powerful tool for solving a wide range of counting problems, including the enumeration of groups, graphs, and chemical compounds. In this paper, we present an extension of Pólya's Enumeration Theorem. As an application, we derive a formula that expresses the $n$-th elementary symmetric polynomial in $m$ indeterminates (where $n\leq m$) as a variant of the cycle index polynomial of the symmetric group $\mathrm{Sym}(n)$. This result resolves a problem posed by Amdeberhan in 2012.
Gröbner bases, resolutions, and the Lefschetz properties for powers of a general linear form in the squarefree algebra
For the almost complete intersection ideals $(x_1^2, \dots, x_n^2, (x_1 + \cdots + x_n)^k)$, we compute their reduced Gröbner basis for any term ordering, revealing a combinatorial structure linked to lattice paths, elementary symmetric polynomials, and Catalan numbers. Using this structure, we classify the weak Lefschetz property for these ideals. Additionally, we provide a new proof of the well-known result that the squarefree algebra satisfies the strong Lefschetz property. Finally, we compute the Betti numbers of the initial ideals and construct a minimal free resolution using a Mayer-Vietoris tree approach.
A proof of the Stanley--Stembridge conjecture
We give a probabilistic interpretation of the coefficients of the elementary symmetric function expansion of the chromatic quasisymmetric function for any unit interval graph. As a corollary, we prove the Stanley--Stembridge conjecture.
Elementary symmetric partitions
Let e_k(x_1,...,x_l) be an elementary symmetric polynomial and let mu = (mu_1,...,mu_l) be an integer partition. Define pre_k(mu) to be the partition whose parts are the summands in the evaluation e_k(mu_1,...,mu_l). The study of such partitions was initiated by Ballantine, Beck, and Merca who showed (among other things) that pre_2 is injective as a map on binary partitions of n. In the present work we derive a host of identities involving the sequences which count the number of parts of a given value in the image of pre_2. These include generating functions, explicit expressions, and formulas for forward differences. We generalize some of these to d-ary partitions and explore connections with color partitions. Our techniques include the use of generating functions and bijections on rooted partitions. We end with a list of conjectures and a direction for future research.
Partitions and elementary symmetric polynomials -- an experimental approach
Given a partition $λ$, we write $e_j(λ)$ for the $j^{\textrm{th}}$ elementary symmetric polynomial $e_j$ evaluated at the parts of $λ$ and $e_jp_A(n)$ for the sum of $e_j(λ)$ as $λ$ ranges over the set of partitions of $n$ with parts in $A$. For $e_jp_A(n)$, we prove analogs of the classical formula for the partition function, $p(n)=1/n \sum_{k=0}^{n-1}σ_1(n-k)p(k)$, where $σ_1$ is the sum of divisors function. We prove several congruences for $e_2p_4(n)$, the sum of $e_2$ over the set of partitions of $n$ into four parts. Define the function $\textrm{pre}_j(λ)$ to be the multiset of monomials in $e_j(λ)$, which is itself a partition. If $\mathcal A$ is a set of partitions, we define $\textrm{pre}_j(\mathcal A)$ to be the set of partitions $\textrm{pre}_j(λ)$ as $λ$ ranges over $\mathcal A$. If $\mathcal P(n)$ is the set of all partitions of $n$, we conjecture that the number of odd partitions in $\textrm{pre}_2(\mathcal P(n))$ is at least the number of distinct partitions. We prove some results about $\textrm{pre}_2(\mathcal B(n))$, where $\mathcal B(n)$ is the set of binary partitions of $n$. We conclude with conjectures on the log-concavity of functions related to $e_jp(n)$, the sum of $e_j(λ)$ for all $λ\in \mathcal P(n)$.
Chromatic symmetric functions and change of basis
We prove necessary conditions for certain elementary symmetric functions, $e_λ$, to appear with nonzero coefficient in Stanley's chromatic symmetric function as well as in the generalization considered by Shareshian and Wachs. We do this by first considering the expansion in the monomial or Schur basis and then performing a basis change. Using the former, we make a connection with two fundamental graph theory invariants, the independence and clique numbers. This allows us to prove nonnegativity of three-column coefficients for all natural unit interval graphs. The Schur basis permits us to give a new interpretation of the coefficient of $e_n$ in terms of tableaux. We are also able to give an explicit formula for that coefficient.
A Combinatorial Perspective on the Noncommutative Symmetric Functions
The noncommutative symmetric functions $\textbf{NSym}$ were first defined abstractly by Gelfand et al. in 1995 as the free associative algebra generated by noncommuting indeterminants $\{\boldsymbol{e}_n\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ that were taken as a noncommutative analogue of the elementary symmetric functions. The resulting space was thus a variation on the traditional symmetric functions $Λ$. Giving noncommutative analogues of generating function relations for other bases of $Λ$ allowed Gelfand et al. to define additional bases of $\textbf{NSym}$ and then determine change-of-basis formulas using quasideterminants. In this paper, we aim for a self-contained exposition that expresses these bases concretely as functions in infinitely many noncommuting variables and avoids quasideterminants. Additionally, we look at the noncommutative analogues of two different interpretations of change-of-basis in $Λ$: both as a product of a minimal number of matrices, mimicking Macdonald's exposition of $Λ$ in Symmetric Functions and Hall Polynomials, and as statistics on brick tabloids, as in work by Eğecioğlu and Remmel, 1990.
Invariants of structures
We give a categorification of the notion of a mathematical structure originally given by Bourbaki in their set theory textbook. We show that any isomorphism-invariant property of a finite structure can be computed by counting the number of isomorphic copies of small substructures it contains. Our main theorem in this direction is a generalization of the classical result of Hilbert about elementary symmetric polynomials generating the algebra of all symmetric polynomials. We also show that, for structures built from sets, the Yoneda functor extends to a canonical embedding of any such category of structures into an associated category of structures in the sense of classical model theory.
Two Formulas for the Number of Lines on Complex Projective Hypersurfaces
Two formulas for the classical number $C_n$ of lines on a generic hypersurface of degree $2n-3$ in $\mathbb{CP}^n$ are obtained which differ from the formulas by Dominici, Harris, Libgober, and van der Waerden-Zagier. We review the splitting principle computation by Harris obtaining a similar general closed-form formula in terms of the Catalan numbers and elementary symmetric polynomials. This in turn yields $C_n$ as a linear difference recursion relation of unbounded order. Thus, for the sequence of certain linear combinations of $C_n$, a simple generating function is found. Then, a result from random algebraic geometry by Basu, Lerario, Lundberg, and Peterson, that expresses these classical enumerative invariants as proportional to the Bombieri norm of particular polynomial determinants, yields another combinatorial expansion in terms of certain set compositions and block labeling counting. As an example, we compute this combinatorial interpretation for the cases of 27 lines on a cubic surface and 2875 lines on a quintic threefold. As an application, we reobtain the parity and asymptotic upper bound of the sequence. In an appendix, we generalize the splitting principle calculation to obtain a formula for the number of lines on a generic complete intersection.

We give a Molev-Sagan type formula for computing the product $\mathfrak{S}_u(x;y)\mathfrak{S}_v(x;z)$ of two double Schubert polynomials in different sets of coefficient variables where the descents of $u$ and $v$ satisfy certain conditions that encompass Molev and Sagan's original case and conjecture positivity in the general case. Additionally, we provide a Pieri formula for multiplying an arbitrary double Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak{S}_u(x;y)$ by a factorial elementary symmetric polynomial $E_{p,k}(x;z)$. Both formulas remain positive in terms of the negative roots when we set $y=z$, so in particular this gives a new equivariant Littlewood-Richardson rule for the Grassmannian, and more generally a positive formula for multiplying a factorial Schur polynomial $s_λ(x_1,\ldots,x_m;y)$ by a double Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak{S}_v(x_1,\ldots,x_p;y)$ such that $m\geq p$. An additional new result we present is a combinatorial proof of a conjecture of Kirillov of nonnegativity of the coefficients of skew Schubert polynomials, and we conjecture a weight-preserving bijection between a modification of certain diagrams used in our formulas and RC-graphs/pipe dreams arising in formulas for double Schubert polynomials.

The set $S(n)$ of all elementary symmetric polynomials in $n$ variables is a minimal generating set for the algebra of symmetric polynomials in $n$ variables, but over a finite field ${\mathbb F}_q$ the set $S(n)$ is not a minimal separating set for symmetric polynomials in general. We determined when $S(n)$ is a minimal separating set for the algebra of symmetric polynomials having the least possible number of elements.
Graph Polynomials for the Numbers of Independent Sets and Bipartite Cuts for Undirected Graphs
The graph polynomial for the number of independent sets of size $k$ in a general undirected graph is shown to be equal to an elementary symmetric polynomial of the vertex monomials, which are determined by the edges incident at the vertices. The edge variables that comprise the vertex monomials are shown to be nilpotent of degree two. The index of nilpotency of the algebra generated by the graph's vertex monomials is the order of a maximum independent set of the graph. Graph polynomials for the number of cliques and vertex covers are derived from the graph polynomial for independent sets. The graph polynomial for the number of bipartite cuts is given as a coefficient of a multivariate Laurent polynomial.

We prove a new signed elementary symmetric function expansion of the chromatic quasisymmetric function of any natural unit interval graph. We then use a sign-reversing involution to prove a new combinatorial formula for K-chains, which are graphs formed by joining cliques at single vertices. This formula immediately implies $e$-positivity and $e$-unimodality for K-chains. We also prove a version of our signed $e$-expansion for arbitrary graphs.

The number of linear independent algebraic relations among elementary symmetric polynomial functions over finite fields is computed. An algorithm able to find all such relations is described. It is proved that the basis of the ideal of algebraic relations found by the algorithm consists of polynomials having coefficients in the prime field F_p.

Newton's identities provide a way to express elementary symmetric polynomials in terms of power polynomials over fields of characteristic zero. In this article, we study the failure of this relation in positive characteristic and what can be recovered. In particular, we show how one can write the elementary symmetric polynomials as rational functions in the power polynomials over any commutative unital ring.
An Extension of Stanley's Symmetric Acyclicity Theorem to Signed Graphs
In 1995, Richard Stanley introduced the chromatic symmetric function $X_G$ of a graph $G$ and proved that, when written in terms of the elementary symmetric functions, it reveals the number of acyclic orientations of $G$ with a given number of sinks. In this paper, we generalize this result to signed graphs, that is, to graphs whose edges are labeled with $+$ or $-$ and whose colorings and orientations can interact with their signs. Additionally, we introduce a non-homogeneous basis which detects the number of sinks and which not only gives a Stanley-type result for signed graphs but gives an analogous result of this form for unsigned graphs as well.
A new formula for intersection numbers
We propose a new formula to compute Witten--Kontsevich intersection numbers. It is a closed formula, not involving recursion neither solving equations. It only involves sums over partitions of products of factorials, double factorials and Kostka numbers (numbers of semi-standard tableau of given shape and weight) with bounded weights. As an application, we prove a conjecture of [ELO21] stating that the generating polynomials of the intersection numbers expressed in the basis of elementary symmetric polynomials have an unexpected vanishing of their coefficients.
