Symmetric polynomials over finite fields
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is shown that two vectors with coordinates in the finite $q$-element field of characteristic $p$ belong to the same orbit under the natural action of the symmetric group if each of the elementary symmetric polynomials of degree $p^k,2p^k,\dots,(q-1)p^k$, $k=0,1,2,\dots$ has the same value on them. This separating set of polynomial invariants for the natural permutation representation of the symmetric group is not far from being minimal when $q=p$ and the dimension is large compared to $p$. A relatively small separating set of multisymmetric polynomials over the field of $q$ elements is derived.

On distinguishing digraphs by its quasisymmetric B-polynomial
The $B$-polynomial defined by J. Awan and O. Bernardi is a generalization of Tutte Polynomial to digraphs. In this paper, we solve an open question raised by J. Awan and O. Bernardi regarding the expansion of $B$-polynomial in elementary symmetric polynomials. We show that the quasisymmetric generalization of the $B$-polynomial distinguishes a class of oriented proper caterpillars and the class of oriented paths. We present a recurrence relation for the quasisymmetric $B$-polynomial involving the deletion of a source or a sink. As a consequence, we prove that a class of digraph $\mathcal{D}$ is distinguishable if and only if the class $\mathcal{D}^{\vee}$ obtained by taking directed join of $K_1$ with each digraph in $\mathcal{D}$ is distinguishable, which concludes that the digraph analogue of Stanley's Tree conjecture holds for a large class of acyclic digraphs. We further study the symmetric properties of the quasisymmetric $B$-polynomial and its relation with certain digraphs.

Wreath Macdonald operators

We construct a novel family of difference-permutation operators and prove that they are diagonalized by the wreath Macdonald $P$-polynomials; the eigenvalues are written in terms of elementary symmetric polynomials of arbitrary degree. Our operators arise from integral formulas for the action of the horizontal Heisenberg subalgebra in the vertex representation of the corresponding quantum toroidal algebra

The $e$-positivity of the chromatic symmetric functions and the inverse Kostka matrix
We expand the chromatic symmetric functions for Dyck paths of bounce number three in the elementary symmetric function basis using a combinatorial interpretation of the inverse of the Kostka matrix studied in Eğecioğlu-Remmel (1990). We prove that certain coefficients in this expansion are positive. We establish the $e$-positivity of an extended class of chromatic symmetric functions for Dyck paths of bounce number three beyond the "hook-shape" case of Cho-Huh (2019).

e-basis Coefficients of Chromatic Symmetric Functions
A well-known result of Stanley's shows that given a graph $G$ with chromatic symmetric function expanded into the basis of elementary symmetric functions as $X_G = \sum c_λe_λ$, the sum of the coefficients $c_λ$ for $λ$ with $λ_1' = k$ (equivalently those $λ$ with exactly $k$ parts) is equal to the number of acyclic orientations of $G$ with exactly $k$ sinks. However, more is known. The sink sequence of an acyclic orientation of $G$ is a tuple $(s_1,\dots,s_k)$ such that $s_1$ is the number of sinks of the orientation, and recursively each $s_i$ with $i > 1$ is the number of sinks remaining after deleting the sinks contributing to $s_1,\dots,s_{i-1}$. Equivalently, the sink sequence gives the number of vertices at each level of the poset induced by the acyclic orientation. A lesser-known follow-up result of Stanley's determines certain cases in which we can find a sum of $e$-basis coefficients that gives the number of acyclic orientations of $G$ with a given partial sink sequence. Of interest in its own right, this result also admits as a corollary a simple proof of the $e$-positivity of $X_G$ when the stability number of $G$ is $2$. In this paper, we prove a vertex-weighted generalization of this follow-up result, and conjecture a stronger version that admits a similar combinatorial interpretation for a much larger set of $e$-coefficient sums of chromatic symmetric functions. In particular, the conjectured formula would give a combinatorial interpretation for the sum of the coefficients $c_λ$ with prescribed values of $λ_1'$ and $λ_2'$ for any unweighted claw-free graph (not necessarily an incomparability graph, as in the setting of the Stanley-Stembridge conjecture).
3-Plethysms of homogeneous and elementary symmetric functions
We introduce the new combinatorial approach of plethystic type of tableaux, as a method to understand coefficients of Schur functions appearing in plethysms $s_ν[h_λ]$ and $s_ν[e_λ]$, for any partitions $λ$ and $ν$. We first give general results about this approach, then use results on tableaux, ribbon tableaux and integer points in polytopes to understand the case where $ν$ is a partition of $3$ and $λ$ has one part. We then use a \textit{Kronecker map} to extend these results to any partition $λ$.

The symmetric function theorem via the Faà di Bruno formula
Published • View PublicationBIB
The symmetric function theorem states that a polynomial that is invariant under permutation of variables, is a polynomial in the elementary symmetric polynomials. We deduce this classical result, in the analytic setting, from the multivariate Faà di Bruno formula. In two variables, this allows us to completely determine all coefficients that occur in the inductive equations.

q-Stirling numbers in type B
Stirling numbers, which count partitions of a set and permutations in the symmetric group, have found extensive application in combinatorics, geometry, and algebra. We study analogues and q-analogues of these numbers corresponding to the Coxeter group of type B. In particular, we show how they are related to complete homogeneous and elementary symmetric polynomials; demonstrate how they q-count signed partitions and permutations; compute their ordinary, exponential, and q-exponential generating functions; and prove various identities about them. Ordered analogues of the q-Stirling numbers of the second kind have recently appeared in conjectures of Zabrocki and of Swanson--Wallach concerning the Hilbert series of certain super coinvariant algebras. We provide conjectural bases for these algebras and show that they have the correct Hilbert series.

Representation theoretic interpretation and interpolation properties of inhomogeneous spin $q$-Whittaker polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We establish new properties of inhomogeneous spin $q$-Whittaker polynomials, which are symmetric polynomials generalizing $t=0$ Macdonald polynomials. We show that these polynomials are defined in terms of a vertex model, whose weights come not from an $R$-matrix, as is often the case, but from other intertwining operators of $U'_q(\hat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$-modules. Using this construction, we are able to prove a Cauchy-type identity for inhomogeneous spin $q$-Whittaker polynomials in full generality. Moreover, we are able to characterize spin $q$-Whittaker polynomials in terms of vanishing at certain points, and we find interpolation analogues of $q$-Whittaker and elementary symmetric polynomials.

Delta and Theta Operator Expansions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give an elementary symmetric function expansion for $MΔ_{m_γe_1}Πe_λ^{\ast}$ and $MΔ_{m_γe_1}Πs_λ^{\ast}$ when $t=1$ in terms of what we call $γ$-parking functions and lattice $γ$-parking functions. Here, $Δ_F$ and $Π$ are certain eigenoperators of the modified Macdonald basis and $M=(1-q)(1-t)$. Our main results in turn give an elementary basis expansion at $t=1$ for symmetric functions of the form $M Δ_{Fe_1} Θ_{G} J$ whenever $F$ is expanded in terms of monomials, $G$ is expanded in terms of the elementary basis, and $J$ is expanded in terms of the modified elementary basis $\{Πe_λ^\ast\}_λ$. Even the most special cases of this general Delta and Theta operator expression are significant; we highlight a few of these special cases. We end by giving an $e$-positivity conjecture for when $t$ is not specialized, proposing that our objects can also give the elementary basis expansion in the unspecialized symmetric function.
Splitting the square of homogeneous and elementary functions into their symmetric and anti-symmetric parts
We consider the expansion of the square of a complete homogeneous function $h_λ$, or of an elementary symmetric function $e_λ$, in the basis of Schur functions. This square also decomposes into two plethysms, $s_2[h_λ]$ and $s_{11}[h_λ]$ (resp. $s_2[h_λ]$ and $s_{11}[h_λ]$), which are called its symmetric and anti-symmetric parts, respectively. We define a sign statistic on the set of tableaux that index the Schur functions appearing in the square of those symmetric functions. This sign statistic allows to determine to which plethysm each Schur function contributes. We use mainly combinatorial tools on tableaux (product on tableau and RSK) and basic manipulations on plethysm and symmetric functions.

On Vandermonde determinants via $n$-determinants
We use earlier defined notion of $n$- determinant to investigate sub-determinants of an extended Vandermonde matrix. Firstly, we demonstrate our method on a number of particular cases. Then we prove that all these results may be stated in terms of Schur's polynomials. In our main result, we prove that Schur polynomials are equal to minors of a fixed matrix, which entries are formed of elementary symmetric polynomials. Such a formula is known as the second Jaccobi-Trudi identity.
Crystal invariant theory I: Geometric RSK
Published • View PublicationBIB
Berenstein and Kazhdan's theory of geometric crystals gives rise to two commuting families of geometric crystal operators acting on the space of complex $m \times n$ matrices. These are birational actions, which we view as a crystal-theoretic analogue of the usual action of ${\rm SL}_m \times {\rm SL}_n$ on $m \times n$ matrices. We prove that the field of rational invariants (and ring of polynomial invariants) of each family of geometric crystal operators is generated by a set of algebraically independent polynomials, which are generalizations of the elementary symmetric polynomials in $m$ (or $n$) variables. We also give a set of algebraically independent generators for the intersection of these fields, and we explain how these fields are situated inside the larger fields of geometric $R$-matrix invariants, which were studied by Lam and the third-named author under the name loop symmetric functions. The key tool in our proof is the geometric RSK correspondence of Noumi and Yamada, which we show to be an isomorphism of geometric crystals. In an appendix jointly written with Thomas Lam, we prove the fundamental theorem of loop symmetric functions, which says that the polynomial invariants of the geometric $R$-matrix are generated by the loop elementary symmetric functions.
New modular symmetric function and its applications: Modular $s$-Stirling numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we consider a generalization of the Stirling number sequence of both kinds by using a specialization of a new family of symmetric functions. We give combinatorial interpretations for this symmetric functions by means of weighted lattice path and tilings. We also present some new convolutions involving the complete and elementary symmetric functions. Additionally, we introduce different families of set partitions to give combinatorial interpretations for the modular $s$-Stirling numbers.

A natural basis for intersection numbers
We advertise elementary symmetric polynomials $e_i$ as the natural basis for generating series $A_{g,n}$ of intersection numbers of genus g and n marked points. Closed formulae for $A_{g,n}$ are known for genera $0$ and $1$ -- this approach provides formulae for $g = 2,3,4$, together with an algorithm to compute the formula for any g. The claimed naturality of the e_i basis relies in the unexpected vanishing of some coefficients with a clear pattern: we conjecture that $A_{g,n}$ can have at most $g$ factors $e_i$, with $i>1$, in its expansion. This observation promotes a paradigm for more general cohomology classes. As an application of the conjecture, we find new integral representations of $A_{g,n}$, which recover expressions for the Weil-Petersson volumes in terms of Bessel functions.

A Combinatorial Approach to the Groebner Bases for Ideals Generated by Elementary Symmetric Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Previous work by Mora and Sala provides the reduced Groebner basis of the ideal formed by the elementary symmetric polynomials in $n$ variables of degrees $k=1,\dots,n$, $\langle e_{1,n}(x), \dots, e_{n,n}(x) \rangle$. Haglund, Rhoades, and Shimonozo expand upon this, finding the reduced Groebner basis of the ideal of elementary symmetric polynomials in $n$ variables of degree $d$ for $d=n-k+1,\dots,n$ for $k\leq n$. In this paper, we further generalize their findings by using symbolic computation and experimentation to construct the reduced Groebner basis for the ideal generated by the elementary symmetric polynomials in $n$ variables of arbitrary degrees.
Chromatic symmetric functions of Dyck paths and q-rook theory

The chromatic symmetric function (CSF) of Dyck paths of Stanley and its Shareshian-Wachs $q$-analogue have important connections to Hessenberg varieties, diagonal harmonics and LLT polynomials. In the, so called, abelian case they are also curiously related to placements of non-attacking rooks by results of Stanley-Stembridge (1993) and Guay-Paquet (2013). For the $q$-analogue, these results have been generalized by Abreu-Nigro (2020) and Guay-Paquet (private communication), using $q$-hit numbers. Among our main results is a new proof of Guay-Paquet's elegant identity expressing the $q$-CSFs in a CSF basis with $q$-hit coefficients. We further show its equivalence to the Abreu-Nigro identity expanding the $q$-CSF in the elementary symmetric functions. In the course of our work we establish that the $q$-hit numbers in these expansions differ from the originally assumed Garsia-Remmel $q$-hit numbers by certain powers of $q$. We prove new identities for these $q$-hit numbers, and establish connections between the three different variants.
Determinantal Formulas for SEM Expansions of Schubert Polynomials

We show that for any permutation $w$ that avoids a certain set of 13 patterns of lengths 5 and 6, the Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak S_w$ can be expressed as the determinant of a matrix of elementary symmetric polynomials in a manner similar to the Jacobi-Trudi identity. For such $w$, this determinantal formula is equivalent to a (signed) subtraction-free expansion of $\mathfrak S_w$ in the basis of standard elementary monomials.
A proof of the Extended Delta Conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove the Extended Delta Conjecture of Haglund, Remmel, and Wilson, a combinatorial formula for $Δ_{h_l}Δ' _{e_k} e_{n}$, where $Δ' _{e_k}$ and $Δ_{h_l}$ are Macdonald eigenoperators and $e_n$ is an elementary symmetric function. We actually prove a stronger identity of infinite series of $GL_m$ characters expressed in terms of LLT series. This is achieved through new results in the theory of the Schiffmann algebra and its action on the algebra of symmetric functions.
Chromatic symmetric functions of Dyck paths and q-rook theory (extended abstract)
The chromatic symmetric function (CSF) of Dyck paths of Stanley and its Shareshian-Wachs $q$-analogue have important connections to Hessenberg varieties, diagonal harmonics, and LLT polynomials. For the $q$-analogue, these results have been generalized by Abreu-Nigro (2020) and Guay-Paquet (private communication), using $q$-hit numbers, which are a variant of the ones introduced by Garsia and Remmel.
