We introduce $H$-chromatic symmetric functions, $X_{G}^{H}$, which use the $H$-coloring of a graph $G$ to define a generalization of Stanley's chromatic symmetric functions. We say two graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$ are $H$-chromatically equivalent if $X_{G_1}^{H} = X_{G_2}^{H}$, and use this idea to study uniqueness results for $H$-chromatic symmetric functions, with a particular emphasis on the case $H$ is a complete bipartite graph. We also show that several of the classical bases of the space of symmetric functions, i.e. the monomial symmetric functions, power sum symmetric functions, and elementary symmetric functions, can be realized as $H$-chromatic symmetric functions. We end with some conjectures and open problems.
Hilbert series of typical representations for Lie superalgebras
Let g be a basic classical Lie superalgebra over C. In the case of a typical weight whose every nonnegative integer multiple is also typical, we compute a closed form for the Hilbert series whose coefficients encode the dimensions of finite-dimensional irreducible typical g-representations. We give a formula for this Hilbert series in terms of elementary symmetric polynomials and Eulerian polynomials. Additionally, we show a simple closed form in terms of differential operators.

In the vector space of symmetric functions, the elements of the basis of elementary symmetric functions are (up to a factor) the chromatic symmetric functions of disjoint unions of cliques. We consider their graph complements, the functions $\{r_λ: λ\text{ an integer partition}\}$ defined as chromatic symmetric functions of complete multipartite graphs. This basis was first introduced by Penaguiao [21]. We provide a combinatorial interpretation for the coefficients of the change-of-basis formula between the $r_λ$ and the monomial symmetric functions, and we show that the coefficients of the chromatic and Tutte symmetric functions of a graph $G$ when expanded in the $r$-basis enumerate certain intersections of partitions of $V(G)$ into stable sets.

We prove that for any tree with a vertex of degree at least six, its chromatic symmetric function is not $e$-positive, that is, it cannot be written as a nonnegative linear combination of elementary symmetric functions. This makes significant progress towards a recent conjecture of Dahlberg, She, and van Willigenburg, who conjectured the result for all trees with a vertex of degree at least four. We also provide a series of conditions that can identify when the chromatic symmetric function of a spider, a tree consisting of multiple paths identified at an end, is not $e$-positive. These conditions also generalize to trees and graphs with cut vertices. Finally, by applying a result of Orellana and Scott, we provide a method to inductively calculate certain coefficients in the elementary symmetric function expansion of the chromatic symmetric function of a spider, leading to further $e$-positivity conditions for spiders.

The polynomial relationship between elementary symmetric functions (Cauchy enumeration formula) is formulated via a ``raising operator" and Fock space construction. A simple graphical proof of this relation is proposed. The new operator extends the Heisenberg algebra so that the number operator becomes a Lie product. This study is motivated by natural appearance of these polynomials in the theory of invariants for Lax equations and in classical and topological field theories.

Hypergeometric functions and zonal polynomials are the tools usually addressed in the literature to deal with the expected value of the elementary symmetric functions in non-central Wishart latent roots. The method here proposed recovers the expected value of these symmetric functions by using the umbral operator applied to the trace of suitable polynomial matrices and their cumulants. The employment of a suitable linear operator in place of hypergeometric functions and zonal polynomials was conjectured by de Waal in 1972. Here we show how the umbral operator accomplishes this task and consequently represents an alternative tool to deal with these symmetric functions. When special formal variables are plugged in the variables, the evaluation through the umbral operator deletes all the monomials in the latent roots except those contributing in the elementary symmetric functions. Cumulants further simplify the computations taking advantage of the convolution structure of the polynomial trace. Open problems are addressed at the end of the paper.
The Gini Index of an Integer Partition

The Gini index is a number that attempts to measure how equitably a resource is distributed throughout a population, and is commonly used in economics as a measurement of inequality of wealth or income. The Gini index is often defined as the area between the Lorenz curve of a distribution and the line of equality, normalized to be between zero and one. In this fashion, we define a Gini index on the set of integer partitions and show that it is closely related to the second elementary symmetric polynomial, and the dominance order on partitions. We conclude with a generating function for the Gini index, and discuss how it can be used to find lower bounds on the width of the dominance lattice.
A generalization of complete and elementary symmetric functions
In this paper, we consider the generating functions of the complete and elementary symmetric functions and provide a new generalization of these classical symmetric functions. Some classical relationships involving the complete and elementary symmetric functions are reformulated in a more general context. Combinatorial interpretations of these generalized symmetric functions are also introduced.

We give a new characterization of the vertical-strip LLT polynomials $\mathrm{LLT}_P(x;q)$ as the unique family of symmetric functions that satisfy certain combinatorial relations. This characterization is then used to prove an explicit combinatorial expansion of vertical-strip LLT polynomials in terms of elementary symmetric functions. Such formulas were conjectured independently by A. Garsia et al. and the first named author, and are governed by the combinatorics of orientations of unit-interval graphs. The obtained expansion is manifestly positive if $q$ is replaced by $q+1$, thus recovering a recent result of M. D'Adderio. Our results are based on linear relations among LLT polynomials that arise in the work of D'Adderio, and of E. Carlsson and A. Mellit. To some extent these relations are given new bijective proofs using colorings of unit-interval graphs. As a bonus we obtain a new characterization of chromatic quasisymmetric functions of unit-interval graphs.

Extending the elementary and complete homogeneous symmetric functions, we introduce the truncated homogeneous symmetric function $h_λ^{\dd}$ in $(\ref{THSF})$ for any integer partition $λ$, and show that the transition matrix from $h_λ^{\dd}$ to the power sum symmetric functions $p_λ$ is given by \[M(h^{\dd},p)=M'(p,m)z^{-1}D^{\dd},\] where $D^{\dd}$ and $z$ are nonsingular diagonal matrices. Consequently, $\{h_λ^{\dd}\}$ forms a basis of the ring $Λ$ of symmetric functions. In addition, we show that the generating function $H^{\dd}(t)=\ssum_{n\ge 0}h_n^{\dd}(x)t^n$ satisfies \[ω(H^{\dd}(t))=\left(H^{\dd}(-t)\right)^{-1},\] where $ω$ is the involution of $Λ$ sending each elementary symmetric function $e_λ$ to the complete homogeneous symmetric function $h_λ$.

Given a symmetric polynomial $P$ in $2n$ variables, there exists a unique symmetric polynomial $Q$ in $n$ variables such that \[ P(x_1,\ldots,x_n,x_1^{-1},\ldots,x_n^{-1}) =Q(x_1+x_1^{-1},\ldots,x_n+x_n^{-1}). \] We denote this polynomial $Q$ by $Φ_n(P)$ and show that $Φ_n$ is an epimorphism of algebras. We compute $Φ_n(P)$ for several families of symmetric polynomials $P$: symplectic and orthogonal Schur polynomials, elementary symmetric polynomials, complete homogeneous polynomials, and power sums. Some of these formulas were already found by Elouafi (2014) and Lachaud (2016).
The polynomials of the form $Φ_n(\operatorname{s}_{λ/μ}^{(2n)})$, where $\operatorname{s}_{λ/μ}^{(2n)}$ is a skew Schur polynomial in $2n$ variables, arise naturally in the study of the minors of symmetric banded Toeplitz matrices, when the generating symbol is a palindromic Laurent polynomial, and its roots can be written as $x_1,\ldots,x_n,x^{-1}_1,\ldots,x^{-1}_n$. Trench (1987) and Elouafi (2014) found efficient formulas for the determinants of symmetric banded Toeplitz matrices. We show that these formulas are equivalent to the result of Ciucu and Krattenthaler (2009) about the factorization of the characters of classical groups.

We define the acyclic orientation polynomial of a graph to be the generating function for the sinks of its acyclic orientations. Stanley proved that the number of acyclic orientations is equal to the chromatic polynomial evaluated at $-1$ up to sign. Motivated by this link between acyclic orientations and the chromatic polynomial, we develop "acyclic orientation" analogues of theorems concerning the chromatic polynomial of Birkhoff, Whitney, and Greene-Zaslavsky. As an application, we provide a new proof for Stanley's sink theorem for chromatic symmetric functions $X_G$. This theorem gives a relation between the number of acyclic orientations with a fixed number of sinks and the coefficients in the expansion of $X_G$ with respect to elementary symmetric functions.

That is, we show that the chromatic symmetric function of the incomparability graph of a unit interval order in which the length of a chain is at most 3 is positively expanded as a linear sum of elementary symmetric functions.

In this article we establish the asymptotic behavior of generating functions related to the exponential sum over finite fields of elementary symmetric functions and their perturbations. This asymptotic behavior allows us to calculate the probability generating function of the probability that the the elementary symmetric polynomial of degree $k$ and its perturbations returns $β\in \mathbb{F}_q$ where $\mathbb{F}_q$ represents the field of $q$ elements. Our study extends many of the results known for perturbations over the binary field to any finite field. In particular, we establish when a particular perturbation is asymptotically balanced over a prime field and provide a construction to find such perturbations over any finite field.

Let $\mathfrak g$ be a Borcherds algebra with the associated graph $G$. We prove that the chromatic symmetric function of $G$ can be recovered from the Weyl denominator identity of $\mathfrak g$ and this gives a Lie theoretic proof of Stanley's expression for chromatic symmetric function in terms of power sum symmetric function. Also, this gives an expression for chromatic symmetric function of $G$ in terms of root multiplicities of $\lie g$. The absolute value of the linear coefficient of the chromatic polynomial of $G$ is known as the chromatic discriminant of $G$. As an application of our main theorem, we prove that graphs with different chromatic discriminants are distinguished by their chromatic symmetric functions. Also, we find a connection between the Weyl denominators and the $G$-elementary symmetric functions. Using this connection, we give a Lie theoretic proof of non-negativity of coefficients of $G$-power sum symmetric functions.

Complete monotonicity is a strong positivity property for real-valued functions on convex cones. It is certified by the kernel of the inverse Laplace transform. We study this for negative powers of hyperbolic polynomials. Here the certificate is the Riesz kernel in Garding's integral representation. The Riesz kernel is a hypergeometric function in the coefficients of the given polynomial. For monomials in linear forms, it is a Gel'fand-Aomoto hypergeometric function, related to volumes of polytopes. We establish complete monotonicity for sufficiently negative powers of elementary symmetric functions. We also show that small negative powers of these polynomials are not completely monotone, proving one direction of a conjecture by Scott and Sokal.
Some implications of a conjecture of Zabrocki to the action of $S_{n}$ on polynomial differential forms
The symmetric group acts on polynomial differential forms on $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ through its action by permuting the coordinates. In this paper the $S_{n}% $-invariants are shown to be freely generated by the elementary symmetric polynomials and their exterior derivatives. A basis of the alternants in the quotient of the ideal generated by the homogeneous invariants of positive degree is given. In addition, the highest bigraded degrees are given for the quotient. All of these results are consistent with predictions derived by Garsia and Romero from a recent conjecture of Zabrocki.
Chromatic symmetric functions in noncommuting variables revisited
In 1995 Stanley introduced a generalization of the chromatic polynomial of a graph $G$, called the chromatic symmetric function, $X_G$, which was generalized to noncommuting variables, $Y_G$, by Gebhard-Sagan in 2001. Recently there has been a renaissance in the study of $X_G$, in particular in classifying when $X_G$ is a positive linear combination of elementary symmetric or Schur functions.
We extend this study from $X_G$ to $Y_G$, including establishing the multiplicativity of $Y_G$, and showing $Y_G$ satisfies the $k$-deletion property. Moreover, we completely classify when $Y_G$ is a positive linear combination of elementary symmetric functions in noncommuting variables, and similarly for Schur functions in noncommuting variables, in the sense of Bergeron-Hohlweg-Rosas-Zabrocki. We further establish the natural multiplicative generalization of the fundamental theorem of symmetric functions, now in noncommuting variables, and obtain numerous new bases for this algebra whose generators are chromatic symmetric functions in noncommuting variables. Finally, we show that of all known symmetric functions in noncommuting variables, only all elementary and specified Schur ones can be realized as $Y_G$ for some $G$.

We conjecture an explicit positive combinatorial formula for the expansion of unicellular LLT polynomials in the elementary symmetric basis. This is an analogue of the Shareshian-Wachs conjecture and previously studied by Panova and the author in 2018. We show that the conjecture for unicellular LLT polynomials implies a similar formula for vertical-strip LLT polynomials.
We prove positivity in the elementary basis in for the class of graphs called `melting lollipops' previously considered by Huh, Nam and Yoo. This is done by proving a curious relationship between a generalization of charge and orientations of unit-interval graphs.
We also provide short bijective proofs of Lee's three-term recurrences for unicellular LLT polynomials and we show that these recurrences are enough to generate all unicellular LLT polynomials associated with abelian area sequences.
Generalized semimodularity: order statistics
A notion of generalized $n$-semimodularity is introduced, which extends that of (sub/super)mod\-ularity in four ways at once. The main result of this paper, stating that every generalized $(n\colon\!2)$-semimodular function on the $n$th Cartesian power of a distributive lattice is generalized $n$-semimodular, may be considered a multi/infinite-dimensional analogue of the well-known Muirhead lemma in the theory of Schur majorization. This result is also similar to a discretized version of the well-known theorem due to Lorentz, which latter was given only for additive-type functions. Illustrations of our main result are presented for counts of combinations of faces of a polytope; one-sided potentials; multiadditive forms, including multilinear ones -- in particular, permanents of rectangular matrices and elementary symmetric functions; and association inequalities for order statistics. Based on an extension of the FKG inequality due to Rinott \& Saks and Aharoni \& Keich, applications to correlation inequalities for order statistics are given as well.
