Let $\A$ be an irreducible Coxeter arrangement and $W$ be its Coxeter group. Then $W$ naturally acts on $\A$. A multiplicity $\bfm : \A\rightarrow \Z$ is said to be equivariant when $\bfm$ is constant on each $W$-orbit of $\A$. In this article, we prove that the multi-derivation module $D(\A, \bfm)$ is a free module whenever $\bfm$ is equivariant by explicitly constructing a basis, which generalizes the main theorem of \cite{T02}. The main tool is a primitive derivation and its covariant derivative. Moreover, we show that the $W$-invariant part $D(\A, \bfm)^{W}$ for any multiplicity $\bfm$ is a free module over the $W$-invariant subring.
Warmth and mobility of random graphs
A graph homomorphism from the rooted $d$-branching tree $φ: T^d \to H$ is said to be cold if the values of $φ$ for vertices arbitrarily far away from the root can restrict the value of $φ$ at the root. Warmth is a graph parameter that measures the non-existence of cold maps. We study warmth of random graphs $G(n,p)$, and for every $d \ge 1$, we exhibit a nearly-sharp threshold for the existence of cold maps. As a corollary, for $p=O(n^{-α})$ warmth of $G(n,p)$ is concentrated on at most two values. As another corollary, a conjecture of Lovász relating mobility to chromatic number holds for "almost all" graphs. Finally, our results suggest new conjectures relating graph parameters from statistical physics with graph parameters from equivariant topology.

Let $Δ\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ be an $n$-dimensional integral Delzant polytope. It is well-known that there exist the $n$-dimensional compact toric manifold $X_Δ$ and the very ample $(\mathbb{C}^\times)^n$-equivariant line bundle $L_Δ$ on $X_Δ$ associated with $Δ$. In the present paper, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for Chow semistability of $(X_Δ,L_Δ^i)$ for a maximal torus action. We then see that asymptotic (relative) Chow semistability implies (relative) K-semistability for toric degenerations, which is proved by Ross and Thomas, without any knowledge of Riemann-Roch theorem and test configurations.
Puzzles, positroid varieties, and equivariant K-theory of Grassmannians
Vakil studied the intersection theory of Schubert varieties in the Grassmannian in a very direct way: he degenerated the intersection of a Schubert variety X_mu and opposite Schubert variety X^nu to a union {X^lambda}, with repetition. This degeneration proceeds in stages, and along the way he met a collection of more complicated subvarieties, which he identified as the closures of certain locally closed sets.
We show that Vakil's varieties are _positroid varieties_, which in particular shows they are normal, Cohen-Macaulay, have rational singularities, and are defined by the vanishing of Plücker coordinates [Knutson-Lam-Speyer]. We determine the equations of the Vakil variety associated to a partially filled ``puzzle'' (building on the appendix to [Vakil]), and extend Vakil's proof to give a geometric proof of the puzzle rule from [Knutson-Tao '03] for equivariant Schubert calculus.
The recent paper [Anderson-Griffeth-Miller] establishes (abstractly; without a formula) three positivity results in equivariant K-theory of flag manifolds G/P. We demonstrate one of these concretely, giving a corresponding puzzle rule.

In this paper, we study Hamiltonian R-actions on symplectic orbifolds [M/S], where R and S are tori. We prove an injectivity theorem and generalize Tolman-Weitsman's proof of the GKM theorem in this setting. The main example is the symplectic reduction X//S of a Hamiltonian T-manifold X by a subtorus S of T. This includes the class of symplectic toric orbifolds. We define the equivariant Chen-Ruan cohomology ring and use the above results to establish a combinatorial method of computing this equivariant Chen-Ruan cohomology in terms of orbifold fixed point data.

Associated with the Davis-Januszkiewicz theory of small covers, this paper deals with the theory of 2-torus manifolds from the viewpoint of equivariant bordism. We define a differential operator on the "dual" algebra of the unoriented $G_n$-representation algebra introduced by Conner and Floyd, where $G_n=(\Z_2)^n$. With the help of $G_n$-colored graphs (or mod 2 GKM graphs), we may use this differential operator to give a very simple description of tom Dieck-Kosniowski-Stong localization theorem in the setting of 2-torus manifolds. We then apply this to study the $G_n$-equivariant unoriented bordism classification of $n$-dimensional 2-torus manifolds. We show that the $G_n$-equivariant unoriented bordism class of each $n$-dimensional 2-torus manifold contains an $n$-dimensional small cover as its representative, solving the conjecture posed in [19]. In addition, we also obtain that the graded noncommutative ring formed by the equivariant unoriented bordism classes of 2-torus manifolds of all possible dimensions is generated by the classes of all generalized real Bott manifolds (as special small covers over the products of simplices). This gives a strong connection between the computation of $G_n$-equivariant bordism groups or ring and the Davis-Januszkiewicz theory of small covers. As a computational application, with the help of computer, we completely determine the structure of the group formed by equivariant bordism classes of all 4-dimensional 2-torus manifolds. Finally, we give some essential relationships among 2-torus manifolds, coloring polynomials, colored simple convex polytopes, colored graphs.

This paper has three main goals. First, we set up a general framework to address the problem of constructing module bases for the equivariant cohomology of certain subspaces of GKM spaces. To this end we introduce the notion of a GKM-compatible subspace of an ambient GKM space. We also discuss poset-upper-triangularity, a key combinatorial notion in both GKM theory and more generally in localization theory in equivariant cohomology. With a view toward other applications, we present parts of our setup in a general algebraic and combinatorial framework. Second, motivated by our central problem of building module bases, we introduce a combinatorial game which we dub poset pinball and illustrate with several examples. Finally, as first applications, we apply the perspective of GKM-compatible subspaces and poset pinball to construct explicit and computationally convenient module bases for the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology of all Peterson varieties of classical Lie type, and subregular Springer varieties of Lie type $A$. In addition, in the Springer case we use our module basis to lift the classical Springer representation on the ordinary cohomology of subregular Springer varieties to $S^1$-equivariant cohomology in Lie type $A$.
New Techniques for obtaining Schubert-type formulas for Hamiltonian manifolds

In [GT], Goldin and the second author extend some ideas from Schubert calculus to the more general setting of Hamiltonian torus actions on compact symplectic manifolds with isolated fixed points. (See also [Kn99] and [Kn08].) The main goal of this paper is to build on this work by finding more effective formulas. More explicitly, given a generic component of the moment map, they define a canonical class $α_p$ in the equivariant cohomology of the manifold $M$ for each fixed point $p \in M$. When they exist, canonical classes form a natural basis of the equivariant cohomology of $M$. In particular, when $M$ is a flag variety, these classes are the equivariant Schubert classes. It is a long standing problem in combinatorics to find positive integral formulas for the equivariant structure constants associated to this basis. Since computing the restriction of the canonical classes to the fixed points determines these structure constants, it is important to find effective formulas for these restrictions. In this paper, we introduce new techniques for calculating the restrictions of a canonical class $α_p$ to a fixed point $q$. Our formulas are nearly always simpler, in the sense that they count the contributions over fewer paths. Moreover, our formula is manifestly positive and integral in certain important special cases.
Embedding types and canonical affine maps between Bruhat-Tits buildings of classical groups (Thesis)
P. Broussous and S. Stevens studied maps between enlarged Bruhat-Tits buildings to construct types for p-adic unitary groups. They needed maps which respect the Moy-Prasad filtrations. That property is called (CLF), i.e. compatibility with the Lie algebra filtrations. In the first part of this thesis we generalise their results on such maps to the Quaternion-algebra case. Let k0 be a p-adic field of residue characteristic not two. We consider a semisimple k0-rational Lie algebra element beta of a unitary group G:=U(h) defined over k0 with a signed hermitian form h. Let H be the centraliser of beta in G. We prove the existence of an affine H(k0)-equivariant CLF-map j from the enlarged Bruhat-Tits building B^1(H,k0) to B^1(G,k0). As conjectured by Broussous the CLF-property determines j, if none of the factors of H is k0-isomorphic to the isotropic orthogonal group of k0-rank one and all factors are unitary groups. Under the weaker assumption that the affine CLF-map j is only equivariant under the center of H^0(k0) it is uniquely determined up to a translation of B^1(H,k0). The second part is devoted to the decoding of embedding types by the geometry of a CLF-map. Embedding types have been studied by Broussous and M. Grabitz. We consider a division algebra D of finite index with a p-adic center F. The construction of simple types for GLn(D) in the Budhnell-Kutzko framework required an investigation of strata which had to fulfil a rigidity property. Giving a stratum especially means to fix a pair (E,a) consisting of a field extension E|F in Mn(D) and a hereditary order a which is stable under conjugation by E^x, in other words we fix an embedding of E^x into the normalizer of a. Broussous and Grabitz classified these pairs with invariants. We describe and prove a way to decode these invariants using the geometry of a CLF-map.

To every matroid, we associate a class in the K-theory of the Grassmannian. We study this class using the method of equivariant localization. In particular, we provide a geometric interpretation of the Tutte polynomial. We also extend results of the second author concerning the behavior of such classes under direct sum, series and parallel connection and two-sum; these results were previously only established for realizable matroids, and their earlier proofs were more difficult.

Motivated by representation theory and geometry, we introduce and develop an equivariant generalization of Ehrhart theory, the study of lattice points in dilations of lattice polytopes. We prove representation-theoretic analogues of numerous classical results, and give applications to the Ehrhart theory of rational polytopes and centrally symmetric polytopes. We also recover a character formula of Procesi, Dolgachev, Lunts and Stembridge for the action of a Weyl group on the cohomology of a toric variety associated to a root system.
The equivariant topology of stable Kneser graphs

The stable Kneser graph $SG_{n,k}$, $n\ge1$, $k\ge0$, introduced by Schrijver \cite{schrijver}, is a vertex critical graph with chromatic number $k+2$, its vertices are certain subsets of a set of cardinality $m=2n+k$. Björner and de Longueville \cite{anders-mark} have shown that its box complex is homotopy equivalent to a sphere, $\Hom(K_2,SG_{n,k})\homot\Sphere^k$. The dihedral group $D_{2m}$ acts canonically on $SG_{n,k}$, the group $C_2$ with 2 elements acts on $K_2$. We almost determine the $(C_2\times D_{2m})$-homotopy type of $\Hom(K_2,SG_{n,k})$ and use this to prove the following results. The graphs $SG_{2s,4}$ are homotopy test graphs, i.e. for every graph $H$ and $r\ge0$ such that $\Hom(SG_{2s,4},H)$ is $(r-1)$-connected, the chromatic number $χ(H)$ is at least $r+6$. If $k\notin\set{0,1,2,4,8}$ and $n\ge N(k)$ then $SG_{n,k}$ is not a homotopy test graph, i.e.\ there are a graph $G$ and an $r\ge1$ such that $\Hom(SG_{n,k}, G)$ is $(r-1)$-connected and $χ(G)<r+k+2$.
Divided difference operators for partial flag varieties
Divided difference operators are degree-reducing operators on the cohomology of flag varieties that are used to compute algebraic invariants of the ring (for instance, structure constants). We identify divided difference operators on the equivariant cohomology of G/P for arbitrary partial flag varieties of arbitrary Lie type, and show how to use them in the ordinary cohomology of G/P. We provide three applications. The first shows that all Schubert classes of partial flag varieties can be generated from a sequence of divided difference operators on the highest-degree Schubert class. The second is a generalization of Billey's formula for the localizations of equivariant Schubert classes of flag varieties to arbitrary partial flag varieties. The third gives a choice of Schubert polynomials for partial flag varieties as well as an explicit formula for each. We focus on the example of maximal Grassmannians, including Grassmannians of k-planes in a complex n-dimensional vector space.

We prove a "Tverberg type" multiple intersection theorem. It strengthens the prime case of the original Tverberg theorem from 1966, as well as the topological Tverberg theorem of Barany et al. (1980), by adding color constraints. It also provides an improved bound for the (topological) colored Tverberg problem of Barany & Larman (1992) that is tight in the prime case and asymptotically optimal in the general case. The proof is based on relative equivariant obstruction theory.
Singular lines of trilinear forms

We prove that an alternating e-form on a vector space over a quasi-algebraically closed field always has a singular (e-1)-dimensional subspace, provided that the dimension of the space is strictly greater than e. Here an (e-1)-dimensional subspace is called singular if pairing it with the e-form yields zero. By the theorem of Chevalley and Warning our result applies in particular to finite base fields. Our proof is most interesting in the case where e=3 and the space has odd dimension n; then it involves a beautiful equivariant map from alternating trilinear forms to polynomials of degree (n-3)/2. We also give a sharp upper bound on the dimension of subspaces all of whose 2-dimensional subspaces are singular for a non-degenerate trilinear form. In certain binomial dimensions the trilinear forms attaining this upper bound turn out to form a single orbit under the general linear group, and we classify their singular lines.

Consider Bernoulli(1/2) percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, and define a perfect matching between open and closed vertices in a way that is a deterministic equivariant function of the configuration. We want to find such matching rules that make the probability that the pair of the origin is at distance greater than $r$ decay as fast as possible. For two dimensions, we give a matching of decay $cr^{1/2}$, which is optimal. For dimension at least 3 we give a matching rule that has an exponential tail. This substantially improves previous bounds. The construction has two major parts: first we define a sequence of coarser and coarser partitions of $\mathbb{Z}^d$ in an equivariant way, such that with high probability the cell of a fixed point is like a cube, and the labels in it are i.i.d. Then we define a matching for a fixed finite cell, which stabilizes as we repeatedly apply it for the cells of the consecutive partitions. Our methods also work in the case when one wants to match points of two Poisson processes, and they may be applied to allocation questions.
A Gröbner basis for Kazhdan-Lusztig ideals

Kazhdan-Lusztig ideals, a family of generalized determinantal ideals investigated in [Woo-Yong '08], provide an explicit choice of coordinates and equations encoding a neighbourhood of a torus-fixed point of a Schubert variety on a type A flag variety. Our main result is a Grobner basis for these ideals. This provides a single geometric setting to transparently explain the naturality of pipe dreams on the Rothe diagram of a permutation, and their appearance in:
* combinatorial formulas [Fomin-Kirillov '94] for Schubert and Grothendieck polynomials of [Lascoux-Schutzenberger '82];
* the equivariant K-theory specialization formula of [Buch-Rimanyi '04]; and
* a positive combinatorial formula for multiplicities of Schubert varieties in good cases, including those for which the associated Kazhdan-Lusztig ideal is homogeneous under the standard grading.
Our results generalize (with alternate proofs) [Knutson-Miller '05]'s Grobner basis theorem for Schubert determinantal ideals and their geometric interpretation of the monomial positivity of Schubert polynomials. We also complement recent work of [Knutson '08,'09] on degenerations of Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties in general Lie type, as well as work of [Goldin '01] on equivariant localization and of [Lakshmibai-Weyman '90], [Rosenthal-Zelevinsky '01], and [Krattenthaler '01] on Grassmannian multiplicity formulas.
A positive Monk formula in the S^1-equivariant cohomology of type A Peterson varieties

Peterson varieties are a special class of Hessenberg varieties that have been extensively studied e.g. by Peterson, Kostant, and Rietsch, in connection with the quantum cohomology of the flag variety. In this manuscript, we develop a generalized Schubert calculus, and in particular a positive Chevalley-Monk formula, for the ordinary and Borel-equivariant cohomology of the Peterson variety $Y$ in type $A_{n-1}$, with respect to a natural $S^1$-action arising from the standard action of the maximal torus on flag varieties. As far as we know, this is the first example of positive Schubert calculus beyond the realm of Kac-Moody flag varieties $G/P$.
Our main results are as follows. First, we identify a computationally convenient basis of $H^*_{S^1}(Y)$, which we call the basis of Peterson Schubert classes. Second, we derive a manifestly positive, integral Chevalley-Monk formula for the product of a cohomology-degree-2 Peterson Schubert class with an arbitrary Peterson Schubert class. Both $H^*_{S^1}(Y)$ and $H^*(Y)$ are generated in degree 2. Finally, by using our Chevalley-Monk formula we give explicit descriptions (via generators and relations) of both the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology ring $H^*_{S^1}(Y)$ and the ordinary cohomology ring $H^*(Y)$ of the type $A_{n-1}$ Peterson variety. Our methods are both directly from and inspired by those of GKM (Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson) theory and classical Schubert calculus. We discuss several open questions and directions for future work.
Topology of Hom complexes and test graphs for bounding chromatic number

We introduce new methods for understanding the topology of $\Hom$ complexes (spaces of homomorphisms between two graphs), mostly in the context of group actions on graphs and posets. We view $\Hom(T,-)$ and $\Hom(-,G)$ as functors from graphs to posets, and introduce a functor $(-)^1$ from posets to graphs obtained by taking atoms as vertices. Our main structural results establish useful interpretations of the equivariant homotopy type of $\Hom$ complexes in terms of spaces of equivariant poset maps and $Γ$-twisted products of spaces. When $P = F(X)$ is the face poset of a simplicial complex $X$, this provides a useful way to control the topology of $\Hom$ complexes.
Our foremost application of these results is the construction of new families of `test graphs' with arbitrarily large chromatic number - graphs $T$ with the property that the connectivity of $\Hom(T,G)$ provides the best possible lower bound on the chromatic number of $G$. In particular we focus on two infinite families, which we view as higher dimensional analogues of odd cycles. The family of `spherical graphs' have connections to the notion of homomorphism duality, whereas the family of `twisted toroidal graphs' lead us to establish a weakened version of a conjecture (due to Lovász) relating topological lower bounds on chromatic number to maximum degree. Other structural results allow us to show that any finite simplicial complex $X$ with a free action by the symmetric group $S_n$ can be approximated up to $S_n$-homotopy equivalence as $\Hom(K_n,G)$ for some graph $G$; this is a generalization of a result of Csorba. We conclude the paper with some discussion regarding the underlying categorical notions involved in our study.
