Asymptotics of Random Lozenge Tilings via Gelfand-Tsetlin Schemes
Published • View PublicationBIB
A Gelfand-Tsetlin scheme of depth N is a triangular array with m integers at level m, m=1,...,N, subject to certain interlacing constraints. We study the ensemble of uniformly random Gelfand-Tsetlin schemes with arbitrary fixed N-th row. We obtain an explicit double contour integral expression for the determinantal correlation kernel of this ensemble (and also of its q-deformation). This provides new tools for asymptotic analysis of uniformly random lozenge tilings of polygons on the triangular lattice; or, equivalently, of random stepped surfaces. We work with a class of polygons which allows arbitrarily large number of sides. We show that the local limit behavior of random tilings (as all dimensions of the polygon grow) is directed by ergodic translation invariant Gibbs measures. The slopes of these measures coincide with the ones of tangent planes to the corresponding limit shapes described by Kenyon and Okounkov in arXiv:math-ph/0507007. We also prove that at the edge of the limit shape, the asymptotic behavior of random tilings is given by the Airy process. In particular, our results cover the most investigated case of random boxed plane partitions (when the polygon is a hexagon).

The Young bouquet and its boundary
Published in Moscow Mathematical Journal 13 (2013), Issue 2, 193-232 • View PublicationBIB
The classification results for the extreme characters of two basic "big" groups, the infinite symmetric group S(infinity) and the infinite-dimensional unitary group U(infinity), are remarkably similar. It does not seem to be possible to explain this phenomenon using a suitable extension of the Schur-Weyl duality to infinite dimension. We suggest an explanation of a different nature that does not have analogs in the classical representation theory. We start from the combinatorial/probabilistic approach to characters of "big" groups initiated by Vershik and Kerov. In this approach, the space of extreme characters is viewed as a boundary of a certain infinite graph. In the cases of S(infinity) and U(infinity), those are the Young graph and the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph, respectively. We introduce a new related object that we call the Young bouquet. It is a poset with continuous grading whose boundary we define and compute. We show that this boundary is a cone over the boundary of the Young graph, and at the same time it is also a degeneration of the boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph. The Young bouquet has an application to constructing infinite-dimensional Markov processes with determinantal correlation functions.

The boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph: A new approach
Published in Advances in Mathematics 230 (2012), 1738-1779 • View PublicationBIB
The Gelfand-Tsetlin graph is an infinite graded graph that encodes branching of irreducible characters of the unitary groups. The boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph has at least three incarnations --- as a discrete potential theory boundary, as the set of finite indecomposable characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary group, and as the set of doubly infinite totally positive sequences. An old deep result due to Albert Edrei and Dan Voiculescu provides an explicit description of the boundary; it can be realized as a region in an infinite-dimensional coordinate space. The paper contains a novel approach to the Edrei-Voiculescu theorem. It is based on a new explicit formula for the number of semi-standard Young tableaux of a given skew shape (or of Gelfand-Tsetlin schemes of trapezoidal shape). The formula is obtained via the theory of symmetric functions, and new Schur-like symmetric functions play a key role in the derivation.

Sequences of labeled trees related to Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns
Published • View PublicationBIB
By rewriting the famous hook-content formula it easily follows that there are $\prod\limits_{1 \le i < j \le n} \frac{k_j - k_i + j -i}{j-i}$ semistandard tableaux of shape $(k_n,k_{n-1},...,k_1)$ with entries in $\{1,2,...,n\}$ or, equivalently, Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns with bottom row $(k_1,...,k_n)$. In this article we introduce certain sequences of labeled trees, the signed enumeration of which is also given by this formula. In these trees, vertices as well as edges are labeled, the crucial condition being that each edge label lies between the vertex labels of the two endpoints of the edge. This notion enables us to give combinatorial explanations of the shifted antisymmetry of the formula and its polynomiality. Furthermore, we propose to develop an analog approach of combinatorial reasoning for monotone triangles and explain how this may lead to a combinatorial understanding of the alternating sign matrix theorem.

Combinatorial bases for covariant representations of the Lie superalgebra gl(m|n)
Published in Bulletin of the Institute of Mathematics, Academia Sinica 6 (2011), 415-462 • Search Publication
Covariant tensor representations of gl(m|n) occur as irreducible components of tensor powers of the natural (m+n)-dimensional representation. We construct a basis of each covariant representation and give explicit formulas for the action of the generators of gl(m|n) in this basis. The basis has the property that the natural Lie subalgebras gl(m) and gl(n) act by the classical Gelfand-Tsetlin formulas. The main role in the construction is played by the fact that the subspace of gl(m)-highest vectors in any finite-dimensional irreducible representation of gl(m|n) carries a structure of an irreducible module over the Yangian Y(gl(n)). One consequence is a new proof of the character formula for the covariant representations first found by Berele and Regev and by Sergeev.

Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes and Feigin-Fourier-Littelmann polytopes as marked poset polytopes
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 118 (2011), 2454-2462 • View PublicationBIB
Stanley (1986) showed how a finite partially ordered set gives rise to two polytopes, called the order polytope and chain polytope, which have the same Ehrhart polynomial despite being quite different combinatorially. We generalize his result to a wider family of polytopes constructed from a poset P with integers assigned to some of its elements. Through this construction, we explain combinatorially the relationship between the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes (1950) and the Feigin-Fourier-Littelmann polytopes (2010), which arise in the representation theory of the special linear Lie algebra. We then use the generalized Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes of Berenstein and Zelevinsky (1989) to propose conjectural analogues of the Feigin-Fourier-Littelmann polytopes corresponding to the symplectic and odd orthogonal Lie algebras.

Schur dynamics of the Schur processes

We construct discrete time Markov chains that preserve the class of Schur processes on partitions and signatures. One application is a simple exact sampling algorithm for q^{volume}-distributed skew plane partitions with an arbitrary back wall. Another application is a construction of Markov chains on infinite Gelfand-Tsetlin schemes that represent deterministic flows on the space of extreme characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary group.

Symmetric chains, Gelfand-Tsetlin chains, and the Terwilliger algebra of the binary Hamming scheme
Published • View PublicationBIB
The de Bruijn-Tengbergen-Kruyswijk (BTK) construction is a simple algorithm that produces an explicit symmetric chain decomposition of a product of chains. We linearize the BTK algorithm and show that it produces an explicit symmetric Jordan basis (SJB). In the special case of a Boolean algebra the resulting SJB is orthogonal with respect to the standard inner product and, moreover, we can write down an explicit formula for the ratio of the lengths of the successive vectors in these chains (i.e., the singular values). This yields a new, constructive proof of the explicit block diagonalization of the Terwilliger algebra of the binary Hamming scheme. We also give a representation theoretic characterization of this basis that explains its orthogonality, namely, that it is the canonically defined (upto scalars) symmetric Gelfand-Tsetlin basis.
A non-crossing standard monomial theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
The second author has introduced non-crossing tableaux, objects whose non-nesting analogues are semi-standard Young tableaux. We relate non-crossing tableaux to Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns and develop the non-crossing analogue of standard monomial theory. Leclerc and Zelevinsky's weakly separated sets are special cases of non-crossing tableaux, and we suggest that non-crossing tableaux may help illuminate the theory of weakly separated sets.

Disjointness of representations arising in harmonic analysis on the infinite-dimensional unitary group
Published in Funct. Anal. Appl. , 44 (2010), no. 2, 92-105 • View PublicationBIB
We prove pairwise disjointness of representations T_{z,w} of the infinite-dimensional unitary group. These representations provide a natural generalization of the regular representation for the case of "big" group U(\infty). They were introduced and studied by G.Olshanski and A.Borodin. Disjointness of the representations can be reduced to disjointness of certain probability measures on the space of paths in the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph. We prove the latter disjointness using probabilistic and combinatorial methods.

Combinatorial Constructions of Weight Bases: The Gelfand-Tsetlin Basis
Published • View PublicationBIB
This work is part of a project on weight bases for the irreducible representations of semisimple Lie algebras with respect to which the representation matrices of the Chevalley generators are given by explicit formulas. In the case of sl_n, the celebrated Gelfand-Tsetlin basis is the only such basis known. Using the setup of supporting graphs developed by Donnelly, we present a simple combinatorial proof of the Gelfand-Tsetlin formulas based on a rational function identity. Some properties of the Gelfand-Tsetlin basis are derived via an algorithm for solving certain equations on the lattice of semistandard Young tableaux.

Asymptotics of Plancherel measures for the infinite-dimensional unitary group
Published in Advances in Mathematics, Volume 219, Issue 3, 20 October 2008, Pages 894-931 • View PublicationBIB
We study a two-dimensional family of probability measures on infinite Gelfand-Tsetlin schemes induced by a distinguished family of extreme characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary group. These measures are unitary group analogs of the well-known Plancherel measures for symmetric groups. We show that any measure from our family defines a determinantal point process, and we prove that in appropriate scaling limits, such processes converge to two different extensions of the discrete sine process as well as to the extended Airy and Pearcey processes.

Chains in the Bruhat order
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study a family of polynomials whose values express degrees of Schubert varieties in the generalized complex flag manifold G/B. The polynomials are given by weighted sums over saturated chains in the Bruhat order. We derive several explicit formulas for these polynomials, and investigate their relations with Schubert polynomials, harmonic polynomials, Demazure characters, and generalized Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. In the second half of the paper, we concern with the case of to the classical flag manifold of Lie type A and discuss related combinatorial objects: flagged Schur polynomials, 312-avoiding permutations, generalized Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes, the inverse Schubert-Kostka matrix, parking functions, and binary trees.

Signature quantization, representations of compact Lie groups, and a q-analogue of the Kostant partition function
Published • View PublicationBIB
We discuss some applications of signature quantization to the representation theory of compact Lie groups. In particular, we prove signature analogues of the Kostant formula for weight multiplicities and the Steinberg formula for tensor product multiplicities. Using symmetric functions, we also find, for type A, analogues of the Weyl branching rule and the Gelfand-Tsetlin theorem. These analogues involve a q-analogue of the Kostant partition function. We show that in type A, this q-analogue is polynomial in the relative interior of the cells of a complex of cones. This chamber complex can be taken to be the same as the chamber complex of the usual Kostant partition function. We present the case of A_2 as a detailed example.

Discrete strip-concave functions, Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, and related polyhedra
Published in J. of Combinatorial Theory, Ser. A, 112, No 2, 2005, 175-193 • View PublicationBIB
Discrete strip-concave functions considered in this paper are, in fact, equivalent to an extension of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns to the case when the pattern has a not necessarily triangular but convex configuration. They arise by releasing one of the three types of rhombus inequalities for discrete concave functions (or ``hives'') on a ``convex part'' of a triangular grid. The paper is devoted to a combinatorial study of certain polyhedra related to such functions or patterns, and results on faces, integer points and volumes of these polyhedra are presented. Also some relationships and applications are discussed. In particular, we characterize, in terms of valid inequalities, the polyhedral cone formed by the boundary values of discrete strip-concave functions on a grid having trapezoidal configuration. As a consequence of this result, necessary and sufficient conditions on a pair of vectors to be the shape and content of a semi-standard skew Young tableau are obtained.

Vertices of Gelfand-Tsetlin Polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper is a study of the polyhedral geometry of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns arising in the representation theory $\mathfrak{gl}_n \C$ and algebraic combinatorics. We present a combinatorial characterization of the vertices and a method to calculate the dimension of the lowest-dimensional face containing a given Gelfand-Tsetlin pattern. As an application, we disprove a conjecture of Berenstein and Kirillov about the integrality of all vertices of the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes. We can construct for each $n\geq5$ a counterexample, with arbitrarily increasing denominators as $n$ grows, of a non-integral vertex. This is the first infinite family of non-integral polyhedra for which the Ehrhart counting function is still a polynomial. We also derive a bound on the denominators for the non-integral vertices when $n$ is fixed.

A vector partition function for the multiplicities of sl_k(C)
Published • View PublicationBIB
We use Gelfand-Tsetlin diagrams to write down the weight multiplicity function for the Lie algebra sl_k(C) (type A_{k-1}) as a single partition function. This allows us to apply known results about partition functions to derive interesting properties of the weight diagrams. We relate this description to that of the Duistermaat-Heckman measure from symplectic geometry, which gives a large-scale limit way to look at multiplicity diagrams. We also provide an explanation for why the weight polynomials in the boundary regions of the weight diagrams exhibit a number of linear factors. Using symplectic geometry, we prove that the partition of the permutahedron into domains of polynomiality of the Duistermaat-Heckman function is the same as that for the weight multiplicity function, and give an elementary proof of this for sl_4(C) (A_3).

Ubiquity of Kostka polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We report about results revolving around Kostka-Foulkes and parabolic Kostka polynomials and their connections with Representation Theory and Combinatorics. It appears that the set of all parabolic Kostka polynomials forms a semigroup, which we call {\it Liskova semigroup}. We show that polynomials frequently appearing in Representation Theory and Combinatorics belong to the Liskova semigroup. Among such polynomials we study rectangular $q$-Catalan numbers; generalized exponents polynomials; principal specializations of the internal product of Schur functions; generalized $q$-Gaussian polynomials; parabolic Kostant partition function and its $q$-analog; certain generating functions on the set of transportation matrices. In each case we apply rigged configurations technique to obtain some interesting and new information about Kostka-Foulkes and parabolic Kostka polynomials, Kostant partition function, MacMahon, Gelfand-Tsetlin and Chan-Robbins polytopes. We describe certain connections between generalized saturation and Fulton's conjectures and parabolic Kostka polynomials; domino tableaux and rigged configurations. We study also some properties of $l$-restricted generalized exponents and the stable behaviour of certain Kostka-Foulkes polynomials.
