A note on corollaries to Tokuyama's Identity for symplectic Schur $Q$-Functions
We present some corollaries to a symplectic primed shifted tableaux version of Tokuyama's identity expressed in terms of other combinatorial constructs, namely generalised $U$-turn alternating sign matrices and strict symplectic Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns.

Hilbert space frames generalize orthonormal bases to allow redundancy in representations of vectors while keeping good reconstruction properties. A frame comes with an associated frame operator encoding essential properties of the frame. We study a polytope that arises in an algorithm for constructing all finite frames with given lengths of frame vectors and spectrum of the frame operator, which is a Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope. For equal norm tight frames, we give a non-redundant description of the polytope in terms of equations and inequalities. From this we obtain the dimension and number of facets of the polytope.

The present work stemmed from the study of the problem of harmonic analysis on the infinite-dimensional unitary group U(\infty). That problem consisted in the decomposition of a certain 4-parameter family of unitary representations, which replace the nonexisting two-sided regular representation (Olshanski, J. Funct. Anal., 2003, arXiv:0109193). The required decomposition is governed by certain probability measures on an infinite-dimensional space Ω, which is a dual object to U(\infty). A way to describe those measures is to convert them into determinantal point processes on the real line, it turned out that their correlation kernels are computable in explicit form --- they admit a closed expression in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric function 2-F-1 (Borodin and Olshanski, Ann. Math., 2005, arXiv:0109194).
In the present work we describe a (nonevident) q-discretization of the whole construction. This leads us to a new family of determinantal point processes. We reveal its connection with an exotic finite system of q-discrete orthogonal polynomials --- the so-called pseudo big q-Jacobi polynomials. The new point processes live on a double q-lattice and we show that their correlation kernels are expressed through the basic hypergeometric function 2-φ-1.
A crucial novel ingredient of our approach is an extended version G of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph (the conventional graph describes the Gelfand-Tsetlin branching rule for irreducible representations of unitary groups). We find the q-boundary of G, thus extending previously known results (Gorin, Adv. Math., 2012, arXiv:1011.1769).
On the representation theory of $G\sim S_n$

In the Vershik-Okounkov approach to the complex irreducible representations of $S_n$ and $G\sim S_n$ we parametrize the irreducible representations and their bases by spectral objects rather than combinatorial objects and then, at the end, give a bijection between the spectral and combinatorial objects. The fundamental ideas are similar in both cases but there are additional technicalities involved in the $G\sim S_n$ case. This was carried out by Pushkarev.
The present work gives a fully detailed exposition of Pushkarev's theory. For the most part we follow the original but our definition of a Gelfand-Tsetlin subspace, based on a multiplicity free chain of subgroups, is slightly different and leads to a more natural development of the theory. We also work out in detail an example, the generalized Johnson scheme, from this viewpoint.

We consider $U_{q}(\mathfrak{gl}_{n})$, the quantum group of type $A$ for $|q| = 1$, $q$ generic. We provide formulas for signature characters of irreducible finite-dimensional highest weight modules and Verma modules. In both cases, the technique involves combinatorics of the Gelfand-Tsetlin bases. As an application, we obtain information about unitarity of finite-dimensional irreducible representations for arbitrary $q$: we classify the continuous spectrum of the unitarity locus. We also recover some known results in the classical limit $q \rightarrow 1$ that were obtained by different means. Finally, we provide several explicit examples of signature characters.
Minuscule Schubert varieties: Poset polytopes, PBW-degenerated Demazure modules, and Kogan faces

We study a family of posets and the associated chain and order polytopes. We identify the order polytope as a maximal Kogan face in a Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope of a multiple of a fundamental weight. We show that the character of such a Kogan face equals to the character of a Demazure module which occurs in the irreducible representation of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ having highest weight multiple of fundamental weight and for any such Demazure module there exists a corresponding poset and associated maximal Kogan face. We prove that the chain polytope parametrizes a monomial basis of the associated PBW-graded Demazure module and further, that the Demazure module is a favourable module, e.g. interesting geometric properties are governed by combinatorics of convex polytopes. Thus, we obtain for any minuscule Schubert variety a flat degeneration into a toric projective variety which is projectively normal and arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition on the Weyl group element such that the toric variety associated to the chain polytope and the toric variety associated to the order polytope are isomorphic.

We exploit the idea that the character of an irreducible finite dimensional $\mathfrak{gl}_n$-module is the sum of certain exponents of integer points in a Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope and can thus be calculated via Brion's theorem. In order to show how the result of such a calculation matches Weyl's character formula we prove some interesting combinatorial traits of Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes. Namely, we show that under the relevant substitution the integer point transforms of all but $n!$ vertices vanish, the remaining ones being the summands in Weyl's formula.

Macdonald polynomials are an important class of symmetric functions, with connections to many different fields. Etingof and Kirillov showed an intimate connection between these functions and representation theory: they proved that Macdonald polynomials arise as (suitably normalized) vector-valued characters of irreducible representations of quantum groups. In this paper, we provide a branching rule for these characters. The coefficients are expressed in terms of skew Macdonald polynomials with plethystic substitutions. We use our branching rule to give an expansion of the characters with respect to the Gelfand-Tsetlin basis. Finally, we study in detail the $q=0$ case, where the coefficients factor nicely, and have an interpretation in terms of certain $p$-adic counts.
Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes and the integer decomposition property

Let $P$ be the Gelfand--Tsetlin polytope defined by the skew shape $λ/μ$ and weight $w$. In the case corresponding to a standard Young tableau, we completely characterize for which shapes $λ/μ$ the polytope $P$ is integral. Furthermore, we show that $P$ is a compressed polytope whenever it is integral and corresponds to a standard Young tableau. We conjecture that a similar property hold for arbitrary $w$, namely that $P$ has the integer decomposition property whenever it is integral.
Finally, a natural partial ordering on GT-polytopes is introduced that provides information about integrality and the integer decomposition property, which implies the conjecture for certain shapes.

The goal of the paper is to describe new connections between representation theory and algebraic combinatorics on one side, and probability theory on the other side.
The central result is a construction, by essentially algebraic tools, of a family of Markov processes. The common state space of these processes is an infinite dimensional (but locally compact) space Omega. It arises in representation theory as the space of indecomposable characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary group U(infinity).
Alternatively, Omega can be defined in combinatorial terms as the boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph --- an infinite graded graph that encodes the classical branching rule for characters of the compact unitary groups U(N).
We also discuss two other topics concerning the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph:
(1) Computation of the number of trapezoidal Gelfand-Tsetlin schemes (one could also say, the number of integral points in a truncated Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope). The formula we obtain is well suited for asymptotic analysis.
(2) A degeneration procedure relating the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph to the Young graph by means of a new combinatorial object, the Young bouquet.
At the end we discuss a few related works and further developments.
Noncrossing sets and a Graßmann associahedron

We study a natural generalization of the noncrossing relation between pairs of elements in [n] to k-tuples in [n] that was first considered by Petersen, Pylyavskyy, Speyer (2010). We give an alternative approach to their result that the flag simplicial complex on $\binom{[n]}{k}$ induced by this relation is a regular, unimodular and flag triangulation of the order polytope of the poset given by the product $[k]\times[n-k]$ of two chains (also called Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope), and that it is the join of a simplex and a sphere (that is, it is a Gorenstein triangulation). We then observe that this already implies the existence of a flag simplicial polytope generalizing the dual associahedron, whose Stanley-Reisner ideal is an initial ideal of the Graßmann-Plücker ideal, while previous constructions of such a polytope did not guarantee flagness nor reduced to the dual associahedron for k=2. On our way we provide general results about order polytopes and their triangulations. We call the simplicial complex the noncrossing complex, and the polytope derived from it the dual Graßmann associahedron. We extend results of Petersen, Pylyavskyy, Speyer (2010) showing that the non-crossing complex and the Graßmann associahedron naturally reflect the relations between Graßmannians with different parameters, in particular the isomorphism $G_{k,n} \cong G_{n-k,n}$. Moreover, our approach allows us to show that the adjacency graph of the noncrossing complex admits a natural acyclic orientation that allows us to define a Graßmann-Tamari order on maximal noncrossing families. Finally, we look at the precise relation of the noncrossing complex and the weak separability complex of Leclerc, Zelevinsky (1998) and show that the weak separability complex is the cyclically invariant part of the noncrossibg complex.
A Generalization of Tokuyama's Formula to the Hall-Littlewood Polynomials

A theorem due to Tokuyama expresses Schur polynomials in terms of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, providing a deformation of the Weyl character formula and two other classical results, Stanley's formula for the Schur $q$-polynomials and Gelfand's parametrization for the Schur polynomial. We generalize Tokuyama's formula to the Hall-Littlewood polynomials by extending Tokuyama's statistics. Our result, in addition to specializing to Tokuyama's result and the aforementioned classical results, also yields connections to the monomial symmetric function and a new deformation of Stanley's formula.
Quantum cluster algebra structures on quantum nilpotent algebras

All algebras in a very large, axiomatically defined class of quantum nilpotent algebras are proved to possess quantum cluster algebra structures under mild conditions. Furthermore, it is shown that these quantum cluster algebras always equal the corresponding upper quantum cluster algebras. Previous approaches to these problems for the construction of (quantum) cluster algebra structures on (quantized) coordinate rings arising in Lie theory were done on a case by case basis relying on the combinatorics of each concrete family. The results of the paper have a broad range of applications to these problems, including the construction of quantum cluster algebra structures on quantum unipotent groups and quantum double Bruhat cells (the Berenstein-Zelevinsky conjecture), and treat these problems from a unified perspective. All such applications also establish equality between the constructed quantum cluster algebras and their upper counterparts. The proofs rely on Chatters' notion of noncommutative unique factorization domains. Toric frames are constructed by considering sequences of homogeneous prime elements of chains of noncommutative UFDs (a generalization of the construction of Gelfand-Tsetlin subalgebras) and mutations are obtained by altering chains of noncommutative UFDs. Along the way, an intricate (and unified) combinatorial model for the homogeneous prime elements in chains of noncommutative UFDs and their alterations is developed. When applied to special families, this recovers the combinatorics of Weyl groups and double Weyl groups previously used in the construction and categorification of cluster algebras. It is expected that this combinatorial model of sequences of homogeneous prime elements will have applications to the unified categorification of quantum nilpotent algebras.

In this note, we formulate and prove branching rules of simple polynomial modules for the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{gl}(m|n)$. Our branching rules depend on the conjugacy class of the Borel subalgebra. A Gelfand-Tsetlin basis of a polynomial module associated to each Borel subalgebra is obtained in terms of generalized semistandard tableaux.

We introduce a q-weighted version of the Robinson-Schensted (column insertion) algorithm which is closely connected to q-Whittaker functions (or Macdonald polynomials with t=0) and reduces to the usual Robinson-Schensted algorithm when q=0. The q-insertion algorithm is `randomised', or `quantum', in the sense that when inserting a positive integer into a tableau, the output is a distribution of weights on a particular set of tableaux which includes the output which would have been obtained via the usual column insertion algorithm. There is also a notion of recording tableau in this setting. We show that the distribution of weights of the pair of tableaux obtained when one applies the q-insertion algorithm to a random word or permutation takes a particularly simple form and is closely related to q-Whittaker functions. In the case $0\le q<1$, the q-insertion algorithm applied to a random word also provides a new framework for solving the q-TASEP interacting particle system introduced (in the language of q-bosons) by Sasamoto and Wadati (1998) and yields formulas which are equivalent to some of those recently obtained by Borodin and Corwin (2011) via a stochastic evolution on discrete Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns (or semistandard tableaux) which is coupled to the q-TASEP process. We show that the sequence of P-tableaux obtained when one applies the q-insertion algorithm to a random word defines another, quite different, evolution on semistandard tableaux which is also coupled to the q-TASEP process.

We are interested in finding an explicit bijection between two families of combinatorial objects: Gog and Magog triangles. These two families are particular classes of Gelfand-Tsetlin triangles and are respectively in bijection with alternating sign matrices (ASM) and totally symmetric self complementary plane partitions (TSSCPP). For this purpose, we introduce left Gog and GOGAm trapezoids. We conjecture that these two families of trapezoids are equienumerated and we give an explicit bijection between the trapezoids with one or two diagonals.
From quantum Ore extensions to quantum tori via noncommutative UFDs

All iterated skew polynomial extensions arising from quantized universal enveloping algebras of Kac-Moody algebras are special examples of a very large, axiomatically defined class of algebras, called CGL extensions. For the purposes of constructing initial clusters for quantum cluster algebra structures on an algebra R, and classification of the automorphisms of R, one needs embeddings of R into quantum tori T which have the property that R contains the corresponding quantum affine space algebra A. We explicitly construct such an embedding A \subseteq R \subset T for each CGL extension R using the methods of noncommutative noetherian unique factorization domains and running a Gelfand-Tsetlin type procedure with normal, instead of central elements. Along the way we classify the homogeneous prime elements of all CGL extensions and we prove that each CGL extension R has an associated maximal torus which covers the automorphisms of R corresponding to all normal elements. For symmetric CGL extensions, we describe the relationship between our quantum affine space algebra A and Cauchon's quantum affine space algebra generated by elements obtained via deleting derivations.
The Boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin Graph: New Proof of Borodin-Olshanski's Formula, and its q-analogue

In the recent paper [arXiv:1109.1412], Borodin and Olshanski have presented a novel proof of the celebrated Edrei-Voiculescu theorem which describes the boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph as a region in an infinite-dimensional coordinate space. This graph encodes branching of irreducible characters of finite-dimensional unitary groups. Points of the boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph can be identified with finite indecomposable (= extreme) characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary group. An equivalent description identifies the boundary with the set of doubly infinite totally nonnegative sequences.
A principal ingredient of Borodin-Olshanski's proof is a new explicit determinantal formula for the number of semi-standard Young tableaux of a given skew shape (or of Gelfand-Tsetlin schemes of trapezoidal shape). We present a simpler and more direct derivation of that formula using the Cauchy-Binet summation involving the inverse Vandermonde matrix. We also obtain a q-generalization of that formula, namely, a new explicit determinantal formula for arbitrary q-specializations of skew Schur polynomials. Its particular case is related to the q-Gelfand-Tsetlin graph and q-Toeplitz matrices introduced and studied by Gorin [arXiv:1011.1769].

We study large-scale height fluctuations of random stepped surfaces corresponding to uniformly random lozenge tilings of polygons on the triangular lattice. For a class of polygons (which allows arbitrarily large number of sides), we show that these fluctuations are asymptotically governed by a Gaussian free (massless) field. This complements the similar result obtained in Kenyon [Comm. Math. Phys. 281 (2008) 675-709] about tilings of regions without frozen facets of the limit shape. In our asymptotic analysis we use the explicit double contour integral formula for the determinantal correlation kernel of the model obtained previously in Petrov [Asymptotics of random lozenge tilings via Gelfand-Tsetlin schemes (2012) Preprint].
