Universal symplectic/orthogonal functions and general branching rules
In this paper, we first introduce a family of universal symplectic functions $sp_λ(\mathbf{x}^{\pm};\mathbf{z})$ that include symplectic Schur functions $sp_λ(\mathbf{x}^{\pm})$, odd symplectic characters $sp_λ(\mathbf{x}^{\pm};z)$, universal symplectic characters $sp_λ(\mathbf{z})$ and intermediate symplectic characters as subfamilies. We then realize the universal symplectic functions by vertex operators, which naturally lead to their skew versions, and show that $sp_λ(\mathbf{x}^{\pm};\mathbf{z})$ obey the general branching rules. This also gives the Gelfand-Tsetlin representations of odd symplectic characters and a transition formula between odd symplectic characters and symplectic Schur functions.
Secondly we introduce a family of universal orthogonal functions $o_λ(\mathbf{x}^{\pm};\mathbf{z})$ and their skew versions in a similar manner, and we provide their vertex operator realizations and obtain transition formulas and the branching rule. The universal orthogonal functions $o_λ(\mathbf{x}^{\pm};\mathbf{z})$ generalize orthogonal Schur functions $o_λ(\mathbf{x}^{\pm})$, odd orthogonal Schur functions $so_λ(\mathbf{x}^{\pm})$, universal orthogonal characters $o_λ(\mathbf{z})$ as well as intermediate orthogonal characters.
Thirdly, we give vertex operator realizations for the $CB$-interpolating Schur functions $s^{CB}_λ(x;β)$ introduced by Bisi and Zygouras (Adv. Math., 2022) and the $DB$-interpolating Schur functions $s^{DB}_λ(x;β)$ interpolating between characters of type $D$ and $B$. As an application, we show $s^{CB}_λ(x;β)$ are equal to the orthosymplectic Schur polynomials $spo_λ(x/β)$, thus give a short proof of the generalization of the Brent-Krattenthaler-Warnaar identity obtained by Kumari (arXiv:2401.01723).

Using the vertex operator representations for symplectic and orthogonal Schur functions, we define two families of symmetric functions and show thatthey are the skew symplectic and skew orthogonal Schur polynomials defined implicitly by Koike and Terada and satisfy the general branching rules. Furthermore, we derive the Jacobi-Trudi identities and Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns for these symmetric functions. Additionally, the vertex operator method yields their Cauchy-type identities. This demonstrates that vertex operator representations serve not only as a tool for studying symmetric functions but also offers unified realizations for skew Schur functions of types A, C, and D.

The Gelfand-Tsetlin and the Feigin-Fourier-Littelmann-Vinberg polytopes for the Grassmannians are defined, from the perspective of representation theory, to parametrize certain bases for highest weight irreducible modules. These polytopes are Newton-Okounkov bodies for the Grassmannian and, in particular, the GT-polytope is an example of a string polytope. The polytopes admit a combinatorial description as the Stanley's order and chain polytopes of a certain poset, as shown by Ardila, Bliem and Salaza. We prove that these polytopes occur among matching field polytopes. Moreover, we show that they are related by a sequence of combinatorial mutations that passes only through matching field polytopes. As a result, we obtain a family of matching fields that give rise to toric degenerations for the Grassmannians. Moreover, all polytopes in the family are Newton-Okounkov bodies for the Grassmannians.

We show that the polytopes obtained from the Birkhoff polytope by imposing additional inequalities restricting the "longest increasing subsequence" have Ehrhart quasi-polynomials which are honest polynomials, even though they are just rational polytopes in general. We do this by defining a continuous, piecewise-linear bijection to a certain Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope. This bijection is not an integral equivalence but it respects lattice points in the appropriate way to imply that the two polytopes have the same Ehrhart (quasi-)polynomials. In fact, the bijection is essentially the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence.
Dynamical Loop Equation

We introduce dynamical versions of loop (or Dyson-Schwinger) equations for large families of two--dimensional interacting particle systems, including Dyson Brownian motion, Nonintersecting Bernoulli/Poisson random walks, $β$--corners processes, uniform and Jack-deformed measures on Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, Macdonald processes, and $(q,κ)$-distributions on lozenge tilings. Under technical assumptions, we show that the dynamical loop equations lead to Gaussian field type fluctuations.
As an application, we compute the limit shape for $(q,κ)$--distributions on lozenge tilings and prove that their height fluctuations converge to the Gaussian Free Field in an appropriate complex structure.
Hall-Littlewood polynomials, boundaries, and $p$-adic random matrices
We prove that the boundary of the Hall-Littlewood $t$-deformation of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph is parametrized by infinite integer signatures, extending results of Gorin and Cuenca on boundaries of related deformed Gelfand-Tsetlin graphs. In the special case when $1/t$ is a prime $p$ we use this to recover results of Bufetov-Qiu and Assiotis on infinite $p$-adic random matrices, placing them in the general context of branching graphs derived from symmetric functions.
Our methods rely on explicit formulas for certain skew Hall-Littlewood polynomials. As a separate corollary to these, we obtain a simple expression for the joint distribution of the cokernels of products $A_1, A_2A_1, A_3A_2A_1,\ldots$ of independent Haar-distributed matrices $A_i$ over the $p$-adic integers $\mathbb{Z}_p$. This expression generalizes the explicit formula for the classical Cohen-Lenstra measure on abelian $p$-groups.
Combinatorics of Iwahori Whittaker Functions
We give a combinatorial evaluation of Iwahori Whittaker functions for unramified genuine principal series representations on metaplectic covers of the general linear group over a non-archimedean local field. To describe the combinatorics, we introduce new combinatorial data that we call colored data: colored Lusztig data, colored Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, and colored lattice models. We show that all three are equivalent. To achieve the result, we give an explicit Iwahori decomposition for the maximal unipotent subgroup of a split reductive group which gives the parametrization of the generalized Mirković-Vilonen cycles in the affine flag varieties and is of interest in itself.
Our result is based and naturally extends Peter McNamara's evaluation of the metaplectic spherical Whittaker function in terms of Lusztig data.

Relation Gelfand-Tsetlin $\mathfrak{gl}_n$-modules were introduced in [FRZ19], and are determined by some special directed graphs and Gelfand-Tsetlin characters. In this work we constructed polyhedra associated with the class of relation modules, which includes as a particular case, any classical Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope. Following the ideas presented in [LM04] we give a characterization of $d$-faces of the associated polyhedra in terms of a matrix related to the corresponding graph.

Marked chain-order polytopes are convex polytopes constructed from a marked poset, which give a discrete family relating a marked order polytope with a marked chain polytope. In this paper, we consider the Gelfand-Tsetlin poset of type A, and realize the associated marked chain-order polytopes as Newton-Okounkov bodies of the flag variety. Our realization connects previous realizations of Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes and Feigin-Fourier-Littelmann-Vinberg polytopes as Newton-Okounkov bodies in a uniform way. As an application, we prove that the flag variety degenerates into the irreducible normal projective toric variety corresponding to a marked chain-order polytope. We also construct a specific basis of an irreducible highest weight representation which is naturally parametrized by the set of lattice points in a marked chain-order polytope.

We define P-strict labelings for a finite poset P as a generalization of semistandard Young tableaux and show that promotion on these objects is in equivariant bijection with a toggle action on B-bounded Q-partitions of an associated poset Q. In many nice cases, this toggle action is conjugate to rowmotion. We apply this result to flagged tableaux, Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, and symplectic tableaux, obtaining new cyclic sieving and homomesy conjectures. We also show P-strict promotion can be equivalently defined using Bender-Knuth and jeu de taquin perspectives.

One approach to Schubert calculus is to realize Schubert classes as concrete combinatorial objects such as Schubert polynomials. Through an identification of the cohomology ring of the type A full flag variety with the polytope ring of the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes, Kiritchenko-Smirnov-Timorin realized each Schubert class as a sum of reduced (dual) Kogan faces. In this paper, we explicitly describe string parametrizations of opposite Demazure crystals, which give a natural generalization of reduced dual Kogan faces. We also relate reduced Kogan faces with Demazure crystals using the theory of mitosis operators, and apply these observations to develop the theory of Schubert calculus on symplectic Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes.
Macdonald polynomials and extended Gelfand-Tsetlin graph

Using Okounkov's $q$-integral representation of Macdonald polynomials we construct an infinite sequence $Ω_1,Ω_2,Ω_3,\dots$ of countable sets linked by transition probabilities from $Ω_N$ to $Ω_{N-1}$ for each $N=2,3,\dots$. The elements of the sets $Ω_N$ are the vertices of the extended Gelfand-Tsetlin graph, and the transition probabilities depend on the two Macdonald parameters, $q$ and $t$. These data determine a family of Markov chains, and the main result is the description of their entrance boundaries. This work has its origin in asymptotic representation theory. In the subsequent paper, the main result is applied to large-$N$ limit transition in $(q,t)$-deformed $N$-particle beta-ensembles.

We give a crystal structure on the set of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns which parametrize bases for finite-dimensional irreducible representations of the general linear Lie algebra. The crystal data are given in closed form, expressed using tropical polynomial functions of the entries of the patterns. We prove that with this crystal structure, the natural bijection between Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns and semistandard Young tableaux is a crystal isomorphism.
Skew Howe duality for crystals and the cactus group
The crystals for a finite-dimensional complex reductive Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ encode the structure of its representations, yet can also reveal surprising new structure of their own. We study the cactus group $C_{\mathfrak{g}}$, constructed using the Dynkin diagram of $\mathfrak{g}$, and its combinatorial action on any $\mathfrak{g}$-crystal via Schützenberger involutions. We compare this action with that of the Berenstein-Kirillov group on Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns. Henriques and Kamnitzer define an action of $C_n=C_{\mathfrak{gl}_n}$ on $n$-tensor products of $\mathfrak{g}$-crystals, for any $\mathfrak{g}$ as above. We discuss the crystal corresponding to the $\mathfrak{gl}_n \times \mathfrak{gl}_m$-representation $Λ^N(\mathbb{C}^n \otimes \mathbb{C}^m),$ derive skew Howe duality on the crystal level and show that the two types of cactus group actions agree in this setting. A future application of this result is discussed in studying two families of maximal commutative subalgebras of the universal enveloping algebra, the shift of argument and Gaudin algebras, where an algebraically constructed monodromy action matches that of the cactus group.
A Fast Fourier Transform for the Johnson graph

The set $X$ of $k$-subsets of an $n$-set has a natural graph structure where two $k$-subsets are connected if and only if the size of their intersection is $k-1$. This is known as the Johnson graph. The symmetric group $S_n$ acts on the space of complex functions on $X$ and this space has a multiplicity-free decomposition as sum of irreducible representations of $S_n$, so it has a well-defined Gelfand-Tsetlin basis up to scalars. The Fourier transform on the Johnson graph is defined as the change of basis matrix from the delta function basis to the Gelfand-Tsetlin basis.
The direct application of this matrix to a generic vector requires $\binom{n}{k}^2$ arithmetic operations. We show that this matrix can be factorized as a product of $n-1$ orthogonal matrices, each one with at most two nonzero elements in each column. The factorization is based on the construction of $n-1$ intermediate bases which are parametrized via the Robinson-Schensted insertion algorithm. This factorization shows that the number of arithmetic operations required to apply this matrix to a generic vector is bounded above by $2(n-1) \binom{n}{k}$.
We show that each one of these sparse matrices can be constructed using $O(\binom{n}{k})$ arithmetic operations. Our construction does not depend on numerical methods. Instead, they are obtained by solving small linear systems with integer coefficients derived from the Jucys-Murphy operators. Then both the construction and the succesive application of all these $n-1$ matrices can be performed using $O(n \binom{n}{k})$ operations.
As a consequence, we show that the problem of computing all the weights of the isotypic components of a given function can be solved in $O(n \binom{n}{k})$ operations, improving the previous bound $O(k^2 \binom{n}{k})$ when $k$ asymptotically dominates $\sqrt{n}$.

We establish formulae for the moments of the moments of the characteristic polynomials of random orthogonal and symplectic matrices in terms of certain lattice point count problems. This allows us to establish asymptotic formulae when the matrix-size tends to infinity in terms of the volumes of certain regions involving continuous Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns with constraints. The results we find differ from those in the unitary case considered previously

In their study of the equivariant K-theory of the generalized flag varieties $G/P$, where $G$ is a complex semisimple Lie group, and $P$ is a parabolic subgroup of $G$, Lenart and Postnikov introduced a combinatorial tool, called the alcove paths model. It provides a model for the highest weight crystals with dominant integral highest weights, generalizing the model by semistandard Young tableaux. In this paper, we prove a simple and explicit formula describing the crystal isomorphism between the alcove paths model and the Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns model for type $A$.

We study the combinatorial structure of the irreducible characters of the classical groups ${\rm GL}_n(\mathbb{C})$, ${\rm SO}_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$, ${\rm Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$, ${\rm SO}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ and the "non-classical" odd symplectic group ${\rm Sp}_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$, finding new connections to the probabilistic model of Last Passage Percolation (LPP). Perturbing the expressions of these characters as generating functions of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, we produce two families of symmetric polynomials that interpolate between characters of ${\rm Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ and ${\rm SO}_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$ and between characters of ${\rm SO}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ and ${\rm SO}_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$. We identify the first family as a one-parameter specialization of Koornwinder polynomials, for which we thus provide a novel combinatorial structure; on the other hand, the second family appears to be new. We next develop a method of Gelfand-Tsetlin pattern decomposition to establish identities between all these polynomials that, in the case of irreducible characters, can be viewed as branching rules. Through these formulas we connect orthogonal and symplectic characters, and more generally the interpolating polynomials, to LPP models with various symmetries, thus going beyond the link with classical Schur polynomials originally found by Baik and Rains (Duke Math. J., 2001). Taking the scaling limit of the LPP models, we finally provide an explanation of why the Tracy-Widom GOE and GSE distributions from random matrix theory admit formulations in terms of both Fredholm determinants and Fredholm Pfaffians.
Moments of moments of characteristic polynomials of random unitary matrices and lattice point counts
In this note we give a combinatorial and non-computational proof of the asymptotics of the integer moments of the moments of the characteristic polynomials of Haar distributed unitary matrices as the size of the matrix goes to infinity. This is achieved by relating these quantities to a lattice point count problem. Our main result is a new explicit expression for the leading order coefficient in the asymptotic as a volume of a certain region involving continuous Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns with constraints.

In a recent paper, Ayyer and Behrend present for a wide class of partitions factorizations of Schur polynomials with an even number of variables where half of the variables are the reciprocals of the others into symplectic and/or orthogonal group characters, thereby generalizing results of Ciucu and Krattenthaler for rectangular shapes. Their proofs proceed by manipulations of determinants underlying the characters. The purpose of the current paper is to provide bijective proofs of such factorizations. The quantities involved have known combinatorial interpretations in terms of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns of various types or half Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, which can in turn be transformed into perfect matchings of weighted trapezoidal honeycomb graphs. An important ingredient is then Ciucu's theorem for graphs with reflective symmetry. However, before being able to apply it, we need to employ a certain averaging procedure in order to achieve symmetric edge weights. This procedure is based on a "randomized" bijection, which can however also be turned into a classical bijection. For one type of Schur polynomial factorization, we also need an additional graph operation that almost doubles the underlying graph. Finally, our combinatorial proofs reveal that the factorizations under consideration can in fact also be generalized to skew shapes as discussed at the end of the paper.
