Cohen-Macaulay and Gorenstein path ideals of trees

Let $R=k[x_{1},\ldots,x_{n}]$, where $k$ is a field. The path ideal (of length $t\geq 2$) of a directed graph $G$ is the monomial ideal, denoted by $I_{t}(G)$, whose generators correspond to the directed paths of length $t$ in $G$. Let $Γ$ be a directed rooted tree. We characterize all such trees whose path ideals are unmixed and Cohen-Macaulay.
Moreover, we show that $R/I_{t}(Γ)$ is Gorenstein if and only if the Stanley-Reisner simplicial complex of $I_{t}(Γ)$ is a matroid.

The characterization of lattice polytopes based upon information about their Ehrhart $h^*$-polynomials is a difficult open problem. In this paper, we finish the classification of lattice polytopes whose $h^*$-polynomials satisfy two properties: they are palindromic (so the polytope is Gorenstein) and they consist of precisely three terms. This extends the classification of Gorenstein polytopes of degree two due to Batyrev and Juny. The proof relies on the recent characterization of Batyrev and Hofscheier of empty lattice simplices whose $h^*$-polynomials have precisely two terms. Putting our theorem in perspective, we give a summary of these and other existing results in this area.
Blow-up algebras, determinantal ideals, and Dedekind-Mertens-like formulas

We investigate Rees algebras and special fiber rings obtained by blowing up specialized Ferrers ideals. This class of monomial ideals includes strongly stable monomial ideals generated in degree two and edge ideals of prominent classes of graphs. We identify the equations of these blow-up algebras. They generate determinantal ideals associated to subregions of a generic symmetric matrix, which may have holes. Exhibiting Gröbner bases for these ideals and using methods from Gorenstein liaison theory, we show that these determinantal rings are normal Cohen-Macaulay domains that are Koszul, that the initial ideals correspond to vertex decomposable simplicial complexes, and we determine their Hilbert functions and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularities. As a consequence, we find explicit minimal reductions for all Ferrers and many specialized Ferrers ideals, as well as their reduction numbers. These results can be viewed as extensions of the classical Dedekind-Mertens formula for the content of the product of two polynomials.

Assume sigma is a face of a Gorenstein* simplicial complex D. We investigate the question of whether the Weak Lefschetz Property of the Stanley-Reisner ring k[D] (over an infinite field k) is equivalent to the same property of the Stanley-Reisner ring k[D_sigma] of the stellar subdivision D_sigma. We prove that this is the case if the dimension of sigma is big compared to the codimension.
Let Δbe a Cohen-Macaulay complex
The concept of Cohen-Macaulay complexes emerged in the mid-1970s and swiftly became the focal point of an attractive and richly connected new area of mathematics, at the crossroads of combinatoics, commutative algebra and topology. As the main architect of these developments, Richard Stanley has made fundamental contributions over many years.
This paper contains some brief mathematical discussions related to the Cohen-Macaulay property, and some personal memories. The characterization of Gorenstein* and homotopy Gorenstein* complexes and the relevance in that connection of the Poincaré conjecture is discussed. Another topic is combinatorial aspects of a recent result on the homotopy Cohen-Macaulayness of certain subsets of geometric lattices, motivated by questions in tropical geometry.

We give a characterizaion of Gorenstein toric Fano $n$-folds with index $n-1$, which is called Gorenstein toric Del Pezzo $n$-folds, among toric varieties. In practice, we obtain a condition for a lattice $n$-polytope to be a Gorenstein Fano polytope. In our proof, we do not use Batyrev-Juny's classification of Gorenstein Fano polytopes.

Let $k, n$ and $r$ be positive integers with $k < n$ and $r\leq\lfloor\frac{n}{k}\rfloor$. We determine the facets of the $r$-stable $n,k$-hypersimplex. As a result, it turns out that the $r$-stable $n,k$-hypersimplex has exactly $2n$ facets for every $r<\lfloor\frac{n}{k}\rfloor$. We then utilize the equations of the facets to study when the $r$-stable hypersimplex is Gorenstein. For every $k>0$ we identify an infinite collection of Gorenstein $r$-stable hypersimplices, consequently expanding the collection of $r$-stable hypersimplices known to have unimodal Ehrhart $δ$-vectors.

Let $\mathcal{V}=\bigsqcup_{i=0}^n\mathcal{V}_i$ be the lattice of subspaces of the $n$-dimensional vector space over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ and let $\mathcal{A}$ be the graded Gorenstein algebra defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ which has $\mathcal{V}$ as a $\mathbb{Q}$ basis. Let $F$ be the Macaulay dual generator for $\mathcal{A}$. We compute explicitly the Hessian determinant $|\frac{\partial ^2F}{\partial X_i \partial X_j}|$ evaluated at the point $X_1 = X_2 = \cdots = X_N=1$ and relate it to the determinant of the incidence matrix between $\mathcal{V}_1$ and $\mathcal{V}_{n-1}$. Our exploration is motivated by the fact that both of these matrices arise naturally in the study of the Sperner property of the lattice and the Lefschetz property for the graded Artinian Gorenstein algebra associated to it.
A characterization of Gorenstein toric Fano $n$-folds with index $n$ and Fujita's conjecture
We give a characterization of Gorenstein toric Fano varieties of dimension $n$ with index $n$ among toric varieties. As an application, we give a strong version of Fujita's freeness conjecture and also give a simple proof of Fujita's very ampleness conjecture on Gorenstein toric varieties.

In the past, empirical evidence has been presented that Hilbert series of symplectic quotients of unitary representations obey a certain universal system of infinitely many constraints. Formal series with this property have been called \emph{symplectic}. Here we show that a formal power series is symplectic if and only if it is a formal composite with the formal power series $x^2/(1-x)$. Hence the set of symplectic power series forms a subalgebra of the algebra of formal power series. The subalgebra property is translated into an identity for the coefficients of the even Euler polynomials, which can be interpreted as a cubic identity for the Bernoulli numbers. Furthermore we show that a rational power series is symplectic if and only if it is invariant under the idempotent Möbius transformation $x\mapsto x/(x-1)$. It follows that the Hilbert series of a graded Cohen-Macaulay algebra $A$ is symplectic if and only if $A$ is Gorenstein with its a-invariant and its Krull dimension adding up to zero. It is shown that this is the case for algebras of regular functions on symplectic quotients of unitary representations of tori.
Noncrossing sets and a Graßmann associahedron

We study a natural generalization of the noncrossing relation between pairs of elements in [n] to k-tuples in [n] that was first considered by Petersen, Pylyavskyy, Speyer (2010). We give an alternative approach to their result that the flag simplicial complex on $\binom{[n]}{k}$ induced by this relation is a regular, unimodular and flag triangulation of the order polytope of the poset given by the product $[k]\times[n-k]$ of two chains (also called Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope), and that it is the join of a simplex and a sphere (that is, it is a Gorenstein triangulation). We then observe that this already implies the existence of a flag simplicial polytope generalizing the dual associahedron, whose Stanley-Reisner ideal is an initial ideal of the Graßmann-Plücker ideal, while previous constructions of such a polytope did not guarantee flagness nor reduced to the dual associahedron for k=2. On our way we provide general results about order polytopes and their triangulations. We call the simplicial complex the noncrossing complex, and the polytope derived from it the dual Graßmann associahedron. We extend results of Petersen, Pylyavskyy, Speyer (2010) showing that the non-crossing complex and the Graßmann associahedron naturally reflect the relations between Graßmannians with different parameters, in particular the isomorphism $G_{k,n} \cong G_{n-k,n}$. Moreover, our approach allows us to show that the adjacency graph of the noncrossing complex admits a natural acyclic orientation that allows us to define a Graßmann-Tamari order on maximal noncrossing families. Finally, we look at the precise relation of the noncrossing complex and the weak separability complex of Leclerc, Zelevinsky (1998) and show that the weak separability complex is the cyclically invariant part of the noncrossibg complex.
Consequences of the Lakshmibai-Sandhya Theorem: the ubiquity of permutation patterns in Schubert calculus and related geometry

In 1990, Lakshmibai and Sandhya published a characterization of singular Schubert varieties in flag manifolds using the notion of pattern avoidance. This was the first time pattern avoidance was used to characterize geometrical properties of Schubert varieties. Their results are very closely related to work of Haiman, Ryan and Wolper, but Lakshmibai-Sandhya were the first to use that language exactly. Pattern avoidance in permutations was used historically by Knuth, Pratt, Tarjan, and others in the 1960's and 1970's to characterize sorting algorithms in computer science. Lascoux and Sch$\text{ü}$tzenberger also used pattern avoidance to characterize vexillary permutations in the 1980's. Now, there are many geometrical properties of Schubert varieties that use pattern avoidance as a method for characterization including Gorenstein, factorial, local complete intersections, and properties of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. These are what we call consequences of the Lakshmibai-Sandhya theorem. We survey the many beautiful results, generalizations, and remaining open problems in this area. We highlight the advantages of using pattern avoidance characterizations in terms of linear time algorithms and the ease of access to the literature via Tenner's Database of Permutation Pattern Avoidance. This survey is based on lectures by the second author at Osaka, Japan 2012 for the Summer School of the Mathematical Society of Japan based on the topic of Schubert calculus.

We classify all convex polyomino ideals which are linearly related or have a linear resolution. Convex stack polyominoes whose ideals are extremal Gorenstein are also classified. In addition, we characterize, in combinatorial terms, the distributive lattices whose join-meet ideals are extremal Gorenstein or have a linear resolution.
On the dual graph of Cohen-Macaulay algebras

Given a projective algebraic set X, its dual graph G(X) is the graph whose vertices are the irreducible components of X and whose edges connect components that intersect in codimension one. Hartshorne's connectedness theorem says that if (the coordinate ring of) X is Cohen-Macaulay, then G(X) is connected. We present two quantitative variants of Hartshorne's result:
1) If X is a Gorenstein subspace arrangement, then G(X) is r-connected, where r is the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of X. (The bound is best possible; for coordinate arrangements, it yields an algebraic extension of Balinski's theorem for simplicial polytopes.)
2) If X is a canonically embedded arrangement of lines no three of which meet in the same point, then the diameter of the graph G(X) is not larger than the codimension of X. (The bound is sharp; for coordinate arrangements, it yields an algebraic expansion on the recent combinatorial result that the Hirsch conjecture holds for flag normal simplicial complexes.)
The edge ideals of complete multipartite hypergraphs

We classify all complete uniform multipartite hypergraphs with respect to some algebraic properties, such as being (almost) complete intersection, Gorenstein, level, $l$-Cohen-Macaulay, $l$-Buchsbaum, unmixed, and satisfying Serre's condition $S_r$, via some combinatorial terms. Also, we prove that for a complete $s$-uniform $t$-partite hypergraph $H$, vertex decomposability, shellability, sequentially $S_r$ and sequentially Cohen-Macaulay properties coincide with the condition that $H$ has $t-1$ sides consisting of a single vertex. Moreover, we show that the latter condition occurs if and only if it is a chordal hypergraph.
Squarefree P-modules and the cd-index

In this paper, we introduce a new algebraic concept, which we call squarefree P-modules. This concept is inspired from Karu's proof of the non-negativity of the cd-indices of Gorenstein* posets, and supplies a way to study cd-indices from the viewpoint of commutative algebra. Indeed, by using the theory of squarefree P-modules, we give several new algebraic and combinatorial results on CW-posets. First, we define an analogue of the cd-index for any CW-poset and prove its non-negativity when a CW-poset is Cohen-Macaulay. This result proves that the h-vector of the barycentric subdivision of a Cohen-Macaulay regular CW-complex is unimodal. Second, we prove that the Stanley-Reisner ring of the barycentric subdivision of an odd dimensional Cohen-Macaulay polyhedral complex has the weak Lefschetz property. Third, we obtain sharp upper bounds of the cd-indices of Gorenstein* posets for a fixed rank generating function.

Let $G$ be a finite simple graph on $[n]$ and $I(G) \subset S$ the edge ideal of $G$, where $S = K[x_{1}, \ldots, x_{n}]$ is the polynomial ring over a field $K$. Let $m(G)$ denote the maximum size of matchings of $G$ and $im(G)$ that of induced matchings of $G$. It is known that $im(G) \leq \text{reg}(S/I(G)) \leq m(G)$, where $\text{reg}(S/I(G))$ is the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of $S/I(G)$. Cameron and Walker succeeded in classifying the finite connected simple graphs $G$ with $im(G) = m(G)$. We say that a finite connected simple graph $G$ is a Cameron-Walker graph if $im(G) = m(G)$ and if $G$ is neither a star nor a star triangle. In the present paper, we study Cameron-Walker graphs from a viewpoint of commutative algebra. First, we prove that a Cameron-Walker graph $G$ is unmixed if and only if $G$ is Cohen-Macaulay and classify all Cohen-Macaulay Cameron-Walker graphs. Second, we prove that there is no Gorenstein Cameron-Walker graph. Finally, we prove that every Cameron--Walker graph is sequentially Cohen-Macaulay.

It is proved that the broken circuit complex of an ordered matroid is Gorenstein if and only if it is a complete intersection. Several characterizations for a matroid that admits such an order are then given, with particular interest in the $h$-vector of broken circuit complexes of the matroid. As an application, we prove that the Orlik--Terao algebra of a hyperplane arrangement is Gorenstein if and only if it is a complete intersection. Interestingly, our result shows that the complete intersection property (and hence the Gorensteinness as well) of the Orlik--Terao algebra can be determined from the last two nonzero entries of its $h$-vector.
Classifying terminal weighted projective space

As a corollary we also classify all four-dimensional one-point lattice simplices up to equivalence. Finally, we classify the terminal Gorenstein weighted projective spaces up to dimension ten.

A Gorenstein polytope of index r is a lattice polytope whose r-th dilate is a reflexive polytope. These objects are of interest in combinatorial commutative algebra and enumerative combinatorics, and play a crucial role in Batyrev's and Borisov's computation of Hodge numbers of mirror-symmetric generic Calabi-Yau complete intersections. In this paper, we report on what is known about smooth Gorenstein polytopes, i.e., Gorenstein polytopes whose normal fan is unimodular. We classify d-dimensional smooth Gorenstein polytopes with index larger than (d+3)/3. Moreover, we use a modification of Oebro's algorithm to achieve classification results for smooth Gorenstein polytopes in low dimensions. The first application of these results is a database of all toric Fano d-folds whose anticanonical divisor is divisible by an integer r larger than d-8. As a second application we verify that there are only finitely many families of Calabi-Yau complete intersections of fixed dimension that are associated to a smooth Gorenstein polytope via the Batyrev-Borisov construction.
