On the X=M=K Conjecture
In the large rank limit, for any nonexceptional affine algebra, the graded branching multiplicities known as one-dimensional sums, are conjectured to have a simple relationship with those of type A, which are known as generalized Kostka polynomials. This is called the X=M=K conjecture. It is proved for tensor products of the symmetric power Kirillov-Reshetikhin modules for all nonexceptional affine algebras except those whose Dynkin diagrams are isomorphic to that of untwisted affine type D near the zero node. Combined with results of Lecouvey, this realizes the above one-dimensional sums of affine type C, as affine Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials (and conjecturally for type D).

A categorification for the chromatic polynomial
Published in Algebr. Geom. Topol. 5 (2005) 1365-1388 • View Publication • BIB
For each graph we construct graded cohomology groups whose graded Euler characteristic is the chromatic polynomial of the graph. We show the cohomology groups satisfy a long exact sequence which corresponds to the well-known deletion-contraction rule. This work is motivated by Khovanov's work on categorification of the Jones polynomial of knots.

Diagonal Temperley-Lieb Invariants and Harmonics
Published in Sém. Lothar. Combin. 54A (2005/07), Art. B54Aq, 19 pp. • Search Publication
In the context of the ring Q[x,y], of polynomials in 2n variables x=x1,...,x_n and y=y1,...,yn, we introduce the notion of diagonally quasi-symmetric polynomials. These, also called "diagonal Temperley-Lieb invariants", make possible the further introduction of the space of "diagonal Temperley-Lieb harmonics" and "diagonal Temperley-Lieb coinvariant space". We present new results and conjectures concerning these spaces, as well as the space obtained as the quotient of the ring of diagonal Temperley-Lieb invariants by the ideal generated by constant term free diagonally symmetric invariants. We also describe how the space of diagonal Temperley-Lieb invariants affords a natural graded Hopf algebra structure, for n going to infinity. We finally show how this last space and its graded dual Hopf algebra are related to the well known Hopf algebras of symmetric functions, quasi-symmetric functions and noncommutative symmetric functions.

Enriched homology and cohomology modules of simplicial complexes
Published in J. Algebraic Combinatorics 25 (2007), no. 3, p. 285-307 • View Publication • BIB
For a simplicial complex X on {1,2, ..., n} we define enriched homology and cohomology modules. They are graded modules over k[x_1, ..., x_n] whose ranks are equal to the dimensions of the reduced homology and cohomology groups. We characterize Cohen-Macaulay, l-Cohen-Macaulay, Buchsbaum, and Gorenstein* complexes X, and also orientable manifolds in terms of the enriched modules. We introduce the notion of girth for simplicial complexes and make a conjecture relating the girth to invariants of the simplicial complex. We also put strong vanishing conditions on the enriched homology modules and describe the simplicial complexes we then get. They are block designs and include Steiner systems S(c,d,n) and cyclic polytopes of even dimension.

Higher order peak algebras
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 9:4 (2005), 411-430 • View Publication • BIB
Using the theory of noncommutative symmetric functions, we introduce the higher order peak algebras, a sequence of graded Hopf algebras which contain the descent algebra and the usual peak algebra as initial cases (N = 1 and N = 2). We compute their Hilbert series, introduce and study several combinatorial bases, and establish various algebraic identities related to the multisection of formal power series with noncommutative coefficients.

Word Hopf algebras
Two important generalizations of the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions are the Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions and its graded dual the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions. A common generalization of the latter is the selfdual Hopf algebra of permutations (MPR Hopf algebra). This latter Hopf algebra can be seen as a Hopf algebra of endomorphisms of a Hopf algebra. That turns out to be a fruitful way of looking at things and gives rise to wide ranging further generalizations such as the word Hopf algebra and the double word Hopf algebra (and many more).

A Broken Circuit Ring
Given a matroid M represented by a linear subspace L in n-space (equivalently by an arrangement of n hyperplanes in L), we define a graded ring R(L) which degenerates to the Stanley-Reisner ring of the broken circuit complex for any choice of ordering of the ground set. In particular, R(L) is Cohen-Macaulay, and may be used to compute the h-vector of the broken circuit complex of M. We give a geometric interpretation of Spec R(L), as well as a stratification indexed by the flats of M.

Hopf algebras, from basics to applications to renormalization
Published in Comptes Rendus des Rencontres Mathematiques de Glanon 2001 (published in 2003) • Search Publication
An extended version of a series of lectures given at Bogota in december 2002. It consists in a presentation of some aspects of Connes' and Kreimer's work on renormalization in the context of general connected Hopf algebras, in particular Birkhoff decomposition and, in the graded case, the scattering-type formula.

Canonical characters on quasi-symmetric functions and bivariate Catalan numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
Every character on a graded connected Hopf algebra decomposes uniquely as a product of an even character and an odd character (Aguiar, Bergeron, and Sottile, math.CO/0310016). We obtain explicit formulas for the even and odd parts of the universal character on the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions. They can be described in terms of Legendre's beta function evaluated at half-integers, or in terms of bivariate Catalan numbers: $$ C(m,n)=\frac{(2m)!(2n)!}{m!(m+n)!n!}. $$ Properties of characters and of quasi-symmetric functions are then used to derive several interesting identities among bivariate Catalan numbers and in particular among Catalan numbers and central binomial coefficients.

Representation theory of the 0-Ariki-Koike-Shoji algebras
We investigate the representation theory of certain specializations of the Ariki-Koike algebras, obtained by setting $q=0$ in a suitably normalized version of Shoji's presentation. We classify the simple and projective modules, and describe restrictions, induction products, Cartan invariants and decomposition matrices. This allows us to identify the Grothendieck rings of the towers of algebras in terms of certain graded Hopf algebras known as the Mantaci-Reutenauer descent algebras, and Poirier Quasi-symmetric functions.

Sign-graded posets, unimodality of $W$-polynomials and the Charney-Davis Conjecture
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 11 (2004/06), no. 2, Research Paper 9, 15 pp. (electronic) • View Publication • BIB
We generalize the notion of graded posets to what we call sign-graded (labeled) posets. We prove that the $W$-polynomial of a sign-graded poset is symmetric and unimodal. This extends a recent result of Reiner and Welker who proved it for graded posets by associating a simplicial polytopal sphere to each graded poset $P$. By proving that the $W$-polynomials of sign-graded posets has the right sign at -1, we are able to prove the Charney-Davis Conjecture for these spheres (whenever they are flag).

Graded left modular lattices are supersolvable
Published • View Publication • BIB
We provide a direct proof that a finite graded lattice with a maximal chain of left modular elements is supersolvable. This result was first established via a detour through EL-labellings in [McNamara-Thomas] by combining results of McNamara and Liu. As part of our proof, we show that the maximum graded quotient of the free product of a chain and a single-element lattice is finite and distributive.

Generalized Green functions and graded Hecke algebras
We state a conjecture which gives a combinatorial parametrization of the irreducible tempered representations with real central character of a graded Hecke algebra with unequal labels, associated to a root sytem of type B or C. This conjecture is based on a combinatorial generalization of the Springer correspondence in the classical (equal label) case. In particular, the described modules turn out to have a natural grading for the action of W_0, and are completely determined by their central character together with the W_0-representation in the top degree. This latter is an irreducible W_0-character which we call Springer correspondent.

Classification of Ding's Schubert varieties: finer rook equivalence
Published in Canadian J. Math. 59, no. 1 (2007), 36-62 • View Publication • BIB
K. Ding studied a class of Schubert varieties X_λin type A partial flag manifolds, corresponding to integer partitions λand in bijection with dominant permutations. He observed that the Schubert cell structure of X_λis indexed by maximal rook placements on the Ferrers board B_λ, and that the integral cohomology groups H^*(X_λ; Zz), H^*(X_μ; Zz) are additively isomorphic exactly when the Ferrers boards B_λ, B_μsatisfy the combinatorial condition of rook-equivalence. We classify the varieties X_λup to isomorphism, distinguishing them by their graded cohomology rings with integer coefficients. The crux of our approach is studying the nilpotence orders of linear forms in the cohomology ring.

Cocommutative Hopf algebras of permutations and trees
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 22 (2005), Number 4, pp. 451--470. • View Publication • BIB
Consider the coradical filtrations of the Hopf algebras of planar binary trees of Loday and Ronco and of permutations of Malvenuto and Reutenauer. We give explicit isomorphisms showing that the associated graded Hopf algebras are dual to the cocommutative Hopf algebras introduced in the late 1980's by Grossman and Larson. These Hopf algebras are constructed from ordered trees and heap-ordered trees, respectively. These results follow from the fact that whenever one starts from a Hopf algebra that is a cofree graded coalgebra, the associated graded Hopf algebra is a shuffle Hopf algebra.

The Rogers-Selberg recursions, the Gordon-Andrews identities and intertwining operators
Published in RamanujanJ.12:379-397,2006 • View Publication • BIB
Using the theory of intertwining operators for vertex operator algebras we show that the graded dimensions of the principal subspaces associated to the standard modules for $\hat{\goth{sl}(2)}$ satisfy certain classical recursion formulas of Rogers and Selberg. These recursions were exploited by Andrews in connection with Gordon's generalization of the Rogers--Ramanujan identities and with Andrews' related identities. The present work generalizes the authors' previous work on intertwining operators and the Rogers--Ramanujan recursion.

Combinatorial Hopf algebras and generalized Dehn-Sommerville relations
Published in Compositio Mathematica, 142, January 2006, 1--30 • View Publication • BIB
A combinatorial Hopf algebra is a graded connected Hopf algebra over a field $F$ equipped with a character (multiplicative linear functional) $ζ:H\to F$. We show that the terminal object in the category of combinatorial Hopf algebras is the algebra $QSym$ of quasi-symmetric functions; this explains the ubiquity of quasi-symmetric functions as generating functions in combinatorics. We illustrate this with several examples. We prove that every character decomposes uniquely as a product of an even character and an odd character. Correspondingly, every combinatorial Hopf algebra $(H,ζ)$ possesses two canonical Hopf subalgebras on which the character $ζ$ is even (respectively, odd). The odd subalgebra is defined by certain canonical relations which we call the generalized Dehn-Sommerville relations. We show that, for $H=QSym$, the generalized Dehn-Sommerville relations are the Bayer-Billera relations and the odd subalgebra is the peak Hopf algebra of Stembridge. We prove that $QSym$ is the product (in the categorical sense) of its even and odd Hopf subalgebras. We also calculate the odd subalgebras of various related combinatorial Hopf algebras: the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations, the Loday-Ronco Hopf algebra of planar binary trees, the Hopf algebras of symmetric functions and of non-commutative symmetric functions.

When does the associated graded Lie algebra of an arrangement group decompose?
Published in Commentarii Mathematici Helvetici 81 (2006), no. 4, 859-875 • View Publication • BIB
Let \A be a complex hyperplane arrangement, with fundamental group G and holonomy Lie algebra \H. Suppose \H_3 is a free abelian group of minimum possible rank, given the values the Möbius function μ: Ł_2\to \Z takes on the rank 2 flats of \A. Then the associated graded Lie algebra of G decomposes (in degrees 2 and higher) as a direct product of free Lie algebras. In particular, the ranks of the lower central series quotients of the group are given by φ_r(G)=\sum_{X\in Ł_2} φ_r(F_{μ(X)}), for r\ge 2. We illustrate this new Lower Central Series formula with several families of examples.

Toric Initial Ideals of $Δ$-Normal Configurations: Cohen-Macaulayness and Degree Bounds
A normal (respectively, graded normal) vector configuration $A$ defines the toric ideal $I_A$ of a normal (respectively, projectively normal) toric variety. These ideals are Cohen-Macaulay, and when $A$ is normal and graded, $I_A$ is generated in degree at most the dimension of $I_A$. Based on this, Sturmfels asked if these properties extend to initial ideals -- when $A$ is normal, is there an initial ideal of $I_A$ that is Cohen-Macaulay, and when $A$ is normal and graded, does $I_A$ have a Gröbner basis generated in degree at most $dim(I_A)$ ? In this paper, we answer both questions positively for $Δ$-normal configurations. These are normal configurations that admit a regular triangulation $Δ$ with the property that the subconfiguration in each cell of the triangulation is again normal. Such configurations properly contain among them all vector configurations that admit a regular unimodular triangulation. We construct non-trivial families of both $Δ$-normal and non-$Δ$-normal configurations.
