Beyond Log-Supermodularity: Lower Bounds and the Bethe Partition Function
A recent result has demonstrated that the Bethe partition function always lower bounds the true partition function of binary, log-supermodular graphical models. We demonstrate that these results can be extended to other interesting classes of graphical models that are not necessarily binary or log-supermodular: the ferromagnetic Potts model with a uniform external field and its generalizations and special classes of weighted graph homomorphism problems.

Large regular bipartite graphs with median eigenvalue 1
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications, Volume 449, 15 May 2014, Pages 68-75 • View Publication • BIB
A recent result of one of the authors says that every connected subcubic bipartite graph that is not isomorphic to the Heawood graph has at least one, and in fact a positive proportion of its eigenvalues in the interval [-1,1]. We construct an infinite family of connected cubic bipartite graphs which have no eigenvalues in the open interval (-1,1), thus showing that the interval [-1,1] cannot be replaced by any smaller symmetric subinterval even when allowing any finite number of exceptions. Similar examples with vertices of larger degrees are considered and it is also shown that their eigenvalue distribution has somewhat unusual properties. By taking limits of these graphs, we obtain examples of infinite vertex-transitive r-regular graphs for every r\ge3, whose spectrum consists of points $\pm1$ together with intervals [r-2,r] and [-r,-r+2]. These examples shed some light onto a question communicated by Daniel Lenz and Matthias Keller with motivation in relation to the Baum-Connes conjecture.

Twists of Plücker coordinates as dimer partition functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
The homogeneous coordinate ring of the Grassmannian Gr(k,n) has a cluster structure defined in terms of planar diagrams known as Postnikov diagrams. The cluster corresponding to such a diagram consists entirely of Pluecker coordinates. We introduce a twist map on Gr(k,n), related to the Berenstein-Fomin-Zelevinsky-twist, and give an explicit Laurent expansion for the twist of an arbitrary Pluecker coordinate in terms of the cluster variables associated with a fixed Postnikov diagram. The expansion arises as a (scaled) dimer partition function of a weighted version of the bipartite graph dual to the Postnikov diagram, modified by a boundary condition determined by the Pluecker coordinate. We also relate the twist map to a maximal green sequence.
Beyond the Shannon's Bound
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a multigraph of maximum degree $Δ$. The edges of $G$ can be colored with at most $\frac{3}{2}Δ$ colors by Shannon's theorem. We study lower bounds on the size of subgraphs of $G$ that can be colored with $Δ$ colors. Shannon's Theorem gives a bound of $\fracΔ{\lfloor\frac{3}{2}Δ\rfloor}|E|$. However, for $Δ=3$, Kamiński and Kowalik [SWAT'10] showed that there is a 3-edge-colorable subgraph of size at least $\frac{7}{9}|E|$, unless $G$ has a connected component isomorphic to $K_3+e$ (a $K_3$ with an arbitrary edge doubled). Here we extend this line of research by showing that $G$ has a $Δ$-edge colorable subgraph with at least $\fracΔ{\lfloor\frac{3}{2}Δ\rfloor-1}|E|$ edges, unless $Δ$ is even and $G$ contains $\fracΔ{2}K_3$ or $Δ$ is odd and $G$ contains $\frac{Δ-1}{2}K_3+e$. Moreover, the subgraph and its coloring can be found in polynomial time. Our results have applications in approximation algorithms for the Maximum $k$-Edge-Colorable Subgraph problem, where given a graph $G$ (without any bound on its maximum degree or other restrictions) one has to find a $k$-edge-colorable subgraph with maximum number of edges. In particular, for every even $k \ge 4$ we obtain a $\frac{2k+2}{3k+2}$-approximation and for every odd $k\ge 5$ we get a $\frac{2k+1}{3k}$-approximation. When $4\le k \le 13$ this improves over earlier algorithms due to Feige et al. [APPROX'02]

Generalized Spectral Characterization of Graphs: Revisited
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G$ is said to be \textit{determined by its generalized spectrum} (DGS for short) if for any graph $H$, $H$ and $G$ are cospectral with cospectral complements implies that $H$ is isomorphic to $G$. In \cite{WX,WX1}, Wang and Xu gave some methods for determining whether a family of graphs are DGS. In this paper, we shall review some of the old results and present some new ones along this line of research.

Crystal bases as tuples of integer sequences
Published in ISRN Comb. 2013. Article ID 431024, 17p • View Publication • BIB
We describe a set $\mathcal{R}^{\infty}$ consisting of tuples of integer sequences and provide certain explicit maps on it. We show that this defines a semiregular crystal for $\mathfrak{sl}_{n+1}$ and $\mathfrak{sp}_{2n}$ respectively. Furthermore we define for any dominant integral weight $λ$ a connected subcrystal $\mathcal{R}(λ)$ in $\mathcal{R}^{\infty}$, such that this crystal is isomorphic to the crystal graph $B(λ)$. Finally we provide an explicit description of these connected crystals $\mathcal{R}(λ)$.

Sidon Sets and graphs without 4-cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
The problem of determining the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph that does not contain a 4-cycle has a rich history in extremal graph theory. Using Sidon sets constructed by Bose and Chowla, for each odd prime power $q$ we construct a graph with $q^2 - q - 2$ vertices that does not contain a 4-cycle and has at least $\frac{1}{2}q^3 - q^2 - O(q^{3/4})$ edges. This disproves a conjecture of Abreu, Balbuena, and Labbate concerning the Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(q^2 - q - 2, C_4)$.

Convexity in partial cubes: the hull number
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that the combinatorial optimization problem of determining the hull number of a partial cube is NP-complete. This makes partial cubes the minimal graph class for which NP-completeness of this problem is known and improves some earlier results in the literature. On the other hand we provide a polynomial-time algorithm to determine the hull number of planar partial cube quadrangulations. Instances of the hull number problem for partial cubes described include poset dimension and hitting sets for interiors of curves in the plane. To obtain the above results, we investigate convexity in partial cubes and characterize these graphs in terms of their lattice of convex subgraphs, improving a theorem of Handa. Furthermore we provide a topological representation theorem for planar partial cubes, generalizing a result of Fukuda and Handa about rank three oriented matroids.
Maker-Breaker games on random geometric graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In a Maker-Breaker game on a graph $G$, Breaker and Maker alternately claim edges of $G$. Maker wins if, after all edges have been claimed, the graph induced by his edges has some desired property. We consider four Maker-Breaker games played on random geometric graphs. For each of our four games we show that if we add edges between $n$ points chosen uniformly at random in the unit square by order of increasing edge-length then, with probability tending to one as $n\to\infty$, the graph becomes Maker-win the very moment it satisfies a simple necessary condition. In particular, with high probability, Maker wins the connectivity game as soon as the minimum degree is at least two; Maker wins the Hamilton cycle game as soon as the minimum degree is at least four; Maker wins the perfect matching game as soon as the minimum degree is at least two and every edge has at least three neighbouring vertices; and Maker wins the $H$-game as soon as there is a subgraph from a finite list of "minimal graphs". These results also allow us to give precise expressions for the limiting probability that $G(n,r)$ is Maker-win in each case, where $G(n,r)$ is the graph on $n$ points chosen uniformly at random on the unit square with an edge between two points if and only if their distance is at most $r$.

The Dilworth Number of Auto-Chordal-Bipartite Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The mirror (or bipartite complement) mir(B) of a bipartite graph B=(X,Y,E) has the same color classes X and Y as B, and two vertices x in X and y in Y are adjacent in mir(B) if and only if xy is not in E. A bipartite graph is chordal bipartite if none of its induced subgraphs is a chordless cycle with at least six vertices. In this paper, we deal with chordal bipartite graphs whose mirror is chordal bipartite as well; we call these graphs auto-chordal bipartite graphs (ACB graphs for short). We describe the relationship to some known graph classes such as interval and strongly chordal graphs and we present several characterizations of ACB graphs. We show that ACB graphs have unbounded Dilworth number, and we characterize ACB graphs with Dilworth number k.

Flag algebras and the stable coefficients of the Jones polynomial
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the structure of the stable coefficients of the Jones polynomial of an alternating link. We start by identifying the first four stable coefficients with polynomial invariants of a (reduced) Tait graph of the link projection. This leads us to introduce a free polynomial algebra of invariants of graphs whose elements give invariants of alternating links which strictly refine the first four stable coefficients. We conjecture that all stable coefficients are elements of this algebra, and give experimental evidence for the fifth and sixth stable coefficient. We illustrate our results in tables of all alternating links with at most 10 crossings and all irreducible planar graphs with at most 6 vertices.
Tropical mirror symmetry for elliptic curves
Published in J. Reine Angew. Math. (Crelles Journal), Vol. 2017, Issue 732, 211-246 • View Publication • BIB
Mirror symmetry relates Gromov-Witten invariants of an elliptic curve with certain integrals over Feynman graphs. We prove a tropical generalization of mirror symmetry for elliptic curves, i.e., a statement relating certain labeled Gromov-Witten invariants of a tropical elliptic curve to more refined Feynman integrals. This result easily implies the tropical analogue of the mirror symmetry statement mentioned above and, using the necessary Correspondence Theorem, also the mirror symmetry statement itself. In this way, our tropical generalization leads to an alternative proof of mirror symmetry for elliptic curves. We believe that our approach via tropical mirror symmetry naturally carries the potential of being generalized to more adventurous situations of mirror symmetry. Moreover, our tropical approach has the advantage that all involved invariants are easy to compute. Furthermore, we can use the techniques for computing Feynman integrals to prove that they are quasimodular forms. Also, as a side product, we can give a combinatorial characterization of Feynman graphs for which the corresponding integrals are zero. More generally, the tropical mirror symmetry theorem gives a natural interpretation of the A-model side (i.e., the generating function of Gromov-Witten invariants) in terms of a sum over Feynman graphs. Hence our quasimodularity result becomes meaningful on the A-model side as well. Our theoretical results are complemented by a Singular package including several procedures that can be used to compute Hurwitz numbers of the elliptic curve as integrals over Feynman graphs.

Nonparametric graphon estimation
We propose a nonparametric framework for the analysis of networks, based on a natural limit object termed a graphon. We prove consistency of graphon estimation under general conditions, giving rates which include the important practical setting of sparse networks. Our results cover dense and sparse stochastic blockmodels with a growing number of classes, under model misspecification. We use profile likelihood methods, and connect our results to approximation theory, nonparametric function estimation, and the theory of graph limits.

Bounds for the spectral radius of nonnegative matrices
Published in R. Xing, B. Zhou, Sharp bounds for the spectral radius of nonnegative matrices, Linear Algebra Appl. 449 (2014) 194-209 • View Publication • BIB
We give upper and lower bounds for the spectral radius of a nonnegative matrix by using its average 2-row sums, and characterize the equality cases if the matrix is irreducible. We also apply these bounds to various nonnegative matrices associated with a graph, including the adjacency matrix, the signless Laplacian matrix, the distance matrix, the distance signless Laplacian matrix, and the reciprocal distance matrix.

Groups having complete bipartite divisor graphs for their conjugacy class sizes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a finite group G, the bipartite divisor graph for its conjugacy class sizes is the bipartite graph with bipartition consisting of the set of conjugacy class sizes of G-Z (where Z denotes the centre of G) and the set of prime numbers that divide these conjugacy class sizes, and with {p,n} being an edge if gcd(p,n)\neq 1. In this paper we construct infinitely many groups whose bipartite divisor graph for their conjugacy class sizes is the complete bipartite graph K_{2,5}, giving a solution to a question of Taeri.

On the cohomology of real Grassmann manifolds
We give an explicit and simple construction of the incidence graph for the integral cohomology of real Grassmann manifold Gr(k,n) in terms of the Young diagrams filled with the letter q in checkered pattern. It turns out that there are two types of graphs, one for the trivial coefficients and other for the twisted coefficients, and they compute the homology groups of the orientable and non-orientable cases of Gr(k,n) via the Poincaré-Verdier duality. We also give an explicit formula of the Poincaré polynomial for Gr(k,n) and show that the Poincaré polynomial is also related to the number of points on Gr(k,n) over a finite field {F}_q with q being a power of prime which is also used in the Young diagrams.
Edge-signed graphs with smallest eigenvalue greater than -2
Published in J. Combin. Theory, Ser. B 110 (2015), pp. 90--111 • View Publication • BIB
We give a structural classification of edge-signed graphs with smallest eigenvalue greater than -2. We prove a conjecture of Hoffman about the smallest eigenvalue of the line graph of a tree that was stated in the 1970s. Furthermore, we prove a more general result extending Hoffman's original statement to all edge-signed graphs with smallest eigenvalue greater than -2. Our results give a classification of the special graphs of fat Hoffman graphs with smallest eigenvalue greater than -3.

Signed tree associahedra
Published • View Publication • BIB
An associahedron is a polytope whose vertices correspond to the triangulations of a convex polygon and whose edges correspond to flips between them. A particularly elegant realization of the associahedron, due to S. Shnider and S. Sternberg and popularized by J.-L. Loday, has been generalized in two directions: on the one hand by A. Postnikov to obtain a realization of the graph associahedra of M. Carr and S. Devadoss, and on the other hand by C. Hohlweg and C. Lange to obtain multiple realizations of the associahedron parametrized by a sequence of signs. The goal of this paper is to unify and extend these two constructions to signed tree associahedra. We define the notions of signed tubes and signed nested sets on a vertex-signed tree, generalizing the classical notions of tubes and nested sets for unsigned trees. The resulting signed nested complexes are all simplicial spheres, but they are not necessarily isomorphic, even if they arise from signed trees with the same underlying unsigned structure. We then construct a signed tree associahedron realizing the signed nested complex, obtained by removing certain well-chosen facets from the classical permutahedron. We study relevant properties of its normal fan and of certain orientations of its 1-skeleton, in connection to the braid arrangement and to the weak order. Our main tool, both for combinatorial and geometric perspectives, is the notion of spines on a vertex-signed tree, which extend the families of Schröder and binary search trees.

On planar right groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 1896 Heinrich Maschke characterized planar finite groups, that is groups which admit a generating system such that the resulting Cayley graph is planar. In our study we consider the question, which finite semigroups have a planar Cayley graph. Right groups are a class of semigroups relatively close to groups. We present a complete characterization of planar right groups.

Odd K_3,3 subdivisions in bipartite graphs
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 118 (2016), 76-87 • View Publication • BIB
We prove that every internally 4-connected non-planar bipartite graph has an odd K_3,3 subdivision; that is, a subgraph obtained from K_3,3 by replacing its edges by internally disjoint odd paths with the same ends. The proof gives rise to a polynomial-time algorithm to find such a subdivision. (A bipartite graph G is internally 4-connected if it is 3-connected, has at least five vertices, and there is no partition (A,B,C) of V(G) such that |A|,|B|>1, |C|=3 and G has no edge with one end in A and the other in B.)
