Mixing times of a Burnside process Markov chain on set partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $X$ be a finite set and let $G$ be a finite group acting on $X$. The group action splits $X$ into disjoint orbits. The Burnside process is a Markov chain on $X$ which has a uniform stationary distribution when the chain is lumped to orbits. We consider the case where $X = [k]^n$ with $k \geq n$ and $G = S_k$ is the symmetric group on $[k]$, such that $G$ acts on $X$ by permuting the value of each coordinate. The resulting Burnside process gives a novel algorithm for sampling a set partition of $[n]$ uniformly at random. We obtain bounds on the mixing time and show that the chain is rapidly mixing. For the case $k < n$, the algorithm corresponds to sampling a set partition of $[n]$ with at most $k$ blocks, and we obtain a mixing time bound which is independent of $n$. Along the way, we obtain explicit formulas for the transition probabilities and bounds on the second largest eigenvalue for both the original process and the lumped chain.

Braid group action on extended crystals
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the paper, we prove that there exists a braid group action on the extended crystal $\widehat{B}(\infty)$ of finite type. The extended crystal $\widehat{B}(\infty)$ and its braid group action are investigated from the viewpoint of crystal similarity. We then interpret the braid group action on $\widehat{B}(\infty)$ in the Hernandez-Leclerc category $\mathscr{C}_\mathfrak{g}^0$.

The Terwilliger algebra of the Odd graph revisited from the viewpoint of group action
Let $O_{m+1}$ denote the Odd graph on a set of cardinality $2m+1$, where $m$ is a positive integer. Denote by $X$ its vertex set and by $T:=T(x_0)$ its Terwilliger algebra with respect to any fixed vertex $x_0\in X$. In this paper, we first prove that $T$ coincides with the centralizer algebra of the stabilizer of $x_0$ in the automorphism group of $O_{m+1}$ by considering the action of this automorphism group on $X\times X\times X$. Then we give the decomposition of $T$ for $m\geq 3$ by using all the homogeneous components of $V:=\mathbb{C}^X$, each of which is a nonzero subspace of $V$ spanned by the irreducible $T$-modules that are isomorphic. Finally, we display an orthogonal basis for every homogeneous component of $V$.
A survey on association schemes on triples
Published • View PublicationBIB
Association schemes on triples (ASTs) are ternary analogues of classical association schemes, whose relations and adjacency algebras are ternary instead of binary. We provide a survey of the current progress in the study of ASTs, highlighting open questions, suggesting research directions, and producing some related results. We review properties of the ternary adjacency algebras of ASTs, ASTs whose relations are invariant under some group action, and ASTs obtained from 2-designs and two-graphs. We also provide a notion of fusion and fission ASTs, using the AST obtained from the affine special linear group $ASL(2,q)$ as an example.
Crystal invariant theory II: Pseudo-energies
The geometric crystal operators and geometric $R$-matrices (or geometric Weyl group actions) give commuting actions on the field of rational functions in $mn$ variables. We study the invariants of various combinations of these actions, which we view as "crystal analogues" of the invariants of $S_m$, ${\rm SL}_m$, $S_n \times S_m$, ${\rm SL}_n \times \, S_m$, and ${\rm SL}_n \times {\rm SL}_m$ acting on the polynomial ring in an $m \times n$ matrix of variables. The polynomial invariants of the $S_m$-action generated by the ${\rm GL}_m$-geometric $R$-matrices were described by Lam and the third-named author as the ring of loop symmetric functions. In a previous paper of the authors, the polynomial invariants of the ${\rm GL}_m$-geometric crystal operators were described as a subring of the ring of loop symmetric functions. In this paper, we give conjectural generating sets for the fields of rational invariants in the remaining cases, and we give formulas expressing a large class of loop symmetric functions in terms of these conjectural generators. Our results include new positive formulas for the central charge and energy function of a product of single-row geometric crystals, and a new derivation of Kirillov and Berenstein's piecewise-linear formula for cocharge. The formulas manifest the symmetries possessed by these functions.

Techniques in equivariant Ehrhart theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
Equivariant Ehrhart theory generalizes the study of lattice point enumeration to also account for the symmetries of a polytope under a linear group action. We present a catalogue of techniques with applications in this field, including zonotopal decompositions, symmetric triangulations, combinatorial interpretation of the $h^\ast$-polynomial, and certificates for the (non)existence of invariant non-degenerate hypersurfaces. We apply these methods to several families of examples including hypersimplices, orbit polytopes, and graphic zonotopes, expanding the library of polytopes for which their equivariant Ehrhart theory is known.

Comparing the number of infected vertices in two symmetric sets for Bernoulli percolation (and other random partitions)
For Bernoulli percolation on a given graph $G = (V,E)$ we consider the cluster of some fixed vertex $o \in V$. We aim at comparing the number of vertices of this cluster in the set $V_+$ and in the set $V_-$, where $V_+,V_- \subset V$ have the same size. Intuitively, if $V_-$ is further away from $o$ than $V_+$, it should contain fewer vertices of the cluster. We prove such a result in terms of stochastic domination, provided that $o \in V_+$, and $V_+,V_-$ satisfy some strong symmetry conditions, and we give applications of this result in case $G$ is a bunkbed graph, a layered graph, the 2D square lattice or a hypercube graph. Our result only relies on general probabilistic techniques and a combinatorial result on group actions, and thus extends to fairly general random partitions, e.g. as induced by Bernoulli site percolation or the random cluster model.

The minimal dimension of a sphere with an equivariant embedding of the bouquet of $g$ circles is $2g-1$
Published • View PublicationBIB
To embed the bouquet of $g$ circles $B_g$ into the $n$-sphere $S^n$ so that its full symmetry group action extends to an orthogonal actions on $S^n$, the minimal $n$ is $2g-1$. This answers a question raised by B. Zimmermann.

Realization of zero-divisor graphs of finite commutative rings as threshold graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let R be a finite commutative ring with unity, and let G = (V, E) be a simple graph. The zero-divisor graph, denoted by Γ(R) is a simple graph with vertex set as R, and two vertices x, y \in R are adjacent in Γ(R) if and only if $xy = 0$. In [10], the authors have studied the Laplacian eigenvalues of the graph Γ(Z_n) and for distinct proper divisors d_1, d_2, \dots, d_k of n, they defined the sets as, A_{d_i} = {x \in Zn : (x, n) = d_i}, where (x, n) denotes the greatest common divisor of x and n. In this paper, we show that the sets A_{d_i}, 1 \leq i \leq k are actually orbits of the group action: Aut(Γ(R)) \times R \longrightarrow R, where Aut(Γ(R)) denotes the automorphism group of Γ(R). Our main objective is to determine new classes of threshold graphs, since these graphs play an important role in several applied areas. For a reduced ring R, we prove that Γ(R) is a connected threshold graph if and only if R = F_q or R = F_2 \times F_q. We provide classes of threshold graphs realized by some classes of local rings. Finally, we characterize all finite commutative rings with unity of which zero-divisor graphs are not threshold.

Computing equivalence classes of finite group actions on orientable surfaces: A dynamic survey
This paper focuses on the classification of classes of topological equivalence of finite group actions on Riemann surfaces. By the Riemann-Hurwitz bound, there are just finitely many groups that act conformally on a closed orientable surface $\mathcal{S}_g$ of genus $g\geq 2$. With each such action of a group $\mathrm{G}$ on $\mathcal{S}_g$ one can associate the fundamental group $Γ=π(\mathcal{O})$ of the quotient orbifold $\mathcal{O}=\mathcal{S}_g/\mathrm{G}$, isomorphic to a Fuchsian group determined completely by orbifold's signature. The Riemann existence theorem reduces the problem of the existence of an action of $\mathrm{G}$ on $\mathcal{S}_g$ to a purely group-theoretical problem of deciding whether there is an smooth epimorphism mapping the Fuchsian group $Γ$ onto the group $\mathrm{G}$. Using computer algebra systems such as \textsc{Magma} or GAP, together with the library of small groups, the generation of all finite group actions on a surface of fixed small genus $g\geq 2$ becomes almost a routine procedure. The difficult part is to determine the classes of these actions with respect to topological equivalence. To achieve this, one needs to investigate the action of the automorphism group of a Fuchsian group on the set of finite group actions on $\mathcal{S}_g$ with the corresponding signature. In this paper we derive several results on the topological equivalence of finite group actions on Riemann surfaces. As an application, we derive complete lists of finite group actions of genus $g\leq 9$ distinguished up to the topological equivalence. A summary of the actions can be found in Appendix, the reader interested in more details is referred to the web page [22]. It is expected that we will be able to extend the list to higher genera, refreshed partial results are available on the web page. The following text is an extended version of the paper [23].

Representations on the cohomology of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$
The moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$ of $n$ pointed stable curves of genus $0$ admits an action of the symmetric group $S_n$ by permuting the marked points. We provide a closed formula for the character of the $S_n$-action on the cohomology of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$. This is achieved by studying wall crossings of the moduli spaces of quasimaps which provide us with a new inductive construction of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$, equivariant with respect to the symmetric group action. Moreover we prove that $H^{2k}(\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n})$ for $k\le 3$ and $H^{2k}(\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n})\oplus H^{2k-2}(\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n})$ for any $k$ are permutation representations. Our method works for related moduli spaces as well and we provide a closed formula for the character of the $S_n$-representation on the cohomology of the Fulton-MacPherson compactification $\mathbb{P}^1[n]$ of the configuration space of $n$ points on $\mathbb{P}^1$ and more generally on the cohomology of the moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}(\mathbb{P}^{m-1},1)$ of stable maps.
Measurable tilings by abelian group actions
Let $X$ be a measure space with a measure-preserving action $(g,x) \mapsto g \cdot x$ of an abelian group $G$. We consider the problem of understanding the structure of measurable tilings $F \odot A = X$ of $X$ by a measurable tile $A \subset X$ translated by a finite set $F \subset G$ of shifts, thus the translates $f \cdot A$, $f \in F$ partition $X$ up to null sets. Adapting arguments from previous literature, we establish a "dilation lemma" that asserts, roughly speaking, that $F \odot A = X$ implies $F^r \odot A = X$ for a large family of integer dilations $r$, and use this to establish a structure theorem for such tilings analogous to that established recently by the second and fourth authors. As applications of this theorem, we completely classify those random tilings of finitely generated abelian groups that are "factors of iid", and show that measurable tilings of a torus $\mathbb{T}^d$ can always be continuously (in fact linearly) deformed into a tiling with rational shifts, with particularly strong results in the low-dimensional cases $d=1,2$ (in particular resolving a conjecture of Conley, the first author, and Pikhurko in the $d=1$ case).

On the homotopy decomposition for the quotient of a moment-angle complex and its applications
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we prove that the quotient of any real or complex moment-angle complex by any closed subgroup in the naturally acting compact torus on it is equivariantly homotopy equivalent to the homotopy colimit of a certain toric diagram. For any quotient we prove an equivariant homeomorphism generalizing the well-known Davis-Januszkiewicz construction for quasitoric manifolds and small covers. We deduce formality of the corresponding Borel construction space under the natural assumption on the group action in the complex case leading to the new description of the equivariant cohomology for the quotients by any coordinate subgroups. We prove the weak Toral Rank Conjecture for any partial quotient by the diagonal circle action. We give an explicit construction of partial quotients by circle actions having arbitrary torsion in integral cohomology.
Association schemes on triples over few vertices
In this paper, we obtain classification results for higher-dimensional analogues of classical association schemes called association schemes on triples (ASTs). We present an algorithm that enumerates all ASTs on a fixed number of vertices whose nontrivial relations are invariant under the action of some group. Applying this algorithm to three, four, and five vertices along with appropriate group actions yields the unique AST over three vertices, the unique symmetric ASTs over four or five vertices, the unique AST over four vertices with two nontrivial relations, and the unique nontrivial circulant AST over five vertices.

On the symmetric group action on rigid disks on a strip
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we decompose the rational homology of the ordered configuration space of $p$ open unit-diameter disks on the infinite strip of width $2$ as a direct sum of induced $S_{n}$-representations. Alpert proved that the $k^{\text{th}}$-integral homology of the ordered configuration space of $n$ open unit-diameter disks on the infinite strip of width $2$ is an FI$_{k+1}$-module by studying certain operations on homology called "high-insertion maps." The integral homology groups $H_{k}(\text{cell}(n,2))$ are free abelian, and Alpert computed a basis for $H_{k}(\text{cell}(n,2))$ as an abelian group. In this paper, we study the rational homology groups as $S_{n}$-representations. We find a new basis for $H_{k}(\text{cell}(n,2);\mathbb{Q}),$ and use this, along with results of Ramos, to give an explicit description of $H_{k}(\text{cell}(n,2);\mathbb{Q})$ as a direct sum of induced $S_{n}$-representations arising from free FI$_{*}$-modules. We use this decomposition to calculate the dimension of the rational homology of the unordered configuration space of $p$ open unit-diameter disks on the infinite strip of width $2$.

Chromatic Quasisymmetric Class Functions for combinatorial Hopf monoids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the chromatic quasisymmetric class function of a linearized combinatorial Hopf monoid. Given a linearized combinatorial Hopf monoid $H$, and an $H$-structure $h$ on a set $N$, there are proper colorings of $h$, generalizing graph colorings and poset partitions. We show that the automorphism group of $h$ acts on the set of proper colorings. The chromatic quasisymmetric class function enumerates the fixed points of this action, weighting each coloring with a monomial. For the Hopf monoid of graphs this invariant generalizes Stanley's chromatic symmetric function and specializes to the orbital chromatic polynomial of Cameron and Kayibi. We also introduce the flag quasisymmetric class function of a balanced relative simplicial complex equipped with a group action. We show that, under certain conditions, the chromatic quasisymmetric class function of $h$ is the flag quasisymmetric class function of a balanced relative simplicial complex that we call the coloring complex of $h$. We use this result to deduce various inequalities for the associated orbital polynomial invariants. We apply these results to several examples related to enumerating graph colorings, poset partitions, generic functions on matroids or generalized permutohedra, and others.

When are symmetric ideals monomial?
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study conditions on polynomials such that the ideal generated by their orbits under the symmetric group action becomes a monomial ideal or has a monomial radical. If the polynomials are homogeneous, we expect that such an ideal has a monomial radical if their coefficients are sufficiently general with respect to their supports. We prove this for instance in the case where some generator contains a power of a variable. Moreover, if the polynomials have only square-free terms and their coefficients do not sum to zero, then in a larger polynomial ring the ideal itself is square-free monomial. This has implications also for symmetric ideals of the infinite polynomial ring.

The computation of the number of unequivalent states of the Rubik's Revenge
After having translated the problem of solving the Rubik's Revenge in terms of group actions, we use the result of the structure of the legal transformations (Larsen) to count the states of the Rubik's Revenge modulo legal and indistinguishable transformations, in the presence and absence of mechanical constraints. We also find by a new method the computation made by Bonzio, Loi and Peruzzi of the probability of being able to solve the Rubik's Revenge after having assembled it randomly, once again in the presence and absence of mechanical constraints.

Counting Gray codes for an improved upper bound of the Grünbaum-Hadwiger-Ramos problem
We give an improved upper bound for the Grünbaum--Hadwiger--Ramos problem: Let $d,n,k \in \mathbb{N}$ such that $d \geq 2^n(1+2^{k-1})$. Given $2^{n+1}$ masses on $\mathbb{R}^d$, there exist $k$ hyperplanes in $\mathbb{R}^d$ that partition it into $2^k$ sets of equal size with respect to all measures. This is an improvement to the previous bound $d \geq 2^{n + k}$ by Mani-Levitska, Vrećica & Živaljević in 2006. This is achieved by classifying the number of certain Gray code patterns modulo 2. The reduction was developed by Blagojević, Frick, Haase & Ziegler in 2016. It utilizes the group action of the symmetric group $(\mathbb{Z}/2)^k \rtimes \mathfrak{S}_k$ of $k$ oriented hyperplanes. If we restrict to the subgroup $(\mathbb{Z}/2)^k$ as Mani-Levitska et al. we retrieve their bound.

On sets of points in general position that lie on a cubic curve in the plane and determine lines that can be pierced by few points
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $P$ be a set of $n$ points in general position in the plane. Let $R$ be a set of points disjoint from $P$ such that for every $x,y \in P$ the line through $x$ and $y$ contains a point in $R$. We show that if $|R| < \frac{3}{2}n$ and $P \cup R$ is contained in a cubic curve $c$ in the plane, then $P$ has a special property with respect to the natural group action on $c$. That is, $P$ is contained in a coset of a subgroup $H$ of $c$ of cardinality at most $|R|$. We use the same approach to show a similar result in the case where each of $B$ and $G$ is a set of $n$ points in general position in the plane and every line through a point in $B$ and a point in $G$ passes through a point in $R$. This provides a partial answer to a problem of Karasev. The bound $|R| < \frac{3}{2}n$ is best possible at least for part of our results. Our extremal constructions provide a counterexample to an old conjecture attributed to Jamison about point sets that determine few directions. Jamison conjectured that if $P$ is a set of $n$ points in general position in the plane that determines at most $2n-c$ distinct directions, then $P$ is contained in an affine image of the set of vertices of a regular $m$-gon. This conjecture of Jamison is strongly related to our results in the case the cubic curve $c$ is reducible and our results can be used to prove Jamison's conjecture at least when $m-n$ is in the order of magnitude of $O(\sqrt{n})$.
