Representability of Matroids by c-Arrangements is Undecidable
Published in Israel Journal of Mathematics (2022) • View PublicationBIB
For a natural number $c$, a $c$-arrangement is an arrangement of dimension $c$ subspaces satisfying the following condition: the sum of any subset of the subspaces has dimension a multiple of $c$. Matroids arising as normalized rank functions of $c$-arrangements are also known as multilinear matroids. We prove that it is algorithmically undecidable whether there exists a $c$ such that a given matroid has a $c$-arrangement representation, or equivalently whether the matroid is multilinear. It follows that certain network coding problems are also undecidable. In the proof, we introduce a generalized Dowling geometry to encode an instance of the uniform word problem for finite groups in matroids of rank three. The $c$-arrangement condition gives rise to some difficulties and their resolution is the main part of the paper.

On the symmetric Gelfand pair $(\mathcal{H}_n\times \mathcal{H}_{n-1},diag (\mathcal{H}_{n-1}))$
Published in Journal of Algebra and its Applications 20(5) (2021) 2150085 • View PublicationBIB
We show that the $\mathcal{H}_{n-1}$-conjugacy classes of $\mathcal{H}_n,$ where $\mathcal{H}_n$ is the hyperoctahedral group on $2n$ elements, are indexed by marked bipartitions of $n.$ This will lead us to prove that $(\mathcal{H}_n\times \mathcal{H}_{n-1},diag (\mathcal{H}_{n-1}))$ is a symmetric Gelfand pair and that the induced representation $1_{diag (\mathcal{H}_{n-1})}^{\mathcal{H}_n\times \mathcal{H}_{n-1}}$ is multiplicity free.

Growth rates of Coxeter groups and Perron numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define a large class of abstract Coxeter groups, that we call $\infty$--spanned, and for which the word growth rate and the geodesic growth rate appear to be Perron numbers. This class contains a fair amount of Coxeter groups acting on hyperbolic spaces, thus corroborating a conjecture by Kellerhals and Perren. We also show that for this class the geodesic growth rate strictly dominates the word growth rate.

Primitive Complete Normal Bases for Regular Extensions: Exceptional Cyclotomic Modules
A primitive completely normal element for an extension $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}/\mathbb{F}_{q}$ of Galois fields is a generator of the multiplicative group of $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$, which simultaneously is normal over every intermediate field of that extension. We are going to prove that such a generator exists when $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}/\mathbb{F}_{q}$ is an 'exceptional' regular extension. In combination with [6] our investigations altogether settle the existence of primitive completely normal bases for any regular extension. An important feature of the class of regular extensions is that they comprise every extension of prime power degree.

Preordered groups and valued fields
We study algebraic, combinatorial and topological properties of the set of preorders on a group, and the set of valuations on a field. We show strong analogies between these two kinds of sets and develop a dictionary for these ones. Among the results we make a detailed study of the set of preorders on $\mathbb Z^n$. We also prove that the set of valuations on a countable field of transcendence degree at least 2 is an ultrametric Cantor set.

Topological embeddings into random 2-complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider 2-dimensional random simplicial complexes $Y$ in the multi-parameter model. We establish the multi-parameter threshold for the property that every 2-dimensional simplicial complex $S$ admits a topological embedding into $Y$ asymptotically almost surely. Namely, if in the procedure of the multi-parameter model, each $i$-dimensional simplex is taken independently with probability $p_i=p_i(n)$, from a set of $n$ vertices, then the threshold is $p_0 p_1^3 p_2^2 = \frac{1}{n}$. This threshold happens to coincide with the previously established thresholds for uniform hyperbolicity and triviality of the fundamental group. Our claim in one direction is in fact slightly stronger, namely, we show that if $p_0 p_1^3 p_2^2$ is sufficiently larger than $\frac{1}{n}$ then every $S$ has a fixed subdivision $S'$ which admits a simplicial embedding into $Y$ asymptotically almost surely. The main geometric result we prove to this end is that given $ε>0$, there is a subdivision $S'$ of $S$ such that every subcomplex $T \subseteq S'$ has $\frac{f_0(T)}{f_1(T)}>\frac{1}{3}-ε$ and $\frac{f_0(T)}{f_2(T)}>\frac{1}{2}-ε$, where $f_i(T)$ denotes the number of simplices in $T$ of dimension $i$. In the other direction we show that if $p_0 p_1^3 p_2^2$ is sufficiently smaller than $\frac{1}{n}$, then asymptotically almost surely, the torus does not admit a topological embedding into $Y$. Here we use a result of Z. Gao which bounds the number of different triangulations of a surface.

Numerical semigroups, polyhedra, and posets I: the group cone
Published in Combinatorial Theory 1 (2021), #19 • View PublicationBIB
Several recent papers have explored families of rational polyhedra whose integer points are in bijection with certain families of numerical semigroups. One such family, first introduced by Kunz, has integer points in bijection with numerical semigroups of fixed multiplicity, and another, introduced by Hellus and Waldi, has integer points corresponding to oversemigroups of numerical semigroups with two generators. In this paper, we provide a combinatorial framework from which to study both families of polyhedra. We introduce a new family of polyhedra called group cones, each constructed from some finite abelian group, from which both of the aforementioned families of polyhedra are directly determined but that are more natural to study from a standpoint of polyhedral geometry. We prove that the faces of group cones are naturally indexed by a family of finite posets, and illustrate how this combinatorial data relates to semigroups living in the corresponding faces of the other two families of polyhedra.

Two infinite families of chiral polytopes of type \{4,4,4\} with solvable automorphism groups
We construct two infinite families of locally toroidal chiral polytopes of type $\{4,4,4\}$, with $1024m^2$ and $2048m^2$ automorphisms for every positive integer $m$, respectively. The automorphism groups of these polytopes are solvable groups, and when $m$ is a power of $2$, they provide examples with automorphism groups of order $2^n$ where $n$ can be any integer greater than $9$. (On the other hand, no chiral polytopes of type $[4,4,4]$ exist for $n \leq 9$.) In particular, our two families give a partial answer to a problem proposed by Schulte and Weiss in [Problems on polytopes, their groups, and realizations, {\em Periodica Math.\ Hungarica\} 53 (2006), 231-255].

Asymptotic dimension of multi-ended quasi-transitive graphs
We prove the existence of an upper bound on the asymptotic dimension of tree amalgamations of locally finite quasi-transitive connected graphs. This generalises a result of Dranishnikov for free products with amalgamation and a result of Tselekidis for HNN-extensions of groups to tree amalgamations of graphs. As a corollary, we obtain an upper bound on the asymptotic dimension of a multi-ended quasi-transitive locally finite graph based on any of their factorisations.

Infinite Paley graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Infinite analogues of the Paley graphs are constructed, based on uncountably many infinite but locally finite fields. Weil's estimate for character sums shows that they are all isomorphic to the random or universal graph of Erd\H os, Rényi and Rado. Automorphism groups and connections with model theory are considered.

A new algorithm to classify chiral polytopes with a given automorphism group
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a new algorithm to compute all the chiral polytopes that have a given group $G$ as full automorphism group. This algorithm uses a new set of generators that characterize the group, all of them except one being involutions. It permits to compute all chiral polytopes of groups that were previously unreachable by other known algorithms.
Small toric resolutions of toric varieties of string polytopes with small indices
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a semisimple algebraic group over $\mathbb{C}$. For a reduced word $\bf i$ of the longest element in the Weyl group of $G$ and a dominant integral weight $λ$, one can construct the string polytope $Δ_{\bf i}(λ)$, whose lattice points encode the character of the irreducible representation $V_λ$. The string polytope $Δ_{\bf i}(λ)$ is singular in general and combinatorics of string polytopes heavily depends on the choice of $\mathbf i$. In this paper, we study combinatorics of string polytopes when $G = SL_{n+1}(\mathbb{C})$, and present a sufficient condition on $\mathbf i$ such that the toric variety $X_{Δ_{\mathbf i}(λ)}$ of the string polytope $Δ_{\mathbf i}(λ)$ has a small toric resolution. Indeed, when $\mathbf i$ has small indices and $λ$ is regular, we explicitly construct a small toric resolution of the toric variety $X_{Δ_{\bf i}(λ)}$ using a Bott manifold. Our main theorem implies that a toric variety of any string polytope admits a small toric resolution when $n < 4$. As a byproduct, we show that if $\mathbf i$ has small indices then $Δ_{\mathbf i}(λ)$ is integral for any dominant integral weight $λ$, which in particular implies that the anticanonical limit toric variety $X_{Δ_{\bf i}(λ_P)}$ of a partial flag variety $G/P$ is Gorenstein Fano. Furthermore, we apply our result to symplectic topology of the full flag manifold $G/B$ and obtain a formula of the disk potential of the Lagrangian torus fibration on $G/B$ obtained from a flat toric degeneration of $G/B$ to the toric variety $X_{Δ_{\bf i}(λ)}$.

Uniform Local Amenability implies Property A
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this short note we answer a query of Brodzki, Niblo, Špakula, Willett and Wright by showing that all bounded degree uniformly locally amenable graphs have Property A. For the second result of the note recall that Kaiser proved that if $Γ$ is a finitely generated group and $\{H_i\}^\infty_{i=1}$ is a Farber sequence of finite index subgroups, then the associated Schreier graph sequence is of Property A if and only if the group is amenable. We show however, that there exist a non-amenable group and a nested sequence of finite index subgroups $\{H_i\}^\infty_{i=1}$ such that $\cap H=\{e_Γ\}$, and the associated Schreier graph sequence is of Property A.

Symmetric designs and projective special unitary groups of dimension at most five
In this article, we study symmetric $(v, k, λ)$ designs admitting a flag-transitive and point-primitive automorphism group $G$ whose socle is a projective special unitary group of dimension at most five. We, in particular, determine all such possible parameters $(v, k, λ)$ and show that there exist eight non-isomorphic of such designs for which $λ\in\{3,6,12, 16, 18\}$ and $G$ is $PSU_{3}(3)$, $PSU_{3}(3):2$, $PSU_{4}(2)$ or $PSU_{4}(2):2$.

A generalization of combinatorial identities for stable discrete series constants
Published • View PublicationBIB
This article is concerned with the constants that appear in Harish-Chandra's character formula for stable discrete series of real reductive groups, although it does not require any knowledge about real reductive groups or discrete series. In Harish-Chandra's work the only information we have about these constants is that they are uniquely determined by an inductive property. Later Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson and Herb gave different formulas for these constants. In this article we generalize these formulas to the case of arbitrary finite Coxeter groups (in this setting, discrete series no longer make sense), and give a direct proof that the two formulas agree. We actually prove a slightly more general identity that also implies the combinatorial identity underlying the discrete series character identities of Morel. We deduce this identity from a general abstract theorem giving a way to calculate the alternating sum of the values of a valuation on the chambers of a Coxeter arrangement. We also introduce a ring structure on the set of valuations on polyhedral cones in Euclidean space with values in a fixed ring. This gives a theoretical framework for the valuation appearing in Appendix A of the Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson paper. In Appendix B we extend the notion of $2$-structures (due to Herb) to pseudo-root systems.
Extended Nestohedra and their Face Numbers
Nestohedra are a family of convex polytopes that includes permutohedra, associahedra, and graph associahedra. In this paper, we study an extension of such polytopes, called extended nestohedra. We show that these objects are indeed the boundaries of simple polytopes, answering a question of Lam and Pylyavskyy. We also study the duals of (extended) nestohedra, giving a complete characterization of isomorphisms (as simplicial complexes) between the duals of extended nestohedra and a partial characterization of isomorphisms between the duals of nestohedra and extended nestohedra. In addition, we give formulas for their $f$-, $h$-, and $γ$-vectors. This includes showing that the $f$-vectors of the extended nestohedron corresponding to a forest $F$ and the nestohedron corresponding to the line graph of $F$ are the same, as well as showing that all flag extended nestohedra have nonnegative $γ$-vectors, thus proving Gal's conjecture for a large class of flag simple polytopes. We also relate the $f$- and $h$-vectors of the nestohedra and extended nestohedra, as well as give explicit formulas for the $h$- and $γ$-vectors in terms of descent statistics for a certain class of flag extended nestohedra. Finally, we define a partial ordering on partial permutations that is a join semilattice quotient of the weak Bruhar order on the symmetric group, and such that any linear extension of the partial order provides a shelling of the dual of the stellohedron.

Uniformly vertex-transitive graphs
We introduce uniformly vertex-transitive graphs as vertex-transitive graphs satisfying a stronger condition on their automorphism groups, motivated by a problem which arises from a Sinkhorn-type algorithm. We use the derangement graph $D(Γ)$ of a given graph $Γ$ to show that the uniform vertex-transitivity of $Γ$ is equivalent to the existence of cliques of sufficient size in $D(Γ)$. Using this method, we find examples of graphs that are vertex-transitive but not uniformly vertex-transitive, settling a previously open question. Furthermore, we develop sufficient criteria for uniform vertex-transitivity in the situation of a graph with an imprimitive automorphism group. We classify the non-Cayley uniformly vertex-transitive graphs on less than 30 vertices outside of two complementary pairs of graphs.
Factorization graphs of finite groups
We introduce the factorization graph of a finite group and study its connectedness and forbidden structures. We characterize all finite groups with connected factorization graphs and classify those with connected bipartite factorization graphs. Also, we obtain a classification of all groups with claw-free, $K_{1,4}$-free, and square-free factorization graphs, excluding the non-solvable groups in the latter case.

Involution pipe dreams
Published in Canad. J. Math. 74 (2022), no. 5, 1310-1346 • View PublicationBIB
Involution Schubert polynomials represent cohomology classes of $K$-orbit closures in the complete flag variety, where $K$ is the orthogonal or symplectic group. We show they also represent $T$-equivariant cohomology classes of subvarieties defined by upper-left rank conditions in the spaces of symmetric or skew-symmetric matrices. This geometry implies that these polynomials are positive combinations of monomials in the variables $x_i + x_j$, and we give explicit formulas of this kind as sums over new objects called involution pipe dreams. Our formulas are analogues of the Billey-Jockusch-Stanley formula for Schubert polynomials. In Knutson and Miller's approach to matrix Schubert varieties, pipe dream formulas reflect Gröbner degenerations of the ideals of those varieties, and we conjecturally identify analogous degenerations in our setting.
